The development of green primary explosives has become a “holy grail” of energetic materials research. Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate is considered one of the most promising candidates due to its excellent blasting power and environmentally benign nature. However, synthesizing Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate controllably and securely remains highly challenging. Herein, room-temperature anodization of metallic Cu and a Cu(I)–imidazole nanowire array on copper substrates in a sodium 5-nitrotetrazolate electrolyte leads to in situ electrosynthesis of Cu(I) 5-nitrotetrazolate (DBX-1, CuNT) and its analogue, Cu(II) 5-nitrotetrazolate [Cu(NT)2], respectively. Both obtained CuNT and Cu(NT)2 films demonstrate remarkable energy output and good laser-induced ignition performance. The thermal stability (Tp = 291 °C) and electrostatic safety (E50 = 2.54 mJ) of CuNT proved to be superior to those of Cu(NT)2 (Tp = 257 °C, and E50 = 0.57 mJ). Remarkably, this study provides an exciting new method for the rational design and development of Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate as a primary explosive for advanced initiating applications.

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is considered as an effective method for hydrogen storage and generating high-quality hydrogen for fuel cells. In this work, mesoporous Cu/TiO 2 –CeO 2 catalysts are proposed to achieve efficient MSR based on synergetic effects of thermal and photon energies . Optimal Ti/Ce molar ratio is found to be 2:1, for which excellent methanol conversion of 100% and extremely low CO selectivity of 2.2% are achieved for thermal catalysis. Further applying UV light (280–400 nm) irradiation while keeping the same temperature, the hydrogen production rate is enhanced to be 78.8 mmol/h/g from 58.6 mmol/h/g. The underlying mechanism is attributed to photogenerated electron hole pairs promoting the REDOX reaction of intermediate product methyl formate based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). This work provides a new method to enhance methanol steam reforming performance via thermo-photo synergic effects, and paves a way for the development of direct solar driven MSR techniques.

In this paper, it was found that boric acid (BA) could improve the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) by Cu(II)-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). At pH 8.5, the addition of BA could stabilize pH and generate the highly active complexes with Cu(II), which could accelerate the reduction of Cu(II) by PMS. The formed Cu(I) could activate PMS to form sulfate radical (SO 4 – ) and/or be oxidized to Cu(III). According to the results on radical scavenging experiments, SO 4 – and Cu(III) both participated in the degradation of RhB in BA/Cu(II)/PMS system. Because the binding ability of BA with Cu(II) is pH-dependent, the promotion effect of BA in Cu(II)/PMS process occurred only under weakly alkaline conditions. The presence of HCO 3 – and natural organic matter (NOM) both had an inhibition effect on RhB degradation in BA/Cu(II)/PMS system, while Cl – could promote the removal of RhB. This study provides a new idea to enhance PMS activation by Cu(II).

Mycophenolic acid (MPA), which is a potent immunosuppressant, has been widely used to prevent organ rejection after organ transplantation. In clinical practice, it is essential to monitor the free MPA concentration. Herein, convenient and fast electrochemical microsensing technology is developed for directly detecting the MPA concentration. To implement this method, ultrathin copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu–MOF) nanosheets with a thickness of about 6.6 nm are used to detect MPA. An analysis of electrochemical behavior reveals the direct electrochemical catalytic oxidation mechanism of MPA molecules on a Cu(II) tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Cu–TCPP)-modified electrode. Furthermore, electrochemical testing results show that the ultrathin Cu–TCPP nanosheet-based microsensor exhibits high sensitivity and specificity for MPA in the nano- to micromolar range, with a detection limit of 10 nM. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterization reveals that the unsaturated metal ions in ultrathin nanosheets are the active sites responsible for boosting the catalytic oxidation of MPA molecules. High-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry further shows the catalytic oxidation product of MPA and that the phenolic hydroxyl group in the MPA molecule is the active site where the catalytic reaction occurs. The considerable sensing performance of the Cu–TCPP nanosheet-based microsensor proves that it is possible to develop a fast and convenient method for the direct high-frequency monitoring of immunosuppressive drugs.

Among the Cu(II) removal methods, adsorption is a favorable technique and has attracted large attention because of its effectiveness and low cost. In quest of seeking for a favorable adsorbent with a high Cu(II) adsorption capacity and excellent reusability, researchers have paid much attention to hydrogels with three-dimensional networks. In this study, a novel hydrogel (P(AMPS-co-VDT) hydrogel) based on free-radical polymerization was synthesized with ionic monomer sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfate (AMPS-Na + ) and 2-vinyl-4, 6-diamino-1, 3, 5-triazine (VDT) and applied for Cu(II) adsorption in aqueous solutions. The hydrogel was characterized for swelling performance, surface morphology, functional groups, thermal gravimetric behavior, and elements. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity (175.75 mg/g) was relatively high compared with other hydrogels. The P(AMPS-co-VDT) hydrogel also was found to have a relatively good Cu(II) desorption and reuse behavior. The adsorption mechanism could be chelation and ion exchange. This work provides a new hydrogel for effective Cu(II) removal in the future.

Cu–Zn–Al catalyst was prepared by the co-precipitation method, and the catalytic performance for transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone (AP) to 1-phenylethanol (1-PhE) was evaluated using isopropanol (IPA) as a hydrogen source. The addition of Zn changed the morphology of the catalyst and reduced aggregation of catalyst particles, resulting in highly dispersed Cu active sites. As the Zn content increased, the valence state of Cu species changed. When the Cu/Zn molar ratio was 2/3, the Cu+/Cu0 ratio in the catalyst was 0.81, resulting in good selectivity for 1-PhE. The reaction conditions were optimized over the Cu–Zn–Al catalyst with a Cu/Zn molar ratio of 2/3. When the reaction was performed at 180 °C for 2 h with an IPA/AP molar ratio of 15, the AP conversion was 89.4% and the 1-PhE selectivity was 93.2%. The Cu–Zn–Al catalyst showed good stability, and AP conversion and the 1-PhE selectivity were essentially unchanged after five cycles.

An electrochemical method was developed for the formation of Al-Cu alloys. The electrodeposition of aluminum on Mo and Cu substrates was studied using cyclic voltammetry in molten LiCl-KCl-AlCl 3 (2 wt.%). During the cathodic scan of the cyclic voltammograms, three different Al-Cu alloys were observed before pure Al formed on the Cu substrate. The electrochemical formation processes were studied using square wave voltammetry and open circuit chronopotentiometry. The products of the different reduction processes were identified using XRD. The XRD results indicated that three different Al-Cu intermetallic compounds, Al 4 Cu 9 , AlCu, and Al 2 Cu, were obtained using electrochemical deposition in the molten salt system.

A new modified silica gel with alizarin complexone has been prepared and proven to act as a promising adsorbent. Ultra trace Cu(II) and Cd(II) can be selectively enriched and separated from rice and water samples by solid phase extraction and detected by FAAS. What is more, 0.003 mol L−1 and 0.25 mol L−1 of HNO3 can be used as eluent for the gradient elution of Cd(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Cu(II) could be completely separated from Cd(II) and monitored with the naked eye using color agent 5-Br-PADAP. The selectivity of the adsorbent and the effects of solution pH, type and concentration of the eluent, and foreign ions have been investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Cd(II) was 0.511 and 0.157 mmol g−1, respectively. Determination of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by FAAS was linear in the range of 1.0–200 µg L−1 and 2.5–100 µg L−1 with a detection limit of 0.21 µg L−1 and 0.46 µg L−1, respectively. Comparing the determination results for Cu(II) and Cd(II) in water and rice using the new method with those detected by ICP-MS, a considerable difference was not observed between the two methods. The method was validated with the certified reference material GBW08511 rice. Moreover, the determination of Cu(II) in the range of 20–120 µg L−1 is sensitive to the naked eye and the determination results are good in agreement with those detected by UV-Visible spectrometry. The proposed method was simple and capable of determining Cu(II) and Cd(II) in real samples accurately.

Synthesis of 2D MOFs is often sensitive to the reaction conditions like temperature and solvent etc. Cu(II)-5-azidoisophthalate MOF (Cu(II)–5N3IP) has been synthesized at room temperature as well as under solvothermal conditions. The azide functional group remained stable during solvothermal synthesis at 85 °C. Cu(II)–5N3IP crystallized in a Kagomé-type structure. Typical Cu2 paddle-wheels are connected to each other by 5N3IP ligands in infinite 2D sheets in the (001) plane, featuring 1D infinite channels within each layer. This MOF is used for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), and Congo red (CR). The adsorption is selective to the dimensions, shapes and ionic strengths of the dyes. Cu(II)–5N3IP exhibited adsorption rates in the order MB > CR > RhB > MO. Cu(II)–5N3IP is used as a catalyst for aerobic oxidation and Knoevenagel condensation. 3–10 mol% of Cu–5N3IP selectively catalyzes the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in 9–20 h at 60 °C. In Knoevenagel condensation, the reaction of both unsubstituted and substituted benzaldehydes at room temperature was observed at a very low catalyst loading of 3 mol% of MOF within a short time of 3–60 min. This 2D MOF has proved to be more efficient for dye adsorption and the catalytic applications under investigation (such as alcohol oxidation and Knoevenagel condensation) than its analogous 3D or 0D materials.

Limited by the notorious Li dendrites growth and serious polysulfide shuttle effect, the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is stagnant. Herein, a multifunctional separator composed of Cu-based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) and Li-Nafion was proposed to address the above intractable issues. The Cu-MOF with homogeneous porous structure and abundant Lewis acidic sites not only promotes uniform Li + flux, but also exhibits a strong chemical interaction with polysulfides to inhibit the shuttle effect. Moreover, the narrow pore size distribution in the Cu-MOF and negatively charged gap endowed by the -SO 3 − groups both act as ion sieve to facilitate the passage of Li + and restrict the migration of polysulfide anions, synergistically mitigating the dendritic Li growth and polysulfides shuttling. As a result, the symmetric cell with MOF/Nafion separator achieves ultralong cycling stability (1000 h) and ultralow overpotential of 20 mV at a current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 . Importantly, in the assembled Li-S full battery, the modified PP separator presents the superior cycle stability with capacity retention of 90% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. Current outcomes open up a new route to design functional separators with ion permselective for realizing the dendrite-free and high-performance Li-S battery.

Indole is commonly reported as a N-containing heterocyclic compounds in biomass supercritical water gasification (SCWG), and is difficult to be degraded to small molecule substances. In this work, Ni/AC, Ni–Cu/AC, Ni–Co/AC, Ni–Ce/AC were prepared and tested for catalytic SCWG of indole. The results showed that Ni–Cu/AC had the highest activity for converting indole and producing gases, leading to the highest hydrogen gasification efficiency (135.1%) and carbon gasification efficiency (33.1%). During the catalytic SCWG of indole, the addition of auxiliary metal Cu in multi-component catalyst showed synergistic effects by changing reaction pathways and reaction rates. It significantly promoted water-gas shift and steam reforming reactions, so forming the highest H 2 yield of 2.62 mol mol −1 . Furthermore, large specific surface, Ni reduction and high catalyst stability point to potential advantages of the Ni–Cu/AC catalyst for catalytic SCWG of recalcitrant N-containing compounds.

Iron-based organic frame material MIL-53 (Fe) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method with Cu2+ incorporated to obtain bimetallic composite MIL-53 (Fe, Cu). The structure and morphology of the material were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, XPS, and zeta potential. The adsorption performance of MIL-53 (Fe, Cu) on methyl orange was tested under a variety of conditions, including the effects of pH and material dosage, by the static adsorption test. The results show that under the condition of pH = 7, a temperature of 30°C, and an adsorbent dosage of 20 mg, the removal rate of MIL-53 (Fe, Cu) for methyl orange can reach more than 96% within 4 h, and the maximum adsorption capacity after fitting by the thermodynamic model can reach 294.43 mg/g, showing the excellent adsorption performance of MIL-53 (Fe, Cu) on methyl orange. In addition, by exploring the adsorption mechanism of MIL-53 (Fe, Cu) on methyl orange, it is found that the adsorption of MIL-53 (Fe, Cu) on methyl orange depends on chemical adsorption, as evidenced by combining Fe3+ and Cu2+ in the material with methyl orange molecules to form complexes to achieve adsorption. While the specific surface area of the material had no obvious effect on adsorption, the effects of pH, temperature, and concentration were explored. At a pH of 6.5, greater adsorption occurred at higher temperatures, as determined by thermodynamic model fitting, as well as with higher initial methyl orange molecule concentration.
