Coating a few layers of MoS2 nanosheets on a substrate is an effective approach to enhance catalytic activity for photocatalytic degradation. Herein, we fabricated heterostructured TiO2/MoS2 (H-TiO2/MoS2) with high structural stability via a simple two-step solvothermal approach. H-TiO2/MoS2 was composed of TiO2 as a hard core and MoS2 nanosheets as a shell, which could increase the electron transfer rate between TiO2 and MoS2 and enable active edge sites of MoS2 to be maximally exposed. Besides, H-TiO2/MoS2 indicated enhanced light absorption in the UV to Vis range when compared to TiO2 nanoparticles, and slightly lower than that of MoS2. This is beneficial for the enhancement of the photocatalytic degradation performance. Therefore, H-TiO2/MoS2 displayed a strong adsorption ability toward organic dyes and showed excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B with the concentration decreased by 99.4% due to the synergistically stimulative effect. The work will enlighten the development of highly efficient molybdenum sulfide-based heterostructured photocatalysts.

We studied a method to prepare a novel titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) composite photocatalyst, starting from improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. Regular TiO 2 microspheres were prepared by sol-gel method and loaded onto Ti 3 C 2 T x (Mxene). The high electrical conductivity of Mxene was utilized to transfer photogenerated electrons quickly and effectively prevent their recombination. By adjusting the addition amount of Mxene, the hydrogen production efficiency of the sample was greatly improved, and the maximum efficiency reached 135.2 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was twice that of pure TiO 2 . The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, PL, TEM and SEM analysis and electrochemical methods, and the test proved that the improvement of hydrogen production efficiency was caused by the improvement of the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. This work demonstrates the application of Mxene as a catalyst to improve efficiency and broadens the application prospects of Mxene.

Ultra-small Pt nanoparticles loaded on TiO 2 through in-situ photo-deposition for H 2 production via photo reforming of wastepaper was prepared in this study. The effect of noble metal cocatalyst, Pt loading, content of paper (e.g., napkin), and concentration of NaOH was investigated. Consequently, a highest H 2 production rate of 614.7 µmol/g/h was achieved in the optimum condition. It was found that both the solid paper and the dissolved part in the NaOH solution could scavenge the photo-generated holes and contribute to H 2 production. Our research provides a potential route for the reuse of wastepaper to produce clean fuel.

5-Methylfurfural (MF) is a critical commodity chemical used as food additive and synthetic intermediate. Opening a sustainable route towards highly selective synthesis of MF from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great significance, but has demonstrated extremely challenging. Herein, we report an efficient process for the selective production of MF from HMF over an anatase-supported gold catalyst (Au/a-TiO 2 ). During the hydrogenolysis of HMF, the desired C O bond is maintained and MF can be obtained in a high yield of 83.1 %, exhibiting excellent stability both in batch and flow operation. A combination of experimental and theoretical analyses attribute the superior performance of Au/a-TiO 2 to the synergistic effect of limited H access, low adsorption of reactants, and avoiding condensation, driven by the high concentration of oxygen vacancies in the support. This study highlights a novel approach of tailoring the coverage of active species for the selective transformation of renewable compounds into high-value-added chemicals.

Photocatalytic valorization is a sustainable approach for converting glycerol to value-added chemicals under ambient conditions, which remains challenging. Herein, using Au/TiO 2 as photocatalyst, we report glycerol oxidation reaction in non-pressurized reactor with borate additives. The activity and selectivity of photocatalytic glycerol oxidation depends on Au loading, borate concentration and solution pH. Both superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are generated due to oxygen reduction and water oxidation by photoexcited charge carriers. Apart from coordinating and protecting the oxidized intermediates from further oxidation, borate additives are discovered to up-regulate the superoxide radical generation, beneficial for C3 products formation. In pH 12 solution, C3 products selectivity of 58% and 37% on liquid-phase and carbon basis respectively, was realized at 94% glycerol conversion under AM 1.5 G irradiation for 4 h. Our finding may help guiding future catalyst design for photocatalytic biomass valorizations, where a balanced oxidative power is needed to steer the reaction pathway.

Considering the phosphorus pollution in the water and the shortage of phosphate rock resources, the TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 composite is prepared by sol–gel method to adsorb and recover phosphate from wastewater. The physio-chemical properties combined with adsorption experiment results show that the phosphate adsorption of TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 is mono-layer chemical adsorption with electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. The adsorption capacity reaches 64.6 mg/g at 25 °C in pH 6 and the phosphate recovery rate is over 85% after 5 recycling times. The TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 , which is easily separated magnetically from water with excellent phosphate removal performance of municipal sewage, is a promising specific phosphate adsorbent.

Low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient catalysts are urgently needed for the direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene. Studies have shown that defective TiO2 obtained by in situ reduction shows excellent catalytic PDH performance. Doping metals in the lattice of TiO2 is a plausible method for tuning the vacancy content and electronic property. In this paper, doping with fifth period transition metals was screened using a computational method, followed by experimental synthesis to further improve the PDH activity of TiO2-based catalysts. The TiO2 (101) surface with doping metals was first studied to determine the positive effect on the vacancy formation. Then, the two disputed reaction paths, that is, the concerted and stepwise path, were compared extensively on all of the doping models. Step one is found to be more preferable for all. The microkinetic modeling was employed to obtain the turnover frequency (TOF), based on which the linear relationship is found for TOF and binding energy of dissociated H2 or co-adsorption energy of 2-propyl&H. The abovementioned screening process shows Ru-doped TiO2, which shows the highest PDH activity and is justified by experimental results.

This paper proposes the preparation of a S-Se-Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 cathode by etching Ti 3 AlC 2 with hydrofluoric acid and doping with selenium (Se). Through an electrochemical performance test, selenium is doped into the active material sulfur and forms a sulfur-selenium compound to compensate for the ‘chemical inertness’ of the elemental sulfur, thereby increasing the utilization rate of the active material. Taking advantage of the ability of TiO 2 to absorb polysulfide compounds and the high conductivity of carbides, the Ti 3 C 2 T x composite material, modified with TiO 2 nanodots, is constructed in situ as a sulfur-selenium composite material carrier, achieving a high sulfur content of 80%. S-Se-Ti 3 C 2 Tx/TiO 2 is used as the cathode, and the initial discharge specific capacity is as high as 1073 mAh g −1 , which improves the utilization of active materials and effectively inhibits the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide intermediates.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), as a representative of metallic oxides, is widely used as food additive to serve as coloring or antibacterial packaging fortifier. However, in recent years, the potential hazards of nano-sized TiO 2 food additives to human beings is still in doubt. In this work, we systematically studied the interactions between three sizes of TiO 2 particles and the cell membrane systems with confocal laser scanning microscopy. We used both giant unilamellar vesicles and human colon cancer cells to mimic actual cell membrane systems. The results demonstrate the strong effect of particle size on membrane disruption and leakage behaviors. Among the three sizes of TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) used in this work, the TiO 2 NPs with the size of 110-300 nm are safe. In contrast, NPs with the size of 10-30 nm and 50-100 nm will cause the rupture and leakage of cell membranes. These indicates that the cytotoxicity of nano-sized TiO 2 particles increases with the decrease of particle sizes. In addition, it is found that the size effect of TiO 2 particles further depends on the membrane charge state. Simulations were also introduced to understand the results. This study would provide a theoretical basis for the production designing and safety standard of metallic oxide food additives.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) particles are widely employed in foods and supplements as lightening agents. A substantial fraction of the particles in commercial TiO 2 ingredients fall within the nanoscale, i.e., they have diameters below 100 nm. A biocorona can form around TiO 2 particles when they are incorporated into food matrices containing plant proteins . In this study, we investigated the molecular interactions between two hydrophobic plant proteins (gliadin and zein) and four types of surface-modified TiO 2 nanoparticles (TCN, TCN-1, TCN-2 and TCN-3). Ultraviolet–visible absorption, fluorescence quenching, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the plant proteins interacted with the surfaces of the TiO 2 nanoparticles, resulting in changes in their molecular conformations . Quartz crystal microbalance analysis indicated that the mass of the hard corona increased as the number of hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of the TiO 2 nanoparticles increased, which implied that hydrogen bonding played an important role in the formation of the biocorona. These results provide a better understanding of the interactions that may occur in food matrices containing both plant proteins and TiO 2 nanoparticles.

Regardless of how good pre-dispersion of nano-TiO 2 in aqueous solutions, re-aggregation rapidly occurs once it is mixed into fresh cement mixtures, limiting the nano-reinforcing efficiency for cement-based materials. In this study, an in-situ release strategy by pre-encapsulating nano-TiO 2 in microscaled ice and post-dispersing into fresh cement matrix during ice-melting process was developed to highly reinforce the microstructure and properties of cement paste. Compared with the conventional dispersion strategy, a much better dispersion of nano-TiO 2 (0.6 wt% by cement) was achieved using the in-situ release strategy, which not only improved the 7- and 28-day compressive strength of cement paste by 9.2% and 10.1%, respectively, but also reduced the cement hydration heat and water adsorption by 36.1% and 4.6%, respectively. In addition to this, the NO degradation efficiency of cement paste was also improved by 20% due to the larger exposed surface area of nano-TiO 2 with better dispersion. These research outcomes demonstrate that the in-situ release strategy facilitates the dispersion of nano-TiO 2 in cement matrix and contributes to highly reinforcing cement paste with lower hydration heat and water adsorption, strong mechanical strength and higher photocatalytic properties.

Optimizing and enhancing the performance of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials relies on the modification of their composition and structure through heterogeneous interface engineering. Ti 3 C 2 T x ’s high conductivity results in an impedance mismatch, which hinders efficient EMW absorption. Herein, a one–step catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method is used to construct the Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 @C heterogeneous structure. Upon annealing at 500 °C, amorphous carbon is uniformly deposited on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface, thereby incorporating the scale–like TiO 2 generated during the process. The inclusion of the amorphous carbon layer and TiO 2 reduces the substrate’s conductivity, achieving optimized impedance matching. Additionally, building heterogeneous interfaces between Ti 3 C 2 T x , TiO 2 , and C enriches multiple loss mechanisms involving dipole and interfacial polarization, ultimately enabling optimal EMW absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 @C–500 is –53.12 dB when its thickness and frequency are 1.15 mm and 13.80 GHz, respectively. Moreover, thermal infrared imaging confirms that coatings fabricated using Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 @C–500 demonstrate a favorable heat dissipation rate, validating its effectiveness in addressing the challenge of efficient heat dissipation in electronic devices. This study significantly contributes to the progress of two–dimensional (2D) materials, enabling high–performance EMW absorption and expanding their applications in complex scenarios.
