Graphene nanosheets-supported Ag nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection of TNT by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Minmin Liu,Wei Chen

Sensitive and selective detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) has attracted considerable attention due to the wide applications of TNT as explosive material . Many efforts have been made to develop various sensors for detecting TNT in recent years. We herein report a novel sensor based on p-aminothiophenol (PATP) functionalized silver nanoparticles supported on graphene nanosheets (Ag/GNs), which was found to be a kind of effective chemosensor for the ultratrace detection of TNT by using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In the present hybrid material, PATP is paired together to form a corresponding azo compound p, p′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) and thus can be used as a model Raman probe. The π-donor–acceptor interaction between π-acceptor TNT and π-donor DMAB-Ag/GNs complex can effectively induce the “hot spots” for SERS. The intense spectral resonance from the DMAB–TNT–DMAB bridges formed between the Ag/GNs nanosheets could result in enhanced Raman signals of DMAB molecules with the presence of ultratrace TNT. SERS measurements demonstrated that TNT with concentration as low as 10 −11   M can be detected by using the present SERS platform. The present study not only provides a facile method for ultrasensitive and selective detection of TNT but also could develop a graphene-based SERS platform.

“Green” synthesis of magnetic core–shell Fe3O4@SN–Ag towards efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Wang Zhen-Zhen,Zhai Shang-Ru,Zhang Feng,Xiao Zuo-Yi,Zhai Bin,An Qing-Da

This work presented a novel, facile, cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for the preparation of magnetic core–shell structured catalyst i.e. Fe 3 O 4 @SN–Ag (abbreviation of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 –Ag). During the process of preparation, Ag nanoparticles were in situ generated with amino groups in the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @SN serving as green reductant and stabilizer in the absence of any additional toxic reductant or organic reagent. Magnetic core, Fe 3 O 4 , was easily prepared through solvothermal method. The subsequent coating and surface amino functionalization of SiO 2 was accomplished via one-pot sol–gel method, which was green and time-saving. What’s more, the resulting catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic property (the reaction was finished within 2 min) and reusability (reused at least seven times) in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

FITC functionalized magnetic core–shell Fe3O4/Ag hybrid nanoparticle for selective determination of molecular biothiols

Ling Chen,Jinhua Li,Shasha Wang,Wenhui Lu,Aiguo Wu,Jaebum Choo,Lingxin Chen

A sensing strategy for chromogenic detection of molecular biothiols has been proposed based on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) functionalized magnetic core–shell Fe 3 O 4 /Ag hybrid nanoparticles. Ag coated magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were initially synthetized. FITC was subsequently conjugated on the surface of core–shell nanoparticles by Ag–SCN linkage and then the fluorescence of FITC was quenched. Upon addition of molecular biothiols, since the Ag S bond is stronger than Ag–SCN, a place-displacement between thiols and FITC would occur and thereby the fluorescence of FITC would recover. Thus, a fluorescence “off-on” probe was attained by virtue of biothiols, so after magnetic separation, the fluorescence signal change of FITC in clear solution could be employed for quantitative determination of typical molecular biothiols such as glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cys). High sensitivity was obtained with the detection limits of 10   nM and 20   nM for GSH and Cys, respectively. As well as, the assay strategy presented excellent selectivity toward molecular biothiols against other amino acids. Furthermore, confocal imaging was achieved in living cells, indicating that this fluorescent probe is potentially applicable for imaging molecular thiols in biological systems.

Controllable synthesis of Ag@TiO2 heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activities under UV and visible excitation

Fanli Zhang,Zhiqiang Cheng,Liying Cui,Tingting Duan,Ahmed Anan,Chunfeng Zhang,Lijuan Kang

The heterostructure of Ag doped-TiO2 has been fabricated through the facile synthesis of electrospinning technique and hydrothermal reaction. During the hydrothermal process, the concentrations of reactants play a significant role in controlling the size and load of Ag NPs on the surface of the TiO2 fibers. After that, the nanoheterostructures of Ag@TiO2 were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Simultaneously, diffuse reflectance was used to investigate the visible light adsorption ability. Surface modification by Ag rendered visible light-induced photocatalytic activity to the TiO2 fibers. Rhodamine B (RhB) was employed as a representative dye pollutant to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Ag/TiO2 samples. The results indicated that the heterojunction structure of Ag/TiO2 exhibited higher degradation efficiency than the pure TiO2 fibers. Furthermore, we also investigated the photocatalytic performance under visible-light, which exhibited a significant increase in degradation efficiency. Additionally, the proposed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2 fibers by deposited-Ag particles was proposed.

Ionic liquids–water interfacial preparation of triangular Ag nanoplates and their shape-dependent antibacterial activity

Weiwei Lu,Kaisheng Yao,Jianji Wang,Jiongliang Yuan

As a class of green and designable solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) have been used extensively in inorganic synthesis. In those schemes, ILs were usually used as reaction media to replace water and organic solvents, and/or used as stabilizer and capping agents to act like an amphiphilic molecule or polymer. However, the unique properties of ILs were not fully utilized in the area of material preparation. In this study, a new protocol of “ILs–water interfacial synthesis” was developed and used for the preparation of Ag nanomaterials. Taking the advantage of tunable property of ILs–water interface, Ag nanomaterials with different morphology such as triangular nanoplates, polygonal nanoplates, and nanoparticles could be facilely obtained. Growth mechanism of the triangular Ag nanoplates has been investigated from structural characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It was shown that growth of the nanoplates was under kinetic control mainly due to high viscosity and ionicity of the ILs. Furthermore, the antimicrobial performance of these Ag samples was tested to study the influence of shape of the Ag nanomaterials on the antimicrobial activity and the related antimicrobial mechanism. The results suggested that the efficient antimicrobial activity of the triangular Ag nanoplates was ascribed to their sharp corners and edges and large areas of active (1   1   1) crystal plane, which leads to the higher amount of leaching Ag + ion.

Facile synthesis of Ag@CeO2 core–shell plasmonic photocatalysts with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance

Linen Wu,Siman Fang,Lei Ge,Changcun Han,Ping Qiu,Yongji Xin

Novel Ag@CeO 2 core–shell nanostructures with well-controlled shape and shell thickness were successfully synthesized via a green and facile template-free approach in aqueous solution. As-prepared samples were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), electron spin resonance (ESR) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The structures with different core shapes and controllable shell thickness exhibited unique optical properties. It is found that the nanoscale Ag@CeO 2 core–shell photocatalysts exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities in the O 2 evolution and MB dye degradation compared to pure CeO 2 nanoparticals. The enhancement in photocatalytic activities can be ascribed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag cores. Moreover, larger active interfacial areas and contact between metal/semiconductor in the core–shell structure facilitate transfer of charge carriers and prolong lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. It is expected that the Ag@CeO 2 core–shell structure may have great potential in a wider range of light-harvesting applications.

Synthesis of Ag/TiO2 Nanotube Heterojunction with Improved Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance Inspired by Bioadhesion

Dong Yang,Yuanyuan Sun,Zhenwei Tong,Yao Tian,Yuanbing Li,Zhongyi Jiang

Inspired by the bioadhesion mechanism found in mussel, a catechol derivative, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (diHPP), is employed as both linker and reducer of Ag+ to synthesize the Ag/TiO2 nanotube (Ag/TNT) heterojunction under ambient conditions in this study. In the prepared Ag/TNT composite, Ag nanocrystals about 3.8 nm in diameter distribute over the TNT surface uniformly and form the heterojunction structure with TNT. The diHPP first links to the TNT surface through the bidentate chelation of catechol group with Ti4+ and then acts as both an anchor and a reducer to in situ nucleate and grow Ag nanocrystals on the TNT surface. By adjusting the AgNO3 concentration, the loading amount of Ag nanocrystals on the TNT surface can be controlled easily, and the visible-light absorption ability of Ag/TNT heterojunctions enhances with increasing the Ag loading amount. Moreover, their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation capability of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The Ag/TNT heterojunctions exhibit the high visible-light photocatalytic activity, which can almost degrade 100% RhB within 2 h. This excellent performance can be attributed to the local electric field caused by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag nanocrystals and the high adsorption capability of TNTs with large specific surface area.

Solvent-controlled 3D lanthanide–polyoxometalate frameworks: reduction and stabilization of Ag nanocomposites and catalytic properties

Guang-Gang Gao,Chao-Yu Song,Xi-Ming Zong,Dong-Feng Chai,Hong Liu,Yu-Long Zou,Jian-Xun Liu,Yun-Feng Qiu

Four three-dimensional lanthanide–polyoxometalate complexes, [K4Ln3(H2IDC)3(HIDC)3(H2O)3(SiW12O40)]·nH2O (Ln = La (1), n = 7 and Ce (2), n = 6; H3IDC = 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid) and [Ln4(HIDC)4(H2O)8(SiW12O40)]·11H2O (Ln = La (3) and Ce (4)), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Compounds 1 and 2 are 3D architectures that include 2D layered structures connected by K+ cations, which were realized by tuning the reaction media with different ratios of water and ethanol. By comparison, in the cases of 3 and 4, lanthanide ions coordinate to tridentate HIDC ligands forming 2D Ln–organic networks, which are further pillared by α-Keggin type [SiW12O40]4− polyoxoanions and thus constructing new 3D frameworks featuring 1D channels along the a and b axes. All of these complexes could induce the formation of Ag nanocomposites possessing high catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH4.

Fabrication of a Ag/Bi3TaO7 Plasmonic Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Degradation of Tetracycline

Bifu Luo,Dongbo Xu,Di Li,Guoling Wu,Miaomiao Wu,Weidong Shi,Min Chen

A novel Ag/Bi3TaO7 plasmonic photocatalyst has been prepared by a simple photoreduction process. The as-prepared Ag/Bi3TaO7 photocatalyst exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) compared to that of a bare Bi3TaO7 catalyst. The 1 wt % Ag-loaded Bi3TaO7 sample showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for TC degradation (85.42%) compared with those of the other samples. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the surface plasmon resonance caused by Ag nanoparticles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles onto the Bi3TaO7 surface promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers. In addition, an electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiment revealed that the photoinduced active species hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical were the main active species in the photocatalytic process of TC degradation. The photocatalytic reaction mechanism was discussed by active species trapping and ESR analysis.

Supramolecular gel based on the cyclodextrin inclusion assembly of Ag-Fe3O4 nanodimers and Pluronic F127

Yi Yang,Xiao Chen,Dandan Huang,Wei Ye

Being considered as building blocks, the inorganic nanodimer particles such as Ag-Fe 3 O 4 , Cd-Se and Pt-Fe 3 O 4 , have attracted much attention because of their capability of dual surface functionalization and potential applications in field-emission, data storage and photovoltaic devices. For these motivations and as a continuation of our previous study, a gel with flower-like morphology based on Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimers has been constructed with the carboxylated cyclodextrin (MAH-CD) and Pluronic F127 molecules in mixed solvent of cyclohexane and water. The morphology of Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimers and structure of MAH-CD were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) respectively. The mechanism of gel formation is discussed along with the data obtained from rheological measurement, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Each Ag-Fe 3 O 4 particle was coated by lots of MAH-CD molecules, which were threaded by F127 chains. The gel fabrication is controlled by the inclusion of MAH-CD with F127, the interaction between the carboxyl group and the Fe 3 O 4 surface. The cyclohexane molecules in gel were trapped with F127 by cyclodextrin, which may be packed orderly through hydrogen bond. Meanwhile, the Fe 3 O 4 side of nanodimers provides the anchoring position for carboxyl group to induce the formation of gel. Such an Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimer initiated gel can be used either based on Ag side for catalytic and sensing properties, or based on superparamagnetism from Fe 3 O 4 side.
