Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes are often corroded, leading to structural defects in the treatment of alkaline textile wastewater, greatly reducing separation efficiency. Herein, PVDF membranes were surface-modified through coating and self-assembly methods. Novel adhesives (ad-LNPs) were prepared by heat-releasing endo -crosslinked 2,2-Bis (4-glycidyloxyphenyl) propane (BADE) in lignin (LNP). ad-LNPs coatings provided stable adhesion properties to the PVDF membrane surface and exhibited pH-switchable surface charge with excellent alkali resistance. Subsequently, benzene amine monomers and water-soluble 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) are introduced to form a polymer network (AMPS-PANI) layer through self-assembly. The results showed that the membrane permeability and selectivity reached the optimal equilibrium point when the aniline monomers self-polymerization time was 40 min (temperature: 5–10 °C). High dye retention (MB:99.8 %, RhB:99.5 %, CR:98 %, MO:96.2 %) at high purity water flux (172 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Meanwhile, clever utilization of AMPS swelling behavior imparts the modified membrane with physical self-healing properties, as evidenced by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showing the filling effect of the repaired membrane. Additionally, the construction of a hydrophilic interface increases the contamination resistance (FRR) of the modified membrane to 97 %. In conclusion, the prepared membrane (M4) not only effectively separates dyes/salts but also exhibits excellent alkali resistance and physical self-healing functionality, demonstrating significant potential for practical treatment of alkaline textile wastewater.

Thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) was used to fabricate polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films under different quenching conditions. Temperature gradient fields were in-situ formed inside the films through varying the TIPS quenching temperature, and an enthalpy transformation method (ETM) was adopted to simulate the temperature gradient fields during the TIPS process. Our findings showed that there existed liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) even at higher PVDF concentration (e.g., above the monotectic point). The coexistence and competition between liquid–liquid and solid–liquid phase separations were significantly determined by the cooling rate, which helped to explain the formation mechanisms of hierarchical morphologies observed in the final TIPS films. The present work will be of substantial importance to further studies on an industrial tuning of the microstructure and performance of TIPS films through the operational parameter control.

In order to obtain the tunable and charged surface of the membranes, polymerized ionic liquid(PIL) block copolymers poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-b-poly(1-[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-3-butylimidazoliumbromide) (PMEBIm-Br) with different poly(ionic liquid) brush lengths were synthesized by RAFT polymerization method and used in the fabrication of poly(vinylidene fluoride) blend membranes. Chemistry analysis confirmed the successful copolymerization of P(MMA-b-MEBIm-Br) with different chain lengths of PMEBIm-Br blocks, and the PIL groups was also detected on the surface of the blend membranes, which contributes to the hydrophilic and positively charged surface of the membrane. These properties were further enhanced by the chain length of PMEBIm-Br blocks in the copolymer. The surface wettability of the membranes can be regulated from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity by anion exchange, and the water flux changes also confirmed these phenomena. In addition, the effects of PMEBIm-Br blocks on the separation properties of the membranes were investigated using two dyes, namely, orange G and rhodamine 6G. Results indicated that the blend membranes with long length of PMEBIm-Br blocks had high rejection and good antifouling property to rhodamine 6G. Furthermore, the adsorption experiment of the blend membranes to the two dyes also indicated that blend membranes with long length of PMEBIm-Br blocks would have good dye adsorption-separation property.

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in hybrid hydrogels containing photocatalysts remains a challenge due to the rapid loss of water and poor light harvesting. To overcome this drawback, an electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibrous layer with an unconnected porous structure is coated on hybrid hydrogels to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hybrid hydrogels are prepared by the thermally initiated polymerization of the monomers poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGM300) and di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO2MA) with g-C3N4/Pt nanosheets. After that, an electrospun PVDF fibrous layer with a porous structure is constructed on the hydrogel surface by first electrospinning a solution containing PVDF and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and then removing PEO. To optimize photocatalytic performance, the weight fraction of PEO is increased from 0.2 to 0.5 and finally to 0.8. Simultaneously, the porous structure in the nanofibers switches from an unconnected to a fully connected state. Due to the existence of unconnected pores in the PVDF fibrous layer, the evaporated water molecules from hydrogels can be captured and returned to the liquid state. They act as tiny mirrors to reflect the light scattered from the hydrogel surface. Thus, light harvesting is enhanced. The hydrogen evolution rate prominently increases to 3491 μmol h–1 g–1, which is almost double that without a fibrous layer covering. In addition, evaporation also slows down due to cycles of evaporation and condensation of water molecules. The weight loss of hybrid hydrogels coated with an electrospun PVDF0.5 fibrous layer with an unconnected porous structure is only 43.5% to that without any PVDF fibrous layer. It significantly prolongs the lifetime. For this reason, the present hybrid hydrogel system is well suited for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in deserts and prairies, which are rich in solar energy but lack water.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is one of the most used membrane materials in the water industries, and the PVDF membrane can be fabricated majorly through non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The differences in membrane aging of NIPS-PVDF and TIPS-PVDF remain unclear. In this study, the agings of commercially available NIPS-PVDF and TIPS-PVDF membranes were investigated in the pilot-scale MBRs experiment as well as in the batch soaking tests. The raw PVDF powders in different crystalline polymorphs were also subjected to aging tests to examine the relation between PVDF polymorphous structure and aging. The results showed that the NIPS-PVDF membrane experienced more severe aging in the pilot-scale MBR experiment in comparison with the TIPS-PVDF membrane. Acid aging dislodged and eliminated the additives in the membrane, but did not attack the PVDF. NIPS-PVDF membrane was the dominant β PVDF phase, which was more susceptible to dehydrochlorination in alkaline oxide aging. The thin top layer in the asymmetric structure of the NIPS-PVDF membrane resulted in its vulnerability against alkaline oxide aging. The α PVDF phase and the symmetric structure of the TIPS-PVDF membrane contributed to its greater stability in alkaline oxide aging. Overall, the results can provide a basis for selecting a chemical cleaning strategy for PVDF membranes, and for improving the anti-aging characteristics of the PVDF in the membrane fabrication.

In order to improve the separation performance and anti-fouling property of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes, PVDF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were obtained by mixing PVDF with Ag@ZIF-8 using a simple one-pot microemulsion strategy. First, both Ag and ZIF-8 were generated in one micelle of the microemulsion during the formation of composites. After in-situ polymerization of microemulsion, the latex containing Ag@ZIF-8 was blended with PVDF by phase-inversion method to construct the MMMs. The small-sized Ag particles were closely distributed on the surface of ZIF-8 after the formation of ZIF-8 in micelles. The subtle interaction forces between the two facilitated the distribution of the composite in the PVDF matrix. In addition, the hydrophilic component in the latex improves the pore structure , the permeation and anti-fouling performance of the PVDF matrix compared to neat PVDF and the MMM with ZIF-8 added. Mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membranes with 0.3 wt% of microemulsion containing Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited good permeation ( J w = 222 L m −2 h −1 ) and flux recovery rate ( FRR = 82%). The well-distributed Ag@ZIF-8 in PVDF polymeric matrix strengthened the dye retention of MMMs from high-salinity wastewater, due to the interaction between Ag@ZIF-8 and dye molecules. This mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membrane also showed optimum dye rejection (97.3%) and low salt rejection (0.2%). The MMMs combined with Ag@ZIF-8 in this work are promising for the removal of dye contaminants for high-salinity wastewater, so as to achieve the goal of advanced treatment for high-salinity wastewater.

This study applied a novel strategy to modify an inert fluorine-containing surface by combining alkaline lignin (AL) and silk fibroin (SF), introducing many active sites. The intercalation sites of SF during the formation of the AL coating allow the shape of the Mortise-Tenon metal-organic framework (MOF). MOF-303 with a Mortise-Tenon structure was grown on the surface of the membrane. The PVDF@MOF-303 membrane possesses superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic properties. The modified membrane showed perfect resistance to oil adhesion. Stable oil-in-water emulsions and toxic heavy metal ions can be separated by the PVDF@MOF-303 membrane with a Mortise-Tenon structure. This membrane has achieved outstanding oil-in-water emulsion separation efficiency (over 99.2 %) and flux (over 4200.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). After ten repeated experiments, a separation efficiency of 93.0 % was obtained. This membrane was used for heavy metal adsorption with high capacity (over 3374.4 mg m −2 ) and efficiency (over 99.6 %). Even more importantly, harmful heavy metal ions soluble in water can be effectively removed during emulsion separation. It can modify other substrates due to the easy preparation method and efficient performance described in this report.

The urgent demand of efficient power sources for microelectronics has stimulated the exploration of light-weight electrostatic capacitors with high energy density . With the distinctive characteristics of high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based ferroelectric polymers have emerged as promising candidates for high-performance dielectric capacitors. However, the intrinsic high hysteresis loss of PVDF based polymers would largely weaken the discharge efficiency of capacitors, hindering their practical application. In this work, we demonstrate that through topological-structure design and proper doping composition modulation involving in MXene and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS), considerable enhanced discharge efficiency and discharge energy density can be simultaneously achieved. For example, a 7 layered composite comprised of alternative BNNS reinforced layers and MXene reinforced layer presents an ultra-high discharge density and charge-discharge efficiency of 34.6 J/cm 3 and 62 %, respectively. It is anticipated that this work will open a new design paradigm to direct PVDF based ferroelectric polymers towards viable high-performance capacitors.

Two kinds of 1D core–shell nanorods silver@polydopamine (Ag@PDA) and silver@zinc oxide (Ag@ZnO) were successfully synthesized and doped into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate composites. The different surface modification effects between the organic PDA shell and inorganic ZnO shell on structure and dielectric properties of PVDF composites were investigated. Results indicated that the ZnO shell showed a crystalline structure, while the PDA shell is amorphous. Due to the difference in crystal structure of the coating shell, the Ag@ZnO/PVDF composites showed a better dielectric performance than the Ag@PDA/PVDF composites, while the Ag@PDA/PVDF showed excellent mechanical properties. The crystallized structure of ZnO not only promoted the crystal conversion of PVDF molecules, but also effectively limited the movement of charge carriers in composites. In the case of 10wt% fillers' content and before breakdown strength, the energy storage densities of Ag@PDA/PVDF and Ag@ZnO/PVDF composites are 79.53% and 209.2% higher than that of pure PVDF films, respectively. Moreover, the charge/discharge efficiency of Ag@ZnO/PVDF composite is also higher than that of pure PVDF and Ag@PDA/PVDF composite. When testing at 1800 kV/cm electrical strength, the energy storage density of Ag@ZnO/PVDF composite increases to 4.02 J/cm 3 .

Nowadays, attractive progress has been made on flexible humidity sensors for multifunctional applications, yet most of them still suffer from intrinsic instability due to the device structure based on flexible substrates. Herein, high-performance flexible humidity sensors were constructed using alkali metal halide doped polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) freestanding films. These films are prepared via a versatile thermally induced phase separation procedure with a network-like porous structure. After doping with metal salts of MCl (M = Li, Na, K), the humidity sensing performance is highly improved, among which the LiCl@PVP/PVDF film is the optimized one. In the relative humidity range of 11–97% at room temperature, the LiCl@PVP/PVDF sensor exhibits high response (2.3 × 103), fast response (10 s), small hysteresis (0.41%), and excellent repeatability. Notably, the LiCl@PVP/PVDF film is featured as fully self-supporting without the assistance of any substrate, readily tailorable that can be cut into different shapes, as well as highly flexible that can be bent to certain angles, and meanwhile almost maintains its response without significant decrease. Furthermore, the excellent performance enables the LiCl@PVP/PVDF sensor to demonstrate great potential in real-time noncontact diaper and finger detection. This contribution provides a practical humidity sensing candidate for moisture monitoring and gives insights into the fields of humidity sensors and flexible electronics.

Laccase–Cu3BTC2 was synthesized from laccase and Cu3BTC2 metal–organic skeleton materials and doped with the highly hydrophilic amphiphilic polymer polyvinylidene fluoride-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PVDF-g-PEGMA) as a bimodifier in the casting solution using in situ synthesis to prepare high-flux poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes. Due to the high hydrophilicity of PVDF-g-PEGMA and laccase–Cu3BTC2, the PVDF-modified membranes were more hydrophilic; the water contact angle decreased from 93.45° to 79.46°. It exhibited optimal performance when its mass fraction relative to PVDF was 8.0%. Pure water flux and the sodium alginate retention rate reached 1975.61 L/(m2·h) and 87.79%, respectively, and the flux recovery and reversible and irreversible contamination ratio were 84.64%, 71.07%, and 15.36%, respectively, substantially enhancing the pollution resistance of the PVDF membrane.

To realize application in high-capacity capacitors and portable electric devices, large energy density is eagerly desired for polymer-based nanocomposite. The core–shell structured nanofillers with inorganic buffer layer are recently supposed to be promising in improving the dielectric property of polymer nanocomposite. In this work, core–shell structured TO@BT nanoparticles with crystalline TiO 2 buffer layer coated on BaTiO 3 nanoparticle were fabricated via solution method and heat treatment. The thickness of the TO buffer layer can be tailored by modulating the additive amount of the titanate coupling agent in preparation process, and the apparent dielectric properties of nanocomposite are much related to the thickness of the TO layer. The relatively thin TO layer prefer to generate high polarization to increase dielectric constant while the relatively thick TO layer would rather to homogenize field to maintain breakdown strength. Simulation of electric field distribution in the interfacial region reveals the improving effect of the TO buffer layer on the dielectric properties of nanocomposite which accords with the experimental results well. The optimized nanoparticle TO@BT-2 with a mean thickness of 3–5 nm buffer layer of TO is effective in increasing both the ε and E b in the PVDF composite film. The maximal discharged energy density of 8.78 J/cm 3 with high energy efficiency above 0.6 is obtained in TO@BT-2/PVDF nanocomposite with 2.5 vol% loading close to the breakdown strength of 380 kV/mm. The present study demonstrates the approach to optimize the structure of core–shell nanoparticles by modulating buffer layer and provides a new way to further enlarge energy density in polymer nanocomposite.
