Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) consisting of bentonites are used worldwide for the containment of hazardous landfill leachates . However, the swelling of bentonite in aggressive leachates is suppressed, which critically decreases GCLs' barrier performance. This study proposed a polymerization method to prepare calcium-bentonite (CaB)/polymer nanocomposites for high performance GCLs under aggressive conditions. The CaB was successfully intercalated and grafted by salt resistant poly (acrylic acid-2-acryl amido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid-N, N′-methylene bis(acrylamide)) (abbreviated as P(AA-AMPS-MBA)) networks, leading to layered structures in the resulting nanocomposites. The swell index of P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB in coal combustion product (CCP) leachate ( I = 178 mM) was increased by 2.1 times relative to that of pristine CaB. Consequently, the P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB exhibited excellent barrier property, with hydraulic conductivity to CCP leachate ( K CCP = 6✕10 −12 m/s) being four and one orders of magnitude lower than that of pristine CaB and the US standard for GCLs, respectively. In addition, polymer elution of P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB is only 0.15% that of the control sample prepared by traditional physical mixing method.

Extensive studies have been conducted on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of antibiotics in water environments. However, the separation and recovery of powdered catalysts from water at the end of the reaction remains a great challenge, which hinders the large-scale application of powder photocatalysts. Inspired by the high sustainability, energy efficiency, and cleanliness of photocatalytic technique in antibiotic degradation, we have developed a stable and efficient ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 /β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (CA-CNS/β-PVDF) membrane for antibiotics removal. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the tetracycline (TC) removal rate of the membrane reached 93.12 % within 2 h due to the synergistic effect of the embedded ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane still maintained excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles, showing good stability and reusability. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching analyses suggest that the TC degradation efficiency is enhanced by the synergistic effect of free radical-non-free radical mixed pathways (•O 2 , •OH, h + , 1 O 2 ) and 1 O 2 plays an important role in the degradation process. The excellent photocatalytic antibiotics degradation performances of CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane were still obtained in actual water samples under natural sunlight, suggesting its great application potentials. The photocatalytic mechanism, possible degradation intermediates, and degradation pathways are elucidated based on the theoretical calculations and experiments. The toxicity analysis by QSAR shows that the CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane successfully reduces the biological toxicity of three antibiotics (TC, OTC, CIP) during the photocatalysis. In all, our work provides a universal immobilization technique of powdered photocatalysts to improve their wastewater purification efficiencies.

Integrated CO 2 capture and utilization (ICCU) using “capture-conversion” dual functional materials (DFMs) paves a cost-effective path for restricting CO 2 emissions by eliminating the energy-intensive intermediate processes. The interactions between catalysts and absorbents are believed pivotal in ICCU; however, there is a lack of environment-friendly strategy to fabricate the interaction for industrial applications. Here, we propose a solvent-free mechanochemical approach to promote the interaction by improving the proximity between natural calcium and iron sources. The interaction was systemically investigated and confirmed using XRD, XPS, TEM, TPR, etc. As a result, the mechanochemical approach derived DFM achieved 5.5 mmol g −1 CO 2 capacity, 87 % CO 2 conversion, and 100 % CO selectivity at 650 °C, significantly outperforming the CaO-alone benchmark (CO 2 capacity < 4.5 mmol g −1 , CO 2 conversion < 73 %). Further incorporating MgO would alleviate the sintering and promote the CO 2 capture stability (< 15 % decrease after 20 cycles) by acting as a thermal-stable barrier. Based on in situ XRD, it is further confirmed that Fe-Ca interaction exhibits a dynamic looping mechanism in ICCU. The techno-economic analysis strongly supports the superiority of ICCU catalyzed by naturally sourced DFMs on eliminating the energy and H 2 consumption for CO 2 capture and upgradation. As a result, producing CO via ICCU using mechanochemical derived DFMs exhibits 20 % and 10 % cost decrease compared to the conventional CCU and ICCU using CaO alone scenarios, pointing out the potential of ICCU technology in industrial applications.

Ca-based thermochemical energy storage (TCES) systems are critical for large-scale green energy utilization, as they bridge the gap between intermittent solar supply and stable energy demand, and stand out for their high energy density and economic advantages. However, their practical application is limited by persistent challenges, including CaO sintering and weak solar absorption. In this study, Fe/Mn co-doped CaCO 3 microspheres were synthesized by co-precipitation method, followed by coating with SiO 2 or TiO 2 shells to construct two core@shell composites, namely CaCO 3 (Fe, Mn)@SiO 2 and CaCO 3 (Fe, Mn)@TiO 2 . The introduction of Fe/Mn doping markedly improved the solar absorption capacity of the CaCO 3 matrix. High temperature cyclic tests (800 °C, 100 calcination/carbonation cycles) further demonstrated that the core@shell structure significantly improved the cyclic stability. Notably, CaCO 3 (Fe, Mn)@TiO 2 maintained 96.2% of its initial energy storage density (1046.1 kJ kg −1 ) after 100 cycles, corresponding to a final density of approximately 1006.1 kJ kg −1 . In contrast, CaCO 3 (Fe, Mn)@SiO 2 retained 752.4 kJ kg −1 (from an initial 1178.7 kJ kg −1 ) after 100 cycles, while uncoated CaCO 3 (Fe, Mn) dropped to 481.1 kJ kg −1 (from an initial 1817.9 kJ kg −1 ). This superiority is attributed to the higher Tammann temperature and stronger Ti O bond dissociation energy of TiO 2 , which endow the TiO 2 shell with robust thermal stability and structural integrity, effectively suppressing particle sintering and pore collapse. The results validate that the core@shell protection strategy provides a viable design paradigm for developing high performance TCES materials, thereby promoting progress in the field of TCES.

High-performance SrFe 12 O 19 meets the current demands for lightweight and high-efficiency devices. In this study, Sm‒(Co/Zn/Ca) co-doped spherical SrFe 12 O 19 powders were synthesized via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. This approach overcomes the limitation of single Sm doping in M-type strontium ferrite, which enhances coercivity but decreases saturation magnetization. The effects of co-doping on the structural and magnetic properties of the material were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and both room-temperature and low-temperature vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Among all the synthesized samples, SrSm 0.20 Zn 0.05 Fe 11.75 O 19 exhibited the highest saturation magnetization ( M s = 78.983 emu/g) while maintaining a coercivity of 7.097 kOe. Compared to SrSm 0.20 Fe 11.80 O 19 , Sm‒Zn co-doping resulted in a 20.12% increase in M s with only a 0.42% reduction in H cj . The results indicate that Zn 2+ preferentially substitutes Fe 3+ at the 4f 2 spin-down sites, reducing the contribution of reverse magnetic moments and thereby enhancing M s . Additionally, as a non-magnetic ion, Zn 2+ does not disrupt Fe‒O‒Fe super-exchange interactions, leading to a minimal reduction in H cj . In contrast, Ca 2+ tends to occupy the 12k and 2a spin-up sites, which reduces spin-up magnetic moments, negatively affecting M s enhancement. Moreover, Co 2+ , being a magnetic ion, disturbs Fe‒O‒Fe super-exchange interactions when incorporated into the SrFe 12 O 19 lattice, leading to a more significant decrease in coercivity. The magneton number ( n B ) calculated from low-temperature VSM confirmed the magnetic moment enhancement effect in the co-doped system, while Mössbauer spectroscopy provided further insights into the hyperfine interactions. This study demonstrates that the Sm‒(Co/Zn/Ca) co-doping strategy effectively balances M s and H cj , significantly improving the magnetic performance of SrFe 12 O 19 . Furthermore, ultrasonic spray pyrolysis proves to be a scalable and cost-effective synthesis method, showing great potential for the large-scale production of high-performance ferrite powders. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing SrFe 12 O 19 magnetic properties and offer new perspectives for its application in permanent magnet technology.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is widely used to save patients with severe respiratory failure. Although the mainstream ECMO membrane material poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) provides excellent gas permeability, its hydrophobicity leads to thrombosis during clinical application. Recently, polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), characterized by high fractional free volume, have emerged as promising alternatives due to their superior permeability and convenient chemical modification. In our previous research, two modified PIM-1 (a typical PIM) membranes, amidoxime-functionalized (AO-PIM-1) and carboxyl/amide-functionalized (C-PIM-1), demonstrated enhanced hemocompatibility and gas-exchange performance. Nevertheless, effective CO2 removal remains challenging since CO2 predominantly exists as bicarbonate (HCO3−) ions in blood. Physiologically, carbonic anhydrase (CA) in alveoli could catalyze the conversion of HCO3− to CO2. Inspired by this natural mechanism, in this study, CA was immobilized onto PIM-1 membranes via 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC)/N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS) coupling. Different grafting conditions including grafting methods and types of PIM-1 substrates were explored. AO-PIM-1 showed optimal enzyme immobilization efficiency (78.35%), of which the immobilized CA retained 89.03% of initial activity after 14 days (versus 39.7% for free CA). ECMO simulation tests confirmed significantly enhanced CO2 removal due to CA catalytic activity. This study provides a promising approach to developing advanced ECMO membranes, addressing current bottlenecks in membrane oxygenator technology, as well as offers a reference for grafting enzymes onto PIMs.

Thermochemical energy storage technology based on the Ca(OH)₂/CaO dehydration-hydration reaction is considered as a promising strategy for addressing the transient storage of renewable energy due to high thermal storage density, long cycle characteristics, and safety. However, this technology suffers from drawbacks like agglomeration and sintering at high temperatures, along with poor cycling stability. In this study, the "dynamic" doping of Ca(OH)₂ with C₃N₄ was introduced to optimize the microstructure of particles, which enhanced the thermal performance, elevated conversion rate, and improved cycling stability, without reducing thermal storage density. In-depth characterizations revealed that C₃N₄ transformed Ca(OH)₂ from a flake-like structure to uniform spherical particles, approximately 10 μm in size. In particular, when the doping amount reached 30 wt%, the thermal storage density increased by 11.10% in contrast to Pure Ca(OH)₂, the peak reaction temperature decreased by 13.98°C, and the conversion rate improved to 91.22%. Simultaneously, the material exhibited excellent anti-caking properties, maintaining a thermal storage density of 776.46 J/g after 20 cycles, representing a 27% augmentation compared to the unmodified sample. The microscale effect of the material was retained. In summary, this outcome showcases outstanding comprehensive properties, taking thermochemical energy storage materials further into practical scenarios.

In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the development of active films for monitoring and maintaining food freshness. However, its further functional diversification remains highly desirable. In this study, the active polycaprolactone (PCL) based membranes loaded with carvacrol (CA) are fabricated via electrospinning technique for grape preservation. Upon touching with ethanol exudate, the resulting membrane is capable of changing from opaque to a reversible transparent packaging (RTP) through interfibrillar fusion during food storage. The RTP exhibits good reusability with light transparency above 80 % after 10 cycles. CA is well-dispersed in the fiber matrix by hydrogen bonding and enriching the membrane with strong antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the release of CA from film matrix is well controlled and predominantly governed by Fickian diffusion. In addition to freshness monitoring, PCL-CA15 can effectively extend the shelf life of grape by about 4 days at 25 °C.

CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) has been widely studied for capacitor applications due to its excellent giant dielectric constant and frequency stability, but its development is limited by its low breakdown field strength ( E b ). To promote E b and primarily clarify the intrinsic mechanism, a synergistic strategy combining Sr substitution for Ca in CCTO ceramics with the polymer pyrolysis method was adopted. With the increase of Sr substitution, the average grain size of the ceramics gradually decreased and E b was remarkably enhanced. In particular, an E b of 106.0 kV/cm at a current density of 0.05 mA/cm 2 was achieved for Ca 0.4 Sr 0.6 Cu 3 Ti 4 O 12 ceramics, which is mainly attributed to the tremendous increase in grain boundary resistance induced by the increase of grain boundary density and formation of the insulating secondary phase SrO resulting from Sr substitution. We hope this study will provide a potential solution for the fabrication of CCTO-based dielectric ceramics with excellent E b .

Effective and sustainable removal of low-concentration phosphate is imperative but challenging for advanced wastewater treatment. Additionally, an eco-friendly and cost-effective treatment and reuse of waste activated sludge is critical. To address these problems, sludge-biochar-based phosphate adsorbents were developed by pyrolyzing waste activated sludge and then functionalizing with Ca–La layered double hydroxide (LDH). The LDH’s structure and adsorption characteristics were optimized by substituting the intercalated ion CO32– with NO3–. A maximal phosphorus adsorption capacity of 78.24 mg of P/g was achieved. Adsorption kinetics showed that 0.2 g/L functionalized sludge biochar effectively lowered PO43––P concentration from 7.0 to <0.02 mg/L within 2 h. The functionalized sludge biochar showed desirable phosphate (7 mg/L) selectivity toward coexisting anions such as sulfate (120 mg/L) and carbonate (250 mg/L), resulting in barely impacted adsorption capabilities. After 4 repetitive adsorption-regeneration experiments, 65.1% adsorption capacity remained. The functionalized sludge biochar was used to remove phosphate from a local wastewater treatment plant. The PO43––P concentration effectively decreased from 1.29 to <0.02 mg/L within 1 h. The promising selectivity and stability of the functionalized sludge biochar are due mostly to selective chemisorption, ion exchange, and phosphate complexation in the inner layer.

Iron-copper/carbon aerogel (Fe–Cu/CA) electrodes were prepared via N₂ carbonization and CO₂ high-temperature activation. Structural characterization indicated that CO₂ activation significantly increased the cathode’s porosity and specific surface area, enhancing the exposure of catalytic active sites. The CO₂-activated Fe–Cu/CA electrodes were used as cathodes in an electro-Fenton (EF) system for treating chemical oxygen demand (COD) and adsorbable organic halide (AOX) in actual printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW). The results showed effective COD removal over a wide pH range (3–8); under optimal conditions (pH = 3, current density 7 mA/cm 2 , aeration rate 0.5 L/min), the COD and AOX removal rates reached 73.0% and 65.5% respectively after 60 min, with a maximum H₂O₂ concentration of 32 mg/L. Fe and Cu served as efficient Fenton catalysts to promote COD degradation. Additionally, the cathode exhibited good catalytic stability, with COD removal rate slightly decreasing from 73.0% to 69.1% after five reuse cycles. This material provides a feasible approach for actual PDW treatment by EF process.

Various sulfur- and iron-bearing materials have been shown promising for reductive immobilization of Cr(VI) in water and soil. Yet, composite Ca-Fe-S materials and the effects of water chemistry and material aging have not been investigated. In this work, we prepared a type of Ca-Fe-S microparticles under the atmospheric conditions through a facile one-pot approach, and tested the particles for reductive immobilization of Cr(VI) in solution and soil. Ca-Fe-S showed 40 % higher removal efficiency of Cr(VI) in solution than FeSO 4 and 10 % higher than CaS x on the basis of equal molar dosage. When a Cr-laden soil was amended by Ca-Fe-S, the leachable concentration of Cr per the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure remained below the regulatory limit of 5 mg L −1 after 730 days of curing, while FeSO 4 and CaS x failed to meet the regulatory threshold. Ca-Fe-S served as a slow-releasing source of Fe 2+ and S 2- , which were able to convert Cr(VI) into the stable final product of Cr(OH) 3 . Ca-Fe-S was able to perform well under a wide range of pH (3.0–9.0) and in the presence of high concentrations of coexisting ions (5 mmol L −1 of Cl - , SO 4 2- , or HCO 3 - ). Moreover, the material remained effective when aged under the atmospheric conditions for 14 days. This study showed that Ca-Fe-S is a highly effective material for efficient sequestration of Cr(VI) in soil and groundwater under various water chemistry and materials aging conditions.
