Conventional fertilizers suffer from uncontrollable nutrient release rates and low utilization efficiency, which lead to environmental issues. An environmentally responsive fertilizer that can regulate nutrient release in response to environmental fluctuation is considered an essential component of sustainable agriculture. In this study, composite hydrogels with temperature/pH responsiveness were prepared by using modified attapulgite (ATP) as the inorganic filler and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and sodium alginate (SA) as the temperature/pH-responsive monomer, and it was used as a carrier of urea to construct the hydrogel fertilizer. The results show that the addition of ATP modified by humic acid and hydrochloric acid to the hydrogel can significantly improve the hydrogel performance, and the hydrogel fertilizers prepared by using these two hydrogels as carriers have excellent environmental responsiveness and slow-release performances. The nutrient release behavior study showed that the hydrogel structure was more easily disrupted, and urea was released more rapidly under acidic and alkaline conditions. The network of the hydrogel collapses and shrinks at 30 °C, while urea was easily released from the hydrogel network. Compared to ordinary urea, the hydrogel fertilizer has an excellent slow-release performance. The environmentally responsive fertilizer would improve nutrient availability and avoid plant root damage and environmental pollution.

In this paper, we fabricated a mechanically stable, self-cleaning, and corrosion-resistant superhydrophobic coating on 5083 aluminum alloy substrates based on attapulgite (ATP) clay, organosilane, and waterborne epoxy resin through air spraying technique. The surface wettability variations, micro-nano scale structures, and chemical compositions of the coating were evaluated using contact angle meter, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) of the spray-coated superhydrophobic surface was increased by five orders of magnitude with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 99.99 %, indicating a significant anti-corrosion capacity. Moreover, the prepared superhydrophobic coating demonstrated enhanced coating/substrate bonding force and abrasion resistance, as they could withstand a sandpaper abrasion distance of 2800 cm, confirming the durability and robustness of the coating.

In this study, attapulgite (AT) and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were grafted together via a silane coupling agent to synthesize attapulgite–graphene oxide (AT–GO) composites and apply them to remove the emulsified oil from the oily wastewater. The structure and morphology of the AT–GO composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, and transmission electron microscopy. The amphiphilicity of the AT–GO composites was evaluated by visual observation of their distribution in the oil–water mixture. The results showed that the AT–GO composites have been successively prepared and have good amphiphilic and interfacial activity. The effects of the pH, demulsifier dosage, temperature, and the mass ratio of AT and GO (RA/G) in the composites on the demulsification performance of AT–GO were studied. It was found that the demulsification process could be completed efficiently and quickly at room temperature. Under optimal demulsification conditions, the demulsification efficiency is above 95%. The demulsification mechanism was studied and discussed. It is believed that the interaction behavior between the AT–GO material and the emulsified molecules of asphaltenes is a key for the demulsification. Once the nanoparticles are combined with the emulsified molecules, the external stirring, vibration, and other mechanical actions provide them enough kinetic energy to destroy the protective film at the oil/water interface and then promote the merging of dispersed oil droplets to realize the oil–water separation.

Solar steam generation has attracted much attention due to its efficient and ecofriendly characteristics for application in water desalination and wastewater treatment. Many strategies have been developed to prepare the photothermal conversion materials. However, it is a challenge for preparing the materials with high energy efficiency, long durability and excellent salt resistance under 1 kW·m −2 illumination by using low-cost materials and simple method. Here, we report an ATP (Attapulgite) based PArG aerogel with low thermal conductivity (0.167 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), high mechanical property and superhydrophilicity by using combination of physical/chemical crosslinking of the ATP, PVA, GO and PA and freeze-drying for the efficient solar steam generation. The as-prepared PArG-A30 aerogel shows aligned three-dimensional porous structure and possesses high evaporation performance both in salt solution and the simulated seawater. The evaporation rate is calculated to be 1.4914 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for pure water, 1.4382 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 20% of NaCl solution and the corresponding energy conversion is found to be 89.5% and 86% under 1 kW·m −2 illumination. In addition, the as-prepared PArG-A30 aerogel shows excellent durability and salt resistance in 20% NaCl solution, indicating the excellent the desalination performance of the resultant PArG-A30 aerogels. This study may offer a new approach to scalable fabricate a novel solar steam generator for the efficient solar steam generation by using simple method and low-cost materials.

In this work, attapulgite (ATP)-based dual sensitive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) composite hydrogel, P(NIPAM-co-AA)/ATP, was prepared by free radical polymerization. The prepared composite hydrogel was characterized via methods of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential analysis and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) etc. The composite hydrogel showed pH and temperature sensitive behaviour, with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 35°C and highest swelling occurred at pH 8.0. The adsorption of methyl violet (MV) can be controlled by the hydrogel responsiveness, and 95.78% of MV can be removed at pH 8.0 and 35°C. The addition of a small amount of ATP (3 Wt%) can improve the swelling ratio and adsorption capacity. Kinetic analysis demonstrated that the experimental data were best fitted to the pseudo-second order model. Isotherm analysis showed that the equilibrium data followed Langmuir model with the adsorption capacity of 168.35 mg g−1. In addition, the composite hydrogel has high adsorption selectivity for cationic dyes, and MV-loaded hydrogel is easy to regenerate, which can be used for successive adsorption cycles. These results demonstrate that the composite hydrogel has potential application in dye wastewater treatment.

Biogas upgrading technology is important for increasing the heating value of biogas through selective adsorption of CO2. In this work, a series of new monoethanolamine (MEA)-modified attapulgite (ATP)-based amorphous silica (a-SiO2) sorbents with a large surface area and oxygen vacancies were prepared by the impregnation method for the selective adsorption of CO2 from simulated biogas. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption results indicated that MEA with suitable loading was anchored onto the external surface of a-SiO2, which could improve the dispersion of rodlike fibers of ATP. MEA loading and reaction temperature optimization experiments showed that the 50MEA/a-SiO2 sorbent achieved the highest CO2 adsorption capacity of 2.14 mmol/g with an amine efficiency of 5.22 mmol/g and 0.32 mol/mol at 60 °C. Furthermore, only a 6.3 and 4.7% reduction of CO2 adsorption capacity occurred after five adsorption–desorption cycles under simulated biogas at 30 and 60 °C adsorption, respectively, indicating that the sorbent has good regenerability and thermal stability. The chemical adsorption was proved to be the CO2 adsorption mechanism of MEA-modified ATP-based a-SiO2 sorbent by XRD and FTIR testing.

In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) modified attapulgite (ATP) supported nano sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (PDA/ATP-nZVI) was rapidly synthesized under acidic conditions, and employed to alleviate Cr(VI) toxicity from an aqueous solution. Kinetic studies revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model, suggesting chemisorption was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Liu isotherm adsorption model was able to better describe the Cr(VI) adsorption isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 134.05 mg/g. The thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred spontaneously, accompanied by the increase in entropy and endothermic reaction . Low concentrations of coexisting ions had negligible effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while high concentrations of interfering ions were able to facilitate the removal of Cr(VI). Reactive species test revealed that Fe 2+ played a key role in Cr(VI) reduction by PDA/ATP-nZVI. PDA enhanced the elimination of Cr(VI) via donation of electrons to Cr(VI) and acceleration of Fe 3+ transformation to Fe 2+ . Furthermore, PDA was able to effectively inhibit the leaching of iron species and generation of ferric hydroxide sludge . Mechanistic study revealed that 72% of Cr(VI) elimination was attributed to reduction/precipitation, while 28% of Cr(VI) elimination was due to the surface adsorption.

Porous silica-based anode materials with high theoretical specific capacity and abundant reserves have attracted popular attention for application in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, poor electrochemical conductivity and mechanical performance hinder the development of silica-based anode materials. In this work, attapulgite/multi-walled carbon nanotube (AT/CNT) composite anode materials were prepared. The structural features of AT/CNT composite aerogels were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). because of the excellent conductivity and porous pathways of AT/CNT anode material, the reversible specific capacity of AT/CNTs containing 0.5 wt.% CNTs (AT-0.5) with a mass loading of 0.67 mg cm −2 was 303.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 50 cycles, and a coulombic efficiency of AT-0.5 was 99.1%. The green LEDs were lit by the assembled battery of AT-0.5. The electrochemical results demonstrated that AT/CNT anode materials possessed practical application values for energy storage. Moreover, the preparation method of AT/CNT anode materials is efficient and environmentally friendly.

The use of attapulgite (ATP)-based materials for adsorption of pollutants from water and wastewater has received growing attention. However, recovering ATP-based adsorbents remains a challenge. In this study, a magnetic adsorbent ATP/CoFe2O4with high tannic acid (TA) adsorptive capacity was fabricated via a facile co-precipitation approach and was well characterized. The loaded CoFe2O4particles were embedded into the adsorbent surfaces to allow magnetic separability. For this material, its TA adsorption kinetics, isotherm behavior, and magnetic separation efficiency are reported. The developed magnetic composites had rapid sorption kinetics of 3 h, high sorption capacity of 109.36 mg/g, and good magnetic separation efficiency of 80%. The used ATP/CoFe2O4was successfully regenerated by NaOH and reused five times without a substantial reduction in TA removal and magnetic performance. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding formation and surface complexation were identified as the sorption mechanisms of TA by ATP/CoFe2O4.Keywords:attapulgite;adsorption;CoFe2O4magnetic nanoparticle;tannic acid

A novel and environmentally friendly attapulgite-based aerogel with a three-dimensional fibrillary network structure was prepared by incorporation of nanometer-sized natural clay crystals, in this case attapulgite (ATP), into degradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), cotton cellulose nanowhisker, and melamine using only a simple blending method and subsequently a freeze-drying process. The ATP-based aerogel exhibits an abundant porosity with an average mesopore size of 8.0 nm in diameter. Compared to fragile and rigid inorganic aerogels, the as-prepared aerogel shows good flexibility and mechanical strength with a compressive strength of 9.65 × 10 4 Pa and 10.19 × 10 4 Pa at 20% and 40% of compressive strain, respectively. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical flame tests show that the resulting aerogel possesses excellent flame retardancy, with an LOI of 59.5%. Microcalorimetry test results show that the total heat release of the aerogel is as low as 5.1 KJ/g. Also, the sample shows a better thermal insulation property, with a thermal conductivity of about 0.045 W m −1 K −1 in air. Taking advantage of a simple and environmentally friendly fabrication, abundant natural clay resources, easy scalability, nearly no pollution emission in the process, and cost-efficient production, the ATP-based aerogel has great potential as ideal flame retardant and thermal insulation materials for many applications such as modern building construction or energy-efficient coatings. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel intercalation structure g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst is successfully fabricated by eutectic technique and calcination method, it shows a better degradation efficiency to tetracycline under the visible light. Moreover, the as-prepared photocatalysts are characterized by a series of means, such as PL, FL spectra, EIS, ESR etc. The improved photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the intercalation effect and conductivity of attapulgite (ATP), which enhanced the optical absorption and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-holes (decay lifetime is 4.3 ns). Moreover, radical trapping experiments and ESR measurement indicated the superoxide radical and photogenerated holes are the major activity species on removing tetracycline in g-C 3 N 4 @ATP. The degradation mechanism and the degradation intermediate products are proposed to better understand the reaction process. Additionally, the work provides a new insight for constructing other high performance, low-cost and intercalation structure photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

Nanocomposites of attapulgite (ATT)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) were prepared with organically modified ATT covering in EVA. Organically modified ATT was prepared using KH550 and organic acid. The effect of nano-hybrid on the flow behavior of model oil containing 15 wt% wax was evaluated. The wax crystallization and crystal morphology of the model oil at low temperature were observed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The results indicated that the nano-hybrid with long-chain organic acid-modified ATT exhibited a better effect compared with the nano-hybrid with short-chain organic acid-modified ATT, pure EVA. In addition, it is interesting to note that EVA (VA = 32%)/stearic acid-modified ATT composite polymeric pour-point depressant (PPD) S-AtPPD(32) provided better cold-flow improvement for the model oil than EVA (VA = 32%)-modified nano-SiO2 composite PPD N-SiPPD (32) with a low dose, which resulted in a regular, bar-shaped, and uniform arrangement of wax morphologies. The pour point of the model oil was reduced from 30°C to −1°C when doped at 200 ppm S-AtPPD(32).
