Facile microwave-hydrothermal method was successfully used to synthesize Beta-bismuth (III) oxide (β-Bi 2 O 3 ) nanopowders under the low calcination temperature (350 °C) with a demonstrated diameter of about 40–200 nm. UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy revealed that the resulting β-Bi 2 O 3 nanopowders exhibited a broad absorption with a low band gap of about 2.64–2.85 eV. When the reaction temperature of microwave-hydrothermal process was 180 °C (the sample is named as 180 MH), an optimal methyl orange (MO) degradation efficiency of 95.0% was achieved after visible light irradiation of 120 min. β-Bi 2 O 3 nanopowders also had a strong degradation effect on the tetracycline (TC). Kinetic studies indicated that the photocatalytic degradation process of MO and TC could be well fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The mechanisms for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation were disclosed as well, and the h + and O 2 •- were dominating radicals for MO degradation. This paper provides a way to synthesize nanostructural materials for wide applications.

UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) and β-glucuronidase (GUS) catalyze entirely distinct metabolism reactions. UGTs are responsible for the glucuronidation of a variety of drugs, endogenous and environmental chemicals, whereas GUS hydrolyzes glucuronides and liberates the parent substrates. Information on the overlap of ligand selectivity between UGT and GUS is essential for exploring the pharmacological or toxicological effects of the inhibitors of these two metabolic enzymes. This study is conducted to test whether UGTs and GUS share common ligands, by investigating the inhibitory effects towards E. coli GUS by a series of UGT typical substrates and inhibitors. Results showed that three typical ligands of UGTs, including two specific substrates (estradiol and trifluoperazine, E2 and TFP) and one selective inhibitor (magnolol, Mag), can inhibit the activity of GUS. Kinetic assays indicated that all the three UGT specific chemicals displayed competitive inhibition, with Ki values of 31.4 (E2), 56.9 (TFP), and 16.6 μM (Mag). Docking studies further revealed that the three chemicals can enter the active sites of GUS by forming contacts with residues Glu-413, Trp-549, Asp-163, Tyr-472, Arg-562, or bound water. Our study indicates that ligand selectivity overlaps between UGTs and GUS, and some chemicals can act as co-inhibitors of these two metabolic enzymes. The pharmacological or toxicological effects of those co-inhibitors require further investigations.

The conversion of waste cooking oil into biodiesel can bring about dual benefits: alleviating environmental pollution and realizing waste recycle. Embryonic zeolite has highly accessible acid sites because of the partially formed or more open zeolitic structure, which can solve problems such as diffusion limitation and inaccessible acid sites that the traditional zeolite catalysts face in the process of macromolecular reactants. In this work, a series of embryonic Beta zeolites were prepared by using mesoporous SBA-15 as a self-sacrificial silica source via a solid-state transformation strategy. NH 3 -TPD and FT-IR pyridine adsorption confirm that Brønsted acid sites have been created in these amorphous form embryonic catalysts. The diffusion property of toluene obtained by a zero-length column method proved that the higher the zeolization degree, the greater the diffusion activation energy. The synergistic effects resulted from the combination of the ordered mesoporous structures (ranging from 2 to 10 nm) stemming from the SBA-15 substrate and the moderate acid sites (∼88 μmol g −1 ) offered the embryonic SBEA-3 catalyst with remarkable catalytic performance for ≥95 % conversion during 20 times cycling tests and more than 90 % methyloleate yield.

Nano-sized zeolite Beta aggregates with interparticle mesopores were synthesized by the aerosol-assisted method. The amorphous powders in the Na 2 O–Al 2 O 3 −SiO 2 system, which was obtained from an aerosol drying process, were used as the precursor. The zeolite was crystallized in a high concentration system with high alkalinity. This can not only improve the autoclave utilization and the crystallization rate, but also reduce the amount of both template and waste water. The obtained zeolite Beta is spherical nano-aggregates with interparticle mesopores. It shows high BET surface area and good Al species distribution. The study on crystallization process indicated that the precursor gradually dissolved under the strong alkaline condition and the nano-sized zeolite crystals were formed in the liquid phase as time prolonged. Therefore, the transformation mechanism mainly followed the liquid-phase mechanism. More importantly, the zeolite beta synthesized by aerosol-assisted method exhibited good catalytic activity and stability in the cracking reaction of 1,3,5-TIPB.

A novel porous zeolite beta coating/PSSF composite was prepared by secondary growth method in fluoride media. The morphology of zeolite beta coating/PSSF composite was characterized by SEM and the structural and textual properties of composite were characterized by XRD and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms on ASAP 2020, respectively. The thermal stability of composite was analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that well-intergrown and continuous zeolite beta coating with highly crystallinity were successfully synthesized on the surface of paper-like stainless steel fibers support. The structures of zeolite beta coating/PSSF composite were three-dimensional network with large void volume and majority of microporous structure. The thickness of zeolite beta coating on stainless steel fibers is approximate 2 μm. The specific surface area (SBET) and the total pore volume of composite were 118 m2 g−1 and 0.067 cm3 g−1, respectively. The composite was stable at temperature up to 650 °C.

Chiral zeolitic materials with intrinsically chiral frameworks are highly desired because they can combine both shape selectivity and enantioselectivity. In the field of zeolite, the synthesis of chiral polymorph A of zeolite Beta or chiral polymorph A-enriched zeolite Beta is one of the biggest challenges. We demonstrate here a generalized extremely concentrated fluoride route for the synthesis of chiral polymorph A-enriched zeolite Beta in the presence of five achiral organic structure-directing agents. The polymorph A-enriched Ti-Beta shows a higher enantioselectivity for the asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes than the normal Ti-Beta.

Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has recently been attracted much attention, and catalytic combustion is one of good methods for solving this problem. In this research, we show a successful preparation of mesoporous Beta zeolite-supported Pt catalyst (Pt–R/Beta-H) and its superior performance in the catalytic combustion of toluene. N 2 sorption isotherms show that the mesopore volume of Pt–R/Beta-H reaches 0.18 cm 3 /g, and TEM images exhibit that the Pt particles exist in both micropores and mesopores of the sample. Interestingly, the Pt particles on Pt–R/Beta-H have higher dispersion than the Pt particles on conventional Beta zeolite (Pt–R/Beta). XPS spectra also reveal that Pt–R/Beta-H has higher Pt 0 /Pt 2+ ratio than Pt–R/Beta. Very importantly, Pt–R/Beta-H exhibits much higher catalytic activities and longer catalyst life as well as lower apparent activation energy in the catalytic combustion of toluene than Pt–R/Beta. The extraordinary performance in the catalytic combustion of toluene over Pt–R/Beta-H catalyst is of great importance for obtaining clean environment and enhancing human health.

Introduction CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology has significantly advanced gene therapy, with gene vectors being one of the key factors for its success. Poly (beta-amino ester) (PBAE), a distinguished non-viral cationic gene vector, is known to elevate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, which may cause cytotoxicity and, consequently, impact gene transfection efficacy (T.E.). Objectives To develop a simple but efficient strategy to improve the gene delivery ability and biosafety of PBAE both in vivo and in vitro . Methods We used glutathione (GSH), a clinically utilized drug with capability to modulating intracellular ROS level, to prepare a hybrid system with PBAE-plasmid nanoparticles (NPs). This system was characterized by flow cytometry, RNA-seq, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing in vitro , and its safety and efficacy in vivo was evaluated by imaging, PCR, Sanger sequencing and histology analysis. Results The particle size of GSH-PBAE-plasmid NPs were 168.31 nm with a ζ-potential of 15.21 mV. An enhancement in T.E. and gene editing efficiency, ranging from 10 % to 100 %, was observed compared to GSH-free PBAE-plasmid NPs in various cell lines. In vitro results proved that GSH-PBAE-plasmid NPs reduced intracellular ROS levels by 25 %–40 %, decreased the total number of upregulated/downregulated genes from 4,952 to 789, and significantly avoided the disturbance in gene expression related to cellular oxidative stress-response and cell growth regulation signaling pathway compared to PBAE-plasmid NPs. They also demonstrated lower impact on the cell cycle, slighter hemolysis, and higher cell viability after gene transfection. Furthermore, GSH hybrid PBAE-plasmid NPs exhibited superior safety and improved tumor suppression ability in an Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-infected murine tumor model, via targeting cleavage the EBV related oncogene by delivering CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system and down-regulating the expression levels. This simple but effective strategy is expected to promote clinical applications of non-viral vector gene delivery.

This study examines the inhibitory effects of a range of sweeteners on α-glucosidase. Our findings revealed that only one natural sweetener, namely, glycyrrhetinic acid 3-O-mono-beta-d-glucuronide (GAMG), derived from licorice, exhibited a mixed-type inhibition against α-glucosidase with a IC50 value of 0.73 ± 0.05 mg/mL. The fluorescence intensity of α-glucosidase was quenched by GAMG in the formation of an α-glucosidase–GAMG complex. GAMG has been shown to induce conformational changes in α-glucosidase, likely through hydrogen bonding, van der Waals force, and alkyl–alkyl interactions with amino acid residues, including Arg 281, Leu 283, Trp 376, Asp 404, Asp 443, Trp 481, Asp 518, Phe 525, Ala 555, and Asp 616. Additional animal validation experiments demonstrated that GAMG slowed starch digestion, thereby attenuating the postprandial glycemic response. Taken together, these findings provide evidence that GAMG is a natural sweetener with potent inhibitory activity that selectively targets α-glucosidase. This study supports the use of GAMG as a natural sweetener, which holds a high biological value and may be beneficial for managing postprandial hyperglycemia.

The utilization of racemic lactic acid (rac-LA) produced via chemocatalytic conversion for polylactic acid (PLA) synthesis remains limited due to the formation of undesired mesomeric lactide (meso-LD), a by-product that arises during the conversion process. This study proposes the use of shape-selective H-Beta zeolite to reduce the formation of meso-LD in lactide (LD) by leveraging its selectivity towards different lactic dimers (L2A) in a one-step catalytic conversion of rac-LA to LD. Experimental results from various LA solutions with different L2A content indicate that the L2A content is critical for maximizing the selectivity of racemic lactide (D/L-LD), thus confirming the shape-selective nature of H-Beta zeolite towards L2A. Additionally, it is found that increasing the reaction temperature and employing structurally reconstructed H-Beta zeolite with more regularized channels as a catalyst can further decrease meso-LD formation, and a LD yield of 60% with a D/L-LD/meso-LD ratio of 2.26 can be achieved under optimal catalyst and reaction conditions. Despite the coexistence of D/L-LD and meso-LD in the final product, this study marks a significant step towards controlling the stereoisomer distribution of LD synthesized from rac-LA derived from chemical conversion.

Zeolite Beta, discovered in 1967, features a unique three-dimensional (3D) 12-ring channel system and a highly tunable Si/Al ratio (SAR), granting exceptional stability and acidity crucial for catalysis. While conventional hydrothermal synthesis normally yields zeolite Beta with the SAR range of 10–30 using tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) as the organic structure-directing agent (OSDA), the discovery of Al-rich natural mineral (Tschernichite) with the ∗BEA topology (SAR∼3.3) spurred efforts to synthesize low-SAR Beta zeolite for enhanced acid site density, hydrophilicity and ion-exchange capacity, enabling applications like dehydration, separation and shape-selective catalysis. However, achieving low SARs for the hydrothermal crystallization of zeolite Beta is still challenging, requiring excess Na + which promotes impurity phases (e.g., GIS , ANA , MOR ), prolongs crystallization period and reduces yield. Inspired by our recent work on the kinetic-control synthesis of high-silica NaY zeolite using aluminophosphate as the aluminum carrier, this study presents an accelerated, impurity-free synthetic route to achieve Al-rich zeolite Beta. Using the pre-synthesized aluminophosphate (e.g., AlPO-5) as a partial Al source favors the formation of a silica-rich Beta zeolite nucleus, thus effectively suppresses impurities (eliminating GIS phase in Na + -containing system) and amorphous phase (in Na + -free system), ultimately accelerating crystallization process. Based on this synthetic control, this study successfully synthesized the phase-pure Beta zeolite at SAR of 7.55 (Na + -free) and 6.58 (Na + -containing), while this strategy was extended to the Beta zeolite synthesis with other aluminophosphate, including SSZ-51 ( SFO) and AlPO-18 ( AEI) .

Butene plays an essential role in the area of petrochemical industry. The production of butene from the biomass-derived platform molecule γ-valerolactone (GVL) is of great interest. GVL decarboxylation reaction occurred under high temperature because the catalytic activity of the catalysts used before was not efficient for this reaction. In this work, beta zeolite with Si:Al = 5 was synthesized and used for GVL decarboxylation. It exhibited a higher catalytic performance than other commercial zeolites due to a large number of Lewis acid sites and relatively large micropore size. At 300 °C, 99.5% GVL conversion and 98% butene yield were obtained after condition optimizing. For further research, the influence of the Brønsted/Lewis acid ratio was investigated, and it turned out that Lewis acid was more active than Brønsted acid in crystalline material on GVL decarboxylation for the first time.
