Graphical Break away : Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been incorporated as a sensitizer into TiO 2 films to regulate the light-induced cell-detachment performance. This incorporation inhibits charge recombination of the TiO 2 system under UV illumination, which increases the negative surface potential and changes the secondary structure of adsorbed extracellular protein molecules, and consequently results in a faster release of cells (see figure). Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been incorporated as a sensitizer into TiO 2 films to regulate the light-induced cell-detachment performance. Depending on the amount of CQDs incorporated, nanodots or porous films are obtained. It was found that the right amount of CQDs incorporation significantly improves the cell-sheet detachment efficiency, and an intact cell sheet could be obtained after merely five minutes of UV illumination (365 nm, UV365), which is much faster than that from CQDs-free TiO 2 film. Furthermore, cell sheets on CQDs-sensitized TiO 2 films show improved viability, and alkaline phosphatase and collagen I activity either before or after light-induced detachment. The improved cell-detachment performance is ascribed to the effective inhibition of charge recombination of the TiO 2 film and the microstructure variations, which increase the negative surface potential and change the secondary structure of the adsorbed extracellular protein molecules; this results in a faster release of cells. It is suggested that the faster release reduces the possible detrimental impact on cell functions during detachment and helps in maintaining the excellent cellular activity. This study demonstrates that CQDs sensitization is an effective approach for optimizing the performance of light-induced cell-sheet harvest.

The electrochemical sensor fused with the principle of immunoassay can recognize the specific binding reaction of antigen and antibody, and transduce it directly into an electrical signal, realizing the rapid detection of relevant disease markers in the liquid sample. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for detecting eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), a marker of allergic rhinitis, was constructed based on a chemically modified electrode , and the surface of the carbon electrode was modified with semiconductor colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). Owing to the remarkable surface effect, size effect and unique quantum effect of CQDs, which can improve the enrichment of biomolecules and signal transduction on the surface of the carbon electrode, the lead sulfide (PbS) CQDs have good adhesion to the carbon electrode. On the basis of the ECP antibody coating and sealing treatment on the surface of the CQDs modified working electrode , the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was combined to significantly reduce the background current for electrochemical performance test, and then the quantitative detection of ECP antigen of different concentrations can be achieved. The detection time of the electrochemical sensor for ECP antigen was about 30 seconds, and the detection limit was 0.508 pg mL −1 . The electrochemical sensor has the characteristics of high sensitivity, convenience and non-invasiveness, showing the potential for early screening of diseases such as allergic rhinitis.

Developing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with the solvatochromic effect and exploring multifunctional applications remains challenging. Herein, robust solvatochromic carbon quantum dots ( RS -CQDs) with emission shift up to ∼62 nm from yellow to red was fabricated by the hydrothermal method. The RS -CQDs was used to detect water and Sn 4+ in the linear ranges and limits of detection of 2.0–97.6% and 0.14% and 6.24–53.18 μM and 66.3 nM, respectively, and was further applied to determine Sn 4+ in practical water samples with satisfactory results. In addition, RS -CQDs exhibited bright red emission in oil media with a 9.7-fold increase in fluorescence relative to aqueous media, making them a wash-free probe for specifically staining lipids. Compared to the commercial lipid marker BODIPY 493/503, the RS -CQDs-based probe has significant advantages, such as longer emission, larger Stokes shift, and better photostability, ensuring that RS -CQDs-based marker can implement real-time and wash-free monitoring and imaging of lipids in living cells, liver tissues, zebrafish embryos, and zebrafish larvae. This study provides a novel research direction for the development of metal-doped CQDs by demonstrating RS -CQDs as the viability of fluorescence probes for water and Sn 4+ detection and the efficiency of RS -CQDs as a fluorescent marker for lipid imaging.

To improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity and anti-photocorrosion of Ag 3 PO 4 , novel 3D core-shell CQDs/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine tetrapods with more exposure of {110} facets of Ag 3 PO 4 has been successfully synthesized for the first time by electrochemical oxidation, chemical precipitation and molecular self-assembly reaction. In CQDs/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine tetrapods, CQDs could not only induce more photocarrier generation from high-energy facets of Ag 3 PO 4 tetrapods but also accelerate the electrons transfer from conduction band of Ag 3 PO 4 tetrapods to the bottom of conduction band of CQDs. Furthermore, silver amine complex could act as a bridge for the photo-electrons flowing from core to shell, which is beneficial to the subsequent free radical chain reaction. In addition, the 3D core-shell structure decreased the solubility of Ag 3 PO 4 . UV–vis DRS, indicating that the band gap of CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine (1.65 eV) was far less than that of Ag 3 PO 4 tetrapods (2.0 eV) and traditional Ag 3 PO 4 (2.45 eV). Moreover, the photocurrent tests showed that CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine had perfect drift ability of generated photocarriers. Accordingly, the CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine tetrapods exhibited excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity and anti-photocorrosion performance. More than 93% of Methylorange and rhodamine B could be photodegraded within 16 min and 10 min over CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine tetrapods, respectively. Even after 9 cycles, CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine could still remain 95% removal rate of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with 10 min. Through recycling catalytic experiments and photodegradation pathway explore of SMX, the CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine composite suggest its great mineralization capability on sulfonamide antibiotics. The free radicals trapping experiments demonstrated that the holes photoinduced were the main active oxidizing species which played the dominant role in the photocatalytic process. Thus, CQDs(0.38%)/Ag 3 PO 4 @benzoxazine is a promising visible-light responses catalyst for photodegradation of organic pollutants in the environmental protection.

In this study, a novel nitrogen-chlorine-codoped carbon quantum dots (NCl-CQDs) with low toxicity, thermal stability, good fluorescence properties, biocompatibility and high sensitivity was successfully prepared by hydrothermal carbonization. Based on the above advantages of NCl-CQDs, the NCl-CQDs was used to construct fluorescence sensing system for fluorescence probes. The maximum fluorescence emission wavelength was obtained at 470 nm when the excitation wavelength was 390 nm. The fluorescence signal was in the state of “ON”. The introduction of 2,6-Dichloroindophenol Sodium (DCIP) resulted in the quenching of fluorescence intensity due to photoinduced electron transfer between DCIP and NCl-CQDs. At this point, the color of the solution changed from brownish-yellow to light blue, indicating that the fluorescence signal was in an “OFF” state. Upon addition of ascorbic acid (AA) to the NCl-CQDs/DCIP system, the corresponding fluorescence signal was restored due to the special interaction between AA and DCIP. The color of the corresponding solution changed from light blue to colorless. The fluorescence signal was in the “on” state. Therefore, an “ON-OFF-ON” sensing system and colorimetric sensing system for AA was constructed using the NCl-CQD fluorescence probe. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the proposed methods exhibited satisfactory linear ranges. Specifically, the linear range for AA detection by the fluorescence sensor spanned from 1.2 μM to 180.33 μM, while that by the colorimetric sensor ranged from 1.32 μM to 166.55 μM. The corresponding detection limits were determined to be 0.68 μM and 0.55 μM, respectively. In summary, this sensing system could effectively enhance selectivity, sensitivity, and accuracy by preventing false positive detection results caused by environmental and system errors.

In response to the need for efficient elimination of methylene blue (MB) from dye-containing wastewater, a Mo, N-co-doped carbon quantum dot-modified BiVO 4 (5% Mo, N-CQDs/BiVO 4 ) composite photocatalyst was developed. Pristine BiVO 4 suffers from rapid charge carrier recombination and limited visible-light utilization. Introduction of Mo, N-CQDs establishes a synergistic enhancement mechanism: (1) Mo, N-CQDs act as electron mediators, improving interfacial charge separation and migration, as evidenced by reduced charge transfer resistance. Mo doping introduces impurity energy levels that trap electrons and retard recombination, while nitrogen doping enhances electron tunneling and reduces interfacial resistance. (2) UV-Vis DRS confirms bandgap narrowing and enhanced visible-light absorption. (3) Photoelectrochemical analysis reveals significantly enhanced photocurrent response and reduced charge transfer resistance, confirming improved charge separation efficiency. Under visible light, the composite achieved a degradation rate constant of 0.04089 min −1 toward MB, a 3.31-fold enhancement over pure BiVO 4 , with >95% removal within 80 min. Radical trapping identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) as the predominant active species, with h + contributing ∼62% of the activity. The catalyst retained 88.65% of its initial efficiency after four cycles, demonstrating good stability. This study provides a viable charge-regulation strategy using multi-element co-doped carbon quantum dots for semiconductor modification, highlighting its potential in dye wastewater treatment.

Nb2CTx-MXene with CQDs-modified catalyst was rationally designed and synthesized. • The composite exhibited highly efficient PMS activation for CBZ degradation. • Synergistic radical and non-radical oxidation pathways were experimentally validated. • Identifying key active sites and the degradation pathways improved understanding of Nb2CTx@CQDs catalytic performance. Persistent organic pollutants present long-term risks to aquatic ecosystems, calling for oxidation processes with well-defined activation mechanisms. In this work, an Nb 2 CTx- MXene composite decorated with ginger-derived carbon quantum dots (Nb 2 CTx@CQDs) was constructed to investigate interfacial peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation in water. The surface chemistry, textural properties, and electronic features of the composite were systematically characterized. The Nb 2 CTx@CQDs(5 wt.%)/PMS system achieved 94.7 % CBZ removal within 50 min, corresponding to a pseudo-first-order rate constant k of 0.0598 min -1 under optimized conditions. Density functional theory calculations, together with Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, revealed the evolution of key intermediates and supported a stepwise CBZ degradation pathway. Mechanistic results indicate that PMS activation is governed by coupled radical and non-radical processes, promoted by CQDs-modified Nb 2 CTx surfaces playing a decisive role while, the evaluation of ecotoxicity analysis of CBZ intermediates suggested that they are much less harmful for ecosystem. This study highlights the importance of MXene surface modulation with CQDs for regulating PMS activation pathways and provides mechanistic insights relevant to advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of organic pollutants. Human carboxylesterase 1 (hCE1) is a serine hydrolase that is distributed widely in the human liver, intestines, and various tumour tissues. It has now become a biomarker associated with diseases such as cancer. Consequently, the measurement of hCE1 levels in human serum is of significant importance for the diagnosis and assessment of these diseases. The present study involved the preparation of Ag/CQDs/ZIF-8 nanocomposites, which incorporated silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into the ZIF-8 framework. The combination of this composite with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the utilisation of benzidine as the signal molecule resulted in the development of a fluorescence (FL)/surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode sensor, which was employed for the sensitive detection of hCE1 in serum. This dual-mode sensor combines the advantages of both FL and SERS technologies, demonstrating excellent selectivity and stability, and enhancing the accuracy and reliability of quantitative measurements. The limits of detection (LOD) for the FL mode and SERS mode were determined to be 0.1 and 0.072 ng·mL − 1 , respectively, with the recoveries ranging from 92.44% to 117.47%. The satisfactory outcomes obtained from testing on real sample confirm the sensor’s excellent suitability for use in complex biological matrices. Consequently, this dual-mode sensor shows considerable promise for the detection of biomolecules in clinical samples, thereby demonstrating significant potential for clinical applications. In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized via a microwave-assisted route using citric acid and o-phenylenediamine as precursors. A deep eutectic solvent was subsequently constructed using choline chloride as the hydrogen bond acceptor and glycerol/acrylamide as hydrogen bond donors. The N-CQDs were introduced as functional nanofillers, and a P(AM-Gly-ChCl)/N-CQDs composite hydrogel was obtained through photopolymerization. The chemical composition and microstructure of the composite hydrogel were systematically characterized by SEM, XPS, and FTIR, verifying the effective incorporation of N-CQDs into the hydrogel network. The effect of N-CQDs content on the mechanical, sensing, and adsorption properties of the hydrogel was elucidated. With increasing N-CQDs content, both tensile fracture stress and tear energy were substantially improved. The composite hydrogel exhibited an enhanced pressure-sensitive response, with a relative capacitance change of 137.0% achieved at an applied load of 1 N for the hydrogel containing 0.3 wt% N-CQDs. In addition, incorporation of N-CQDs endowed the hydrogel with effective Fe3+ adsorption capability and pronounced fluorescence quenching behavior, highlighting its potential for multifunctional applications that integrate pressure sensing and metal-ion detection.

Detection of tumor biomarkers is critical for early cancer diagnosis and cancer therapeutic monitoring, but traditional methods often lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity, especially at low biomarker concentrations. To address this challenge, in this study a multiplex detection platform based on core–shell quantum dot-encoded silica microspheres was developed for highly sensitive, simultaneous detection of multiple tumor biomarkers in a single assay. The core–shell silica architecture provides a high surface area for bioconjugation, while embedded quantum dots (QDs) offer strong fluorescence, making them ideal labels. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), which have low toxicity, superior biocompatibility, and high photostability, were used as reporter molecules instead of organic dyes. This choice improved detection sensitivity and reduced the detection system’s environmental toxicity relative to traditional dye-based assays. After optimizing QD–silica conjugation and immunoassay conditions, the platform achieved highly sensitive multiplex detection of four tumor biomarkers (AFP, CEA, CA125, CA19-9) commonly used in early cancer screening. Results demonstrated specific detection of all four targets within a short time frame, with excellent stability and reproducibility. By enhancing sensitivity for these biomarkers and reducing assay toxicity while improving stability, this platform shows significant potential to greatly improve early cancer screening and cancer therapeutic monitoring in clinical practice.

Although the salt-adjusted properties of nanomaterials have been extensively used for colorimetric assays of all kinds of analytes, their applications in the design of fluorescence sensor are very limited. Herein, a novel fluorescence aptasensor was developed for the sensitive determination of Bisphenol S (BPS) by the salt-adjusted fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the zero-dimensional emitter (CQDs) and the two-dimensional absorber (MoS 2 nanosheets) and the roles of specific discrimination and protective effect of anti-BPS aptamer to layered MoS 2 . It is shown that layered MoS 2 can serve as a good fluorescent quencher towards carbon dots with decent quenching efficiency. Importantly, the established fluorescent method achieved satisfactory results for the determination of BPS with a good linear correlation from 0.05 μM to 2 μM and a detection limit of 2 nM. It is expected that this method may offer a new direction for the application of the phenomenon of salt-assisted aggregation of nanomaterials in designing high-performance fluorescent biosensors.

Ternary metal chalcogenides as promising photocatalysts and introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a dopant to enhance their photocatalytic activity. In this study, MoIn 2 S 4 and MoIn 2 S 4 /CQDs composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized utilizing an in-situ hydrothermal method, in which citric acid served as both the carbon source and surfactant. Among the prepared catalysts, the MoIn 2 S 4 /CQDs composite photocatalyst with the optimal ratio (MoIS/CQDs-1.0 g) exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance, achieving a removal rate of 94.4 % for methylene blue (MB) after 60 min of simulated solar illumination. The superior performance was primarily attributed to the upconversion photoluminescence effect of CQDs , which enhanced the light absorption of MoIn 2 S 4 . Also, the few-layer configuration of MoIn 2 S 4 as a matrix possessed numerous active sites to significantly minimize the aggregation of CQDs . Furthermore, the CQDs acted as electron acceptors and transport centers, inhibiting the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and accelerating electron transfer. Additionally, through trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, the primary active species responsible for photocatalytic degradation was identified as superoxide radicals (·O 2 – ). Based on these findings, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for MoIS/CQDs-1.0 g was proposed. This study provided a novel, stable and efficient MoIn 2 S 4 modified with CQDs photocatalyst for water treatment.
