This work focuses on the development of a novel high-temperature microemulsion for enhanced oil recovery in tight oil reservoirs. Microemulsions are a type of mixture that has properties of both liquids and solids; they have shown significant potential for improving oil recovery through spontaneous imbibition. Herein, a high-temperature-tolerant lower-phase microemulsion using a microemulsion dilution method was developed. The properties and morphological characteristics of the microemulsion were evaluated and proposed a mechanism for enhanced spontaneous imbibition oil recovery using imbibition tests and CT scanning technology. The results of the study showed that the optimum concentration of the microemulsion was 0.2 wt% and that it had good thermal stability, small droplet size, lower interfacial tension, good wettability alteration ability, and minimum adsorption loss. The imbibition and CT experiments demonstrated that the reduction in oil/solid adhesion was due to the synergistic effect of IFT reduction and wettability alteration and the ability to increase the imbibition distance through a larger self-driving force. The study concludes that the solubilization coefficient and self-driving force were defined and calculated to quantitatively analyze the imbibition mechanisms and the results showed that the reduction in oil/solid adhesion was due to the synergistic effect of IFT reduction and wettability alteration and the ability to increase the imbibition distance through a larger self-driving force.

In vivo behavior of hydrogel-based biomaterials is very important for rational design of hydrogels for various biomedical applications. Herein, we developed a facile method for in situ fabrication of radiopaque hydrogel. An iodinated functional diblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) and aliphatic polyester was first synthesized by coupling the hydroxyl end of the diblock copolymer with 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIB) and then a radiopaque thermoreversible hydrogel was obtained by mixing it with the virgin diblock copolymer. A concentrated aqueous solution of the copolymer blend was injectable at room temperature and spontaneously turned into an in situ hydrogel at body temperature after injection. The introduction of TIB moieties affords the capacity of X-ray opacity, enabling in vivo visualization of the hydrogel using Micro-CT. A rat model with cecum and abdominal defects was utilized to evaluate the efficacy of the radiopaque hydrogel in the prevention of post-operative adhesions, and a significant reduction of the post-operative adhesion formation was confirmed. Meanwhile, the maintenance of the radiopaque hydrogel in the abdomen after administration was non-destructively detected via Micro-CT scanning. The reconstructed three-dimensional images showed that the radiopaque hydrogel with an irregular morphology was located on the injured abdominal wall. The time-dependent profile of the volume of the radiopaque hydrogel determined by Micro-CT imaging was well consistent with the trend obtained from the dissection observation. Therefore, the radiopaque thermoreversible hydrogel can serve as a potential visualized biomedical implant and this practical mixing approach is also useful for further extension into the in vivo monitoring of other biomaterials. Statement of Significance While a variety of biomaterials have been extensively studied, it is rare to monitor in vivo degradation and medical efficacy of a material after being implanted deeply into the body. Herein, the radiopaque thermoreversible hydrogel developed by us not only holds desirable performance on the prevention of post-operative abdominal adhesions, but also allows non-invasive monitoring of its in vivo degradation with CT imaging in a real-time, quantitative and three-dimensional manner. The methodology based on CT imaging provides important insights into the in vivo fate of the hydrogel after being deeply implanted into mammals for different biomedical applications and significantly reduces the amount of animals sacrificed.

In this study, a 99m Tc-labeled small molecule imaging probe [ 99m Tc]Tc-PG3C-CBM for PD-L1 imaging was designed. It showed a radiochemical yield of > 97% and good in vitro stability. Uptake in A375-hPD-L1 cells (17.07 ± 1.40%) was 4.5 times higher than in A375 cells (3.81 ± 0.19%). The probe demonstrated moderate PD-L1 affinity (K D : 11.6 ± 2.57 nM; IC 50 : 59.2 ± 2.40 nM). Additionally, SPECT/CT imaging and biodistribution results indicated that [ 99m Tc]Tc-PG3C-CBM was mainly metabolized by the liver and showed some accumulation at the tumor site. These results suggest that [ 99m Tc]Tc-PG3C-CBM could potentially target PD-L1 at tumor sites.

Purpose In this study, a novel aluminium-[ 18 F]fluoride (Al 18 F)-labelled 1,4,7‑triazacyclononane-N,N′,N″-triacetic acid (NOTA)-conjugated fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) probe, named Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI, was developed for fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-targeted tumour imaging; it could deliver hundreds of millicuries of radioactivity using automated synthesis. The tumour detection efficacy of Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI was further validated in both preclinical and clinical translational studies. Methods The radiolabelling procedure of Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI was optimized. Cell uptake and competitive binding assays were completed with the U87MG and A549 cell lines to evaluate the affinity and specificity of the Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI probe. The biodistribution, pharmacokinetics, radiation dosimetry and tumour imaging efficacy of the Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI probe were researched in healthy Kunming (KM) and/or U87MG model mice. After the approval of the ethical committee, the Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI probe was translated into the clinic for PET/CT imaging of the first 10 cancer patients. Results The radiolabelling yield of Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI was 33.8 ± 3.2% using manual synthesis ( n = 10), with a radiochemical purity over 99% and the specific activity of 9.3–55.5 MBq/nmol. The whole body effective dose of Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI was estimated to be 1.24E − 02 mSv/MBq, which was lower than several other FAPI probes ( 68 Ga-FAPI-04, 68 Ga-FAPI-46 and 68 Ga-FAPI-74). In U87MG tumour-bearing mice, Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI showed good tumour detection efficacy based on the results of micro PET/CT imaging and biodistribution studies. In an organ biodistribution study of patients, Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI showed a lower SUVmean than 2-[ 18 F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-[ 18 F]FDG) in most organs, especially in the liver (1.1 ± 0.2 vs. 2.0 ± 0.9), brain (0.1 ± 0.0 vs. 5.9 ± 1.3), and bone marrow (0.9 ± 0.1 vs. 1.7 ± 0.4). Meanwhile, Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI did not show extensive bone uptake, and was able to detect more lesions than 2-[ 18 F]FDG in the PET/CT imaging of several patients. Conclusion The Al 18 F-NOTA-FAPI probe was successfully fabricated and applied in fibroblast activation protein-targeted tumour PET/CT imaging, which showed excellent imaging quality and tumour detection efficacy in U87MG tumour-bearing mice as well as in cancer patients. High-performance theranostic nanoagents, which integrate multimodal imaging and photothermal therapy for clinical anticancer treatment, are highly desired. Herein, we report the synthesis and bioapplication of a multifunctional theranostic nanoagent based on polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified polypyrrole (PPy)-coated bismuth (Bi) nanohybrids (referred to as Bi@PPy-PEG NHs) for X-ray computed tomography/photoacoustic (CT/PA) dual-modal imaging and photothermal therapy (PTT). The obtained Bi@PPy-PEG NHs have a distinct core–shell structure with the metallic Bi nanoparticle as the inner core and the PPy-PEG layer as the shell. The Bi@PPy-PEG NHs show excellent physiological stability and compatibility, without noticeable cytotoxicity. Importantly, the NHs exhibit strong NIR absorbance and remarkable photothermal conversion capability and conversion stability, with the photothermal conversion efficiency as high as ∼46.3%. Thanks to the strong PTT effect, highly effective photothermal ablation on cancer cells has been achieved both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, a high-contrast in vitro and in vivo CT/PA dual-modal imaging has been realized, showing great potential to provide comprehensive diagnosis information for antitumor treatment. In particular, the CT enhancement efficiency of the NHs is of ∼14.4 HU mM–1, which is ∼3.7-fold that of clinically used iohexol. Therefore, our work highlights the potential of using such core–shell Bi@PPy-PEG NHs as a versatile theranostic nanoplatform for cancer imaging and therapy.

Owing to the high X-ray absorption, Bi 2 S 3 nanocrystals are widely used as CT contrast agents. Here, we prepared uniform Bi 2 S 3 nanorods via a hot injection method using bismuth (III) chloride, sulfur and oleyl amine. The resulting nanocrystals were coated with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and 2-[methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)propyl]yrimethoxysilane (PEG-silane) for the biological utility. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the Bi 2 S 3 nanorods had an orthorhombic structure with the length of 14 nm and the diameter of 7 nm, respectively. Composite nanoparticles (0.0226 M) gave a CT number at 550 (HU), which was higher than that of the commercial available iobitridol CT contrast agent. Furthermore, cell experiments revealed that Bi 2 S 3 composite nanoparticles had a low cytotoxicity with a concentration up to 0.01 M of Bi for 24 h.

In this work, water-soluble Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3 upconversion (UC) nanospheres with uniform morphology have been successfully synthesized via a solid-state-chemistry thermal decomposition process. With 980 nm near-infrared irradiation, the Bi2O3:Yb3+/Er3+ nanospheres have bright UC luminescence (UCL). Moreover, multicolor UC emissions (from green to red) can be tuned by simply changing the Yb3+ ions doping concentration. After citric acid molecules were grafted on the surface of Bi2O3:20% Yb3+/2% Er3+ nanospheres, the MTT assay on HeLa cells and CCK-8 assay on osteoblasts show that the UC nanospheres exhibit excellent stability and biocompatibility. The possibility of using these nanoprobes with red UCL for optical imaging in vivo has been demonstrated. Furthermore, Bi3+ and Yb3+ containing nanospheres as binary contrast agent also exhibited significant enhancement of contrast efficacy than iodine-based contrast agent via X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging at different voltage setting (80–140 kVp), indicating they have potential as CT imaging contrast agent. Thus, Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3 nanospheres could be used as dual modality probe for optical and CT imagings.

Colorectal cancer ranks as the third most prevalent cancer globally, with its incidence increasing in many developed countries. While chemotherapy demonstrates efficacy for certain patients, it is associated with significant side effects, and prolonged treatment may result in drug resistance. Consequently, this study synthesized Bi 2 S 3 nanosheets via the solution-based method and integrated them with mesoporous silica exhibiting excellent pore channel properties to develop the Bi 2 S 3 @mSiO 2 -PEG/5-FU nanomaterials. Photothermal testing revealed that Bi 2 S 3 @mSiO 2 -PEG/5-FU exhibited superior photothermal heating performance, remarkable photothermal stability, and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 28.3%, enabling effective photothermal therapy. The drug loading capacity of Bi 2 S 3 @mSiO 2 -PEG/5-FU was determined to be 24.8%, with enhanced drug release under acidic conditions and laser irradiation, thereby improving chemotherapeutic efficacy and achieving synergistic effects between chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. Furthermore, Bi 2 S 3 @mSiO 2 -PEG demonstrated robust CT imaging capabilities (14.95 HU mg/mL), establishing the Bi 2 S 3 @mSiO 2 -PEG/5-FU nanomaterials as a platform with integrated diagnostic and therapeutic functionalities.

Contrast agents for multimodal imaging are in high demand for cancer diagnosis. To date, integration of T1/T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging capabilities in one system to obtain an accurate diagnosis still remains challenging. In this work, biocompatible PEGylated GdF3:Fe nanoparticles (PEG-GdF3:Fe NPs) were reasonable designed and synthesized as multifunctional contrast agents for efficient T1/T2-weighted MRI and X-ray CT multimodal imaging. Owing to the enhanced permeability and retention effect in vivo, strong T1 contrast, evident T2 contrast, and X-ray CT signals in a tumor lesion can be observed after intravenous injection of PEG-GdF3:Fe NPs. Therefore, PEG-GdF3:Fe NPs could be used as potential multimodal contrast agents for cancer diagnosis.

Rationale and Objective This study utilized micro-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (micro-PET/CT) to track the longitudinal and dynamic progression of cardiac autonomic nerve injury in diabetic rats. Our objective was to map the precise timeline of neural damage relative to disease stages, defining a sensitive imaging window for the early diagnosis of diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN). Materials and Methods Following streptozotocin induction of type 2 diabetes, rats underwent biweekly micro-PET/CT imaging for up to 17 weeks. Sympathetic and parasympathetic innervations were thoroughly evaluated using [ 11 C]C-MDA and [ 11 C]C-donepezil ([ 11 C]C-DNP), respectively. [ 11 C]C-triphenylmethylphosphonium ([ 11 C]C-TPMP) provided a perfusion baseline to characterize neuro-perfusion mismatches. Quantitative tracer uptake was correlated with histopathological remodeling and the myocardial expression of neurotrophic factors (NGF, GAP-43, CNTF) quantified via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results Longitudinal PET/CT imaging unveiled a distinct chronological cascade of cardiac deterioration. Parasympathetic denervation ([ 11 C]C-DNP depletion) manifested first at week 6, followed by sympathetic denervation ([ 11 C]C-MDA deficit) at week 8. Conversely, myocardial perfusion deficits ([ 11 C]C-TPMP) remained absent until week 16, escalating to severe metabolic dysfunction by week 17. Histopathology confirmed progressive myocardial inflammation, while RT-qPCR indicated a late-stage, yet insufficient, compensatory upregulation of neurotrophic factors. Conclusion This multi-tracer longitudinal investigation establishes that parasympathetic denervation precedes sympathetic impairment during DCAN development, with both deficits predating microvascular and metabolic crises. These insights offer a critical, noninvasive diagnostic window for early DCAN detection and clinical monitoring.

The selective hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol is a promising route for the high-value upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules. Vanillyl alcohol is a key intermediate used in pharmaceuticals, flavors, fragrances, and fine chemicals, offering both economic and sustainability benefits. In this work, we developed a non-noble-metal NiCu bimetallic catalyst supported on N/O-doped biomass-derived carbon by modifying a conventional chitin-based preparation protocol. The improved method ensured the formation of accessible NiCu-related domains, thereby markedly enhancing hydrogenation performance. In a continuous-flow reactor, the resulting NiCu@CT catalyst achieved 99.4% conversion and 98.0% selectivity to vanillyl alcohol. Overall, this work provides an efficient and scalable strategy for the continuous, high-value conversion of vanillin.

Currently, traditional monotherapy for cancer often results in indiscriminate attacks on the body, leading to the emergence of new health problems. To confront these challenges, multimodal combination therapy has become necessary. However, how to develop new smart nanomaterials through green synthesis methods, delivering drugs while simultaneously synergizing multimodal combination therapies for tumor treatment, remains a topic of great significance. In this study, a biomimetic composite nanomaterial (RM-Cu/P) composed of mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) as the core and red blood cell membranes (RBCMs) as the shell was synthesized as a drug carrier to deliver doxorubicin (DOX) while achieving synergistic chemotherapy, photothermal and chemodynamic therapy (CT/PTT/CDT). Herein, the nanoparticles were extensively characterized to examine their morphological characteristics, elemental composition, and drug-carrying capacity. Notably, the coating of RBCM reduced the toxicity of the RM-Cu/P@DOX nanoparticles, improved their targeting ability and prolonged their circulation time in vivo . The Cu-doped nanoparticles were capable of initiating a Fenton-like reaction to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for CDT, while the photothermal conversion efficiency (η) reached 45.20 % under NIR laser irradiation. Subsequently, the particles were examined by in vivo and in vitro experimental studies in cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, ROS levels, lysosomal escape, and mouse tumor model to evaluate their potential application in antitumor. Compared with monotherapy, the RM-Cu/P@DOX nanoparticles had multiple-stimulation response properties under redox, pH, and NIR, which exhibited the advantage of combined trimodal therapy, resulting in remarkable synergistic antitumor efficacy. In conclusion, this innovative platform exhibited promising applications in smart drug delivery and synergistic treatment of cancer.
