CaCO 3 /CaO thermochemical energy storage (TCES) system has been widely studied on laboratory scale for its potential in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. However, there is still need for the large-scale experiments based on which a detailed analysis can be obtained to improve this system for real-time applications. In this study, we developed a packed bed reactor capable of operating at high temperature and pressure providing the carbonation and decarbonation reactions of CaCO 3 /CaO reaction pair. The heat storage process is studied with the aspect of different decarbonation temperatures and different sample sizes (amount of sample in grams) placed in the reactor. Furthermore, we compared the heat storage performance of pure and composite samples. The heat release process is performed by varying the concentration of CO 2 and the sample size of the loaded material. The results showed that the heat storage rate and efficiency improve by increasing the temperature of the decarbonation, implying that this reaction must be carried out above 925 °C for better performance. The heat is released smoothly and at a good rate when the concentration of CO 2 is high in the reactor. Also, carbonation reaction (heat release process) depicts that CaCO 3 /CaO TCES system has a great potential to be used as a heat pump and is capable of upgrading the temperature of the released heat from lower to higher value.

The dispersion state of fillers in the polymer matrix is an important factor to determine the properties of the polymer composites. Here, a new method for the accurate quantitative evaluation dispersion state of fillers through three-dimensional (3D) visualization and fractal analysis is reported. First of all, the data model of the dispersed state of the fillers is obtained through 3D visualization techniques. Then the fractal dimensions of different samples are obtained by software based on the fractal theory. As the filler increases, the fractal dimension is firstly decreases to a minimum and then increases. Under this extreme point condition, the theoretical dispersion state of the fillers is uniform. The accurate quantitative description of the dispersion state provides a new basis for establishing the relationship between the dispersion state and the mechanical properties of the fillers in various composites.

The hydroxylated PVC (PVC-OH) was successfully synthesized by a suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride (VC), butyl acrylate (BA) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA). Novel hydrophobic CaCO 3 was then prepared by a urethane formation reaction between methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and the OH groups both in the PVC-OH chains and on the surface of pristine CaCO 3 particles. The effect of the PVC-OH content on the grafting ratio of treated CaCO 3 particles was extensively investigated. Combining the result of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) with that of water contact angle, it can be concluded that the hydrophobicity of CaCO 3 had been efficiently improved by the PVC-OH segments grafted on the surface of CaCO 3 particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were also used to study crystalline behaviors, thermal stability and surface morphology of the modified CaCO 3 particles, respectively. The change of specific surface area implying surface modification was investigated as well.

A facile, efficient, environmentally benign route has been reported to synthesize toast-like porous carbon (TPC) materials via one-step solid reaction between LiH and CaCO 3 powder mixture at 600 °C. The release of gas from the reaction process plays a key role in the formation of toast-like micro-/meso-porous structure. As an anode material for Li ion batteries , the as-synthesized TPC exhibits ultrahigh specific capacity of 1016 mAh g −1 (after 300 cycles at 200 mA g −1 ), superior rate capability (730 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 ), and excellent cycling stability up to 1400 cycles at 4000 mA g −1 . The exceptional lithium storage performance of TPC could be attributed to its novel hierarchical structure, which not only provide high accessible surface area for charge storage, but also act as reservoirs for lithium storage. This chemical reaction route opens new avenues for synthesizing porous carbon materials for energy storage application .

The efficiency of multi-enzyme immobilization is often influenced by the carrier and immobilization techniques employed. In this work, we proposed a ternary enzyme cascade reaction system composed of β-glucosidase (β-G), glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). CaCO 3 microspheres served as a template for in situ immobilization, while poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and sodium poly (4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) were utilized to create PAH-CaCO 3 and PSS-CaCO 3 templates for layer-by-layer multi-enzyme immobilization. The effects of template structure, glutaraldehyde (GA) addition, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) concentration, and the structure of layer-by-layer assembly were systematically investigated. Our results indicated that an assembly of PSS-CaCO 3 --PAH--β-G--HRP--GOD presented simultaneous high enzyme loading and relative activity. The loadings of β-G, GOD and HRP were 75.2 ± 2.0%, 87.7 ± 4.4% and 85.5 ± 3.2%, respectively, while the relative activities were 81.8 ± 2.7%, 93.6 ± 4.7% and 90.6 ± 3.1%, respectively. Kinetic parameters confirmed that the reaction rate of the immobilized ternary enzymes in this assembly was close to that of the free enzymes. This work provides insights for constructing other multi-enzyme cascade reaction systems using immobilization techniques.

The lack of effective oral drug delivery systems to treat gastric ulcer is an urgent challenge in clinical practice. Herein, a gastric acid pH-responsive hydrogel of curcumin/sodium alginate/polyaspartic acid@CaCO3 (Cur/SA/PC) was developed for sustained release of Cur, exerting effective protection and treatment of gastric ulcers. The in vitro gelatinization properties and the corresponding gel characteristics of the SA/PC delivery system demonstrated the successful construction of the in situ hydrogel with uniform strength. The cellular uptake illustrated the successful uptake and sustained release of Cur. Besides, Cur effectively inhibited NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis both in vitro and in vivo, exhibited an excellent pro-healing effect by regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and alleviated acetic acid-induced chronic gastric injury in rats. Moreover, the relative bioavailability of Cur in the SA/PC hydrogel could effectively increase in the pharmacokinetic study. Importantly, the protective barrier formed by the SA/PC hydrogel could effectively protect against alcohol-induced acute gastric ulcers in rats. Overall, the designed SA/PC oral delivery system is a promising strategy to overcome gastric barriers for oral drug delivery.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is an important approach for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the lactic acid-induced acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) may reduce the therapeutic outcome of TACE. Herein, monodispersed gelatin microspheres loaded with calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CaNPs@Gel-MS) as novel embolic agents were prepared by a simplified microfluidic device. It was found that the particle size and homogeneity of as-prepared CaNPs@Gel-MS were strongly dependent on the flow rates of continuous and dispersed phases, and the inner diameter of syringe needle. The introduction of CaNPs provided the gelatin microspheres with an enhanced ability to encapsulate the chemotherapeutic drug of DOX, as well as a pH-responsive sustained drug release behavior. In vitro results revealed that CaNPs@Gel-MS could largely increase the cellular uptake and chemotoxicity of DOX by neutralizing the lactic acid in the culture medium. In addition, CaNPs@Gel-MS exhibited an excellent and persistent embolic efficiency in a rabbit renal model. Finally, we found that TACE treatment with DOX-loaded CaNPs@Gel-MS (DOX/CaNPs@Gel-MS) had a much stronger ability to inhibit tumor growth than the DOX-loaded gelatin microspheres without CaNPs (DOX@Gel-MS). Overall, CaNPs@Gel-MS could be a promising embolic microsphere that can significantly improve anti-HCC ability by reversing lactic acid-induced chemotherapy resistance during TACE treatment.

To expand the range of application of insulating calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), we combined CaCO 3 with narrow bandgap cadmium sulfide (CdS) with the chemical precipitation method and characterized the composite through X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activities of composite catalysts with different molar ratios on Cr 6+ are further investigated and compared. The materials showed good photocatalytic reduction effect on Cr 6+ under visible light. At the same time, the catalysts have good catalytic performance and service life, far exceeding pure CdS. The behavior of photogenerated carriers and free radicals in photocatalytic reduction processes were explored with a trapping agent experiment, and the mechanism that enhances catalytic activity in the CaCO 3 composite catalyst was revealed. Overall, results show that CaCO 3 has great potential as a photocatalyst.

Geometry and mechanical property have emerged as important parameters in designing nanocarriers, in addition to their size, surface charge, and hydrophilicity . However, inconsistent and even contradictory demands regarding the shape and stiffness of nanoparticles have been noted in blood circulation, tumor accumulation, and tumor cell internalization . Herein, CaCO 3 nanorods (NRs) with an aspect ratio of around 2.4 are assembled with hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel layers to prepare CaCO 3 @HA NRs. The rod geometry enables lower recognition by macrophages and higher extravasation into tumor tissues than the spherical counterpart. In response to the slightly acidic tumor matrix, the acid-labile removal of CaCO 3 templates achieves shape switching into spherical HA nanocapsules (NCs). The shape switchable CaCO 3 @HA NRs show significantly higher uptake and cytotoxicities to 4T1 cells than CaCO 3 [email protected] NRs with silica layers on CaCO 3 cores to inhibit shape switching. In addition, HA NCs with 2 − 8 layers of HA hydrogels exhibit stiffness from 1.85 to 12.3 N/m, and the assembly of 4 layers shows 2- to 3-fold higher cellular uptake than those of other NCs. The shape shift satisfies long-term blood circulation of NRs, and the resulting stiffness-adjustable NCs promote tissue infiltration and intracellular accommodation, resulting in a 4-fold higher drug accumulation in tumors. The CaCO 3 @HA NR treatment significantly suppresses tumor growth; prolongs animal survival; inhibits lung metastasis; and eliminates systemic toxicities to blood, liver, kidney, and heart tissues. This study achieves a comprehensive understanding of the shape and stiffness effects and demonstrates a hierarchical targeting strategy to address the multiple delivery barriers for chemotherapeutic agents. Statement of significance The different barriers involved in the drug delivery pathway have inconsistent and even contradictory demands on the shape and stiffness of nanoparticles. In the current study, in situ switching of nanorods (NRs) into spherical nanocapsules (NCs) in tumor tissues is proposed to address these dilemmas. The NR shape ensures long-term blood circulation and high tumor tissue accumulation , while the in situ switching into NCs promotes tissue infiltration and cellular internalization. NCs with different numbers of hydrogel layers also provide a robust system wherein NC stiffness is controlled as a single variable to study stiffness-dependent cellular behaviors. Thus, this straightforward design offers a comprehensive understanding of how the shape and stiffness of nanocarriers affect their biological pathways.

The synthesis of antibacterial biomaterial with specific functions responsive to specific bacterial growth environments is of significant importance to achieve effective sterilization and reduce the resistant bacteria. Herein, inspired by biomineralization, we develop a one-pot, threonine (Thr)-mediated biomineralization method using a CO2 bubbling procedure to green, simply and quickly prepare vaterite CaCO3 microspheres as a platform for antibacterial Sanguinarine (SAN) delivery. The loading capacity of vaterite CaCO3 microspheres for SAN drugs reached 159.8 mg/g, corresponding to the loading efficiency of 83.7%. And for the first time, a novel Sanguinarine@calcium carbonate (SAN@CaCO3) organic–inorganic hybrid antibacterial biofilm was constructed by using vaterite CaCO3 microspheres with pH-responsive and high SAN drug-loading. Importantly, the film showed bacteria-triggered, pH-responsive SAN release properties and strong bactericidal ability (96.19%) for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Meanwhile, it also had antibacterial capabilities in real environments. In 7 days, it can significantly inhibit the adhesion and growth of bacteria in the air. The biomineralized synthetic vaterite CaCO3 microspheres and the application in the construction of pH-responsive antibacterial biofilm have bright future in resisting bacterial infections and reducing the production of resistant bacteria.

The rapid development of treatment resistance in tumors poses a technological bottleneck in clinical oncology. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death with clinical translational potential, but the efficacy of ferroptosis-inducing agents is susceptible to many endogenous factors when administered alone, for which some cooperating mechanisms are urgently required. Here, we report an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC)–based nanoassembly for tumor-targeted ferroptosis therapy, in which the totally degradable ACC substrate could synergize with the therapeutic interaction between doxorubicin (DOX) and Fe2+. The nanoplatform was simultaneously modified by dendrimers with metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2)–sheddable PEG or targeting ligands, which offers the functional balance between circulation longevity and tumor-specific uptake. The therapeutic cargo could be released intracellularly in a self-regulated manner through acidity-triggered degradation of ACC, where DOX could amplify the ferroptosis effects of Fe2+ by producing H2O2. This nanoformulation has demonstrated potent ferroptosis efficacy and may offer clinical promise.

Lead ions (Pb(Ⅱ)) cause serious environmental pollution and endanger human health and it is urgent to carry out efficient treatment. Herein, a strategy was proposed to enhance the immobilization and removal of Pb(Ⅱ) (including trace Pb(Ⅱ)) from water by coating SiO 2 on the surface of CaCO 3 to prepare CaCO 3 @SiO 2 composites using the carbonation method. The findings revealed that SiO 2 coating exhibits strong activation effects on CaCO 3 . The SiO 2 coating (loaded at 8.62 wt%) increased CaCO 3 specific surface area by over 20-fold, confirming its activating effect. The maximum immobilization amount of Pb(Ⅱ) by CaCO 3 @SiO 2 reached 3354 mg/g (over twice that of CaCO 3 ), and the removal rate of trace Pb(Ⅱ) (100 μg/L) was 99.5 %. The residual Pb(Ⅱ) concentration (5.5 μg/L) complies with WHO drinking water standard. Furthermore, CaCO 3 @SiO 2 showed selective removal of Pb(II), maintaining an 87 % percentage removal after 5 cycles of recycling. This study quantified dual mechanisms: surface adsorption-complexation dominated at low concentrations (100 % at 10 mg/L), while dissolution-precipitation plays the primary role at high concentrations (99.39 % at 500 mg/L), the removal mechanism of CaCO 3 @SiO 2 was greatly affected by the initial concentration of Pb(Ⅱ), therefore, the accurate contribution rate of each mechanism at different concentrations was calculated. The synergistic effect of CaCO 3 , its surface coated SiO 2, and the rate of increase in the system pH value was found to be the fundamental reason for the significant increase in the immobilization of Pb(Ⅱ) by CaCO 3 @SiO 2 .
