To address the heavy metal water pollution caused by industrial wastewater discharge, a novel hydrogel adsorbent was prepared using organic matter derived from distiller's grains (DGS), a by-product of the brewing industry, as the main raw material and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as the modifier. Characterization results revealed that CMCS converted the adsorbent into a three-dimensional macroporous structure while enhancing its highly selective adsorption performance for Pb(II) and Cd(II), with adsorption capacities reaching as high as 825.3 mg·g −1 and 644.3 mg·g −1 , respectively, and removal efficiencies up to 99.4% and 95.2% within 10 min. The adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model (R 2 > 0.996) and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption was dominated by chemical adsorption. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the hydrogel formed complexation and coordination with Pb(II) and Cd(II) via the lone pair electrons of O and N atoms, and combined with hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction to achieve synergistic adsorption. Furthermore, adsorption experiments on industrial wastewater using this adsorbent demonstrated that it maintained excellent adsorption performance even after six adsorption-desorption cycles, and achieved a degradation rate of 51.3% after 28 days. The synthesis of this highly efficient adsorbent not only realizes the functional modification and high-value utilization of DGS but also provides a green solution for wastewater remediation, exhibiting great application potential.

A zero-valent iron-loaded corn straw char (ZVI-CSC) was synthesized in this study for the remediation of As(V) and Cd(II) contamination. The impact of ZVI-CSC on the adsorption performance of As(V) and Cd(II) in solution, as well as their migration properties in soil, was investigated through adsorption kinetics and soil column leaching experiments, respectively. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of As(V) by ZVI-CSC was significantly improved to 14.42 g·kg −1 at pH = 3, compared with unmodified corn straw char (CSC). However, the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) was not improved. In the leaching experiments, the addition of ZVI-CSC to As(V)-contaminated soil resulted in a significant reduction of cumulative As(V) release rate from 32.26 to 3.11%, compared with corn straw char (CSC). Moreover, the role of ZVI in As(V)/Cd(II) remediation was analyzed. nZVI forms ≡Fe-OH and ≡Fe-OOH due to oxidation, which can form monodentate and bidentate complexes with As(V) via ligand exchange, thus promoting As immobilization. Furthermore, to further improve the adsorption performance of Cd(II), the electrostatic potential (ESP) of biochars with different surface functional groups (C = O, C–O–C, –OH, and –COOH) and their bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) with As(V) and Cd(II) were calculated based on density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that –OH was the most effective for As(V) adsorption, and C–O–C was the most effective for Cd(II) adsorption. C = O and –COOH can be used to the simultaneous adsorption of As(V) and Cd(II). Therefore, the surface functional groups of ZVI-CSC can be selectively modified to improve its adsorption performance of As(V) and Cd(II). Graphical

Novel KMnO 4 -treated magnetic biochar (FMBC) was successfully synthesized by addition of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 during carbonization and KMnO 4 treatment following for Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption. SEM-EDS, XPS, and ICP-AES were used to evaluate the FMBC and magnetic biochar (FBC) on surface morphology, surface chemistry characteristics, surface functional groups, and Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption behavior. Results showed that the Langmuir maximum adsorption quantity of FMBC reached 148 mg/g for Pb(II) and 79 mg/g for Cd(II), nearly 7 times of that of FBC. The enhancement of FMBC for heavy metal adsorption was due to the successful load of manganese oxides and the increased oxygen functional groups consistent with XPS and FTIR results. The adsorption capacities of FMBC were maintained over 95% when the pH value was higher than 2.5 and 3.5 for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption performances of both heavy metals by FMBC were hardly influenced by ionic strength and humid acid. The adsorption capacities of FMBC could maintain over 50% and 87% after four cycles for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The saturation magnetization of FMBC was about 11.5 emu/g, which did not change after adsorption. This work proposed a new method to fabricate a magnetic biochar with high adsorption capacities of heavy metals Pb(II) and Cd(II).

A sensitive electrochemical sensor based on ion-imprinted chitosan–graphene (CS/rGO-IIP) nanocomposites has been developed for the determination of Cd(II). The surface morphology of CS/rGO-IIP was studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the structure was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Differential pulse anodic solution voltammetry (DPASV) was used to detect Cd(II) to evaluate the performance of the electrochemical sensor. The detection limit of the CS/rGO-IIP electrode for Cd(II) was 0.2 μg L−1, and the linear range obtained for Cd(II) was 1–160 μg L−1, which was found to be below the limits set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The developed sensor has excellent anti-interference, reproducibility and stability, and can be applied for the determination of Cd(II) in a real water environment. This work offers a viable method for ion imprinting electrochemical interface construction and electrochemical sensing.

In this work, a Sn-Bi film was successfully fabricated via the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of nano-Sn powders and nano-Bi powders in an ethanol dispersion medium. Study on film composition showed that a coefficient of proportionality between the mass ratio in the deposited film and that in the suspension was observed for the EPD of Sn-Bi, which controlled the composition of the Sn-Bi film. Therefore, Sn-Bi films with different mass ratios were designed with this linear relationship for the codetection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). Square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) measurements using an in-situ plating strategy were performed after the electrochemical oxidation of Sn and Bi at 0.3 V for 120 s, and the results indicated that the Sn-Bi film with a mass ratio of 0.75 had the best determination ability.

In this work, CdS quantum dots (QDs) were proposed as electrochemical sensing materials for ciprofloxacin (CIP) determination for the first time. The CdS QDs-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited a well-defined anodic stripping response in acidic solution, attributed to the release of Cd(II) ions from CdS QDs. The influences of supporting electrolyte and CdS QDs concentration on the response of CdS QDs-modified electrode were investigated and optimized. When CIP was added into the solution, the anodic stripping current of Cd(II) on CdS QDs/GCE decreased due to the complexation of CIP with in situ generated Cd(II) ions from CdS QDs. A linear relationship existed between the anodic stripping voltammetric response of CdS QDs/GCE and CIP concentration in the range from 1.0 × 10 −7 to 1.0 × 10 −5 mol L −1 . The detection limit (3S/N) was 2.2 × 10 −8 mol L −1 . The applicability of the CdS QDs-modified electrode for CIP determination was demonstrated in biological fluids.

In this study, graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized and employed to adsorb Cd(II) in acidic aqueous solutions. Characterization techniques, such as AFM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, Raman and Zeta potential were used to investigate the adsorbent properties. Results demonstrated that the Cd(II) removal efficiency was found to increase from 6.29% to 96.72% with the increase of adsorbent dosage from 0.02 to 2.00 g/L. The removal efficiency remained constant with further increase of the adsorbent dosage. Cd(II) adsorption was greatly enhanced with the increase of solution pH from 2.02 to 4.01. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium was attained within 120 min, and a slight decrease in solution pH was observed after the adsorption of Cd(II). The adsorption data were revealed to fit well in pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity was recorded to be about 44.64 mg/g with 0.50 g/L of adsorbent dosage. Ion-exchange, electrostatic attraction and physical adsorption were found to be involved in the adsorption mechanisms of this process. Findings from this study suggested that the synthesized adsorbent could be highly effective for Cd(II) removal from acidic water environments.

C-S-H gel is a complex cementitious system, and the properties present significant difference with various Ca/Si ratios. The immobilization mechanism of three heavy metals in C-S-H gel at various Ca/Si ratios was investigated in this work from the prospect of the physical adsorption and chemical immobilization. Results showed that higher Ca/Si ratios can result in an increase in silicon chain polymerization, and lower BET specific area, and C-S-H gel with various Ca/Si ratios showed the excellent immobilization for heavy metals. Pb(II) and Zn(II) can form hydroxyl complex polyhedra in C-S-H under strongly alkaline environments, and increase the silicon chain polymerization degree similar to the doping of C-S-H gel by Al. However, Cd(II) was immobilized in the C-S-H gel with the formation of a solid solution under the action of ion exchange with Ca(II), rather than in the form of hydroxyl complex polyhedral and cadmium hydroxide coprecipitates. The highest adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was realized in C-S-H gel with a Ca/Si molar ratio of 0.9, reaching 95.6006 mg/g. Pb(II) was mainly immobilized in C-S-H gel via physical and chemical adsorption, and the effect of chemical adsorption tended to be significant as the Ca/Si molar ratio increased. And the formation of Pb 8 Ca(Si 2 O 7 ) 3 can be detected in C-S-H gel with a higher Ca/Si molar ratio.

A two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was employed as a high-performance solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace Cd(II) from complex food matrices. Systematic investigations of adsorption kinetics and isotherms revealed that Cd(II) uptake follows a pseudo-second-order model and aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating a monolayer chemisorption process. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity reached 114.94 mg g −1 , demonstrating highly competitive performance against traditional adsorbents. Structural and spectroscopic characterizations (SEM–EDS, BET, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD) before and after adsorption confirmed that the robust performance of COF-LZU1 originates from its high specific surface area and abundant nucleophilic imine linkages (-C = N-), which serve as primary coordination sites. Supported by the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases and density functional theory simulations, the adsorption mechanism involves a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, chelation, and the channel effect. Under optimized conditions, the integrated SPE-GFAAS platform achieved a highly sensitive limit of detection (3.34 ng L −1 ) and excellent precision (RSD = 1.0%). The methodology was validated using certified reference materials and real food samples, yielding excellent recoveries (94.0–104.0%). These findings underscore the significant potential of COFs-LZU1 as specialized scaffolds for the robust enrichment and quantification of trace heavy metals in food safety applications. Graphical A novel two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was initially employed in a solid-phase extraction system to adsorb trace amounts of Cd(II) from food samples. The adsorption process is identified as a sophisticated multi-step mechanism: initially, Cd(II) ions are attracted to the vicinity of the nitrogen-rich binding sites via electrostatic forces; subsequently, they migrate into the interior pores through the channel effect and are ultimately anchored via strong coordination-chelation with the imine linkages. This study underscores the potential of COF-LZU1 as a high-performance and selective platform for the separation and detection of Cd(II) in complex food matrices.

Heavy metal pollution remains a global environmental challenge, calling for sustainable and low-cost sorbents. Here, we upcycle coir fiber into a bioinspired adsorbent by depositing a polydopamine (PDA) coating (PDA/Coir fiber) for efficient Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal from water while improving effluent safety. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) confirm successful PDA functionalization and associated structural changes. Compared with pristine coir fiber, PDA/Coir fiber shows 6.84-fold and 12.86-fold higher adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively. Adsorption is well described by the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer-dominated binding. Kinetic analysis shows that the adsorption of both ions follows the pseudo-second-order model. The fiber also exhibits good reusability over four adsorption–desorption cycles. Importantly, cytotoxicity assays of the treated solutions show substantially reduced biotoxicity after metal removal. Overall, PDA/Coir fiber offers a sustainable and low-cost platform for heavy metal removal by integrating efficient adsorption capabilities and safety implications.

Highly crystalline ETS-10 zeolite was prepared with a surface area of 250 m 2 /g and an average pore size of 1.67 nm. • Adsorption was highly pH-dependent, reaching peak efficiency at pH 5.0 for Pb(II) and pH 6.0 for both Cu(II) and Cd(II). • The Sips model best described the adsorption without being limited by concentration. • The adsorption kinetic of Pb(II) follows the PSO model, whereas the ID model controls the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II). • The removal of Pb, Cu, Cd occurred via stoichiometric Na+/K+ ion exchange within 12-membered rings and surface complexation. Understanding adsorption kinetics and mechanisms play an instrumental role to determine the speed, efficiency, and pathways by which adsorbents remove pollutants. In this study, kinetics and mechanisms of the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto ETS-10 are investigated based on the combination of experimental, theoretical models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, Pseudo-First-Order (PFO), Pseudo-Second-Order (PSO), Intraparticle diffusion (ID)), and modern analytical techniques (XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR and BET-BJH). Obtained results show that Sips models give the best fit with experimental data for three ions, while kinetic of Pb(II) adsorption follows PSO and kinetics of Cu(II) and Cd(II) uptakes follow ID models. The adsorption rates of Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II) during the diffusion process on the surface, whereas the ones of Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) in the intraparticle diffusion process. The mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion, ion-exchange and complexion play mainly roles in the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II). A low-cost mercapto-modified coal gangue (CG-SH) was fabricated by modification of coal gangue (CG) with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane. The structure and composition for as-prepared CG-SH were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Results indicated that larger amounts of mercapto-groups (-SH) was successfully introduced onto CG, which followed by acted as active sites for the removal of heavy metal cations, such as Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II). The factors that affected the adsorption equilibrium as well as the removal efficiency, i.e., contact time, initial concentration, pH and temperature, were investigated in detail. The adsorption isotherms for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were well fitted with Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of CG-SH for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were calculated to be 332.8, 110.4 and 179.2 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) on CG-SH could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model . And thermodynamic analysis suggests that the adsorption process for Pb(II) is exothermal, while that for Cd(II) and Hg(II) are endothermal. The results suggest CG-SH have great potential to be used as efficient absorbent for the removal of heavy metal cations from water.
