HATP ligand-engineered Co-MOF-74 synthesized by dielectric barrier discharge microplasma and its application in electrochemical sensing of p-benzoquinone in water samples

Wang Ying,Yan Yiting,Zhang Jun,Yang Lin,Liu Fanghua,Tan Chao,Jiang Xue

p-Benzoquinone (PBQ), as a key toxic derivative of benzene, is widely present in industrial wastewater and the production and manufacturing of daily chemicals. Long-term exposure poses a serious health threat, making the development of rapid and sensitive on-site detection technologies highly significant. Electrochemical methods, due to their simple operation, high sensitivity, and ease of miniaturization, are an ideal approach for detecting PBQ. Co-MOF-74 is extensively used in the electrochemical field because of its structural stability, tunable metal nodes, and large surface area, but its low conductivity limits further applications. In this study, Co-MOF-74 was rapidly synthesized using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microplasma technology, and then the large π-conjugated organic ligand HATP was introduced for ligand engineering to successfully prepare Co-MOF-74-HATP. This synthesis strategy is not only efficient, but also the introduction of HATP effectively regulates the material’s electronic structure, significantly enhancing its conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. The electrochemical sensor employs chronoamperometric detection at −0.15 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and exhibits excellent performance for PBQ, featuring two wide linear ranges (17–1602 µM and 1602–5602 µM) with corresponding sensitivities of 1440 µA·mM −1 ·cm −2 and 497.8 µA·mM −1 ·cm −2 , a low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.43 µM ( S / N  = 3), and good reproducibility (RSD < 3.0%). It was successfully applied to the detection of PBQ in actual water samples with recoveries ranging from 90.5% to 102.32%. This work expands the synthesis of ligand-functionalized MOFs through DBD microplasma technology and applies them to the electrochemical detection of PBQ in water samples. Graphical abstract

Self-supporting Co-MOF@chitosan membrane with in-situ reconstructed amorphous CoO(OH) nanolayer for peroxymonosulfate activation: High activity and ultra-low cobalt leaching

Kao Chen,Huailiang Li,Jingyi Chen,Annan Wang,Weiwei Zhu

Highly recoverable and stable heterogeneous catalysts are critical for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This work addresses the difficult separation and metal leaching issues of conventional powdered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by constructing a self-supporting Co-MOF@chitosan (Co-MOF@CS) composite membrane. Through in situ reconstruction during PMS activation, the low-crystallinity Co-MOF precursor transforms into an amorphous CoO(OH) nanolayer on the membrane surface. The reconstructed active phase anchors firmly on the porous CS substrate, thereby enabling efficient PMS activation by facilitating rapid electron transfer and providing abundant surface active sites. The Co-MOF@CS membrane exhibited excellent catalytic performance, degrading > 96% of the methylene blue (MB) and ∼70% of sulfadiazine (SDZ) after five consecutive cycles. Notably, the degradation efficiency increased slightly after multiple cycles due to continuous exposure of CoO(OH) active sites. The Co species effectively anchored onto the CS matrix through strong coordination, contributing to extremely low cobalt leaching (0.05 to 0.06 mg/L) and outstanding long-term reusability. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses revealed superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the dominant reactive species. This work elucidates the dynamic self-activation of low-crystallinity Co-MOFs in AOPs while providing a green and sustainable solution to secondary pollution caused by powdered nanocatalysts during water treatment.

2-Aminoterephthalic acid co-coordinated Co-MOF fluorescent probe for highly selective detection of the organophosphorus pesticides with p-nitrophenyl group in water systems

Wenbo Bai,Guoxu Qin,Jing Wang,Lei Li,Yonghong Ni

It has drawn extensive research interest to integrate luminescent ligands into metal-organic frameworks as luminescent materials due to striking luminescent properties. In this work, a Co-MOF with weak fluorescence emission , [Co(OBA)(2,2′-BPY)], was synthesized by a mixed solvothermal route with Co(NO 3 ) 2 as the Co 2+ ion source, 4,4′-Oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA) and 2,2′-Bipyridyl (2,2′-BPY) as the ligands. Its fluorescence was obviously enhanced through integrating a small amount of luminescent ligands: 2-aminoterephthalic acid. Interestingly, the above enhanced fluorescence could be selectively quenched by the organophosphorus pesticides with p-nitrophenyl group such as p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) and bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) in water systems. As a case, the detection limit towards PNPP was up to 352 nM (0.07 mg kg −1 ), which is far lower than the standards for similar pesticide residues in fruits in China (0.1–0.6 mg kg −1 ) [ 1 ]. At the same time, the above phenomenon of the fluorescence quenching was not interfered from some other pesticides, metallic ions, amino acids and aromatic nitrocompounds, implying the present fluorescent material has potential application as a highly selective probe for detecting PNPP pesticide residues in food and domestic water. Furthermore, a possible quenching mechanism was discussed.

Novel Co MOF with Ionic Liquid Comprised Portable Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Electrochemical Sensor for the Point-of-Care Detection of a Breast Cancer Biomarker

Aiqin Luo,Yanhui Cai,Miao Liu,Shanshan Tang,Ziyu Zhu,Ruilin Haotian,Bingteng Xie,Yue Yi,Zikai Hao,Axin Liang

A cobalt metal-organic framework (Co MOF)-ionic liquid (IL) nanocomposite comprising the base matrix of the electrode was developed with electropolymerized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) consisting of o-phenylenediamine (oPD) to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a biomarker of breast cancer. Firstly, Co MOF was synthesized using hydrothermal synthesis, which was used as an electrically conductive skeleton and functionalized with an IL. Then, CEA was employed as a template in the electropolymerization of oPD-imprinted films on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). Finally, the template protein was removed to form a molecularly imprinted film capable of qualitatively and quantitatively signaling CEA. Under optimized conditions, the sensor for CEA exhibits a wide detection range of 1.0 × 10−4−10 ng·ml−1 (0.32 V vs Ag/AgCl) with a limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.024 pg·ml−1 and 0.082 pg·ml−1, respectively. Besides, other parameters including the selectivity, reproducibility (RSD 2.2%), and recovery rate (92.16%–103.35%) are all satisfactory. The proposed strategy provides a new route for the development of rapid breast cancer diagnostic tools.

Rational design of anti-interference Fe/Co MOF-coupled PMS process for As(III) removal in DOM-rich groundwater: 1O2-dominated As(III) oxidation and chemisorption of As(V)

Ying Fang,Qianwen Liu,Yang Song,Feiyue Jia,Ying Yang,Haipu Li

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) extensively exists in high-arsenic groundwater with relatively high concentration, which could not only compete with arsenic for adsorption sites, but also depress As(III) oxidation in persulfate-based advanced processes (PS-AOPs) through scavenging free radicals (SO 4 • − and •OH). In order to effectively avoid the negative effect of DOM , an Fe/Co bimetallic metal–organic framework (Fe/Co MOF)-coupled peroxymonosulfate (Fe/Co MOF-PMS) system was rationally constructed for non-radical-dominated As(III) oxidation and chemisorption-driven As(V) adsorption. Results showed that the Fe/Co MOF-PMS system did realize anti-interference As(III) immobilization in DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater, which was evidenced by no difference in As(III) immobilization efficiencies in the absence and presence of 20 mg/L humic acid (HA). During the oxidation process, 1 O 2 dominated As(III) oxidation while O 2 • − dominated HA oxidation, and the presence of HA significantly promoted the generation of 1 O 2 besides SO 4 • − and •OH. During the adsorption process, chemical adsorption mainly drove As(V) adsorption such as forming M-O-As (M = Fe, Co) bond, while physical adsorption forces played a major role in HA adsorption, such as π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction. The synergism of oxidation and adsorption processes made the anti-interference As(III) immobilization in DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater in Fe/Co MOF-PMS system come true. This work is believed to shed light on the highly efficient purification of DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater.
