Prussian blue analogue assisted construction of hierarchical CoS2@(Fe,Ni)S2 heterostructures for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Chenyu Song,Jishuang Yang,Chinnadurai Ayappan,Shree Kesavan Kannan,Haitang Yang,Ruimin Xing,Hongxun Yang,Shanhu Liu

The large-scale application of water electrolysis technology is limited by the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that cause vast energy loss. Rational design and construction of hierarchical heterostructures are helpful for developing efficient OER electrocatalysts due to their interesting morphological features and electrochemical properties. Herein, we prepared hierarchical CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 heterostructures on carbon fiber paper (CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 /CFP) with particle-on-wire morphology using prussian blue analogue as template and precursor. The unique hierarchical heterostructure maximizes accessible active sites and the synergistic effect between different components significantly improves electrocatalytic activity. Impressively, CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 /CFP electrocatalyst requires a small overpotential of 237 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm −2 with a low Tafel slope of 54 mV dec −1 and the corresponding voltage has no obvious change after 60 h stability test under a constant current density of 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient and stable non-noble metal-based OER electrocatalysts.

Dual Electronic and Structural Engineering of Fe-CoS2/Laser-Induced Graphene Integrated Electrodes for Oxygen and Hydrogen Evolution

Feng Liu,Yanping Song,Pengzhan Yang,Lei Xiong,Xu Yang,Xiang Zhang,Shuai Han,Cui Liu,Nian Li

Rational design of high-performance, non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is crucial yet challenging. Herein, a synergistic dual-optimization strategy is proposed, which simultaneously enhances the intrinsic activity at the material level and the mass/charge transfer at the electrode level. Specifically, Fe-doped CoS 2 nanoparticles are in-situ anchored onto a three-dimensional porous laser-induced graphene (LIG) framework, constructing an integrated, binder-free Fe-CoS 2 /LIG electrode. Experimental and spectroscopic characterizations reveal that Fe doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of CoS 2 , inducing lattice contraction and enriching high-valence Co 3+ species, thereby optimizing the adsorption energetics of reaction intermediates. Concurrently, the 3D interconnected LIG substrate serves as a highly conductive and hierarchical gas transport network, which not only prevents the restacking of catalysts but also ensures rapid electrolyte infiltration and efficient bubble detachment. Benefiting from this synergistic design, the Fe-CoS 2 /LIG electrode demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance for both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions individually in 1 M KOH. Remarkably, it achieves low overpotentials of 300 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction and 86 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction at 10 mA cm -2 , along with rapid reaction kinetics (Tafel slopes of 86 and 94 mV dec -1 , respectively) and robust long-term stability (≥36 h). This work underscores the effectiveness of coupled electronic and structural engineering for designing high-performance, non-precious electrocatalysts.

Tuning the electron status of urchin-like CoS2 nanowires by selenium doping toward highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Yuqiao Wang,Chuanyong Jian,Wenting Hong,Qian Cai,Wei Liu

Cobalt disulfide (CoS 2 ) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) suffers from unfavorable hydrogen adsorption properties due to the strong interaction between the adsorbed H and the intensely electropositive cobalt atom. Herein, we successfully demonstrate a general strategy to improve the hydrogen evolution activity of CoS 2 by modulating the surface electron density. The selenium doped CoS 2 (Se-CoS 2 ) nanowires arrays exhibit a durable activity for electrochemical hydrogen evolution in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution to deliver 10 mA cm −2 at the overpotential of only 139 mV. Our density functional theory studies consistently confirm that the surface electron density of CoS 2 has been effectively manipulated by Se doping. The adsorbed hydrogen binding energy to Se-CoS 2 can be optimized to provide an optimal condition for electron and proton transferring to the adsorbed H 2 , thereby promoting HER activity of CoS 2 .

Bimetallic MOF-Derived CoS2/CuCo2S4 Particles Anchoring on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Framework as Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Wang Liang,Jiang Shiqi,Li Xiaoyue,Huang Jiajie,Li Yaxuan,Gao Jingyi,Wang Yuting,Yang Yefeng

Cobalt disulfide (CoS 2 ) has attracted much attention as anodes of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the serious volume variation and polysulfide dissolution issues during cycling usually lead to poor electrochemical performance, greatly limiting its application. Here, by employing a CuCo-based metal organic framework (MOF) and bacterial cellulose (BC) as precursor and template, we have fabricated heterostructured CoS 2 /CuCo 2 S 4 particles anchoring on an N-doped carbon framework (denoted as CuCo-S/NC) through ion adsorption and exchange reaction with a subsequent thermal annealing process. The generation of a CoS 2 /CuCo 2 S 4 heterostructure which can boost the charge transfer rate in the hybrid composite has been investigated, while the introduction of an N-doped carbon framework derived from the BC could not only enhance the electrical conductivity but also improve the structural integrity by mitigating the mechanical stress and inhibiting the aggregation of active materials. Benefitting from the designed composition and structure, the optimal CuCo-S/NC electrode exhibits a high capacity of 889 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and an outstanding rate capability of 394 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 . The results achieved in this work indicate the great potential of this bimetallic MOF-derived template method for the rational design and fabrication of novel hybrid composite anodes for high-performance SIBs.

Three-dimensional porous N-doped graphite carbon with embedded CoS2 nanoparticles as advanced anode for sodium-ion batteries

Yayun Zheng,Lang He,Xirui Kong,Yi Song,Yan Zhao

To achieve both high capacity and long cycling stability in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the structural optimizations of anode materials should take into considerations of the reaction kinetics, the insertion/extraction processes of Na+, and the structural stability of anodes. In this study, the growth of CoS 2 nanoparticles on N-doped graphite carbon three-dimensional nano-skeleton (CoS 2 /NGC) is designed to increase the active sites for sodium storage, to provide high ionic/electrical conductivity, and to alleviate the volume swelling and reduce Na+ diffusion energy barrier. As employed as anode materials of SIB, CoS 2 /NGC shows a great rate capability, affording an initial capacity of 660 mAh g −1 , and maintaining a coulombic efficiency of 99.7% even after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrate that the main contribution of the capacity is from the capacitive charge-storage. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the advantageous Na + storage kinetics of the CoS 2 /NGC electrode is attributed to its low Na + adsorption energy of −2.21 eV and low Na + diffusion barrier of 0.113 eV. This systematic study paves a way for the efficient design of metal sulfides anodes for SIB, which is conducive to develop battery systems with remarkable electrochemical performance.

Self-templated transformation of Co-ZIF-L into hierarchical porous CoS2/Co-Ni LDHs with improved electrochemical activities

Yuming Xie,Jingqiu Li,Mengjue Cao,Yi Feng,Jianfeng Yao

CoS 2 /Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a rational tailored pore structure are developed by partial sulfurization of Co-ZIF-L and subsequent Ni 2+ etching for the transformation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to layered double hydroxides . The as-synthesized CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs maintain the leaf-like structure and have rich hierarchical pores. More importantly, CoS 2 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded among Co-Ni LDH layers, facilitating mass diffusion and favorably exposing more active sites. Benefiting from these desirable compositional and structural features, a remarkable specific capacitance (capacity) of 1784 F/g (223 mAh/g) at 1 A/g is delivered by CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs. Furthermore, the as-assembled CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDH//activated carbon as the asymmetric supercapacitor device also exhibits a high energy density of 125 Wh/kg at a power density of 800 W/kg and a superb capacitance retention of 98 % after 5000 cycles, outperforming many Co-Ni LDH based electrode materials reported in the literature.

Defect-rich MoS2/CoS2 on Mo2TiC2Tx MXene as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media

Chou-Kun Tang,Xi Zheng,Xiao-Liang Chen,Yu-Gang Fu,Qiu-Feng Lü

Electrocatalytic hydrogen production is an effective way to produce hydrogen energy, and the key is to find inexpensive and effective catalysts. Loading transition metal sulfides onto two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene) is an effective method to prepare cheap and high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. In this study, Mo 2 TiAlC 2 was etched with hydrofluoric acid to prepare Mo 2 TiC 2 T x MXene, which was then composited with MoS 2 and CoS 2 to prepare defect-rich MoS 2 /CoS 2 @Mo 2 TiC 2 T x composite by a hydrothermal method. MoS 2 /CoS 2 provides a large number of active sites for electrocatalysis, while Mo 2 TiC 2 T x MXene as a carrier not only provides nucleation and growth sites for MoS 2 /CoS 2 , but also increases the rate of electron transfer in HER process, which achieves good synergy between MoS 2 /CoS 2 and Mo 2 TiC 2 T x MXene. Consequently, MoS 2 /CoS 2 -2@Mo 2 TiC 2 T x exhibits an excellent HER performance. When the current density reaches 10 mA cm −2 , the optimal MoS 2 /CoS 2 -2@Mo 2 TiC 2 T x catalyst only requires an overpotential of 80 mV, and exhibits good cycling stability and durability. This work gives a new idea for the preparation of efficient HER catalysts using non-precious metal composites to replace the precious Pt/C.

Synergistic Coupling of CoS2/MoS2 with Polypyrrole as a Highly Efficient and Robust Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Jianjun Zhu,Xinyu Zheng,Yikai Lu,Huamei Tong,Mengyue Qi,Yu Liu,Di Li,Deli Jiang

The construction of multicomponent coupled interfaces is crucial to designing highly effective and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting. Transition metal sulfides are widely applied as efficient catalysts, but building strong coupling interfaces to enhance electrocatalytic properties remains a tremendous challenge. Here, we reported a distinctive heterostructure electrocatalyst consisting of conductive polypyrrole (PPy)-decorated cobalt–molybdenum sulfide (CoS2/MoS2) nanosheets supported on nickel foam (CoS2/MoS2@PPy/NF) using a simple two-step hydrothermal and subsequent electrodeposition approach. Experimental results reveal that the interfacial coupling and synergistic effect between the conductive PPy and CoS2/MoS2 with tunable electronic configuration are favorable for the charge transport and the electronic structure optimization of the coupled interface, where this integrated PPy can improve the conductivity and offer a guarantee for the durability of CoS2/MoS2@PPy/NF. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that electronic interaction and charge redistribution in heterogeneous CoS2/MoS2 can flexibly adjust the interfacial electronic configuration and lower the d-band center. Thanks to the advantages mentioned above, the obtained CoS2/MoS2@PPy/NF exhibits outstanding catalytic properties with the overpotentials of 46 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 231 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm–2. Remarkably, assembled CoS2/MoS2@PPy/NF || CoS2/MoS2@PPy/NF only acquires 1.52 V at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH with a durability of 50 h. This study affords a significant reference for designing bimetallic sulfide/polymer catalysts toward high-efficiency overall water splitting.

Soft-template-assisted synthesis of N-doping layered CoS2 nanoparticles as an advanced anode for sodium-ion batteries

Han Danyang,Yu Guo,Liu An,Li Gangyong,Wang Wei,He Binhong,Hou Zhaohui,Yin Hong

As a promising anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), cobalt sulfide (CoS 2 ) has attracted extensive attention due to its high theoretical capacity, easy preparation, and superior electrochemical activity. However, its intrinsic low conductivity and large volume expansion result in poor cycling ability. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CoS 2 nanoparticles (N–C@CoS 2 ) were prepared by a C 3 N 4 soft-template-assisted method. Carbon coating improves the conductivity and prevents the aggregation of CoS 2 nanoparticles. In addition, the C 3 N 4 template provides a porous graphene-like structure as a conductive framework, affording a fast and constant transport path for electrons and void space for buffering the volume change of CoS 2 nanoparticles. Benefitting from the superiorities, the Na-storage properties of the N–C@CoS 2 electrode are remarkably boosted. The advanced anode delivers a long-term capacity of 376.27 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 500 cycles. This method can also apply to preparing other metal sulfide materials for SIBs and provides the relevant experimental basis for the further development of energy storage materials.

In situ carbon-encapsulated CoS2/Zn0.76Co0.24S composite derived from intercalated CoZn-layered double hydroxide precursor for overall water splitting

Li Ya-Ru,Jin Tao,Pan Kun-Ming,Xu Liu-Jie,Li Hao-Jie,Pan Sai-Fei,Ren Yong-Peng,Wei Shi-Zhong

The exploration of highly active and stable bifunctional catalysts based on structural adjustment and charge redistribution is imperative toward overall water splitting. The graphitized carbon encapsulation and the introduction of zinc atoms could enhance conductivity and optimize the electronic structure of catalysts, thereby improving the activities of the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). Herein, a carbon-encapsulated CoS 2 and Zn 0.76 Co 0.24 S composite with porous structure (CoS 2 /Zn 0.76 Co 0.24 S@C) is constructed for overall water splitting by sulphurating a precursor of metanilic guest-intercalated Co Zn-layered double hydroxide (CoZn-LDH) host. Consequently, CoS 2 /Zn 0.76 Co 0.24 S@C reveals lower overpotentials of 260 and 152 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, outperforming those of CoS 2 , CoS 2 @C and CoS 2 /ZnS. For overall water splitting, a CoS 2 /Zn 0.76 Co 0.24 S@C-based electrolysis cell exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.66 V at 10 mA·cm −2 with a retention of 81% after 40 h, indicating satisfactory stability. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the encapsulated carbon layer could tune the d-band center of CoS 2 and Zn 0.76 Co 0.24 S. The cooperation of cobalt sulfide with zinc atoms could reduce the work function and promote electronic redistribution, thus enhancing conductivity and boosting the OER/HER kinetics of the catalyst. This work provides an effective strategy for obtaining high conductivity, acceptable activity, strong stability and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Strategic engineering of CoS2/ZnIn2S4 heterostructures incorporating Ar plasma-induced sulfur vacancies for potentiating electrocatalytic activity in furazolidone determination

Yue Cao,Longfei Lai,Qingyuan Bao,Yiru Sheng,Peng Ye,Zhaogang Teng,Yang Zhou

In recent years, the overuse and improper disposal of antibiotics have led to their widespread presence in various environmental matrices and biological fluids. Exploring non-noble metal sulfides as electrocatalysts for reliable antibiotic detection holds substantial value but is limited by their inherent low electrochemical activity. Herein, CoS2 nanoparticles were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and used for the in situ assembly of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. Then, plasma technology was employed for efficient and rapid generation of sulfur vacancies. Detailed studies illustrated the formation of heterojunctions, facilitating electron transfer from the thin, large-area ZnIn2S4 to CoS2, which acts as a co-catalyst due to its inherent conductivity and metallicity. The plasma-assisted generation of vacancies resulted in the formation of numerous exposed metal catalytic centers. Also, both the heterojunction and vacancy construction afforded a narrowed energy gap, an upregulated conduction band, and an enhanced carrier density, favoring electron injection during the electro-reduction process. Thus, an electrochemical platform was established using this material as an electrode substrate for furazolidone (Fz) detection, achieving a detection limit of 1.2 nM. The constructed platform was finally applied to evaluate Fz in actual samples of river water and urine, thanks to its good selectivity, high stability, and acceptable repeatability. In addition, in situ Fourier transform infrared technology was also used to monitor the electrocatalytic process. This work paves the way for preparing low-cost non-precious metal sulfides, which can be used as promising candidates for electrocatalysts in antibiotic testing.

Interface engineering of MoS2/CoS2 heterojunction encapsulated in carbon matrix as high-energy durable anode for lithium-ion batteries

Shaochen Wang,Liwei Liu,Zhen Shang,Guoyong Huang,Shengming Xu

Graphite anodes are limited by low capacity and instability. Conversion-type transition metal sulfides (TMSs) offer high energy density, yet single-component TMSs suffer from rapid capacity decay thanks to volume changes, hindering practical implementation. This study explored a high-specific energy anode material MoS 2 /CoS 2 @C. The composite was based on two-dimensional layered 2H-MoS 2 nanosheets, featuring uniformly distributed CoS 2 nanoparticles on the surface. Finally, the carbon material was encapsulated onto the sulfide surface. A heterojunction is formed at the interface between CoS 2 and MoS 2 , which modulated the surface electronic structure, inhibited aggregation, and facilitated the formation of high-quality TMSs nanocrystals. Additionally, the carbon serves as a confining layer for the TMSs, enabling enhanced cycling stability. The material exhibits a remarkable specific capacity exceeding 730 mAh·g −1 after 380 cycles at a rate of 0.5C in coin-type half-cells. Furthermore, when utilized in pouch cells with a lithium metal anode, it retains a capacity of 436.5 mAh·g −1 following 100 cycles. Theoretical calculations reveal optimized electronic arrangement at the heterojunction interface, where the constructed built-in electric field facilitates lithium-ion transport. The lithium-ion migration energy barrier is reduced from 0.78 eV to 0.34 eV, thereby significantly accelerating reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the lithium metal pouch cells demonstrate no thermal runaway behavior even after undergoing abuse tests such as extrusion, overcharging, and short-circuiting. These results highlight the potential of MoS 2 /CoS 2 @C as a promising anode material for advanced lithium-ion battery systems, offering excellent energy storage capacity, prolonged cycling stability, and improved operational safety.
