A novel catalyst by preparing silica supported ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) platinum complex was developed. The preparation conditions, such as heating temperature and solvent types, were optimized. The catalyst was phosphine-free and sulfur-free which was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Its catalytic activity was evaluated by catalyzing solventless hydrosilylation reactions. In the hydrosilylation reaction between 1-hexene and methyldicholosilane, the new catalyst showed a higher catalytic activity than that provided by Spiere’s catalyst. Moreover, the new catalyst could be reused for 12 times without obvious loss of catalytic activity. To confirm its practical feasibility, catalyzing the hydrosilylation reaction between 1-octene and methyldichlorosilane was performed. Our results indicated that the new catalyst can efficiently catalyze the hydrosilylation reaction.

Removal of chelated metal ions from water remains a challenge in the treatment of industrial waste water since the chelating complexes are extremely stable, which means that precipitation is difficult. We report the elegant cooperativity of electrostatic interaction, coordinating interaction, and hydrophobic effects, which allows facile flocculation of Cu–EDTA through the stepwise addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). The electrostatic interactions are important in ‘initiating’ the coordination between PEI and Cu–EDTA, and the hydrophobic interaction between SDS and PEI allows cross-linking of the PEI/Cu–EDTA complex to generate a precipitate. With this facile protocol, 97% of the Cu–EDTA complex in the waste water can be removed, and the residual level of Cu–EDTA can be lowered to below 2 mg L−1. Such cooperativity of noncovalent interactions is of great potential interest in the removal of chelated metal complexes from industrial water.

The effective and economical removal of heavy metal-organic complexes remain an urgent challenge in the field of industrial wastewater treatment. In this study, Ca-doped ferrihydrite composites and Ca/Al co-doped ferrihydrite composites were synthesized via a simple one-step co-precipitation method and applied for the oxidative removal of EDTA-Cu in a hypochlorite system. The incorporation of Al significantly enhanced the material's stability. The Fe-Ca-Al composite exhibited a catalytic degradation efficiency of 97 % after 4 reaction cycles, representing a 32 % improvement compared to the Ca-doped ferrihydrite (Fe-Ca). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Fe-Ca-Al composite demonstrated strong selective adsorption of the organic moieties in EDTA-Cu over a broad pH range. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies (Ov) induced by Ca and Al co-doping played a crucial role in the enhanced catalytic performance and efficient removal of EDTA-Cu. These abundant Ov promoted electron transfer and provided numerous surface adsorption sites, facilitating the conversion of O 2 · - to 1 O 2 . Given that 1 O 2 can rapidly degrade organic compounds containing amino and carboxyl groups, it shows excellent potential for the treatment of EDTA-Cu. This study presents a highly active and reusable catalyst based on a Ca-Al doping strategy, offering a promising approach for the removal of organic-heavy metal complexes.

The slow Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle during the Fenton reaction process strongly impedes oxidation efficiency in practical applications. In this study, an activated carbon (AC) assisted Fenton reaction system was used to treat electroplating wastewater containing Ni-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Ni-EDTA). AC was found to enhance the removal of Ni-EDTA in Fenton/Fenton-like reactions. The reported results revealed that AC could effectively promote the regeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III) species via electron transfer to improve the reaction rather than directly enhancing the H 2 O 2 decomposition to accelerate the production of hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Quenching experiments and EPR also demonstrated that •OH and •O 2 − took part in the radical oxidation process, in which the contribution of •OH was dominant. XPS and FT-IR analysis further confirmed that the carbonyl group (C O) on the surface of AC could indeed act as the dominant active site and an electron donor to directly reduce Fe(III). In addition, electrochemical tests indicated that AC could increase the oxidation potential of Fe(III) to boost the reaction between Fe(III) and H 2 O 2 , thus enabling the transfer of electrons from H 2 O 2 to Fe(III) to facilitate the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle. This study might contribute to a new insight into the mechanisms of AC-catalyzed Fenton oxidation processes for the decomplexation heavy metal-EDTA.

Background Copper is a vital trace element that plays a crucial role in various physiological processes due to its ability to exist in multiple oxidation states. Inspired by natural enzymes, researchers have developed copper-based nanozymes that mimic enzyme functions, offering cost-effective and stable alternatives to traditional enzymes. Despite their promising properties, the design and synthesis of these nanozymes can be complex and challenging. To address this issue, this work explores an intuitive approach to construct “soft” nanozymes simply by binding Cu 2+ with its aptamers to form Cu(II)-aptamer complexes. Results Using a screening strategy, we identified a specific aptamer against Cu 2+ , designated P8, that significantly enhanced peroxidase-like activity when complexed with Cu 2+ , demonstrated by a notably smaller K m value. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of various lengths of a “molecular clamp” on the conformational dynamics of the P8 aptamer, which perturbs the encapsulation of Cu 2+ and modulated its peroxidase activity. Our findings indicate that optimizing the molecular clamp to a moderate length ( N d = 20) can further enhance the peroxidase activity of the Cu 2+ -P8 complex. The peroxidase-like soft nanozymes based on copper(II)-aptamer complexes were finally utilized for label-free detection of EDTA. The developed colorimetric sensing method exhibits outstanding detection capabilities for EDTA in Sprite and mineral water samples, achieving an extended dynamic range that accommodates higher concentrations through the incorporation of molecular clamps. Significance and novelty This work highlights a novel and straightforward approach to generate and improve the enzymatic properties of copper-based nanozymes. The strategy to regulate the enzymatic activity effectively addresses the limitations of narrow detection ranges commonly observed in traditional methods.

The remarkable stability and detrimental environmental impacts of nickel(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Ni(II)-EDTA) complexes originated from electroplating effluents have sparked a growing curiosity about their efficient remediation. In this study, L -cysteine functionalized zero-valent iron (C-ZVI bm ) was synthesized via a ball-milling method and employed as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst to decomplex Ni(II)-EDTA and immobilize Ni(II) from wastewater. The results demonstrated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic rate constant (2.096 L·mol −1 ·min −1 ) for EDTA degradation in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system was 123.3 times that in the ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system (0.017 L·mol −1 ·min −1 ). The incorporation of L -cysteine onto the surface of ZVI significantly enhanced the H 2 O 2 activation, reactive oxygen species ( OH, O 2 − , and 1 O 2 ) generation, and the sequential Ni(II)-EDTA decomplexation and EDTA degradation. The results of capture experiments revealed that 1 O 2 played a crucial role in the degradation of EDTA in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system. The optimization of the experimental variables indicated that the degradation of EDTA and the reduction/adsorption of Ni(II) were antagonistic in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system, resulting in an efficient reduction/immobilization of Ni(II) and an inhibition of EDTA degradation at a higher dosage of C-ZVI bm . Our findings provide new insights into the promising heterogeneous Fenton-like process that enables the decomplexation of Ni(II)-EDTA, the degradation of EDTA, and the synchronous immobilization of Ni(II).

Recently, EDTA-chelated Cd II (Cd II -EDTA) was effectively removed by sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI). However, few studies have been performed to investigate the influence of co-existing ions and emerging contaminants (such as microplastics) on the performance of S-nZVI toward Cd II -EDTA, which is vital for the application of S-nZVI in practical wastewater treatment. In this study, the individual effects of different co-existing ions (NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ ) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics with different concentrations on the removal of Cd II -EDTA by S-nZVI were systematically investigated. The removal capacity of S-nZVI toward Cd II -EDTA fell in the range of 579.3–644.7, 612.3–670.2, 607.4–691.3, 533.3–623.6, 79.9–545.3, 544.3–631.7, and 568.6–663.8 mg/g for the presence of NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and PS microplastics over the concentration range of 10.0–150.0 mg/L, respectively, which were all smaller than that of the system of Cd II -EDTA alone (746.6 mg/g), indicating that all of the investigated co-existing substances showed inhibitory effects on Cd II -EDTA removal. As for NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , or Mg 2+ -containing system, the inhibitory effect was ascribed to the influence of S-nZVI corrosion rate; As for PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , or PS microplastics-containing system, the negative effect was caused by changing the corrosion of S-nZVI and occupying the reactive sites at the surface of S-nZVI. The final corrosion products of S-nZVI under different reaction conditions were strongly dependent on the species and concentration of co-existing substance with the combinations of γ-FeOOH, α-Fe 2 O 3 , FeO, or β-FeOOH as the dominant corrosion products.

Stable, treatment-resistant Cu complexes in practical wastewater are frequently neglected. Positively charged lysozyme amyloid fibrils (AF), however, exhibit unexplored potential for their adsorption. This study engineered an amyloid fibril-chitosan composite (AF-CS) xerogel and evaluated its adsorption performance in three systems: free Cu 2+ , Cu-Citrate binary, and Cu-EDTA binary. The characterization confirmed successful synthesis of AF-CS, revealing a porous and amine-rich structure with a more positive surface charge than that of pure AF xerogel. Systematic evaluation demonstrated adsorption capacities of 65.37 mg/g (free Cu 2+ ), 166.14 mg/g (Cu-Citrate), and 40.31 mg/g (Cu-EDTA). MINTEQ 3.0 speciation analysis identified anionic Cu-ligand complexes as dominant species in binary systems. Further investigation revealed synergistic adsorption mechanisms in the Cu-Citrate system: electrostatic attraction coupled with decomplexation-complexation pathways liberated citrate ligands, enabling electrostatic shielding and adsorption bridging that enhanced Cu coordination. Conversely, the high stability of Cu-EDTA chelates limited adsorption primarily to mechanisms involving electrostatic attraction, resulting in suboptimal performance. These findings advance the theoretical understanding of AF-CS interactions with diverse Cu species, demonstrating AF-CS as a promising material for Cu recovery from complex wastewater and providing guidance for designing novel remediation materials.

In this study, a novel bamboo activated carbon (BAC) with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionality was prepared by direct grafting in the presence of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a crosslinking agent. The BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was characterized by SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, XPS and its adsorption property for removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) under various experimental conditions was also investigated. The characterization results reflected that EDTA was successfully assembled on the surface of the BAC and average pore size increased from 4.10 to 4.83 nm as BAC grafted with EDTA. Adsorption data fitted very well in Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As compared with the raw BAC, the maximum adsorption capacities of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA for the Pb(II) and Cu(II) increased from 45.45 to 123.45 mg g −1 and from 6.85 to 42.19 mg g −1 , since the existence of EDTA on modified BAC promoted the formation of chemical complex. The removal of heavy metal ions mainly depended on the complexation with EDTA and the electrostatic attractions with negatively charged surface of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA. The adsorption of Pb(II)/Cu(II) on the BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was pH dependent and pH 5–6 was considered an optimum. However, lower temperature favored the adsorption and the maximum adsorption was recorded at 20 °C. In addition, BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA had an excellent reusability with about 40% decline in the adsorption capacity for Pb(II) after fifth reuse. Insignificant influences of co-existing cations and natural organic matter (NOM) were found on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II). All the results demonstrate that BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA is a potential adsorbent for metal ions in wastewater.

The highly efficient adsorbents with fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity and selectivity as well as good reusability were successfully synthesized through fabricating 3D spherical-chain porous silica material and grafting modification with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for the selective removal Cu(II) from wastewater. The obtained adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, N 2 adsorption–desorption and back titration. The results indicate that the 3D framework structure is adjustable in a certain range by varying the parameters of the synthesis system. And the adsorption performance of the materials was investigated under different conditions such as pH, contact time and initial metal ions concentration. Under the experiment conditions, the synthesized adsorbent is efficient in removing Cu(II) and the adsorption equilibrium could be achieved within only 5 min, and the kinetic data are well fitted by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The prepared adsorbents display good selective adsorption of Cu(II) and can be feasibly regenerated without evident decrease even after five recycles. Basing on the obtained results, the plausible adsorption mechanism was proposed and analyzed.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) membranes have demonstrated exceptional adaptability and promising potential for precision ion-selective separation in aqueous solutions due to the fact that their pore size and charge intensity can be tailored through coordinated structural modulation. Chelation-assisted membrane separation technologies represent a highly effective strategy for separating and recovering similar divalent transition-metal ions (e.g., Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ). In this approach, conventional chelating agents, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), selectively bind to specific divalent metal (M 2+ ) ionic species in aqueous mixtures, forming negatively charged M–(EDTA) 2− complexes. By regulating the COFs membranes with appropriate pore size and intrapore charge density, the significant physicochemical differences between the M 2+ ions and the M–(EDTA) 2– complexes formed through the selective chelation can be leveraged to achieve their efficient separation. This enables the effective separation of Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ions via membrane-based techniques. In this study, a two-step solvothermal–casting approach was employed to synthesize highly crystalline COF membranes with tunable content of the intrapore sulfonic acid (–SO 3 H) group. By modulating the –SO 3 H group content, the issue associated with the inherent trade-off between the M 2+ permeation flux and the M–(EDTA) 2− complex ion rejection efficiency could be overcome, and an optimal membrane separation performance was obtained. The synthesized membranes can selectively separate Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ in both binary and ternary systems through an EDTA-chelation-assisted dialysis process, which is remarkably stable under operational conditions. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrate superior M 2+ permeability compared with commercial cation-exchange membranes in EDTA-chelation-assisted electrodialysis. These findings provide valuable insights into the design of membrane structures for the effective separation and recovery of similar divalent transition metal ions (e.g., Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ ) in aqueous solutions.

Attapulgite (ATP) has a unique porous layered chain structure and is an excellent environment-friendly decolorizer. However, its high viscosity makes it difficult to separate. First, it was combined with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to obtain Fe 3 O 4 -ATP that is easy to recycle and reuse. Then, Fe 3 O 4 -ATP nanoparticles were embedded in chitosan (CS) gel beads, and glutaraldehyde was used for cross-linking and curing. Lastly, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was successfully connected to Fe 3 O 4 -ATP/CS gel beads through amidation reaction, which further increased the capability of the adsorbent to adsorb heavy metal ions. The prepared magnetic composite adsorbent is a sphere with a rough surface and porous structure. The maximum adsorption capacity of the prepared Fe 3 O 4 -ATP/EDTA/CS adsorbent for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) is 368.32, 267.94, and 220.31 mg g −1 , respectively. After 5 times of repeated use, Fe 3 O 4 -ATP/EDTA/CS still showed good adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II). Fe 3 O 4 -ATP/EDTA/CS has a large adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions, a wide pH applicability, good reuse, and rapid magnetic separation. In addition, Cu(II) loaded Fe 3 O 4 -ATP/EDTA/CS also showed good catalytic degradation performance for bisphenol A. This study prepared a new type of adsorbent with good adsorption performance and provided a promising method for the treatment of wastewater.
