Pathogenic plant oomycetes cause devastating damage to fruits and vegetables worldwide. Plant essential oils (EOs) are known to be promising candidates for the development of fungicides. In this study, we isolated twelve EOs fromTetradium ruticarpum,Tetradium daniellii,Tetradium fraxinifolium,Zanthoxylum armatum,Ruta graveolens, andCitrus medicaleaves and fruits. We then investigated their chemical composition and antifungal activity against phytopathogenic oomycetes. Our results demonstrated thatZ. armatumfruit essential oil (ZFO) in particular substantially inhibited the mycelial growth ofPhytophthora capsici. Similarly, ZFO also strongly suppressed spore production and germination ofP. capsici, and the application of ZFO significantly reduced disease symptoms caused byP. capsiciin pepper. Furthermore, results from microscopic and biochemical studies indicated that ZFO damaged the ultrastructure and destroyed the membrane integrity ofP. capsici, leading to the leakage of the cellular contents and ultimately causing cell death. It was concluded that ZFO could enhance the activities of defense-related enzymes in pepper fruits, which may also be responsible for the inhibition of phytophthora disease. Moreover, linalool andD-limonene were proven to be the primary effective components of ZFO. Our results collectively indicate that ZFO could be a potential candidate for the management of disease caused byP. capsici. Keywords:Phytophthora capsici;antifungal activity;Zanthoxylum armatumfruit essential oil;action mechanism

In this study, a paper-based sensor, combined with a visual distance-readout method, was developed to determine glucose in fruit samples based on the glucose oxidase-mediated sodium alginate gelation. The type of filter paper, the concentration of sodium alginate and the enzymatic reaction conditions were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the increase in diffusion diameter showed a good linear relationship with glucose concentration between 1.4–7.0 mM, and the limit of quantification was 1.4 mM. Finally, the applicability of the proposed strategy was successfully verified by measuring glucose concentrations in fruit samples. The results generated by the developed paper-based sensor were in good agreement with the results obtained from a glucose assay kit. The recoveries were 91.8%–99.1%. In short, the present study developed a simple, low-cost and efficient method for assessing fruit quality and for guiding fruit intake for diabetic patients, especially in remote or resource-limited regions.

The effects of treatment with melatonin on ripening of ‘Fuji’ apples during storage at 1 °C for 56 d were investigated. The apples were harvested at the commercial ripening stage and treated with 1 mmol L −1 melatonin. Compared with the control, melatonin treated apples had significant reduced ethylene production (28 d–56 d) and weight loss (14 d–56 d) during storage (p < 0.05). Also, the melatonin treatment maintained better apple skin structure throughout storage. The reduced ethylene production was regulated by the decreased expressions of MdACO1, MdACS1, MdAP2.4 and MdERF109 , based on RNA-Seq analysis, which was validated using qRT-PCR analysis. Moreover, the activity of 3 enzymes, including peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), were significantly increased in melatonin treated fruit (p < 0.05). Taken together, this study highlights the inhibitory effects of melatonin in ethylene biosynthesis and factors influencing postharvest quality in apple.

This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of photothermal films comprising carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in extending the shelf life of kiwifruit. Herein, a novel nanocomposite was synthesized via photothermal synergism by introducing CNPs into CNCs using ultrasonic assembly methods and the resulting composition was mixed with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to develop PVA based films. Results showed that the optimal ratio of CNPs to CNCs was 1:4 for the CNP/CNC composites. The CNPs/CNCs composites mainly bonded through hydrogen bonds and exhibited favorable thermal stability. The mechanical strength of the PVA based films added with 0.2% CNP/CNC composites improved by 79% compared with that of pure PVA films. Water vapor permeability of PVA-based films added with 0.2% CNP/CNC composites reduced by 8%, consistent with the water contact angle results. Notably, the addition of CNPs/CNCs composites to PVA films achieved superior photothermal effects, with the temperature increasing to 76.2°C during 1 min of irradiation, which is 48% higher than that of pure PVA films. Moreover, the addition of CNPs/CNCs composite to PVA films effectively reduced the weight loss and maintained the hardness, pH, and total soluble solid content of kiwifruit during storage. The addition of the CNPs/CNCs composite also delayed the decay time of kiwifruit by 3 days, presenting a novel approach for fruit preservation.

Pomegranate is very favored but highly susceptible to lead contamination that threatens consumer health, and thereby it is essential to establish efficient modes to monitor lead level in pomegranate. A specific and sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for assessing lead pollution in pomegranate based on Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme as recognition receptor and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for signal output. Particularly, the used MOFs exhibited Fenton-like catalytic functions toward methylene blue (MB) as electroactive medium. Integrating with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the Fenton-like MOFs showed high sensitivity for electrochemical detection of Pb 2+ in pomegranate. Moreover, benefiting from the specific recognition of DNAzyme to Pb 2+ , the adjustable strategy was achieved, in which the approaching MB led to a higher signal with the absence of Pb 2+ while the detached MB gave rise to a lower signal with the presence of Pb 2+ . With the use of Fenton-like catalytic MOFs driving electrochemical aptasensing interface, this simplified detection pattern was endowed with sensitive assessment of lead pollution level in pomegranate, highlighting its promising potential in evaluating the safety of foodstuffs.

Artificial scent screening systems, inspired by the mammalian olfactory system, hold promise for fruit ripeness detection, but their commercialization is limited by low sensitivity or pattern recognition inaccuracy. This study presents a portable fruit ripeness prediction system based on colorimetric sensing combinatorics and deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) to accurately identify fruit ripeness. Using the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method, the study discerned the distinctive gases emitted by mango, peach, and banana across various ripening stages. The colorimetric sensing combinatorics utilized 25 dyes sensitive to fruit volatile gases, generating a distinct scent fingerprint through cross-reactivity to diverse concentrations and varieties of gases. The unique scent fingerprints can be identified using DCNN. After capturing colorimetric sensor image data, the densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) was employed, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 97.39% on the validation set and 82.20% on the test set in assessing fruit ripeness. This fruit ripeness prediction system, coupled with a DCNN, successfully addresses the issues of complex pattern recognition and low identification accuracy. Overall, this innovative tool exhibits high accuracy, non-destructiveness, practical applicability, convenience, and low cost, making it worth considering and developing for fruit ripeness detection.

Developing a colorimetry-based artificial scent screening system (i.e., an olfactory visual sensing system) with high sensitivity and accurate pattern recognition for detecting fruit ripeness remains challenging. In this work, we construct a flexible dye/CelluMOFs-based sensor array with improved sensitivity for on-site detection of characteristic gases of fruits and integrate a densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) into the sensor array, enabling it to recognize unique scent fingerprints and categorize the ripeness of fruits. In the system, CelluMOFs are synthesized through in situ growth of γ-cyclodextrin metal–organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) on flexible fiber filter paper to fabricate a uniform, flexible and porous dye/CelluMOFs sensitive membrane. Compared to the pristine filter paper, the CelluMOFs exhibit increased porosity with a 62 times higher specific surface area and a 3-fold increase in dye loading capacity after 12 h of adsorption. The prepared dye/CelluMOFs sensing film shows outstanding mechanical and detection stability with negligible deviation after 100 cycles of rubbing. The colorimetric visualization arrays with multiple colorimetric dye/CelluMOFs chips, enable the sensitive recognition and detection of nine kinds of characteristic fruit odors and achieve a high response at 8–1500 ppm of trans-2-hexenal, showcasing remarkably low gas detection thresholds. On the basis of the ppm-level limit of detection with high sensitivity, the fabricated colorimetric sensor arrays are typically used for in situ assessment of fruit ripeness by integrating DenseNet. This approach achieves a satisfactory classification accuracy of 99.09% on the validation set, enabling high-precision prediction of fruit ripeness levels.

In this paper, a novel binary eutectic phase change material (DA-HDL EPCM) and ternary composite phase change material (HDL-DA-CA/EG CPCM) are proposed for the temperature range of 10–20 °C and 2–8 °C. Compared with traditional ternary phase change materials (2–8 °C), CPCM has higher latent heat value and economic performance. The ternary CPCM uses dodecyl alcohol (DA) and 1,6 hexadiol (HDL) as the main eutectic phase change energy storage materials, and n-capric acid (CA) as the temperature modifier. A kind of HDL-DA-CA/EG composite phase change material (CPCM) was prepared by vacuum adsorption method, which solved the problems of low thermal conductivity and easy leakage of ternary CPCM. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal property analyzer (TCA) and high and low temperature alternating test chamber were used to characterize the thermal properties, microstructure, thermal conductivity and cyclic stability of related PCM. Experimental results: The final ratio of CPCM is 43.61%DA + 25.6%HDL + 23.08%CA + 7.7%EG, the phase transition temperature is 2.9 °C, the latent heat of phase transition is 181.3 J/g, and the thermal conductivity is 1.90 W/mK. After 500 cycles, the phase transition temperature of CPCM has little change, and the latent heat of phase transition is 169.8 J/g, which is reduced by 6.34 %, not more than 10 %, and has good stability. Finally, the simulation application data show that CPCM has a good application prospect in fruit and vegetable cold chain logistics.

The peach fruit moth is a significant pest of fruit crops. The primary component of its sex pheromone is (Z7)-eicosene-11-one (Z7-20-11kt). Using ethyl 4-bromobutyrate as the starting material, a Wittig reaction was conducted to synthesize ethyl (Z7)-undecenoate. This intermediate was subsequently hydrolyzed and acylated to yield (Z7)-undecenoyl chloride, which was then coupled with N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine to form the Weinreb amide 6. Finally, 6 was reacted with nonylmagnesium bromide to afford the target product Z7-20-11kt. The novelty of this synthetic route lies in the reductive addition of the Weinreb amide to a nonyl Grignard reagent to construct the ketone carbonyl group. This method utilizes relatively low-cost starting materials, achieves an overall yield of 35%, and has been successfully scaled up to kilogram-scale production. Field trials confirmed that the synthesized Z7-20-11kt exhibits a potent trapping effect against the target pest.

In response to the decline in fruit quality post-harvest caused by intense metabolism, microbial infections, and nutrient depletion, this study has successfully developed a multifunctional composite film (SPP16-TE). This film boasts UV-blocking, antibacterial, antioxidant, and biodegradable properties. The film was fabricated using sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as fully biodegradable matrices, together with the natural cross-linker phytic acid (PA) and anthocyanin-rich Zijuan tea extract (TE) as sustainable functional agents. Results show that the addition of PA significantly enhanced film flexibility (EAB: SP=30.54%, SPP16=103.32%), UV-blocking capability (SE%: SP<80%, SPP16=80-95%), and soil degradation rate (SP=30.74%, SPP16=81.23%). Mechanistically, the cross-linking effect of PA strengthened the polymeric network, improving ductility, while its light-absorbing properties contributed to UV shielding. The accelerated degradation is attributed to the acidic hydrolysis facilitated by PA. In comparison, the integration of TE imparted excellent antioxidant properties (with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging rates of 96.71% and 96.05%, respectively) and antibacterial activity (exhibiting inhibition rates of 11.29% and 33.00% against Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , respectively). These functionalities are ascribed to the anthocyanins and polyphenols in TE, which can donate hydrogen/electrons to neutralize free radicals and disrupt microbial cell membranes. In the fresh application of blueberries and green grapes, this film effectively slowed the loss of fruit weight, the decrease in hardness, and the deterioration of appearance quality, likely by establishing a modified atmosphere, reducing oxidation, and suppressing microbial growth. This work proposes a green and scalable strategy for sustainable fruit and vegetable preservation.

Multifunctional zein films were developed using Pickering emulsions and γ-CD-MOFs. • Pickering emulsions improved mechanical performance while providing active preservation. • γ-CD-MOFs create an effective gas barrier, minimizing O 2 and CO 2 permeability. • The non-toxic, biodegradable film extended shelf-life of cherry tomatoes (15 d) and grapes (10 d). The development of eco-friendly food packaging from biomacromolecules offers a sustainable alternative to conventional petrochemical-based materials. However, effectively addressing both intelligent control and biodegradability remains a significant challenge. Herein, inspired by the nature leaf defense and respiration, for the first time, γ-cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) and cinnamaldehyde-loaded Pickering emulsions (PE) are combined within a zein matrix to simultaneously target both external microbial spoilage and internal respiratory physiology of fresh produce. The resulting composite film with an optimal 4 wt% CD-MOFs loading exhibited exceptional gas barrier properties because of its CO 2 adsorption ability, achieving a minimal O 2 permeability and CO 2 permeability, which can efficiently inhibit the respiration of fruit. Furthermore, the PE conferred exceptional UV resistance (~100% at 280–400 nm), potent antioxidant activity (92.5% DPPH and 91.2% ABTS scavenging), and broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy (about 100% inhibition of E. coli and S. aureus ). The resulting composite films also exhibited improved mechanical properties and flexibility while maintaining biodegradability and biocompatibility. Application of these films effectively preserved the freshness and visual appeal of various fruits, demonstrating their potential as a safe and effective food preservation material. This work offers a promising strategy for fabricating advanced, multifunctional packaging materials from natural polymers. Download: Download high-res image (144KB) Download: Download full-size image

Conventional spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) based optical property inversion is inefficient, while deep learning methods suffer from heavy reliance on large-scale real datasets. To address this contradiction, a simulation-driven approach for subsurface fruit bruise discrimination was proposed. An SFDI simulation environment was built with Blender to generate 800 paired datasets of diffuse reflectance images and optical transport coefficients, overcoming the high cost and long cycle of real dataset acquisition. We designed the CBAM-GAN-U-Net model and adopted surface profile correction in the prediction method to eliminate curved surface-induced non-planar distortion, with the whole method validated on liquid phantoms, green apples and crown pears. This prediction method achieved high accuracy in predicting the reduced scattering coefficientμs′, with NMAE of 0.021 ± 0.007 (phantoms), 0.039 ± 0.012 (severely bruised green apples) and 0.044 ± 0.015 (severely bruised crown pears), outperforming U-Net and GANPOP. Based on the predictedμs′, a discrimination strategy combining coefficient of variation, mean ratio and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was adopted, attaining 100% accuracy for non-bruised/bruised fruit discrimination, with misclassification rates of 6% (green apples) and 8% (crown pears) for mild/severe bruise differentiation. This method enables accurate subsurface fruit bruise detection, providing a reliable technical solution for the fruit and vegetable industry and helping reduce postharvest supply chain losses.
