Chelating agents significantly enhanced SDZ degradation in UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system. • The CA-enhanced systems operate efficiently across pH 3–8. • OH was the dominant reactive species, O₂· − and 1 O₂ played minor roles in SDZ removal. • Degradation pathways produced intermediates with lower toxicity than SDZ. • The system showed broad-spectrum reactivity and stability in natural freshwater. Antibiotics, widely detected in aquatic environments, pose significant threats to ecosystems and human health due to their recalcitrance in conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study systematically investigated the enhancement effects and mechanisms of three chelating agents (CAs) including NTA, EDTA and EDDS on sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation in the UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system. Results showed that CAs significantly improved SDZ removal efficiency by complexing iron ions, promoting Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling thereby enhancing photo-induced Fenton reactions. The NTA/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system exhibited the highest performance, achieving 90.5% SDZ removal within 20 min, followed by EDTA (90.1%) and EDDS (88.7%) and without CAs (<35%). The CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system maintained high efficiency over a broad pH range (3–8), overcoming the pH limitation of traditional UV-Fenton processes. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments confirmed ·OH was the dominant reactive oxygen species and O₂· − and 1 O₂ also played minor roles. Degradation pathways of SDZ included ·OH oxidation, S N bond cleavage, and ring-opening reactions, producing intermediates with lower toxicity than SDZ. Meanwhile, the CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system could effectively remove various antibiotics (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline) and maintain stability in the presence of inorganic anions and humic acid. Moreover, the CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system performed well in natural fresh water matrices, highlighting its practical application potential for antibiotic-contaminated water treatment. An efficient and sustainable dye wastewater degradation system is designed by using Fe 2+ -modified graphene oxide/MXenes (GO/MX-Fe 2+ ) composites. Experimental results demonstrated that the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites acted as an efficient catalyst for Fenton-like reaction; moreover, they functioned as an adsorbent to remove dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater, enhancing the degradation rate and overall purification performance. Furthermore, the study partially confirmed that the ferrous ions involved in the reaction originate from the cross-linking process during hydrothermal synthesis, rather than adsorption. By controlling the dosage of Fe 2+ , efficient degradation can be achieved while inhibiting the formation of iron sludge. Notably, the system generated a small amount of non-iron byproducts during methylene blue (MB) treatment and almost none in the degradation of other dyes, reflecting its wide applicability. The reaction pH adaptability broadened from acidic to mildly alkaline conditions. The rate of MB within 1 h reached more than 95 %, and the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites exhibited good recyclability. This study demonstrated that due to their straightforward preparation, superior performance and minimal secondary pollution, the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites are an example of an efficient and sustainable approach for the design of composite materials for dye degradation and environmental remediation.

The detrimental effects of Fe-ion crosstalk on LiFePO 4 ||Graphite battery performance, coupled with limited mechanistic insights into solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) evolution under such interference, warrant systematic investigation. Herein, advanced characterization techniques—including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy—are employed to reveal SEI evolution on graphite anodes under Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ influence. Results demonstrate that Fe 3+ exerts more severe adverse effects than Fe 2+ . Specifically, Fe 2+ primarily promotes conventional electrolyte reduction reactions, increasing H 2 , CH 4 , and CO 2 generation. In contrast, Fe 3+ facilitates radical combinations and catalyzes two-electron reductions, triggering side reactions releasing CO, C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 . The SEI thickness under Fe-ion interference (Fe 2+ : 7.20–13.76 nm, Fe 3+ : 9.12–17.55 nm) significantly exceeds that of the base electrolyte (3.15–7.64 nm), with Fe deposits accumulating in organometallic forms. Critically, the presence of Fe 3+ and its adverse impacts on battery safety and cycling stability are validated in practical pouch cells. This study uncovers the chemical nature of the dissolved Fe ion and its deposits, provides mechanistic insights into its interference with SEI properties and Li-ion battery performances, which in turn helps to mitigate such detrimental effects.

Non-thermal plasma coupling Fe 2+ containing liquid-phase catalysis (NTP-LC/ Fe 2+ ) can effectively reuse the byproduct ozone (O 3 ) of NTP in LC/ Fe 2+ for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation. However, the low recycling rate of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ resulted in poor catalytic effect of the coupling system. In this study, the chelator protocatechuic acid (PCA) was added to LC/Fe 2+ to enhance the removal of representative VOC acetone. The results showed that adding PCA increased the acetone removal efficiency to 91% and kept O 3 ∼ 100% removed within 180 min. The mechanism of PCA-enhanced acetone degradation was that PCA accelerated the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle by generating PCA-Fe 3+ chelates, which prevented the Fe 3+ from precipitation and promoted the production of OH and O 2 - for acetone oxidation.

The nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) produces strong chemiluminescence (CL)-emission due to hydroxyl radical ( • OH) induced electron-hole transition in N-CDs. The Fe 2+ has the ability to generate • OH from available hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Therefore, a pre-mixed N-CDs/H 2 O 2 solution was utilized for selective quantification of Fe 2+ in solution via CL-emission. A linear increase in the CL-emission intensity was observed within increase in Fe 2+ concentration. The N-CDs/H 2 O 2 system enabled the detection of Fe 2+ up to lower concentration of 0.2 × 10 −9 M with a linear dynamic range of 1.0 × 10 −9 –1.0 × 10 −6 M. Significantly, no CL-emission was observed when other divalent cations , Al 3+ , Fe 3+ , or Cr 3+ were injected to this system. Moreover, no interference was observed when a mixed solution of Fe 2+ and other cations were introduced to N-CDs/H 2 O 2 . The practical evaluation of N-CDs/H 2 O 2 system was demonstrated for detection of Fe 2+ in tap, lotus pond, and canal water samples. The easy detection, high sensitivity, and selectivity make this method a significant tool for analysis of Fe 2+ in solution.

The sluggish Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle was the rate-limiting step in the Fenton-like reaction, and metal-free carbonaceous materials are considered as emerging alternatives to solve this problem. However, the effect of carbon material properties on the distribution of reactive species remains poorly understood. This study investigated the possibility and mechanism of using biochar to accelerate the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle to overcome the low efficiency of Fe 3+ /persulfate (PS) catalytic oxidation of phenanthrene . More importantly, the contribution of reactive species in the reaction systems with the variation of biochar pyrolysis temperatures was quantitatively studied. The results showed that medium-temperature derived biochar (BC500) had the greatest ability to enhance the Fenton-like system compared to the low- and high-temperature (BC350/700), and the first-order rate constant achieved 5.2 and 35.7-fold increase against the biochar/PS and Fe 3+ /PS systems, respectively. Using electrochemical evidence, sulfoxide probe tests, and steady-state concentration calculations, radicals yields were found to rise and then reduce with decreasing pyrolysis temperature, while the nonradical contribution of Fe(IV) increased to 56.3%. Electron paramagnetic resonance, Boehm titration, and Raman spectroscopy unraveled that the enhanced effect of biochar resulted from itself persistent free radicals, phenolic-OH, and edge defects, which enabled electron transfer between Fe 3+ and biochar. Fe 2+ was thus continuously generated and effectively activated the PS. This work enables a better understanding of the Fe 3+ -mediated Fenton-like reaction in the presence of biochar and provides a sustainable green strategy for Fenton chemistry with potential applications.

Semiconductor-based photocatalyst , whose efficiency distinctly hinges on the separation of photoinduced charge transfer within the interface of bulk structure, has incurred some intractable issues due to the existing energy barrier. Regulating the structure of MOF reasonably would feature an accelerated charge separation, and an effective utilization of photogenerated charges. Herein, a new type of MOF with both interior linker and metal valence modulation (m-MIL-101–1.0) is reported to boost photocatalytic activity owing to the formed charge migration pathway. At first, we introduced defective sites via CTAB, which acted as exposed sites for further reduction reaction. Then, NaBH 4 was used to achieve metal valence regulation. Benefiting from the unique structure, the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox center was considered as a driving force to facilitate the charge transfer. It is properly considered that the activity improvement is attributed to the synergistic effect of both internal and external charge transfer channels. As a result, such m-MIL-101–1.0 has a higher activity than that of MIL-101 for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in water. We envision this interior configuration would be an ideal paradigm for tuning the activity of MOFs and extending the boundaries of MOF-based photocatalysts.

A fluorescence metal-organic framework [Zn 3 (APT) 4 ]·2H 2 O (Zn-APT) was synthesized from Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and 2-amino-6-purinethiol (ATP) by the solvothermal reaction. Zn-APT has a novel compact structure with a nbo topology type. The analyses of single-crystal diffraction reveal that Zn-APT crystallizes in a cubic crystal system and F d 3 ¯ c space group. Based on a large amount of π-conjugated organic ligands of ATP and d 10 metal center of Zn 2+ , Zn-APT can emit strong luminescence. It can be used as a fluorescent probe to detect Fe 3+ ion effectively. The detection limit is 0.28 μM and K sv (quenching efficiency) is 2.1 × 10 4 M −1 . In addition, Zn-APT can adsorb hemoporphyrin dihydrochloride to produce a red-brown crystal Zn-APT-PH. Interestingly, it can also be used to detect Fe 2+ ion efficiently with the detection limit of 0.12 μM and K sv of 1.9 × 10 4 M −1 .

An effective method based on Fe 2+ assisted cold plasma (CP) to pretreat pineapple peel cellulose for the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was proposed in this study. The mechanism underlying Fe 2+ assisted CP pretreatment based on the structural changes of cellulose was investigated. Results showed that the cellulose preabsorbed Fe 2+ , followed by 60 min of CP treatment, and then was nanofibrillated into CNF via ultrasonication. Fe 2+ assisted CP treatment exhibited strong capacity to significantly decrease the degree of polymerization of cellulose and to enhance electrostatic repulsion of fibrils. Furthermore, the roughness and breakage were observed on the surface of pretreated cellulose. The content of inter-molecular hydrogen bonds and average crystallite size (D hkl ) also decreased significantly. The current results provided useful fundamental insights into Fe 2+ assisted CP and cellulose interaction, which should be beneficial to developing new pretreatment methods for disintegrating cellulose into CNF.

Electro-Fenton (EF) has shown great advantages in the effecient degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants through in situ generation of •OH, and the main limitations on system performance are the efficiencies of H 2 O 2 activation and Fe 2+ regeneration. In this research, a triple-cathode EF system with a microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathode for the acceleration of Fe 2+ regeneration, a gas diffusion electrode for H 2 O 2 production and a stainless steel mesh (SSM) for electro-activation of H 2 O 2 was designed for efficient degradation of organic pollutants. The triple-cathode EF exhibited improved removal rate for recalcitrant organic pollutants with an average electricity consumption of 18.2 kWh Kg −1 TOC for Rhodamine B degradation, and the dosage of Fe 2+ could be reduced to 0.1 mM due to better utilization of H 2 O 2 and inhibition of parasitic reactions. Electrochemical characterization and theoretical calculation revealed that both one-electron reduction and H*-mediated activation contributed to the electro-activation of H 2 O 2 on SSM. This work demonstrates a novel construction and feasible approach for efficient EF with low cost.

A functional monomer, namely, 1-hexene-4-(benzal-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridines)pyridinium bromide (HTP) was synthesized and incorporated into the cross-linking network of microgels. The HTP-functionalized microgels (HTP-MGs) were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization with N-isopropylacrylamide as the main monomer, 1-vinylimidazole as a quaternization cross-linkable comonomer, HTP as the functional comonomer, and 1,6-dibromhexane as the quaternization agent. The obtained HTP-MGs were spherical with a hydrodynamic radius Rh of 205 ± 2 nm and uniform size distribution in HEPES buffer aqueous solutions at 25 °C. The HTP-MGs exhibited a characteristic UV–vis absorption peak at 315 nm and a characteristic fluorescent emission peak at 430 nm, respectively. The HTP-MGs can selectively, sensitively, and optically respond to Fe2+ ions in aqueous solution with a fast response time of 3 s in wide pH (2–10) and temperature (25–50 °C) ranges, resulting in a color change in HTP-MG HEPES buffer aqueous solutions from colorless to purplish red, which can be easily distinguished by naked eyes. A linear concentration range of 0–14 μM and a detection limit (DL) of 82 nM were achieved for detecting Fe2+ ions in HEPES buffer aqueous solutions (pH = 7) at 25 °C. The molar binding ratio of the HTP moiety within HTP-MGs to Fe2+ ions was 2:1, as revealed by Job’s plot. It was found that the coexistence of 15 species of other metal ions except of Cu2+ ions studied here did not affect the detection of Fe2+ ions. Furthermore, a fluorescent emission peak at 371 nm with strongly enhanced fluorescent intensity was observed for HTP-MG HEPES buffer aqueous solutions with the addition of Zn2+ or Cd2+ ions. By combining the optical response to Fe2+ ions and fluorescent response to Zn2+ ions, it was demonstrated that HTP-MGs could also have potential applications in the fields of encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Intracellular amplification of oxidative stress has been proved to be an effective strategy to induce cancer cell death and the Fenton reaction was regarded as a robust way to generate ROS which are the main cause of amplified oxidative stress. However, current Fenton reaction-inducing agents lacked stability in the bio-environment and failed to exert their ideal catalytic performance. We, hereby, designed an Fe2+-based metal–organic framework (MOF) to deliver Fe2+ to cancer cells to trigger the Fenton reaction and produce excessive ROS. The obtained nano-scale MOF that was constructed by ferrous acetate and organic ligands (BDC-NH2) endowed itself with excellent stability in bio-media and pH responsively degraded itself to release Fe2+ in the acid tumor microenvironment. Such a characteristic demonstrated robust capacity to catalyze the Fenton reaction and produce considerable ROS and thus induced distinct Fe2+-mediated cell ferroptosis. Meanwhile, directly exploiting an Fe2+-based MOF to inhibit and kill cancer cells circumvented the potential adverse effects of loading drugs (like the cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin, and the nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity of cisplatin) and proved to be biocompatible in in vivo experiments. More importantly, observations of the in vivo antitumor experiment attested its impressive inhibition on cancer cells and amelioration on the physical health of treated mice. Our study thus presented a novel and biocompatible ferroptosis strategy to be applied in effective clinical cancer therapy.
