In the present work, biomass derived graphitized carbon wrapped cementite nanoparticle composite (LSC@Fe 3 C) was prepared and employed as an electrode modify material to establish an electrochemical platform for determining levofloxacin in aqueous environmental samples. The conductive composite material was characterized X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectrum. Subsequently, an electrochemical method based on differential pulse voltammetry was optimized and applied. Based on the synergetic effect of graphitized carbon and Fe 3 C, the proposed sensor emerged good electrocatalytic activity of levofloxacin, high sensitivity, low detection limit (0.063 μM), wide linear range and excellent selectivity. The fabricated sensor was also successfully applied onto the determination of levofloxacin in real seawater samples and showed good reliability.

Iron carbide (Fe 3 C) has gained significant attention for use in energy storage applications. Furthermore, using a nano-scale metal as the catalyst can reduce the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI), thus enhancing capacity. For these reasons, hierarchical Fe/Fe 3 C/C nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning with subsequent thermal treatment and used as the anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). These anodes demonstrate a good rate and high capacities. At 0.1 A g −1 , the Fe/Fe 3 C/C nanofiber electrode maintains 518 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles. When tested at 1 A g −1 , the discharge capacity gradually increases and reaches 663 mA h g −1 after 1200 cycles. This work demonstrates the possibility to design and develop transition metal carbides (TMCs) for use in energy storage.

Graphical A tubular core-shell catalyst of Fe/Fe 3 C-900 has been designed and synthesized which shows an excellent activity, chemo-selectivity and stability for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes under mild conditions. Recent years, tubular structure as the carrier loading nanoparticles has been reported more and more frequently which is synthesized by pyrolysis polyhedral MOFs. However, the construct mechanism has not been referred. Herein, a tubular structure has been designed by calcining modified ZIF-8 under different temperature to reveal the formation process of tubular carbon from the polyhedron. As a result, a pod-like core-shell catalyst of Fe/Fe 3 C-900 has been obtained and exhibits a high activity and excellent substituent tolerance for the reduction of nitro groups under mild conditions.

Catalysts based on Fe 3 C suffer from metal dissolution and strong adsorption of oxygen intermediates. In this work, a stable Fe 3 C@C/N–C heterojunction is constructed by combining Fe-induced graphitization of coal-tar carbon with ammonia-activated porous carbon nanotubes. The CNTs provide a conductive framework and abundant anchoring sites, enabling uniform in situ formation of Fe 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated within graphitic layers. The catalyst delivers excellent bifunctional performance, with an ORR onset potential of 1.052 V, a half-wave potential of 0.844 V, and an OER overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . A Zn–air battery using this catalyst achieves a peak power density of 167.4 mW cm −2 and retains 95 % capacity over 160 h. Finite-element simulations reveal enhanced fields, and DFT calculations confirm an optimized electronic structure with reduced reaction barriers. This work offers a strategy for designing durable, high-efficiency catalysts for metal–air batteries.

Nitrite is commonly found in the natural environment and in everyday human activities. However, excessive nitrite consumption can potentially harm human health. Consequently, it is crucial to develop a reliable and sensitive method for nitrite detection. In this work, trichloroacetic acid functionalized Cl-Fe-MIL-88B metal-organic framework is obtained through nucleophilic reaction between animated Fe-MIL-88B and trichloroacetic acid, which is then annealed with melamine in an N 2 atmosphere to produce the Fe/Cl/N triply-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) wrapped with Fe 3 C nanoparticles. Owing to the effective doping of Fe/Cl/N elements, the charge distribution and chemical activity of the bamboo-like structure are tailored, greatly improving the conductivity and facilitating electron transfer of the composite for potential electrocatalytic reaction. The Fe 3 C nanoparticles wrapped inside the CNTs contribute to expose more active sites and provide effective surface area. Accordingly, the Fe/Cl/N doped bamboo-like structure modified glassy carbon electrode shows excellent electrochemical nitrite sensing properties with a high sensitivity of 1060 µA cm −2 mM −1 , a low detection limit of 0.61 µM in a wide linear concentration range of 5–5000 μM, as well as good anti-interference and long-term stability. Also, the electrochemical sensor has a satisfactory recovery rate for detecting nitrite ions in spiked milk samples. This work proposes a simple precursor chlorination and pyrolysis strategy to obtain metal-filled bamboo-like structure with high electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic properties, endowing great potential in food safety and environment monitoring.

With the rapid development of electronic technology, electromagnetic pollution and thermal issues are increasingly exacerbating, particularly those enabling microwave-infrared compatibility. However, the integration of electromagnetic protection and thermal management remains a pivotal challenge. This study focuses on the multifunctional compatibility of microwave absorption and infrared stealth, addressing the critical challenge of integrating electromagnetic protection with thermal management for radar-infrared composite detection scenarios. In this work, accompanied by a high-temperature pyrolysis process, three-dimensional conductive network Fe 3 C/C-SiCN (3D Fe 3 C/C-SiCN) composite fibers with microwave absorption and low infrared emissivity were designed and prepared via the electrospinning technique. The Fe 3 C/C-SiCN fibers achieve broadband absorption and low infrared emissivity, an integrated advantage distinguishing them from traditional single-function materials. Microwave absorption and low infrared emissivity by precisely controlling the carbonization temperature, achieving a reflection loss (RL) of −25.11 dB at 1.58 mm, an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.72 GHz, and stable long-wave infrared (LWIR) emissivity of 0.51 (at 50 °C) in 8–14 μm with a loading of 30% under a temperature of 700 °C. The synergistic effects of Fe 3 C-induced magnetic and interfacial polarization losses, the conductive SiCN-derived carbon network, and the thermally insulating 3D porous structure with low LWIR emissivity result in outstanding multifunctional performance. Fe 3 C/C-SiCN composite fibers would hold significant importance in the fields of electromagnetic protection, offering a novel solution for multifunctional electromagnetic protection beyond conventional single-band absorbers.

Efficient and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts represent a cornerstone for high-energy-density rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report a facile one-step pyrolysis synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphite carbon-encapsulated Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunction nanoparticles (Fe/Fe 3 C@NC) with a well-defined core-shell architecture. The Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunction exhibits prominent interfacial electron transfer from Fe to Fe 3 C. This electron-rich Fe 3 C phase enables superior adsorption modulation toward oxygen intermediates, thereby endowing the catalyst with exceptional bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity. In alkaline media, Fe/Fe 3 C@NC outperforms platinum-group metal (PGM) benchmarks in both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), achieving a smaller OER/ORR overpotential difference than Pt/C + RuO 2 . When integrated into aqueous and flexible zinc-air batteries, Fe/Fe 3 C@NC maintains an impressive 92.6% of its initial round-trip efficiency (RTE) over 1900 h (5700+ cycles), far exceeding the PGM-based control (23.3% RTE decay within 50 h, 150 cycles). Structural characterizations confirm that Fe/Fe 3 C@NC retains its morphology and crystallinity after prolonged cycling, highlighting the critical role of the core-shell architecture in preserving structural/compositional integrity. This work not only elucidates the pivotal role of the Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunctions in enhancing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis but also provides a scalable carbon-encapsulation strategy for designing low-cost, high-performance, and long-lifespan non-noble metal bifunctional catalysts for next-generation metal-air batteries.

Template-assisted pyrolysis enables the synthesis of Fe-based carbonaceous materials with a defined morphology and structure from iron–carbon precursors. However, conventional tangible templates are costly and have limited applications, and their removal process is time-consuming and environmentally harmful. Here, we employ an ultrafast heating technique (1 second to 1800 °C) using a carbothermal shock reactor to treat iron–carbon precursors. The high-density volatile vapor generated during the rapid pyrolytic carbonization of the precursor acts as a pore-forming agent, resulting in a porous carbon matrix. This high-density vapor also restricts the growth area of iron-based nanoparticles, promoting them to form ultrafine small sizes through confined synthesis. Finally, we successfully prepared the CTS–Fe–C-1800 hybrid material containing a porous carbon matrix and iron carbide nanoparticles and tested its electrochemical performance as a multifunctional electrode. As an electrode, the CTS–Fe–C-1800 supercapacitor (SC) exhibits a high specific capacity of 425.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Moreover, the CTS–Fe–C-1800 flexible micro-supercapacitor (MSC), prepared using a PVA/KOH gel electrolyte and CTS–Fe–C-1800, demonstrates an impressive energy density of 71.49 W h kg g−1 at 0.637 kW kg g−1. Additionally, when employed as an anode electrode in a Li-ion battery (LIB), the CTS–Fe–C LIB maintains a capacity of 801.2 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1, surpassing the performance of the majority of reported Fe–C anode electrodes.

Given the scarcity of freshwater and the abundance of seawater resources, electrochemical seawater electrolysis is a more competitive and efficient method for hydrogen production, but it still remains challenging due to the lack of catalysts with efficient activity and corrosion resistance. Among various strategies to enhance catalytic activity, bimetallic carbides have emerged as a promising approach due to their synergistic effects and tunable electronic properties. In this paper, the Fe 3 C-Mo 2 C structure embedded on carbon nanofibers (referred to as Fe 3 C-Mo 2 C@CNFs/0.15) was successfully synthesized by the electrospinning-pyrolysis process. Fe 3 C-Mo 2 C@CNFs /0.15 exhibited superior OER activity in both alkaline freshwater and simulated seawater, with low overpotentials of 228 mV and 247 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , and Tafel slopes of 34.0 mV dec -1 and 37.0 mV dec -1 , respectively, due to its abundant active sites, high conductivity, and fast kinetics. Moreover, the electrolytic cell with Fe 3 C-Mo 2 C @CNFs/0.15 as both cathode and anode achieved 10 mA cm -2 at low cell voltages of 1.65 V and 1.69 V, respectively. It also demonstrated excellent long-term stability up to 48 h and corrosion resistance. This work not only provides a novel strategy for designing low-cost, high-performance OER electrocatalysts but also paves the way for practical applications in seawater electrolysis for sustainable hydrogen production.

Elevated concentrations of nitrite (NO 2 − ) in water pose considerable health risks, including methemoglobinemia and carcinogenesis, yet this issue has been relatively underexplored. This study successfully synthesized Fe-N co-doped carbon (Fe 3 C@Fe-CN-3) by incorporating iron carbide (Fe 3 C) and Fe 0 into N-doped carbon, thereby enhancing the activation of peroxydisulfate (PS) for NO 2 − removal. The impacts of diverse materials and the experimental parameters (different initial pH, PS concentration and ions) on activation efficiency were investigated. The results demonstrate that a molar ratio (1.2) of Fe to N in the raw material led to the formation of Fe 3 C, whereas reducing this ratio to 0.8 resulted in the formation of iron nitride (Fe 4 N). Fe 3 C@Fe-CN-3, synthesized with a molar ratio of 1.2, exhibited the highest removal rate of NO 2 − (73.8 %) at a PS concentration of only 0.2 mM, with a rate constant (K obs ) of 0.049 min −1 . To achieve a basic NO 2 − removal rate (99.5 %), a molar ratio of at least 7:20 between NO 2 − and PS is required. The non-radical pathway involved in NO 2 − removal was confirmed through delayed experiments and electron suppression tests. Meanwhile, Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical scavenging experiments confirmed that hydroxyl radicals ( O H · ) and superoxide anion radicals ( O 2 − · ) play key roles in the removal process. While Fe 3 C@Fe-CN-3 showed excellent reusability, the removal rate was significantly reduced when natural water was employed as the reaction medium, emphasizing the imperative to enhance its selective removal capabilities.

Zinc-iodine (Zn I 2 ) batteries have become one of the research hotspots in recent years in the field of energy storage due to their abundant resources, environmental friendliness, low price, high theoretical capacity (211 mAh g −1 ), and low redox potential. However, the polyiodide shuttle effect is a key challenge. In this work, carbon nanotubes interpenetrating ordered micro mesoporous carbon spheres embedded with fine Fe 3 C nanocrystals (Fe 3 C/CNTs/OMMC) were synthesized by a simple method and used to act as an iodine host material. Benefiting from the unique micro mesoporous structure of OMMC and fine Fe 3 C nanocrystals with abundant active sites, Fe 3 C/CNTs/OMMC has achieved physical confinement and chemical adsorption/catalysis of polyiodides. Meanwhile, highly conductive CNTs facilitate rapid electron conduction and accelerate the reaction. Thus, the Zn I 2 battery using Fe 3 C/CNTs/OMMC-I 2 exhibited excellent cycling stability and good electrochemical performance. It was found that the initial specific capacity was high at a current density of 5 A g −1 , and that 164 mAh g −1 capacity remained after 10,000 cycles. The capacity retention percentage was 82 % after 17,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 .

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) reaction has been considered as a promising process for real effluent treatments. However, the design of effective catalysts for simultaneous H2O2 generation and activation to achieve bifunctional catalysis for O2 toward •OH production remains a challenge. Herein, a core–shell structural Fe-based catalyst (FeNC@C), with Fe3C and FeN nanoparticles encapsulated by porous graphitic layers, was synthesized and employed in a HEF system. The FeNC@C catalyst presented a significant performance in degradation of various chlorophenols at various conditions with an extremely low level of leached iron. Electron spin resonance and radical scavenging revealed that •OH was the key reactive species and FeIV would play a role at neutral conditions. Experimental and density function theory calculation revealed the dominated role of Fe3C in H2O2 generation and the positive effect of FeNx sites on H2O2 activation to form •OH. Meanwhile, FeNC@C was proved to be less pH dependence, high stability, and well-recycled materials for practical application in wastewater purification.
