A facile vapor-phase strategy for exfoliate graphite into high-performance bifunctional graphene heterojunctions. • Strong electromagnetic wave absorption with a minimum RL of −75.3 dB and a broad EAB of 6.08 GHz. • High in-plane thermal conductivity combined with low electrical conductivity. • Surfactant-like dispersibility in solvents, enabling the fabrication of versatile coatings and composites for practical applications. The growing integration and power density of electronics require materials that combine efficient electromagnetic wave absorption with thermal management. However, synthesizing lightweight, processable 2D materials that exhibit strong electromagnetic attenuation alongside high thermal conductivity yet electrical insulation remains a challenge. Here, we present a vapor intercalation-deposition approach of merging graphite exfoliation and metal‑nitrogen‑carbon atomic-layer growth to synthesize a graphene bonded dual-atom FeNi-N-C heterojunction. FeCl 3 in the graphite interlayer can coordinate with 2-methylimidazole and catalyze the formation of C C bonds between graphene and the FeNi-N-C layer during heating. The solution-processable heterojunction exhibits outstanding electromagnetic attenuation of a low reflection loss of −75.3 dB, a broad absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz at 1.75 mm, a radar cross-section reduction of 51.4 dB·m 2 . It also shows low electrical conductivity (0.775 S/cm) and high thermal conductivities (10.57 W·m −1 ·K −1 in-plane, 4.03 W·m −1 ·K −1 out-plane). Mechanistic studies demonstrate that interfacial coupling between graphene and Fe(Ni)-N 4 -C atomic layers synergistically boosts dipole polarization and dielectric loss for enhanced electromagnetic attenuation, and atomic-layer design enables the decoupling of electrical and thermal transport. This work offers a low-cost, scalable route to adaptable two-dimensional heterojunctions for integrated electromagnetic wave absorption and heat dissipation in next-generation electronics. During the electro-Fenton (EF) process, the in-situ activation of H 2 O 2 at the cathode is an important strategy to minimize the ineffective consumption of H 2 O 2 and enhance the reaction efficiency. Accordingly, a structurally ordered FeNi-layered double hydroxide (FeNi-LDH) nanosheet array was in-situ grown on carbon felt (CF) by a simple hydrothermal method. A Fe 2+ -based aliovalent substitution strategy was employed to modulate the morphology and active sites of FeNi-LDH. On one hand, Fe 2+ facilitated the formation of abundant open reactive microspaces by regulating the nucleation rate, which was conducive to the exposure of active sites and the mass transfer process. On the other hand, the aliovalent substitution of Fe 2+ introduced more low-valent metal sites and surface defects (–OH), thereby activating the in-plane metal sites of FeNi-LDH. As a result, the bifunctional Fe(II)-FeNi-LDH/CF-0.5 cathode exhibited an excellent performance. At a low current density of 5 mA cm −2 and with NFX concentrations up to 40 mg L −1 , the EF system removed 92.59% of NFX within 15 min, with a pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 11.67 × 10 −2 min −1 . As the dominant reactive species, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) originated from the combined contributions of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic pathways. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that the abundant surface hydroxyl groups were conducive to the adsorption and activation of H 2 O 2 . This work provides a novel material option for EF systems.

Enzymatic lignin enables confined FeNi alloys and M–N x sites in porous carbon. • A 1.5:1 Fe/Ni ratio drives dual-level electronic regulation for ORR. • The FeNi@ELNC-1.5 composite exhibits an outstanding ORR half-wave potential of 0.903 V, rivaling commercial Pt/C. • DFT links FeNi–carbon coupling to optimized oxygen-intermediate adsorption. • Zn–air batteries reach 1.520 V OCV, 772.93 mAh g −1 specific capacity and 154 h cycling. Slow oxygen electroreduction at the air electrode and the associated dependence on Pt catalysts continue to restrict the deployment of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This study examines whether enzymatic hydrolysis lignin can serve as a renewable carbon precursor for constructing an efficient FeNi-based ORR catalyst. FeNi@ELNC-X catalysts were synthesized by solvothermal treatment followed by pyrolysis and evaluated through physicochemical characterization, rotating-electrode electrochemistry, ZAB tests, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. At an optimized Fe/Ni precursor molar ratio of 1.5:1, the lignin-derived N-doped porous carbon framework confines FeNi alloy nanoparticles and minor Fe 3 C domains, limiting particle aggregation and creating coupled metal-carbon interfaces. In 0.1 M KOH, FeNi@ELNC-1.5 reached E 1/2 = 0.903 V vs. RHE, approaching the response of 20% Pt/C; it also favored a four-electron route and preserved 98.9% of the current over 36,000 s. The calculations indicate that interfacial electronic interactions adjust the binding of *OOH, *O, and *OH. When implemented as the air electrode, the catalyst enabled a ZAB delivering 1.520 V OCV together with a capacity of 772.93 mAh g −1 at a discharge current of 5 mA cm −2 . These findings provide a renewable route to non-precious-metal air-cathode catalysts. Download: Download high-res image (284KB) Download: Download full-size image

Designing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the kinetically divergent hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is challenging due to their conflicting interfacial requirements. Herein, precisely engineered RuS 2 /(FeNi)S 1.03 heterointerfaces are constructed via homogeneous chelation-coupled in situ sulfidation, enabling distinct interfacial mechanisms that independently enhance HER and OER. For HER, the RuS 2 component exclusively optimizes HER through static electronic modulation, where interfacial electron transfer at RuS 2 /(FeNi)S 1.03 interface downshifts the Ru d-band center to −1.99 eV and weakens hydrogen adsorption ( 0.51 eV). This yields superior HER activity with an overpotential of 270 mV@ at 50 mA cm −2 . Conversely, for OER, the (FeNi)S 1.03 phase undergoes dynamic reconstruction, transforming into an OER-catalytically active Fe-NiO oxide with stable RuS 2 (RuS 2 /Fe-NiO interfaces) that reduce intermediate energy barriers and delivers an overpotential of 300 mV at 50 mA cm −2 . This dual-interface synergy enables outstanding bifunctional performance with low cell voltages (1.68 V alkaline water; 1.76 V seawater) and industrial stability (>250 h at 1000 mA cm − 2 ), resolving the mechanistic conflict in bifunctional catalyst design.

The utilization of plant polyphenols as catalyst carriers holds promise for environmentally friendly catalysis. However, challenges such as the inhomogeneous distribution of organic ligands often hinder their effectiveness. In this study, lignin–metal supramolecular framework were formed through ionic coordination self-assembly, achieved by oxidative ammonolysis modified lignin. The specific spatial domain-limiting effect of lignin–metal supramolecular framework ensures the dispersion and stability of catalyst active sites. Carbon-coated trimetallic catalysts (Ru–FeNi@OALC) derived from lignin–metal supramolecules exhibit promising performance, with low overpotentials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, η10 = 290 mV) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, η10 = 52 mV), surpassing commercial noble metal catalysts. Additionally, these catalysts demonstrate long-lasting water-splitting performance, highlighting their potential for sustainable catalytic reactions. Molecular simulations and DFT theoretical calculations elucidate the feasibility of lignin oxidative ammonolysis modification and reveal the coordination mechanism. Furthermore, the abundant defects and disorder in the coordination polymer-derived carbon materials optimize electron transfer processes and accelerate reaction kinetics. This construction strategy towards designable polyphenol–metal supramolecular framework presents a promising avenue for the green synthesis of a variety of metal/carbon composite catalysts, contributing to sustainable catalysis and environmental protection.

As the impurities in alloy may affect its mechanical and physical properties, the determination of trace elements is important to ensure the quality of alloy. However, accurate determination of trace impurities in alloy samples is a big challenge due to their complicated matrix and low concentrations. In this work, matrix-assisted photochemical vapor generation (PVG) was developed for the determination of impurity in alloy samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Bismuth was selected as the target element, which is detrimental to the strength of alloy even at very low concentration. The transition ions existed in alloy worked as the “sensitizers” for the efficient PVG of bismuth, and only formic acid and acetic acid were required for the analysis of alloy samples after digestion. This largely reduced the risks of sample contamination and analyte loss in multiple sample pretreatment involved in conventional analytical methods. The PVG efficiency of bismuth was greatly enhanced, making the sensitive and simple determination of trace analytes in alloy samples feasible. The limit of detection (LOD, 3σ) for Bi was found to be 0.4 ng L − 1 corresponding to 0.54 ng g − 1 for analysis of 0.5 g of alloy sample. A relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.1% was obtained from seven replicate measurements of 0.5 μg L − 1 Bi 3+ in sample matrix. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of Bi in two certified reference materials (Fe Ni based alloys GBW01621 and GBW01622).

Electrochemical water splitting is an important process to produce hydrogen and oxygen for energy storage and conversion devices. However, it is often restricted by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to its sluggish kinetics. To overcome the problem, precious metal oxide-based electrocatalysts, such as RuO2 and IrO2, are widely used. The lack of availability and the high cost of precious metals compel researchers to find other resources for the development of cost-effective, environmentally friendly, earth-abundant, nonprecious electrocatalysts for OER. Such catalysts should have high OER performance and good stability in comparison to those of available commercial precious metal-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we report an inexpensive fabrication of bimetallic iron–nickel nanoparticles on FeNi-foil (FeNi4.34@FeNi-foil) as an integrated OER electrode using a one-step calcination process. FeNi4.34@FeNi-foil obtained at 900 °C shows superior OER activity in alkaline solution with an overpotential as low as 283 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and a small Tafel slope of 53 mV dec–1. The high performance and durability of the as-prepared nonprecious metal electrode even exceeds those of the available commercial RuO2 and IrO2 catalysts, showing great potential in replacing the expensive noble metal-based electrocatalysts for OER.

The ingenious design and synthesis of low-cost, non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is a pressing demand to solve energy crisis and to promote the development of zinc-air batteries. Herein, a simple strategy was developed to derive FeNi incorporated N-doped carbon nanotube (denoted as glu-NiFe) from glucosamine. Extensive metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) and FeNi alloys act as electrocatalytic active sites for ORR and OER, respectively, together with highly graphitized carbon nanotubes for facilitating electron transport. And the combinations endow glu-NiFe with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.85 V and an OER potential of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm −2 , which exceed commercial catalysts of Pt/C and RuO 2 . Furthermore, the rechargeable Zn-air battery based on glu-NiFe delivers a high peak power density of 127 mW cm −2 and superior cycling stability (over 240 h). Moreover, a favorable performance is exhibited by glu-NiFe based all solid-state Zn-air battery. This work will provide some assistance in designing efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for high performance rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Development of cost-effective and efficient oxygen-evolution electrocatalysts is urgently required for exploring renewable hydrogen energy and realizing large scale water splitting. In this work, self-supported FeNi@FeNiB-700 has been developed by a facile and environment-friendly solid-phase boronizing process, and it exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward the OER. It requires overpotentials of 272 mV (η10) and 399 mV (η100) to deliver oxygen-evolution current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, outperforming many previously reported catalysts such as NiCo LDH nanosheets, Ni3S2/NF leaves, CoSe2 NS@CP, etc. The impressive electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of loose and porous bi-metal borides on the surface of the electrode, which guarantees enhanced active surface area and rapid charge/mass transfer. Moreover, the optimum pair of porous Ni–P foam (cathode) ‖ FeNi@FeNiB-700 (anode) in a two-electrode alkaline water electrolyzer also possesses high durability and only requires a cell voltage of 1.65 V to deliver 10 mA cm−2. This study allows for large-scale application of cheap and efficient 3D bi-metal boride electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction and overall water splitting.

In order to reveal the relationship between the structure and the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of different double transition metal decorated catalysts, three different double transition metal and N co-doped carbon material cathode catalyst materials (FeCo–NC, FeNi–NC and CoNi–NC) were prepared in this study. The FeCo–NC catalysts synthesised in this study still showed high ORR activity under alkaline conditions, with a half-wave potential of 0.783 V RHE , a mass activity (MA) of 11.36 A/g (0.77 V RHE ) and an ultimate current density of − 4.46 mA cm −2 ; after 30,000 cycles, the half-wave potential only decreased to 99.3% of the initial potential. Meanwhile, we employ MS to establish three different double transition metal and N co-doped graphene catalysts and to calculate and analyse their desorption properties, leading to the FeCo–NC material being the model with the highest ORR activity, which is consistent with the experimental results. Precisely regulating the defect degree in metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals and exploring the structure-activity relationship is of great significance for urea-assisted seawater electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. Herein, a series of X-FeNi-TDC nanoarrays with various defects are successfully constructed through the competitive coordination of ligand 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (H 2 TDC) and fluorinated acetic acid modulators with different pK a and coordination ability of -COO. The 20D-FeNi-TDC nanosheets containing more unsaturated sites and moderate electron delocalization exhibit multifunctional activity with an overpotential of 194 mV in OER, 116 mV in HER and an applied voltage of 1.326 V in UOR at 10 mA cm - 2 . In addition, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation further elucidate alterations in pore structure and electronic arrangement of metal sites. This study provides insight into the mechanism by which modulators regulate defects in MOF-based electrocatalyst.

High-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are urgently desired to improve the overall efficiency of electrochemical water splitting. Here, a porous and self-supported FeNi-alloy fiber paper is successfully fabricated to achieve excellent OER performance with an ultralow overpotential, as well as remarkable stability. It is demonstrated that Fe substitution into metallic nickel can enable the inactive metallic nickel to endow highly electrocatalytic activity. Therefore, Fe substitution plays a key role for the outstanding performance. Specifically, the leaching of partial Fe atoms on surface of alloy facilitates surface reconstruction to generate active FeNi-oxyhydroxides under OER conditions. Meanwhile, Fe atoms can induce the lengthening of Ni-O bonds within oxyhydroxides for promoting the decomposition of *OOH intermediate species into O 2 . This work provides new insights into the underlying mechanisms of Fe substitution into metal nickel for improving OER activity, which can accelerate the exploitation of low-cost, efficient and durable electrocatalysts.
