The construction of Z-scheme photocatalyst materials mimicking the natural photosynthesis system provides many advantages, including increased light harvesting, spatially separated reductive and oxidative active sites and strong redox ability. Here, a novel Bi 2 S 3 nanorod@In 2 S 3 nanoparticle heterojunction photocatalyst synthesized through one-pot hydrothermal method for Cr 6+ reduction is reported. A systematic investigation of the microstructural and compositional characteristics of the heterojunction catalyst confirms an intimate facet coupling between (440) crystal facet of In 2 S 3 and (060) crystal facet of Bi 2 S 3 , which provides a robust heterojunction interface for charge transfer. When tested under visible-light irradiation, the Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with 15% Bi 2 S 3 loading content achieves the highest Cr 6+ photoreduction efficiency of nearly 100% with excellent stability, which is among the best-reported performances for Cr 6+ removal. Further examination using optical, photoelectrochemical, impedance spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy characterizations reveal greatly improved photogenerated charge separation and transfer efficiency, and confirm Z-scheme electronic structure of the photocatalyst. The Z-scheme Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 photocatalyst demonstrated here presents promise for the removal of highly toxic Cr 6+ , and could also be of interest in photocatalytic energy conversion.

In this work, carbon quantum dots@In 2 S 3 hollow tube (CQDs@In 2 S 3 ) with sheet-like hierarchical structure was synthesized by sulfidation CQDs@In-MIL-68. The CQDs@In 2 S 3 -2 exhibited the optimal Cr(VI) reductive ratio of nearly 100% after 45 min light irradiation in solution with pH of 4. The enhanced Cr(VI) reduction activity was ascribed to the efficient separation of electrons and holes after coupling of CQDs. The ·O 2 − was the dominant active specie to reduce Cr(VI), and possible mechanism was proposed. This work provides thought for design of high-performance photocatalysts by loading electron-collecting species to remove environmental pollutants .

Antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) is a narrow-band-gap semiconductor that has been increasingly used as an excellent light-harvesting material in photoelectrocatalysis. The unique connections of the one-dimensional (Sb 4 Se 6 ) n ribbon structural units determine the high anisotropy of their carrier transport. In this study, a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-modified quasi-one-dimensional Sb 2 Se 3 @In 2 S 3 light-trapping heterostructure was successfully constructed by vapor transport deposition followed by an in situ hydrothermal method. The results showed that the thickness of the in situ grown non-layered In 2 S 3 nanosheets was significantly reduced from 30 to 10 nm under the space-confinement effect of rGO, facilitating the construction of light-trapping nanostructures and increasing the electrochemically active surface area of the photoelectrode. The quasi-one-dimensional Sb 2 Se 3 @In 2 S 3 -rGO nanorod photoelectrode achieved a higher photocurrent density (1.169 mA cm −2 ), which was 2 and 16 times higher than that of Sb 2 Se 3 @In 2 S 3 and pristine Sb 2 Se 3 , respectively. The ultrathin In 2 S 3 nanosheets were co-modified with rGO nanosheets to fabricate a brush-like composite photoelectrode that exhibited favourable stability with an average hydrogen production rate of 16.59 µmol cm −2 h −1 under neutral conditions. The experimental results and theoretical calculations both showed that the significant improvement in photoelectrochemical performance can be perfectly explained by the type-II heterojunction mechanism. This study provides a new exploration to design rGO-modified composite photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical applications.

The advanced photocatalytic technology with conversion of renewable solar energy to the clean hydrogen (H 2 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) chemicals can effectively realize the national goals of “carbon emission peak & carbon neutrality”. To this end, the indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 )/zinc indium sulfide (Zn 3 In 2 S 6 ) heterojunctions with double sulfur vacancies (Vs) were successfully prepared by a feasible in-situ hydrothermal approach. The as-formed heterojunctions (denoted as Vs-ISZIS6) showed the high-performance bifunctional activities towards the both photocatalytic H 2 evolution and H 2 O 2 generation. Especially, the 10Vs-ISZIS6 sample presented the highest photocatalytic H 2 production rate (7051 μmol/h/g), which is 32.1, 2.0, 14.4, and 1.4-folds greater than that of In 2 S 3 , Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , VS-In 2 S 3 , and Vs-Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , respectively. In addition, the 20Vs-ISZIS6 heterojunction possessed the optimum concentration of H 2 O 2 production with reaching 256.4 μM under 2 h of visible-light irradiation. The boosted photocatalytic performances might be caused by the synergistic effect of the presence of Vs and the construction of heterostructure between Vs-In 2 S 3 and Vs-Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , leading to the increasing visible-light absorption and promoting the photogenerated carriers separation efficiency. As a result, the possible mechanism of improved photocatalytic performances of the Vs-ISZIS6 heterojunctions was proposed. This work offers an available avenue for developing of nanostructured heterojunctions for sustainable solar-to-chemical fuel conversion.

Nitrogen doping introduces sulfur vacancies and lattice distortion into In 2 S 3 , which enhances charge separation and provides anchoring sites for Ag species. • Achieves a high H 2 O 2 production rate of 965 μmol g −1 ·h −1 via the 2e − ORR pathway. • DFT reveals Ag single atoms optimize *OOH adsorption; clusters boost electron redistribution. • Exhibits efficient degradation of perphenazine (95% removal within 30 min). • Operates effectively in pure water without sacrificial agents and shows excellent stability. To address the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers in indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 ) and meet the growing demand for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production systems, this study proposes a rational design. Leveraging active nitrogen species generated from urea decomposition during hydrothermal treatment, we successfully doped the In 2 S 3 lattice to construct a nitrogen-modified indium sulfide (N-In 2 S 3 ) substrate, and subsequently co-anchored silver single atoms and clusters (Ag SA+C /N-In 2 S 3 ) onto it for efficient photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production and pollutant degradation. Nitrogen (N) doping induced sulfur vacancies and lattice distortion, enhancing charge separation and surface reactivity. Ag species were atomically dispersed and firmly anchored onto the N-In 2 S 3 support, serving as efficient electron sinks and active sites. The optimized Ag SA+C /N-In 2 S 3 achieved a remarkable H 2 O 2 production rate of 965 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water via a predominant two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) pathway, significantly outperforming pristine In 2 S 3 and N-In 2 S 3 . Combined with experimental characterization and DFT calculations revealed that Ag single atoms optimized the adsorption of the *OOH intermediate and reduced the reaction free energy barrier, while Ag clusters facilitated electron redistribution and enhanced oxygen activation. It also demonstrated superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency for organic pollutant like perphenazine (95% removal in 30 min). This study highlights the synergistic effect of bulk doping and surface atomic-level engineering in developing high-performance photocatalysts for sustainable chemical synthesis and environmental remediation. The necessity for high-efficiency, low-power room-temperature (RT) ammonia (NH3) sensors is particularly acute in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. However, conventional chemiresistive sensors frequently require elevated temperatures to initiate reactions, leading to high energy consumption and potential safety risks. Inspired by plant photosynthesis, this paper successfully designs a ternary S-scheme heterojunction for a photo-activated RT NH3 sensor. The design effectively mimics the efficient charge transfer process in photosynthesis, thereby significantly promoting the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers and enhancing the sensing performance. Experimental results demonstrate exceptional performance under illumination: a high response value of 1679% (representing a 20-fold improvement over the dark state), rapid response and recovery times of 2.1 s and 1.9 s, respectively, along with outstanding selectivity, excellent stability, and a detection limit as low as 17 ppb. This work demonstrates a novel, efficient RT photo-activated NH3 sensor and provides innovative insights into designing biomimetic, smart gas-sensing materials and devices.

The limitations imposed by the high carrier recombination rate in the current photocatalytic H2O2 production system substantially restrict the rate of H2O2 generation. Herein, we successfully prepared an In2S3/HTCC dense heterojunction bridged by In–S–C bonds through in situ polymerization of glucose on In2S3. This interfacial In–S–C bond provides a fast transfer channel for electrons at the interface to achieve a highly efficient interfacial charge transfer efficiency, leading to the formation of an enhanced built-in electric field between In2S3 and HTCC, thus dramatically accelerating the rate of charge separation and effectively prolonging the lifetime of the photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the coverage of HTCC enhances the absorption of visible light and sorption of O2 by In2S3, while lowering its two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) energy barrier. Notably, our research demonstrates that In2S3/HTCC can generate H2O2 not only through the well-known two-step one-electron ORR but also via an alternative pathway utilizing 1O2 as an intermediate, thereby enhancing H2O2 production. Benefiting from these advantages, In2S3/HTCC-2 can produce H2O2 at a rate of up to 1392 μmol g–1 h–1 in a pure aqueous system, which is 18.2 and 5.2 times higher than that of pure In2S3 and HTCC, respectively. Our work not only provides a novel synthesis method of new organic/inorganic heterojunction photocatalysts based on HTCC but also offers new insights into the potential mechanism of interfacial bonding of heterostructures to regulate the photocatalytic H2O2 production activity.

Designing heterogeneous photocatalysts to enhance the activity of photo-induced ch arge separation for efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous systems remains a significant challenge. A double Z-scheme Ag 3 PO 4 /MOF-In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction containing trace Ag compositing was rationally designed and prepared, and fully characterized. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments and Ultraviolet–Visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS) showed that the heterostructure expanded the surface area of single component, and had the highest absorption rate and the widest range of light. The presence of Ag in this heterostructure was demonstrated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which explained the strong resistance to photo corrosion and the highest current density exhibited by the composite in photocurrent response testing. The photocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic levofloxacin (LVX) was carried out, in which the degradation proportion of ABIS-Ⅲ sample was as high as 93.6 % within 90 min. Free radical scavenging assay and ESR experiment demonstrated that OH and O 2 – worked together to promote the degradation of LVX. Combined theoretical calculations with experimental results to reasonably construct a double Z-scheme to elaborate the carrier migration paths under light illumination. This novel double Z-scheme model heterojunction is expected to provide new ideas for the study of the photocatalytic mechanism of multiplicity complexes and the removal of antibiotic contaminants.

Oxygen-doped MoS 2 @In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 core-shell dual Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions are fabricated via two-step hydrothermal methods. In 2 S 3 and Bi 2 S 3 nanosheets grow on the outer surface of oxygen-doped MoS 2 spheres, and the tight interface between the spheres could ensure stable electron transfer. MoS 2 with oxygen defects could inhibit the recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. The unique core-shell structure increases the interface area and provides adequate surface reactive sites for the reactants. The resultant MoS 2 @In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 shows broad-spectrum response and excellent photothermal effect, which is beneficial to trigger the near-field temperature rise and promote the photocatalytic process. The MoS 2 @In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 exhibits excellent photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 973.42 μmol h −1 g −1 , and the degradation efficiency of tetracycline within 90 min is 99.6%, which is ∼ 10 times higher than that of pristine MoS 2 . It can be ascribed to the unique core-shell dual Z-scheme tandem heterojunction structure facilitates the transfer and spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and greatly prolongs the carrier lifetime. In addition, the long-term stability indicates the potential applications due to the core-shell dual Z-scheme tandem structure inhibiting the photocorrosion of sulfides.

MoS 2 -modified In 2 S 3 ( x wt.%MoS 2 -In 2 S 3 ) samples (0 ≤ x ≤ 20) were fabricated through a facile one-pot hydrothermal process. All In 2 S 3 samples modified by MoS 2 deliver an excellent Cr 6+ removal ability under visible-NIR-light-driven, and 5% MoS 2 -In 2 S 3 can reduce 20 mg/L Cr 6+ solution completely within 30 min with a trace photocatalyst concentration (0.27 mg/mL) which is 3.2-hold higher than that of single In 2 S 3 . Further investigations demonstrate that the loaded MoS 2 can not only enhance the absorption of light scope but also promote the interfacial electron transfer from In 2 S 3 to MoS 2 and then to Cr 6+ , thus greatly improving the Cr 6+ removal ability. ESR shows that the modifying of MoS 2 can accelerate the transformation of electrons from the In 2 S 3 to MoS 2 which results in that the intensity of O 2 − • significantly increased. PL, photocurrent, and EIS further identified that the modification of MoS 2 can greatly improve the charge carrier separation efficiency. The fabricated MoS 2 -In 2 S 3 samples also exhibit characteristic features such as stable and reducing Cr 6+ in the weak alkaline environment for the first time, which could always be a great challenge for wastewater purification in alkaline condition.

The efficient photocatalytic eliminate of persistent pollutants is crucial for advancing photocatalytic technology in environment applications. Constructing efficient heterojunction photocatalysts represents a key strategy for prolonging the lifetime of photo generated charge carriers and enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this study, an In 2 S 3 /TiO 2 -2:1 defect-heterojunction photocatalyst was developed, which exhibited exceptional degradation ability for recalcitrant contaminants including trenbolone acetate (TBA), acetaminophen, and phenol. Remarkably, over 99 % of TBA was degraded in 30 min, with comprehensive environmental risk assessment confirming minimal ecological impact from degradation intermediates. Transient fluorescence spectroscopy and transient surface photovoltage spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the relaxation process of photogenerated carriers. The results showed that the carrier relaxation time of In 2 S 3 /TiO 2 -2:1 defect-heterojunction photocatalyst was significantly prolonged, which effectively promoted the photocatalytic activity. This study provides valuable references for the design and development of high-performance defect-heterojunction photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic reduction represents a promising strategy for remediating toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution. MIL-68(In), a typical In-based metal-organic framework, is a potential photocatalyst for this purpose. However, its efficiency is often hampered by the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and a narrow visible-light response. To address these limitations, we fabricated a MIL-68(In)/In 2 S 3 n-n heterojunction by controllably growing In 2 S 3 on the MOF substrate, aiming to achieve highly efficient Cr(VI) reduction. Under optimized reaction conditions (pH = 4, temperature 25 °C, catalyst dosage 0.2 g·L −1 , initial Cr(VI) concentration 20 mg·L −1 ), the optimized MIL-68(In)/In 2 S 3 composite achieved a Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of 94.44 % within 30 min of visible light irradiation, significantly outperforming its individual components while exhibiting excellent stability and recyclability. A series of photoelectrochemical and radical trapping experiments were conducted to reveal the enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction. The formed heterojunction interface broadened visible-light absorption and exhibited excellent interfacial charge transfer capability and, driven by a built-in electric field, facilitated the spatial separation of charge carriers. Consequently, photogenerated electrons migrated from MIL-68(In) and accumulate on In 2 S 3 , directly reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Simultaneously, some electrons participated in the generation of superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ), which synergistically contributed to the reduction process. This work provided an effective heterojunction photocatalyst for Cr(VI) wastewater treatment and offered valuable insights for the design of MOF-based photocatalytic systems.
