The traditional foams can only block heat loss, and cannot effectively store and release heat energy on demand to extend the insulation time. In this work, the paraffin-rich monolayer microcapsules were prepared using negatively charged phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as the emulsifier of Pickering emulsion. The positive chitosan was assembled on the surface of the monolayer microcapsules through an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly method to prepare the bilayer microcapsules. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) was used as the dispersive medium of bilayer microcapsules and the gel skeleton to prepare phase change foam through freeze-drying. The foams exhibited excellent water resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The double-shell structure of chitosan/CNF microcapsules and the capillary action of KGM foam could effectively inhibit paraffin leakage. Moreover, the paraffin content of KCCP-4 foam was as high as 72.7 %, and the enthalpy of melting and crystallization were as high as 149 J/g and 146 J/g, respectively. The thermal conductivity and infrared thermal imaging results demonstrated that the KCCP-4 foam had excellent thermal insulation and energy storage properties. This study provides a simple and effective design strategy for the application of thermal insulation and energy storage foams in smart textiles.

The development of active food packaging films has become an important area of research because of the increasing demand for extending the shelf life of perishable foods. In this study, we developed a novel active food film comprising konjac glucomannan (KGM) and xanthan gum (XG) embedded with soy protein isolate (SPI)–tannic acid–iron (STFe) complexes. In detail, the STFe complexes were prepared through covalent interactions and polyphenol–metal ion coordination to enhance the functional properties of SPI. The KGM and XG matrix was selected owing to its excellent film-forming properties and ability to generate a stable, flexible, and transparent film. The integration of STFe complexes into the KGM/XG film enhanced the functional properties of the resulting film, which displayed exceptional properties, including barrier effects (water vapor permeability: 4.13 g mm/m 2 day kPa), mechanical strength (tensile strength: 20.30 MPa, elongation at break: 65.24%), ultraviolet-shielding capability (>90%), degradability (5 days in soil), antioxidative (>80%), and antimicrobial (>99%) properties. Additionally, we revealed that the film can effectively prolong the storage period of blueberries and maintain their freshness for 15 days. Thus, this film represents a promising approach to food preservation and suitable for the development of sustainable food packaging.

A thorough understanding of the lignin–carbohydrate complex (LCC) structure has a significant meaning in the high-value utilization of lignocellulose. In this work, the complex (DHPKGC) was obtained by an addition reaction between konjac glucomannan (KGM) and quinone methides generated in the synthesis of dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) to simulate the formation of LCCs. The effect of pH on the prepared DHPKGC was investigated. The structure of the DHPKGC was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR),13C-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C-NMR), and two-dimensional Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (2D HSQC NMR) analyses. The results indicated the pH of 4.0 was conducive to the polymerization reaction between DHPs and oxidized KGM by the TEMPO/NaClO/NaBr system. In addition, the resultant DHPKGC was connected by benzyl ester linkages. Overall, this study aims to gain greater insight into the process of LCC formation in plants.

A stimuli-responsive drug delivery system is developed for controlled delivery of curcumin (Cur) and chemo-photothermal therapy of breast cancer (BC). Cur is first loaded into mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (mPDA NPs) by π-π stacking, and then the Cur loaded mPDA NPs (mPDA NPs@Cur) are encapsulated in the hydrogels prepared through the crosslinking of oxidized konjac glucomannan (oxKGM) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Owing to the pH-sensitivity of the hydrogels and the outstanding photothermal conversion capability of mPDA NPs, the release of Cur from the hydrogels can be greatly accelerated in acidic media upon near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Cytotoxicity assay indicates that the hydrogels have significant cytotoxicity against murine breast tumor cell 4 T1 while the drug-free hydrogels (oxKGM/CMCS/mPDA NPs) show good biocompatibility. In addition, the hyperthermia generated upon NIR irradiation can lead to the apoptosis of cancer cells, achieving chemo-photothermal combination therapy of BC. Release kinetics study reveals that the release of Cur from the hydrogels follows zero-order model.

The fabrication of scaffolds capable of the sustained release of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to promote angiogenesis in long time remains a challenge in tissue engineering. Here, we report a facile approach for effectively fabricating a bioactive scaffold that gradually releases VEGF to promote angiogenesis. The scaffold was fabricated by coating polydopamine (PDA) on a konjac glucomannan (KGM) scaffold, followed by the surface immobilization of VEGF with PDA. The resulting VEGF-PDA/KGM scaffold, with a porous and interconnected microstructure (392 μm pore size with 84.80 porosity), combined the features of long-term biodegradability (10 weeks with 51 % degradation rate), excellent biocompatibility, and sustained VEGF release for up to 21 days. The bioactive VEGF-PDA/KGM scaffold exhibited multiple angiogenic activities over time, as confirmed by in vivo and in vitro experiments. For example, the scaffold significantly promoted the attachment and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and the formation of vascular tubes in vitro . Moreover, the in vivo results demonstrated the formation and maturation of blood vessels after subcutaneous implantation in rats for four weeks. This promising strategy is a feasible approach for producing bioactive materials that can induce angiogenesis in vivo . These findings provide a new avenue for designing and fabricating biocompatible and long-term biodegradable scaffolds for sustained VEGF release to facilitate angiogenesis.

Hydrogel is an effective surface radioactive decontamination technology. However, traditional colloid decontaminants face long curing duration and low decontamination rate issues. A peelable hydrogel coating composed of carrageenan, konjac glucan, and graphene oxide (GO) with excellent film-forming performance and decontamination efficiency was explored in this study. The results showed that the GO was effectively dispersed inside the hydrogel, improving the crosslink density and thermal stability of the hydrogel by forming hydrogen bonds with polysaccharide molecules. The GO can effectively enhance the decontamination performance of the hydrogel. For stainless steel, ceramic, glass, and rubber surfaces, the decontamination rates of the hydrogel for 30 min were 96.95 %, 87.6 %, 96.27 %, and 74.5 %, respectively. Furthermore, the decontamination effect was stable to temperature. For cement surfaces, the hydrogel could reach a maximum decontamination rate of 70.68 % after 24 h. The decontamination efficiency of hydrogel was affected by porosity, surface roughness, and GO addition. Moreover, the characterization results of XPS, FT-IR, and SEM/EDS showed that the decontamination process of the composite hydrogel may involve surface wetting, ion diffusion, electrostatic attraction, and physical entanglement. In conclusion, the as-prepared hydrogel has been demonstrated as a green, cost-effective surface decontaminant, which has great potential in the field of nuclear industry fields and environmental remediation.

This research explores the development of a polysaccharide-based nanogel by modifying chitosan (Cs) and konjac glucomannan (KGM). By introducing acyl groups, the water solubility of Cs was improved, while irradiation treatment and carboxymethylation modified the molecular weight distribution and viscosity of KGM, enhancing their suitability in nanogel formulations. The nanogel synthesis was optimized, the L ACs/CKGM8 nanogel (1:1) exhibited a positive surface charge, smaller and more uniform particle size, low aggregation, and high yield. Moreover, the inclusion of Rosa roxburghii Tratt polyphenols (RP) reduced the particle size and improved the structural integrity of nanogel (NG). The RP-loaded NG exhibited excellent encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 76.64% and a loading capacity (LC) of 56.99% for RP. The controlled RP release in simulated gastrointestinal conditions suggests these nanogels may improve oral polyphenol delivery system performance.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM), a common food hydrocolloid widely used in the food industries, has broad biological activities, but its targeted effects on gut microbiota remain unclear. In this study, we used feces microbiota from 30 healthy volunteers, conducted an in vitro fermentation, employed multi-omics analysis to characterize the effect of KGM on the gut microbiota, and performed a stepwise culture system to investigate its microbial interactions. KGM suppressed the opportunistic pathogen (unclassified Enterobacteriaceae) and the accumulation of branched-chain fatty acids, p-cresol, sulfides, and indole. In contrast, KGM enriched the proliferation of some potentially beneficial bacteria ( Faecalibacterium and Parabacteroides ) and the accumulation of short-chain fatty acids, as well as volatile organic metabolites, such as butanoic acid propyl ester. Notably, F. prausnitzii and P. distasonis were specifically enriched, but neither could utilize KGM directly. The primary degrader, such as Bacteroides ovatus , can degrade KGM and promote the growth of F. prausnitzii and P. distasonis . Our findings offer novel insights into KGM-microbiota interactions while establishing a scientific foundation for developing KGM-based functional foods targeting gut health enhancement.

Conventional non-degradable petroleum-based packaging films cause serious food safety and white environment pollution problems. Thus, a series of novel konjac glucomannan (KGM)/zein (KZ) films with different chain lengths and concentrations of fatty acids were prepared using a solution casting method in this paper. Effects of stearic acid and lauric acid on the rheological properties of the film-forming solutions, structure, mechanical properties and water barrier abilities of KZ film were systematically studied. The apparent viscosities analysis indicated that all the film-forming solutions were typical non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids and KGM/Zein/fatty acid (KZ-FA) film solutions exhibited higher apparent viscosities than KZ film solution at the test FA concentration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed that hydrogen bonds were the main intermolecular interactions among KGM, Zein and fatty acids. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that the incorporation of fatty acids enhanced the thermal stabilities and crystallinities of KZ film. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope results revealed that the surface morphologies and roughness of KZ film were significantly affected after adding FAs. The rougher and more irregular surfaces were observed in the KZ films with stearic acid. Moreover, KZ film with 0.4% stearic acid exhibited higher surface hydrophobicity, mechanical, water resistance and water vapor barrier properties than other KGM-based films. These results suggested that KZ films with appropriate types and concentrations of fatty acids are promising food packaging films for the required properties.

κ-Carrageenan (CRG)/konjac glucomannan (KGM) composite gels have promising applications in food texture modification and drug delivery, but are limited by poor mechanical strength. This study investigated the effects of KGM concentration and moisture content on the mechanical properties of these gels. The results show that increasing KGM concentration combined with moisture regulation substantially enhances the mechanical strength of the gels. At a KGM concentration of 0.6% and 60% water loss, the CRG/KGM gels exhibited maximum shear force and tensile strength, increasing 20-fold and 33-fold, respectively, compared to pure CRG gels. Furthermore, the resistance to deformation in the composite gels demonstrated a positive correlation with both KGM concentration and moisture content. Microstructural analyses showed that while KGM did not alter the crystalline structure type within the gels, it promoted cross-linking between CRG and KGM, resulting in a denser gel network with lower water mobility. Scanning electron microscopy further illustrated that increased KGM concentration enhanced the density and cross-linking strength of the gel network, whereas reduced water content contributed to a more compact gel structure. The interplay of these factors improved the mechanical properties of the composite gels. This study provides valuable insights for the rational design of polysaccharide gels.

This study develops novel antimicrobial camellia oil composite films based on konjac glucomannan (KGM) and κ-carrageenan (KC) incorporated with a curcumin (CUR)-loaded camellia oil nanoemulsion to address food packaging safety and sustainability. The composite solutions and films were systematically characterized. The results demonstrate that the integration of KGM significantly enhanced the rheological characteristics of the composite solution, while also improving the hydrophilicity of the resulting composite film. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that 0.4% KGM elevated the maximum thermal degradation temperature to 250.23 °C, significantly enhancing thermal stability. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses further demonstrated that KGM and KC established a stabilizing network structure through hydrogen bonding interactions. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that KGM concentrations between 0.1% and 0.3% promoted uniform emulsion droplet dispersion and a smooth film surface. It is noteworthy that when the concentration of KGM was 0.1%, the composite film showed a zone of inhibition of 4.64 mm against Escherichia coli and 4.67 mm for Staphylococcus aureus , which were significantly larger than those of other formulations. In summary, this research presents a theoretical framework designed to enhance the development of high-performance, multifunctional antimicrobial packaging materials, with the objective of fostering sustainable food practices.

The cryoprotective effects of deacetylated konjac glucomannan (DKGM) on gluten and its components in frozen dough remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of DKGM with varying degrees of deacetylation (DD) on the structural stability of gluten and its components during freeze–thaw (FT) cycles. Compared with konjac glucomannan, DKGM effectively alleviated the gluten structural “depolymerization–aggregation” process during FT cycles, with DK2 (DD, 50.21%) exhibiting the optimal cryoprotective effect. The DK2 group retained higher noncovalent interactions and disulfide bonds during FT cycles, thereby stabilizing the gluten structure. Studies on glutenin and gliadin suggest that glutenin is more susceptible to FT damage. DK2 provided the best protection for glutenin, whereas DK3 (DD, 66.61%) provided the most effective protection for gliadin. These distinct effects were likely attributable to differences in the particle size and steric hindrance of DKGM, as well as the inherent structural characteristics of the protein components.
