Ultrathin LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase for stable long-life cycling stabilization of lithium metal anodes

Di Zhang,Pengfei Lv,Wei Qin,Yuanhua He

Lithium-metal anodes have attracted widespread attention owing to their high specific capacity. However, they still suffer from poor stability under high-rate cycling and safety issues, which are mainly induced by the significant growth of Li dendrites and the collapse of the solid electrolyte interphase during extended cycling. Effective protective coatings can withstand severe environmental corrosion during handling and cycling. In this study, we develop a convenient and controllable surface fluorination process to develop a dense and uniform ultrathin lithium fluoride (LiF) protective coating on the Li metal surface by vacuum evaporation . Advanced comprehensive analyses demonstrate that the 200 nm-thick LiF protective coating provides sufficient Li ion transmission channels for efficient transport. This reinforces the structural integrity to withstand volume changes during Li plating/stripping. The highly conformal LiF protective coating minimizes corrosion reactions with carbonate electrolytes and inhibits dendrite formation. Dendrite-free deposition is realized at a high current density of 3 mA cm – 2 . LiF@Li|LiFePO 4 full cells with a 200 nm LiF-coated Li anode exhibit up to 85.31% capacity retention over 600 cycles. Stable Li deposition is achieved for 1200 h under lean electrolyte conditions using a 200-nm LiF-coated Li anode. The developed protective coating shows excellent stabilizing effects on Li anodes and is expected to facilitate the optimization and practical application of Li metal anodes with sufficient interphase stability.

Electrode Engineering of Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodetectors Using a Self-Assembled Island-like LiF Interfacial Layer

Ya Wang,Huicheng Hu,Xi Ran,Long Chen,Mengxuan Yu,Peilin Liu,Jungang He,Jianbing Zhang,Liang Gao,Jiang Tang,Xinzheng Lan

Lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dot (CQD) photodetectors (PDs) are promising devices for low-cost, high-performance, and large-area infrared imaging. To achieve commercial applications, it is necessary not only to further improve performance but also to achieve high stability. In this study, the uncontrolled migration of the Au element into the PbS CQD layers was identified. An interface passivation approach was employed, which involved the implementation of a self-assembled island-like LiF interfacial layer between the PbS-EDT layer and the Au electrode. The approach effectively mitigated the detrimental migration of the Au element and substantively enhanced the stability of PbS CQD PDs. At the same time, this strategy substantially suppressed the dark current in the PbS CQD PDs due to interface passivation, which led to more than 2-fold improvements of the specific detectivity to 4.8 × 1012 Jones. A PbS CQD photodiode imager based on the thin-film transistor readout circuit was finally fabricated. Penetration imaging and material discrimination imaging were demonstrated successfully by the PbS CQD imager.

In Situ Constructing of LiF-Organic Composite SEI for Ultra-Stable Li Anodes in Li-Cl2 Batteries

Zihui Liu,Wenting Feng,Jianhang Yang,Xinru Wei,Yunbo Zhang,Chenyu Ma,Yiming Sun,Han Wang,Haolin Wu,Debin Kong,Changming Mao

The escalating demand for high-energy-density storage has intensified research on Li-Cl 2 batteries, which exhibit ultrahigh energy density but suffer from rapid failure due to the poor ionic conductivity and mechanical fragility of naturally formed LiCl interphases on Li metal. Here, we design an organic–inorganic hybrid protective layer (Li 3 Sb/LiF/PVDF, denoted as LSLP@Li) via in situ interfacial engineering. This designed layer effectively isolates the Li anode from corrosive SOCl 2 electrolyte and suppresses parasitic reactions. The synergistic Li 3 Sb/LiF phase ensures high ionic conductivity and guides uniform Li deposition, while the flexible PVDF matrix accommodates cycling-induced volumetric strain. As a result, the LSLP@Li anode maintains structural integrity for over 48 h in corrosive electrolyte (<2 h for bare Li), enabling Li-Cl 2 batteries to maintain over 400 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 . The study advances the understanding of naturally formed LiCl layer on SOCl 2 -based battery and provide valuable strategy to achieve the interfacial stability.

Sintering behavior, flexural strength, thermal conductivity and dielectric properties of novel Y2O3-LiF co-doped AlN ceramics

Deyin Liang,Xiaoqiang Li,Wenlong Yin,Chaoyang Zhang,Bo You,Shengquan Yu

This study systematically investigates the influence of Y 2 O 3 content on the microstructure, thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and dielectric properties of AlN ceramics co-doped with 2 wt% LiF. XRD and Rietveld refinement confirmed the hexagonal crystal structure for all compositions, with the Y2F2 sample exhibiting a distinct lattice contraction. SEM analysis revealed a steady decrease in grain size and a morphological evolution of the secondary phase at grain boundaries from a discontinuous to a continuous state with increasing Y 2 O 3 . TEM further demonstrated that the Y2F2 composition yielded the most favorable microstructure, characterized by minimal interface defects and a well-ordered transition zone at the grain boundary triple junctions. Consequently, the sample with 2 wt% Y 2 O 3 (Y2F2) delivered optimal overall performance: a thermal conductivity of 231.26 W m −1  K −1 , a bending strength of 302 MPa, a dielectric constant of 8.396 (at 1 MHz) with a low loss factor of 1.4 × 10 −3 , and an activation energy of 1.04 eV. These results identify 2 wt% as the critical Y 2 O 3 content that balances oxygen gettering and lattice incorporation, leading to a synergistic optimization of properties.

LiF/NaF-rich interphase enables low N/P ratio sodium metal batteries with wide operating temperature range

Jinting Chen,Jiayi Shang,Qing Chang,Long Wang,Ruiqi Yang,Han Wang,Jing Zhou,Yu Cao

Sodium metal batteries (SMBs) are regarded as compelling energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity and the abundance of sodium (Na). However, SMBs with cycling stability under extreme climatic conditions remain highly challenging, due to the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite growth, which is further aggravated when operating under low negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P) conditions. Herein, a high-energy-density and wide-temperature SMB is realized using a hetero-salt-regulated electrolyte strategy. Specifically, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) is introduced as a hetero-salt additive into a dual-salt ether electrolyte to stabilize the Na metal anodes. Li + competitively coordinates with solvent molecules, causing the Na + solvation structure to shift toward an anion-rich configuration. The formed anion-dominated solvation shell promotes the formation of a mechanically robust and electronically insulating LiF/NaF-rich SEI, which in turn suppresses interfacial side reactions and effectively mitigates dendrite growth. Consequently, the assembled Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NVPF) SMBs (N/ P  = 4:1) achieve a high energy density of 335.90 Wh kg −1 (with power density of 26,650.00 W kg −1 ) at 25 °C (based on total mass of the active materials on anode and cathode) and maintain stable operation across a wide temperature range of −40 to 45 °C. This work expedites the development of SMBs for energy-intensive applications in extreme environments. Download: Download high-res image (228KB) Download: Download full-size image

Ionic covalent organic frameworks triggered efficient synergy: Li+ de-solvation and the formation of LiF-rich interphase

Weifeng Zhang,Guoxing Jiang,Wenwu Zou,Longhai Zhang,Shulian Li,Shengguang Qi,Xiujun Wang,Zhiming Cui,Huiyu Song,Li Du,Zhenxing Liang

The parasitic side reaction between the electrolyte and the lithium metal (Li 0 ) forms an unstable heterogeneous interphase, causing the poor reversibility of Li plating/stripping. The rational design of protection layer on Li 0 anode is imperative to inhibit side reactions and achieve fast Li  +  transport on the Li 0 /electrolyte interface. Herein, by firstly coordinating the bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion (FSI − ) to the protection layer, a layer consisting of 2D ionic vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (ivCOF-FSI) is proposed to stabilize the Li 0 /electrolyte interface. As demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, the triazine group in the cationic framework is identified to promote Li + de-solvation process while partial FSI − prefers to form LiF-rich interphase. Attributed to these superiorities, the ivCOF-FSI layer endows the Li 0 /electrolyte interface with high reversibility in carbonate-based electrolytes by simultaneously suppressing the side effect and achieving rapid Li + transfer. Combined with the high stability of solid-liquid interface, the LiFePO 4 full cells with ivCOF-FSI/Li anode display enhanced cyclability under a high cathode loading of 9.4 mg cm −2 and a low negative/positive capacity ratio of 5. This work provides a novel route for stabilizing the interfacial chemistry of solid-liquid interface, aiming to pave the way for the next-generation high-energy-density batteries .

Reconstructing the Li+ solvation structure in quasi-solid polymer electrolyte for stable lithium metal batteries

Shuangshuang Zhu,Zhenxi Li,Shilun Gao,Tianhui Cheng,Ruijie Guo,Dandan Yang,Wei Niu,Junli Yu,Huabin Yang,Peng-Fei Cao

Quasi-solid polymer electrolytes (QSPEs) have been attracted significant attentions due to their benefits for simultaneously improved safety and energy density of batteries. Developing electrolytes capable of forming a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is a great challenge for QSPE-based lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, unlike previously reports that the reconstruction of Li + solvation structures in QSPE requires time-consuming bottom-up polymer synthesis, in current study, a facile approach has been developed to reconstruct the Li + solvation structures in QSPE by adjustment of the salt concentrations. The high proportion of Li + -anion complexes can effectively accelerate interfacial Li + diffusion, mitigate the decompositions of organic solvents and induces the formation of a LiF-rich SEI layer, contributing to suppressed Li-dendrite growth. As a result, the Li/QSPE-3/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell performs an ultralong lifespan with capacity retention of 77.4% over 3000 cycles at 1 C. With a high-voltage LiCoO 2 cathode, the cell can stably cycle over 200 cycles at 25 °C (capacity retention of ∼83.8%). With accelerated ion transport dynamics due to the reconstructed Li + solvation structure, the QSPE-3 (the salt concentration is 3 M) is applicable in a wide temperature range. The Li/QSPE-3/LFP full cell exhibits 58.1% and 102.6% of discharge capacity at −15 and 90 °C, respectively, compared to those operated at 25 °C. This study demonstrates a facile yet effective approach on enhancing electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability, enabling the LMBs with simultaneously enhanced safety and high energy density.

Exploring the effect of lithium halide artificial SEI on the electrochemical performance of lithium metal batteries

Xintai Xie,Jinbiao Chen,Xuanyi Chen,Zhicong Shi

The urgent need for high-energy–density rechargeable batteries is driving lithium (Li) metal as a promising anode material. However, the conventional solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on lithium metal suffers from elevated interfacial impedance, poor mechanical properties, and non-uniform Li + flux. Previously, LiF has been proven to be an effective component of the SEI protecting lithium metal. However, this is a rarely reported application of LiCl and LiBr in SEI. Herein, we design SEI containing lithium halide in different ratios (LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 , LiF 0.33 Cl 0.33 Br 0.33 , LiCl, LiBr) to investigate the action laws of lithium halide in SEI. It has been shown that the performance of SEI containing lithium halide against lithium anode increases with the LiF content in the SEI. The higher the proportion of LiF in SEI, the better the cycle life and stability of Li-Li symmetric cells, and the higher the initial capacity and the capacity retention of LFP-Li full cells. The symmetric cell with LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 @Li has the smallest average polarization voltage (about ± 30 mV) and long cycle life of up to 1000 h. LiFePO 4 ||LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 @Li cells have the highest initial capacity (127.4 mAh/g), and still had 83.6 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2C.

Regulating interfacial adsorption via hierarchical dual-coating for homogeneous LiF-rich SEI and long-cycling Si/C anodes

Na Hong,Nian Li,Yanping Song,Shuai Han,Shudong Zhang,Zhao Li,Jun Kang,Cui Liu,Shihao Wang,Min Xi,Yongfeng Wang,Zhenyang Wang

High-capacity silicon/carbon composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries face rapid capacity degradation from extreme volume changes due to conventional organic-dominated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) lacking mechanical/ionic stability. Constructing robust inorganic SEI (e.g., LiF-dominated interphases) requires synergistic control of electrolyte interactions at the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) and stress-adaptive interfacial architectures. Herein, a hierarchical dual-coating strategy integrating polyaniline (PANi) and laser-induced graphene (LIG) on SiO x anodes addresses this challenge. PANi layer selectively enriches fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC) at the IHP via dipole-dipole interaction, enabling preferential FEC reduction at 1.3 V (vs. Li/Li + ) to form LiF-dominated SEI. Theoretical calculations confirm higher FEC adsorption density and stronger adsorption energy on the hierarchically dual-coated SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 (−0.33 eV) versus bare SiO x (−0.09 eV). Meanwhile, LIGʼs 3D porous conductive scaffold dissipates stress, sustaining structural integrity under repeated expansion. The optimized SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 anode achieves 1812.5 mAh g −1 initial capacity with 90.5 % initial Coulombic efficiency at 0.1 A g −1 and retains 87.7 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 , demonstrating exceptional electrochemical stability. Post-cycling analyses further validate the homogeneity of LiF-rich SEI, robust mechanical resilience, and exceptional electrode integrity. This atomic-scale IHP regulation, harmonized with macro-scale stress engineering, offers scalable strategies for silicon anodes in high-energy-density batteries.

Interface engineering and efficiency improvement of monolayer graphene–silicon solar cells by inserting an ultra-thin LiF interlayer

Dikai Xu,Xuegong Yu,Lijian Zuo,Deren Yang

Graphene–silicon (Gr–Si) Schottky junction solar cells have recently attracted intensive attention as candidates for low-cost photovoltaic devices. However, the efficiency of Gr–Si solar cells still needs further improvement. In this study, we have introduced an ultra-thin LiF layer between the Si and aluminum (Al) back electrode of Gr–Si solar cells. It is found that carrier recombination at the back surface is significantly suppressed, resulting directly in the improvement of external quantum efficiency (EQE) of devices in the long wavelength range of 800–1100 nm. Moreover, the back contact resistance is greatly reduced, and therefore the fill factor (FF) of devices is greatly improved. As a result, the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.25% has been obtained for a pristine Gr–Si solar cell, which is further improved to 10.61% after chemical doping. These results pave a new way to the fabrication of high efficiency Gr–Si solar cells.

In-situ construction of Li-Ag/LiF composite layer for long cycled all-solid-state Li metal battery

Qianxiao Fan,Wendi Zhang,Yilong Jin,Dongmei Zhang,Xianglong Meng,Wanxiong Peng,Jinhui Wang,Jinshan Mo,Kai Liu,Lehao Liu,Meicheng Li

All-solid-state lithium batteries employing sulfide solid electrolyte are promising candidates for next generation lithium batteries. Nevertheless, the unstable interface of sulfide solid electrolyte and Li metal has limited the lifespan of sulfide solid state lithium metal batteries. Herein, a composite protection layer composed of Li-Ag/LiF (LAF) is formed on Li metal surface by the in-situ reaction of silver-fluoride (AgF) and Li metal to solve the instability issue of the Li 6 PS 5 Cl/Lithium interface. The Li-Ag particles act as nucleation sites for Li deposition and LiF can avoid the growth of lithium dendrites. The density function theory (DFT) calculation results show the lithiophilic of Li-Ag alloys and high interfacial energy of LiF/Li 6 PS 5 Cl interface, proving the superiority of the LAF protection layer. The critical current density of the Li-LAF/ Li 6 PS 5 Cl/ LAF-Li symmetric battery is 1.6 mA cm −2 and the battery achieved a long lifespan of over 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and 0.1mAh cm −2 at room temperature. In addition, a high discharge capacity of 139.1mAh/g is obtained in the LiNbO3@LiCoO2/ Li6PS5Cl/ LAF-Li full cell. This work provides a feasible strategy for the interface modification of sulfide all-solid-state Li metal batteries.

K2C2O4-Modified PVDF Electrolytes for Lithium-Polymer Batteries: Synergistic LiF Interphase Formation and Mechanical Reinforcement for Dendrite Suppression

Lingyi Kong,Zhenjiang Du,Beili Pang,Can Cui,Jianguang Feng,Hongzhou Dong,Lingyan Wang,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolytes are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and ease of processing. However, PVDF chain scission during cycling often leads to battery failure. This study introduces a straightforward strategy for modifying PVDF using potassium oxalate (K 2 C 2 O 4 ). The resulting composite gel polymer electrolyte (CGPEK-X) facilitates the pre-formation of LiF, which enhances lithium-ion conductivity and promotes uniform lithium deposition. Moreover, the improved mechanical integrity of the composite effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth. When integrated into LiFePO 4 /Li cells, the optimized K 2 C 2 O 4 -doped system demonstrates stable cycling over 200 cycles at room temperature, achieving a discharge capacity of 120.3 mAh g −1 at 1°C. This work presents a novel approach to engineering PVDF-based electrolytes with balanced mechanical and electrochemical properties, offering valuable insights for the development of high-performance lithium-polymer batteries.
