MgH₂ is recognized as one of the most promising solid hydrogen storage materials; however, its practical application is confined by sluggish kinetics and stable thermodynamics. In this study, fibrous VNbO₅ was synthesized via electrospinning and subsequently introduced into MgH₂ through ball milling technology to enhance hydrogen storage properties. The addition of 7 wt% VNbO₅ give rise to the obvious decline in the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH₂, from 322.2 °C to 200.2 °C. At 300 °C, the modified composite exhibited rapid dehydrogenation, releasing approximately 6.43 wt% hydrogen within 8.1 min. Moreover, the fully dehydrogenated sample demonstrated the ability to absorb hydrogen at room temperature and absorbed 6 wt% H₂ at 200 °C within 16 s. The desorption activation energy of the MgH₂-7 wt% VNbO₅ composite was determined to be 75.32 ± 1.44 kJ/mol, representing an approximate 48.1% reduction compared to the 145.25 ± 2.14 kJ/mol of pure MgH₂. Furthermore, the system possessed remarkable cyclic stability, retaining 95.5% of hydrogen storage amount after 20 cycles. During the reaction process, VNbO₅ decomposed into low-valence state active catalytic species, including Nb₂O₅, NbO, Nb, VO₂, and V. The in-situ generation of this multi-element, multi-valence chemical environment synergistically enhanced hydrogen storage performance of MgH₂.

The practical applications of MgH2 as a high-density hydrogen carrier depend heavily on efficient and low-cost catalysts to accelerate the dehydriding/hydriding reactions at moderate temperatures. In the present work, this issue is addressed by synthesizing Nb-doped TiO2 solid-solution-type catalysts that dramatically improve the hydrogen sorption performances of MgH2. The catalyzed MgH2 can absorb 5 wt % of H2 even at room temperature for 20 s, release 6 wt % of H2 at 225 °C within 12 min, and the complete dehydrogenation can be achieved at 150 °C under a dynamic vacuum atmosphere. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Nb doping introduces Nb 4d orbitals with stronger interaction with H 1s into the density of states of TiO2. This considerably enhances both the adsorption and dissociation ability of the H2 molecule on the catalysts surface and the hydrogen diffusion across the specific Mg/Ti(Nb)O2 interface. The successful implementation of solid solution-type catalysts in MgH2 offers a demonstration and inspiration for the development of high-performance catalysts and solid-state hydrogen storage materials.

Due to the slow hydrogen release kinetics and high hydrogen release temperature, the application of MgH 2 is subject to many restrictions. In this paper, a rod-shaped catalyst assembled from Ni/NiO nanoparticles was synthesized. During the hydrogen release process, the interfacial reaction induces the in-situ generation of Mg 2 Ni, thereby providing a rapid hydrogen transport channel. Compared with pure Ni catalysts, the Ni/NiO heterojunction can reduce the initial desorption temperature, the peak desorption temperature, and the complete hydrogen release temperature of MgH 2 to 191 °C, 259 °C, and 275 °C, respectively. In addition, the reversible hydrogen storage performance, it shows an initial capacity of 6.38 wt%, and the capacity retention rate after 20 cycles is 94.12%. Kinetic analysis indicated that the activation energy of dehydrogenation was reduced to 93.78 kJ mol −1 , confirming that the synergistic effect of the Ni/NiO heterointerface and Mg 2 Ni generation jointly accelerated the hydrogen release kinetics. Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is hampered by sluggish kinetics despite its high capacity. Here, we report a solvent-free, single-step mechanochemical strategy that drives the in situ reconstruction of titanium oxide acetylacetonate into a self-derived, high-coverage TiO 2 nanolayer on MgH 2 surfaces. Unlike conventional discrete particle catalysts, this surface-anchored TiO 2 phase maximizes the interfacial contact area. Kinetic analysis establishes a direct link between this high-coverage interfacial topology and nucleation-governed kinetics: the ubiquitous distribution of interfacial active sites shifts the dehydrogenation mechanism to be primarily controlled by 2D nucleation and growth, while rehydrogenation is initially driven by rapid surface-chemisorption. Consequently, the composite unlocks exceptional kinetic activity at low temperatures, releasing 4 wt.% H 2 at 186°C and absorbing 5.8 wt.% H 2 at 26°C within 10 h, retaining 99% capacity over 100 cycles. Density functional theory elucidates the atomistic origin of this enhancement: the unique TiO 2 /MgH 2 band alignment channels electrons from hydrogen vacancies into Ti 3 d states. This interfacial electronic polarization significantly stabilizes hydrogen vacancies and lowers the desorption activation barrier to 81 kJ mol −1 , validating the interface-dominated kinetic model. This work demonstrates that interfacial topological engineering via in situ reconstruction is a critical pathway to overcoming the kinetic bottlenecks of solid-state hydrogen storage.

In this study, a mixed cerium-niobium oxide, CeNbO x , was successfully synthesized and combined with MgH 2 through high-energy ball milling to enhance its hydrogen storage performance. The addition of 10 wt% CeNbO x significantly reduced the beginning dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 209.7 °C, representing a substantial decrease of 87.9 °C compared to the ball-milled counterpart without the additive. At 100 °C, the CeNbO x -doped composite absorbed 5.2 wt% of H 2 within 5 min, and at 300 °C, it released 6.3 wt% of H 2 in 10 min. Various characterization techniques, such as TEM and XPS, revealed the in-situ formation of lower valence CeH 2.53 and Nb-based active species (Nb, NbO 2 , and NbH 2 ) derived from CeNbO x during the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation process. These compounds can act as reactive sites that efficiently facilitate the adsorption and dissociation of H 2 molecules in MgH 2 . This study offers a valuable strategy for catalyst design aimed at developing high-performance composites for hydrogen storage.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a highly promising solid-state hydrogen storage material, but its application is hindered by sluggish kinetics and high operating temperatures. Currently, alloying and catalysis are effective strategies for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 , but the designing of a hydrogen ab/desorption system which synergistically combines them remains a challenge. Herein, Mg Al solid solution and intermetallic compounds (Al species), and a spherical Nb-doped TiO 2 (Nb-TiO 2 ) were introduced into Mg/MgH 2 to enhance the hydrogen storage performance. Al species significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation thermodynamics of Mg 90 Al 10 - 15 at.% Nb-TiO 2 , while improving the hydrogen ab/desorption kinetics of the composite synergistically with the Nb-TiO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the synergism of Al species and Nb-TiO 2 led to preferential adsorption of H atoms at the interfaces of Nb-TiO 2 and Mg 17 Al 12 , with abundant electron transfer. The dehydrogenation enthalpy ( ΔH ) of Mg 90 Al 10 - 15 at.% Nb-TiO 2 decreased from 80.86 (MgH 2 ) to 69.05 kJ/mol, while its hydrogen desorption apparent activation energy ( E a ) decreased from 146.40 (MgH 2 ) to 88.80 kJ/mol simultaneously. The composite could absorb 4.70 wt% H 2 within 2000 s at 200 °C and showed a dehydrogenation onset temperature of 209 °C. This work reveals a synergistic effect between alloying and catalysis, advancing both the performance enhancement strategies and the mechanistic understanding of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.

The hydrogen storage potential and cost-effectiveness of MgH2 have rendered it a desirable material for hydrogen storage. However, its application has been hindered by limitations in thermal stability and dehydrogenation kinetics. In this study, the carbon nanotube-Pd bifunctional catalyst was prepared by using hydrothermal and calcination technology, significantly improving the kinetics of Mg/MgH2 during hydrogen adsorption/desorption. The activation energy for the Mg@ CNTs-Pd was reduced to 42.73 kJ/mol, as determined by fitting the Avrami–Erofeev model with the Arrhenius equation. Additionally, the activation energy during dehydrogenation was found to be 73.98 kJ/mol based on the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov equation and the Arrhenius equation. It is worth noting that the dynamic enhancement persists even after 10 cycles. This groundbreaking research has paved the way for potential applications of MgH2 as a hydrogen storage material, providing it with broader development opportunities.

Magnesium-based materials are favored by researchers because of their high hydrogen storage capacity, but they cannot be put to daily use because of their more demanding reaction conditions. Recently, the method to improve the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 by catalyst doping has been widely investigated. In this paper, Co 3 O 4 catalysts were prepared by homogeneous precipitation method. It was demonstrated that the Co 3 O 4 catalyst could effectively improve the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . According to the experimental results, the dehydrogenation onset temperature of the MgH 2 +15 wt% Co 3 O 4 composite was about 200 °C, which was about 130 °C lower than that of pure MgH 2 , and the amount of dehydrogenation was 6.26 wt%. The dehydrogenation activation energy of the MgH 2 +15 wt% Co 3 O 4 composite was reduced to 89.13 kJ/mol, which was about 45.7% lower than that of pure MgH 2 . After complete dehydrogenation, the composites started to absorb hydrogen at 50 °C with 6.2 wt%, while the activation energy of reabsorption was also reduced to 47.97 kJ/mol. After 10 cycles of MgH 2 +15 wt% Co 3 O 4 composites, the hydrogen storage capacity of MgH 2 could still be maintained at 99%, which indicated that it had good cycling stability. It was confirmed by various characterizations that Co 3 O 4 was uniformly distributed on the MgH 2 matrix after ball milling . After the first reaction, Co 3 O 4 was converted to CoO, which was uniformly attached to the Mg/MgH 2 surface and stabilized during the cycling process, continuing to provide active sites for hydrogen.

In this work, layered boron nitride nanosheets loaded with fine nickel particles were synthesized by a solution chemical reduction method and introduced into MgH 2 . The best catalytic activity in kinetics has been found in Ni 70 @BN, the nickel particles of which are only 10–30 nm in size, showing homogenous dispersion state. Ni particles distributed on the surface of BN provided many active sites, which markedly improved the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The MgH 2 /Ni 70 @BN composite absorbs 5.34 wt% H 2 swiftly within 25 s at 125 °C and releases 6.21 wt% H 2 in 15 min at 300 °C. The dehydrogenation activation energy is reduced to 59.77 ± 3.96 kJ/mol, which is significantly lower than that of pure MgH 2 (145.08 kJ/mol). Moreover, BN acts as the aggregation preventer, thereby maintaining outstanding cycling performance of Ni 70 @BN modified MgH 2 even after 30 cycles. According to DFT calculations, the in-situ formed Mg 2 Ni is verified to reduce the barrier energy of (de)hydrogenation. Thus, the synergistic effect between BN and Mg 2 Ni(H 4 ) facilitates the “hydrogen pump” effect to accelerate the ad/desorption kinetics of Mg/MgH 2 . This work will attract more attention to the synergistic effect of 0D and 2D structures and supplies a new insight into the design of multi-phase catalysts.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) suffers from sluggish kinetics and high operational temperatures, hindering practical hydrogen storage. We pioneer a spatially decoupled catalytic strategy that assigns distinct roles to Ti 0 . 10 Zr 0 . 15 V 0 . 35 Cr 0 . 10 Ni 0 . 30 (TA) alloy (bulk diffusion promoter) and Pd/C (surface dissociation catalyst), overcoming the inherent coupling of rate-limiting steps in MgH 2 . This design achieves near-ambient absorption (4.56 wt% at 100 °C) and eliminates activation cycles—a milestone unattained by single-catalyst systems. Kissinger analysis confirms a 46.0% reduction in activation energy (78.8 kJ/mol) for the surface-limited step, directly validating the spatial separation of catalytic functions. Crucially, the composite retains 92.3% capacity after 30 cycles with negligible kinetic degradation (0.40% decay/cycle), eliminating the need for activation. This work establishes a spatially coupled catalytic mechanism that decouples surface and bulk processes, enabling a lower operating temperature for MgH 2 .

Two kinds of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on Co (II) and Fe (II) as metal ions and trimasic acid (TMA) as organic linker were synthesized. They were used to prepare corresponding MgH 2 -TM MOF (TM = Co, Fe) composites via ball-milling. X-ray diffraction analyses show the formation of Mg 2 Co and α-Fe phases in MgH 2 -TM MOF composites after decomposition. Both of the well dispersed Mg 2 Co and α-Fe nanoparticles exhibit considerable catalytic efficiency in accelerating the sorption kinetics of MgH 2 . The dehydrogenated MgH 2 -Fe MOF composite shows faster hydriding kinetics than the pure MgH 2 and MgH 2 -Co MOF. Meanwhile, the apparent dehydrogenation activation energy ( E d ) of the MgH 2 -Co MOF and MgH 2 -Fe MOF composites are 151.3 ± 9.4 and 142.3 ± 6.5 kJ/mol H 2 , both of which are lower than that of pure MgH 2 (181.4 ± 9.2 kJ/mol H 2 ). The improvement on the sorption kinetics of the MgH 2 -TM MOF powders is mainly attributed to the catalytic effects of nano-sized Mg 2 Co and α-Fe formed on the surface of Mg/MgH 2 particles.

Hydrogen storage materials are the primary solution for addressing safety concerns in hydrogen energy storage and transportation. Despite the advantages of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials, such as high capacity and good reversibility, their poor kinetic performances severely limit their practical applications. In this study, the synthesis of titanium nitride supported on carbon (TiN@C) was achieved through a controllable hydrothermal method , aiming to enhance the hydrogen storage performances of MgH 2 .With the catalytic action of TiN@C, MgH 2 could rapidly release over 6.0 wt% of hydrogen at 300 °C within 15 min, while the onset dehydrogenation temperature decreased to 226 °C. The dehydrogenated MgH 2 could reabsorb 5.80 wt% of hydrogen at 200 °C for 15 min with a reduced activation energy of 44.9 kJ·mol −1 , demonstrating excellent kinetic performance. Mechanism analysis revealed that the multiphase interface between MgH 2 (Mg) and TiN@C significantly improved the hydrogen desorption kinetics of materials, especially TiN and the in-situ formed TiH 2 were the main reasons for improving the hydrogen storage performance of materials.
