Manganese oxides are considered a highly promising anode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity, abundant sources, relatively low voltage hysteresis, nontoxic and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the practical application of these materials faces many challenges such as poor lifespan and serious volume variation during operation. Herein, MnO/Mn 3 O 4 –600 composite was obtained based on a single-step pyrolysis procedure from commercial manganese(II) oxalate dihydrate (MOD, C 2 H 4 MnO 6 ). The MnO/Mn 3 O 4 –600 anode exhibits an exceptionally high reversible capacity of 1041.8 mAh g −1 at the current density of 200 mA g −1 , and a remarkable lifespan at 1000 mA g −1 . The outstanding performance benefits from the formation of porous structures on nanoparticles, which not only mitigate volume changes and prevent the aggregation of internal MnO/Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles, but also enhance the ion diffusion. The in-depth insights into the (de)lithiated mechanism of the electrode are investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Moreover, when applied in a full cell, the MnO/Mn 3 O 4 –600 anode demonstrates exceptional electrochemical property.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is regarded as a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material with high capacity and abundant resources, while its large-scale application is limited because of the inherent thermodynamic and kinetic issues. In this study, a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Ni/MnO nanosphere catalyst (Ni/MnO@NC) was synthesized to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 by lowering the operating temperature and improving kinetic properties. Incorporation of 10 wt% Ni/MnO@NC lowered the onset dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 225.2 ℃ and reduced the dehydrogenation activation energy to 97.68 kJ/mol. At temperatures as low as 50 ℃, MgH 2 -Ni/MnO@NC composite achieved 2.92 wt% hydrogen absorption within 30 min. Moreover, the composite retains 97.4 % of its initial capacity after 30 cycles. Mechanistic analysis indicates that the superior hydrogen storage performance arises from synergistic catalysis among intermediate and derived phases, including the hydrogen pump effect of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 , enhancement of electron transfer by multivalent Mn, and suppression of MgH 2 particle aggregation and growth by nitrogen-doped carbon. These findings put forward a promising strategy to advance the practical application of MgH 2 in hydrogen storage systems.

Carbon-based fibrous supercapacitors (FSSCs) are promising power sources for wearable electronics, often compounding with transition metal oxides (TMOs) to improve energy density. However, conventional methods introducing TMOs onto exterior surfaces of carbon-based fibers typically degrade electrical transport and cycle stability. Herein, nanoconfined MnO@Mn 2 O 3 heterojunctions within carbon nanotube (CNT) (MOIC) composite FSSCs stabilized by Mn─O─C bonds, exhibiting record cycle stability with 95.7% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles and 89.4% after 50 000 cycles are reported. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm MnO@Mn 2 O 3 heterostructure, which arises through a partial phase transformation from MnO to Mn 2 O 3 , as further supported by density functional theory calculations. Mn─O─C chemical bonds, as verified through XPS, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and XANES analyses, facilitate 3D electron transport, enabling MOIC composite fiber superior electrical conductivity than CNT fiber. The nanoconfinement of Mn 2+ within CNTs, driven by capillary effects and electrostatic repulsion between protonated CNTs and Mn 2+ , preserves the clean exterior surfaces of CNTs. This configuration enables the successful wet-spinning of MOIC composite fibers with three times the tensile strength of fibers without nanoconfinement. This work opens new pathways for designing carbon/metal oxide hybridized supercapacitors for wearable energy storage applications.

Aqueous Zn-ion battery has emerged as one of the most prospective energy storage devices due to its low cost, high safety, and eco-friendliness. However, Zn-ion batteries are bottlenecked by significant capacity fading during long-term cycling and poor performance at high current rates. Here, we report an available cooperation of multivariate manganese oxides@carbon hybrids (MnO 2 /MnO@C and MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 @C) via a plasma-assisted design as an attractive Zn-ion cathode. Among them, the MnO 2 /MnO@C cathode exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 165 mAh g −1 over 200 cycles at a high rate of 0.5 A g −1 , and possesses great rate performance with high capacities of 110 and 100 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 0.8 and 1 A g −1 , respectively. The good cathode performance significantly results from the facile charge transfer and ions (Zn 2+ and H + ) insertion in the manganese oxides/carbon hybrids featuring phase stability behavior in the available cooperation of multivalence and carbon conductive substrates. This work will promote the Zn-manganese dioxide system for the design of low-cost and high-performance aqueous rechargeable Zn-ion batteries.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived materials have distinctive structures and conspicuous catalytic performance, making them extensively employed as catalysts in several fields. Herein, MnO/carbon nanofiber has been successfully generated by pyrolyzing Mn-MOF/bacterial cellulose (BC) composite, in which BC serves as a structural support for the growth of Mn-MOF. The characterizations of field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the effective synthesis of MOFs-derived MnO that maintains its original octahedral structure. MnO/carbon nanofiber is applied as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC), exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity with 90.59% TC decomposition generated after 30 min. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency for TC remains 83.38% after five cycles. Besides, the quenching experiments confirm not only synergistic effect of radical and non-radical species, but also the vital role of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in MnO/CBC-PMS system. This work constructs a new pathway in the preparation of high-performance MOFs-derived metal oxides/carbon materials, which have the potential to enhance the activity in activating peroxymonosulfate for effluent disposal.

Hierarchically nanostructured binary transition metal oxide-based materials with high conductivity and catalytic activity are quite attractive for the electrochemical quantitative detection of environmental pollutants due to their natural abundance, variable oxidation state, and excellent synergies between metal sites. Herein, a new hierarchical MnO–Fe 3 O 4 @C/expanded graphite (EG) composite is designed and synthesized through a simple and in situ annealing method with the utilization of bimetallic organic framework (FeMn-MOF)/EG precursor. The synthesized MnO–Fe 3 O 4 @C/EG composite possesses a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture that small-sized bimetallic oxide nanoparticles of 10–40 nm completely encapsulated by amorphous carbon layers of 2–4 nm are uniformly distributed on the EG platform. This distinctive structure combines the advantages of high conductivity, excellent catalytic activity, and strong stability. Resultantly, when it is applied to monitor environmental endocrine disruptors , the sensor exhibits a significant catalytic effect on the electrochemical oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA), inducing an amplified response current. In addition, the sensor shows a wide linear range of 1–50 μM and 50–400 μM for the BPA monitor, giving a sensitivity of 5208.8 and 1641.9 μA mM −1 cm −2 , respectively. This study offers a new approach to design hierarchical binary metal oxide-based sensing materials as well as to explore their electrochemical properties and applications for the determination of emerging contaminants.

The pursuit of efficient and economically viable catalysts for liquid/solid-state zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is of paramount importance yet presents formidable challenge. Herein, we synthesized a vacancy-rich cobalt/manganese oxide catalyst (Co/MnO@NC) stabilized on a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NC) nanosphere matrix by leveraging hydrothermal and high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. The optimized Co/MnO@NC demonstrates fast reaction kinetics and large limiting current densities comparable to commercial Pt/C in alkaline electrolyte for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Moreover, the Co/MnO@NC serves as an incredible cathode material for both liquid and flexible solid-state ZABs, delivering impressive peak power densities of 217.7 and 63.3 mW cm −2 and robust long-term stability (459 h), outperforming the state-of-the-art Pt/C and majority of the currently reported catalysts. Research indicates that the superior performance of the Co/MnO@NC catalyst primarily stems from the synergy between the heightened electrical conductivity of metallic Co and the regulatory capacity of MnO on adsorbed oxygen intermediates. In addition, the abundance of vacancies regulates the electronic configuration, and superhydrophilicity facilitates efficient electrolyte diffusion, thereby effectively ensuring optimal contact between the active site and reactants. Besides, the coexisting NC layer avoids the shedding of active sites, resulting in high stability. This work provides a viable approach for designing and advancing high-performance liquid/solid-state ZABs, highlighting the great potential of energy storage technology.

Transition metal-based compounds, due to their excellent ORR catalytic performance under alkaline condition, have recently emerged as one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal-based ORR catalysts. It is worth noting that manganese oxide can take an unique advantage for decomposition of intermediate adsorption products H 2 O 2 and can effectively reduce O 2 to OH − . However, most research has focused on MnO 2 , while attention has rarely been paid to MnO catalysts. In addition, under high-temperature pyrolysis condition, MnO is the most stable manganese oxide but MnO nanoparticles easily agglomerate. Hence, it is very difficult to obtain well-dispersed and small-sized MnO nanoparticles. Herein, on the basis of pre-synthesizing uniformly distributed manganese complexes on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO), we innovatively prepare highly dispersed and small-sized MnO nanoparticles (~3.94 nm) via high-temperature pyrolysis, which are uniformly anchored on N-doped reduced graphene oxide (NrGO) as an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst . The as-obtained MnO/NrGO (1050 °C) electrocatalyst achieves satisfactory onset potential (0.942 V) and half-wave potential (0.820 V) under alkaline condition. And the limiting current density is 4.17 mA cm −2 , which is very close to that of Pt/C (20 wt%, JM). Meanwhile, MnO/NrGO (1050 °C) catalyst presents superior longstanding durability and methanol resistance than Pt/C (JM). This work indicates that high-temperature pyrolysis can improve the purity of manganese oxide, simultaneously the defects of NrGO can reduce particle size of MnO nanoparticles, which are greatly beneficial to improve ORR performance. This work provides a new idea for research of MnO catalysts for ORR in the future.

Owing to their excellent theoretical capacity, the metal oxide/carbon composites derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show significant potentials as excellent anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the metal oxides in the MOF-derivatives are usually in the form of crystals, resulting in the poor electrochemical performance. In this study, the pore-rich Co/MnO@C composite with low crystallinity (Co/MnO-LC@C) was in-situ synthesized via the pyrolysis of MnCo-MOF-74 precursor and proposed as advanced anode for LIBs. The active materials with low crystallinity uniformly distributed within the carbon skeleton exhibit an excellent discharge capacity with a superior cycling stability. The reversible capacity of the proposed Co/MnO-LC@C composite can be as high as 710 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 over 900 cycles. In addition, the composite can retain a remarkable specific capacity of 200 mA h g −1 with zero capacity decay over 3500 cycles at 10 A g −1 . The notably improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the rich pore structure, carbon skeleton structure, high specific surface area along with active materials with low crystallinity, leading to the alleviated volume expansion and facilitated lithium-ion transport characteristics. This work is expected to provide an innovative aspect for developing advanced anodes for LIBs.

This study investigates microenvironment-engineered Mn-CNF catalysts with tailored active sites to boost oxidant utilization in Fenton-like water purification. The catalyst was synthesized by in situ anchoring Mn sites onto the carbon framework, improving the electrical conductivity of the carbon fibers and coordination capacity for peroxydisulfate (PDS). The Mn-CNF/PDS system achieved a high degradation rate of target pollutants via electron transfer process (ETP), with 90.2 % TCH removal after 120 hours in continuous flow operation, while maintaining Mn leaching below 0.1 ppm. Theoretical calculations revealed a stronger adsorption energy for PDS on Mn-CNF (-7.35 eV) compared to MnO (-4.35 eV) and CNF (-4.24 eV), with the lowest Gibbs free energy for complex formation. The rapid ETP demonstrated high selectivity in the presence of competing ions and natural organic matter. This work provides a novel strategy for sustained, efficient water purification through microenvironmental engineering in Fenton-like catalysts.

MnO is regarded as a highly promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical specific capacity and abundant resources. Nevertheless, its intrinsic low electrical conductivity and significant volume expansion during cycling lead to poor rate capability and cycling performance, hindering its practical applications. Herein, N,P-co-doped carbon/MnO composite was designed and synthesized using expired milk powder as the nitrogen and phosphorus-codoped carbon source and manganese acetate tetrahydrate as the manganese source by freeze-drying and annealing strategies. In this composite, MnO nanoparticles (average size of 60 nm) are uniformly embedded within a three-dimensional interconnected N,P-co-doped foam-like carbon framework. The 3D carbon skeleton has a reversible wrinkling deformation, effectively mitigating the volume expansion of MnO during charge/discharge cycles and preventing particle aggregation. Additionally, N-doping introduces abundant surface active sites to enhance Li+ adsorption and improves electronic conductivity for efficient charge transfer, while P-doping generates defects in the carbon matrix, accelerating the kinetics of Li+. Therefore, the synergy between highly dispersed MnO nanoparticles and N,P-co-doped carbon matrices endows exceptional electrochemical performance, including high reversible capacity of 966 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 with 190 cycles, superior rate capability of 318 mAh g–1 at 4.0 A g–1, and long cycle performance (retaining 526 mAh g–1 at 1.0 A g–1 after 600 cycles). Furthermore, Li full cell assembled with LiFePO4 as the cathode and this composite as the anode also presents outstanding cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 111 mAh g–1 after 250 cycles at 0.1 A g–1.

Core-shelled MnO/C nanospheres were prepared via a facile template strategy. • MnO/C demonstrated superior zinc storage behavior with outstanding cycling/rate performance. • MnO/C showed surface pseudocapacitance-dominated hybrid charge-storage mechanism. Manganous oxide (MnO) is a promising high-capacity cathode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), but its practical application is severely hindered by low intrinsic electronic conductivity and large volume fluctuations during cycling. Constructing yolk–shell architectures with conductive carbon matrices is an effective strategy, yet conventional templating methods usually involve sacrificial templates and multi-step procedures, limiting scalability and structural uniformity. Herein, we report a facile, template-free strategy to fabricate uniform yolk–shell MnO/C nanospheres. The synthesis involves a single-step solvothermal preparation of a Mn–glucose complex precursor, followed by controlled thermal annealing under argon. The resulting architecture features a well-defined internal void, a porous MnO/C composite shell, and a continuous three-dimensional carbon network. These structural attributes synergistically accommodate volume expansion, facilitate electron transport, and shorten ion diffusion pathways. When evaluated as a cathode for AZIBs, the yolk–shell MnO/C delivers a high reversible capacity of 290.0 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and outstanding long-term cycling stability, retaining 191.2 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 146.5 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 each after 1000 cycles. Quantitative kinetic analysis reveals that the superior rate capability originates from a surface pseudocapacitance-dominated hybrid charge-storage mechanism, enabled by the high specific surface area and abundant mesoporous channels of the yolk-shell architecture. This work provides a straightforward and scalable pathway for fabricating advanced yolk–shell structured metal oxide/carbon composites for advanced energy storage.
