Direct mechanochemical synthesis of MoO2/MoC heterostructures catalysts with enhanced performance for hydrogen evolution reaction

Peirong Chen,Hao Zhong,Liuzhang Ouyang,Haiwen Li

Interfacial engineering is an effective approach for regulating the electronic structure of molybdenum carbides and promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the development of a facile, cost-effective, and scalable synthesis method is crucial for industrial applications. In this work, we developed a mechanochemical method for the preparation of a composite of MoO 2 /MoC with superior HER electrocatalytic performance in alkaline solutions. The MoO 2 /MoC composite can be easily formed by ball milling for 1 h at ambient conditions, and this process can be scaled up for large-scale industrialization. The composite construction leads to a redistribution of electrons around the interface, optimizing the adsorption energy and enhancing the HER performance beyond that of Pt/C catalysts. This strategy provides a new route for the simple and efficient preparation of high-activity electrocatalysts.

Selective capacitive removal of Pb(II) ions from industrial wastewater using NF/Mn2CoO4@MoO2 electrodes

Changbin Tang,Yanrong Li,Yongqi Yu,Yuzhu Shi,Hongjiao Xu,Yujie Zhang,Juanqin Xue,Nan Zheng

To achieve targeted removal of Pb 2+ from industrial wastewater, a NF/Mn 2 CoO 4 @MoO 2 composite electrode, synthesised using the hydrothermal method combined with electrodeposition technology, was employed to construct an asymmetric capacitive deionization (CDI) system to selectively electro-adsorb and desorb Pb 2+ ions. The electrode exhibited pseudocapacitive characteristics in solutions containing Pb 2+ , facilitating rapid and reversible redox reactions. The asymmetric CDI system, utilising graphite paper as the positive electrode and NF/Mn 2 CoO 4 @MoO 2 as the negative electrode, displayed exceptional adsorption performance at 1.4 V for 1 h, decreasing the Pb 2+ concentration from 50 ppm to 4 ppb, achieving an adsorption capacity of 156.24 mg g −1 , and displaying outstanding cyclic stability. Moreover, the electrode demonstrated preferential adsorption of Pb 2+ in mixed solutions containing multiple heavy metal ions, with relative removal coefficients of 4.48 − 19.86 compared with other ions. Analysis of the adsorption mechanism indicated that during the adsorption process, Pb 2+ was embedded between MoO 2 layers, disrupting the electron cloud symmetry and triggering an oxidation reaction. Octahedral MoO 2 then lost electrons and transformed into tetrahedral [MoO 4 ] 2- , forming PbMoO 4 with embedded Pb 2+ between the layers, and achieving effective removal of Pb 2+ with high selectivity. Molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the high selectivity of the prepared electrode for Pb 2+ ions based on stronger binding of Pb 2+ to MoO 2 than other ions. The electrode has application potential for the capacitive removal of Pb 2+ from industrial effluent through CDI technology.

Amorphous-crystalline heterostructured RuMoNiN/Ni-MoO2 for highly efficient and stable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Mingtao Chu,Huimin Zhang,Bianqing Ren,Jing Cao,Teng Zhang,Ping Song,Zizhun Wang,Ce Han,Weilin Xu

The amorphization and heterostructuralization of noble metal-based materials are effective approaches to enhance the electrocatalytic performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting. Herein, (NH 4 ) 4 [NiH 6 Mo 6 O 24 ]·5H 2 O (NiMo 6 ) polyoxometalate was employed for the Ru combination to fabricate a heterostructured catalyst consisting of amorphous Ru MoNiN and crystalline Ni-MoO 2 (Ru MoNiN /Ni-MoO 2 ) via a simple annealing process under Ar/NH 3 atmosphere. Comprehensive structural characterizations and theoretical investigations suggest that the formation of such unique amorphous-crystalline heterostructures is governed by the application of NiMo 6 precursor and Ar/NH 3 atmosphere, which leads to the joint regulation on the electronic structure of Ru sites through -NH 2 coordination and heterostructured interaction, and thus facilitating the water dissociation and H intermediates sorption steps in the alkaline HER process. Accordingly, the as-fabricated Ru MoNiN /Ni-MoO 2 manifests excellent HER performance demanding an overpotential of only 18.3 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a minimal overpotential decay rate of 0.62 mV h −1 during continuous operation at 1 A cm −2 . This work offers constructive suggestions for the facile construction and structural regulation of amorphous-crystalline heterostructured noble metal-based electrocatalysts for various promising energy applications.

Sputtering MoO2 blocking layer for enhancing the efficiency and dynamic response of CZTSSe solar cells

Shulei Liang,Yingjun Zhou,Yujun Li,Chuanhe Ma,Hailong Wang

This study investigated the impact of MoOx blocking layer prepared by magnetron sputtering and air-annealing methods on the photoelectric performance of CZTSSe solar cells. The results showed that the MoO2 layer prepared by sputtering method exhibited more uniform and dense surface morphology, with an optimal thickness of 10 nm for the cell's photoelectric performance. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed that the MoO2 blocking layer effectively suppressed carrier recombination, increasing the recombination resistance (Rct) from 4516 Ω to 11342 Ω and significantly enhancing the minority carrier lifetime (τ) from 32 μs to 146 μs. Additionally, light response (I-T) testing demonstrated that devices with the MoO2 blocking layer achieved a peak photocurrent (Imax) four times higher than that of the control group under high duty cycle (PWM=90%), with an outstanding on/off ratio of 7×10 5 and a shortened pulse rise time (τrising) of 2 μs.These results confirm that the MoO2 blocking layer markedly enhanced carrier mobility and dynamic response by effectively suppressing the formation of MoSe2 and mitigating the decomposition of the CZTSSe absorber layer. Consequently, the device's power conversion efficiency (PCE) was boosted from 8.26% to 11.45%. This work provides valuable insights into interface engineering for developing high-performance CZTSSe photovoltaic devices.

Ultrathin Graphene Oxide Sheets Wrapped MoO2 Nanoparticles with Molecule Enrichment Function for Sensitive SERS Detection

Na Li,Jiajia Song,Penghui Wei,Muhammad Usman Amin,Haibin Tang,Ganhong Zheng,Meiling Wang,Yongqing Ma,Yupeng Yuan,Chuhong Zhu

Benefiting from their low price, high performance stability, and moderate-to-high detection sensitivity, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates made of noble metal-free materials have received much attention in the past few years. Improving the SERS sensitivity of non-noble metal materials is of great significance. Here, we propose a strategy of combining ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) sheets with plasmonic non-noble metal materials to enhance SERS sensitivity. By leveraging the adsorption property of GO and plasmonic hotspots of MoO2 nanoparticles (MoO2-NPs), the enrichment of target molecules around hotspots can be realized, thereby achieving high detection sensitivity. Highly surface-roughened plasmonic MoO2 nanospheres are wrapped by ultrathin-GO sheets, forming an ultrathin-GO/MoO2-NP hybrid. GO sheets with a huge specific surface area and high adsorption ability can trap analyte molecules in the locations near or in hotspots of MoO2-NPs. A uniform film of ultrathin-GO-wrapped MoO2-NPs shows a high enhancement factor of ∼1.12 × 108 and good spectral homogeneity (relative standard deviation, RSD = 9.7%). The detectable concentration limit for rhodamine 6G molecules is ∼10 pM, demonstrating high SERS sensitivity. In addition, the ultrathin-GO/MoO2-NP hybrid also exhibits excellent structural and chemical stabilities. The fabricated GO/MoO2-NP hybrid has promising applications in the SERS-based detection of trace chemical molecules.

Boosting potassium storage in nanosheet assembled MoSe2 hollow sphere through surface decoration of MoO2 nanoparticles

Qingqing Jiang,Sha Hu,Lin Wang,Zhengxi Huang,Hai-Jian Yang,Xiaole Han,Yongxiu Li,Chao Lv,Yu-Shi He,Tengfei Zhou,Juncheng Hu

Considering the suitable redox potential, low price, and abundant resource of potassium, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted considerable attention as one of the alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), however, the larger ionic radius of potassium ions makes it difficult to select suitable electrode materials. Herein, the MoSe 2 @MoO 2 heterojunction in which MoO 2 nanoparticles embedded on MoSe 2 nanosheets was synthesized by hydrothermal method and used as a novel anode material for PIBs. The electrochemical performance of the heterojunction was greatly improved as compared with the pure MoSe 2 and pure MoO 2 . At the current density of 500 mA g −1 after 100 cycle, the heterojunction electrode still maintains a capacity of 255 mA h g −1 and the coulomb efficiency is close to 100%. By introducing metallic MoO 2 can improve the electrical conductivity, furthermore, the MoSe 2 @MoO 2 heterostructures facilitate interfacial electron transport and built-in electric field makes the diffusion of K-ion easier. In addition, the well dispersed MoO 2 nanoparticles prevent the restacking of MoSe 2 nanosheets and maintain the structure stability during the charge/discharge process.

In-situ fabrication of MoO3 nanobelts decorated with MoO2 nanoparticles and their enhanced photocatalytic performance

Qingyang Xi,Jinsong Liu,Zhengying Wu,Hongfei Bi,Ziquan Li,Kongjun Zhu,Jiajia Zhuang,Jixun Chen,Songlong Lu,Yanfang Huang,Guoming Qian

Photocatalysis has been rapidly developed as a sustainable technology to decompose contaminants by using photogenerated carriers excited through light irradiation . Electrons for molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ) semiconductor with wide band gap can be easily transferred to its conduction band via dye sensitization effect under visible light . However, MoO 3 still suffers from poor photocatalytic ability for organic dyes due to the low energy level of the conduction band and the insufficient utilization of the induced electrons. In this study, molybdenum dioxide (MoO 2 ) nanoparticles were decorated on the surface of MoO 3 nanobelts without requiring an additional Mo source by using a simple in-situ hydrothermal method . In the reaction process, the partial MoO 3 itself was reduced to metallic MoO 2 nanoparticles , and the resulting intimate interface between MoO 2 and MoO 3 could accelerate the transfer of dye sensitization-induced electrons. The as-prepared MoO 2 /MoO 3 nanocomposites exhibited extremely enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for decomposing rhodamine B (RhB) with the assistance of H 2 O 2 . The mechanism for high-efficiency degradation was analyzed and explored by conducting theoretical calculations and designing further experiments. The high-efficiency degradation might be due to the synergistic effect caused by the well-matched energy band structure between dyes and MoO 3 , and the metallic MoO 2 nanoparticles , which can accelerate the production of hydroxyl radical ( OH) from H 2 O 2 . OH is a dominant reactive species for the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation.

Hollow spherical MoO2–C cocatalyst derived from Mo-polydopamine boosts photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of ZnIn2S4

Rui Liu,Yunpei Cui,Na Chai,Lei Yang,Xiufeng Zhang,Qianqian Nie,Hesheng Yu

This study developed an amorphous MoO 2 –C hollow spherical cocatalyst (MOC) derived from Mo-polydopamine, and hybridized it with ZnIn 2 S 4 to form ZnIn 2 S 4 /MoO 2 –C (ZMC) composites. Various characterizations were conducted to analyze the crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrical properties of the ZMC composites. The prepared ZMC composites were evaluated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight. Furthermore, nanorod-like MoO 2 –C cocatalyst (A-MOC) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /A-MOC (A-ZMC) composites were prepared to investigate the impact of carbon source on catalytic activity. Results show that the addition of MOC cocatalyst significantly enhances the hydrogen evolution rate of ZnIn 2 S 4 from 0.54 to 20.61 mmol g −1  h −1 , and increases the apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm from 1.66 % to 8.63 %. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal ZMC is 1.26 times that of the optimal A-ZMC (16.28 mmol g −1  h −1 ). The crystal structure and morphology of MoO 2 –C determined by carbon source affect the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Insight mechanism analysis indicates that the formation of a Schottky junction facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Finally, the ZMC composite catalyst retains 89 % of its original hydrogen evolution performance after 5 cycles over 15 h, demonstrating good stability and promising prospects for real-world applications.

Approaching Charge Compensation Limit for Promoting Magnetoresistance in 2D Nonlayered MoO2 via Surface Hydrogen Passivation

Huanzhi Chen,Zongkui Tian,Xilong Zhou,Xiulian Fan,Zian Li,Cheng Li,Chenyang Niu,Wenlong Chu,Yuqi Zhou,Liqi He,Yumeng Yang,Zheng Peng,Yu Zhou

Large non-saturated magnetoresistances of semimetals are dominated by charge compensation due to their unique electronic structure. However, the dramatic magnetoresistance deteriorations are often observed in low-dimensional system resulting from high-density surface defects, where the suppression of charge scattering or concentration unbalance with highly maintained magnetoresistance is still challenging. Herein, a hydrogen annealing strategy is developed for surface defects passivation of 2D MoO 2 nanoflakes. Systematical characterization for H-MoO 2 nanoflakes reveals the formation of hydrogen chemical bonds that reduce surface defect density and slightly change Fermi level with unchanged bulk structures. An obviously enhanced magnetoresistance of 9.2% is demonstrated for H-MoO 2 nanoflakes compared to Ar-MoO 2 of 3.9% at 10 K and 9 T. The analysis of the nonlinearity Hall resistivity unravels the concentration of electrons and holes in H-MoO 2 approaches a more balanced equilibrium, which is attributed to surface defects passivation resulting in the suppression of self-doping effects for enhanced magnetoresistance rather than the reduced charge scattering with slightly enhanced carrier mobility. The research not only provides a universal surface passivation strategy on 2D nonlayered semimetals for approaching the charge compensation limit with the preserved magnetoresistance but also underscores the significance of surface passivation in tuning electronic structures of 2D nonlayered materials.

Improved catalytic conversion of polysulfide by MoO2/C composite host for stable Li–S batteries

Du Gang,Zhao Jinguo,Yang Hongwei

Lithium-sulfur batteries with high theoretical energy density have drawn much attention during the past decades, while the shuttle effect of the polysulfide also hinders the practical application. The employment of suitable host materials has been considered as the effective strategy to inhibit the polysulfide migration. In this work, we develop MoO 2 /C composite as sulfur host material to increase the capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries while retaining high capacity after cycles. The MoO 2 /C composite could serves as active sites, effectively adsorbing and catalytically converting polysulfide, thus improving the redox kinetics and reducing shuttle effect. Owing to these merits, the as-prepared MoO 2 /C@S cathodes exhibit high capacity of 1165 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. Meanwhile, the battery exhibits superior rate capability and stable cycling performance.

In situ confinement of Pt within three-dimensional MoO2@porous carbon for efficient hydrogen evolution

Yimin Jiang,Miao Yang,Meijiao Qu,Yi Wang,Zhouchunyu Yang,Qingliang Feng,Xia Deng,Wei Shen,Ming Li,Rongxing He

Promoting the industrialization and widespread application of Pt-based catalysts is essential to electrochemical water-splitting systems. However, the development of cost-effective Pt-based catalysts still remains a huge challenge. Here we report a novel confinement method of small Pt nanoparticles in three-dimensional MoO2@porous carbon (Pt–MoO2@PC) using a metal–organic framework-assisted replacement strategy. Porous carbon acts as a matrix to confine Pt, achieving a high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles and providing fast electron transfer and ion penetration during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The MoO2 interface modulation leads to more thermal-neutral hydrogen adsorption free energy and thus enhances the intrinsic catalytic activity of Pt nanoparticles. The obtained Pt–MoO2@PC electrocatalyst with a low Pt amount of 8.32 wt% exhibits high HER performance, with an overpotential of 20 mV at −10 mA cm−2 and an 11-times higher mass activity than commercial Pt/C. This work can open new perspectives for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes with hydrazine at near-room temperature catalysed by a MoO2 catalyst

Chaofeng Zhang,Jianmin Lu,Mingrun Li,Yehong Wang,Zhe Zhang,Haijun Chen,Feng Wang

We present an experimental and computational study of the elementary steps of hydrazine hydrogen transfer on crystalline MoO2, and demonstrate its unique bifunctional metallic-basic properties in a catalytic hydrogenation reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the stepwise hydrogen transfer via the prior cleavage of the N–H bond rather than the N–N bond, is the key step to create the dissociated hydride and proton species on the dual Mo and O sites, marking its difference with common oxides. Crystalline MoO2 shows exceptionally high chemoselectivity toward the nitro reduction over CC, CC, and CN groups at room temperature and lower, down to 0 °C, rendering it as a promising catalytic material for hydrogenation reactions.
