Spin Selectivity Induced by the Interface Effect for Boosted Water Oxidation

Zhigao Xue,Biao Wu,Zheng Zhang,Chao Lin,Xiaopeng Li,Qiuju Zhang,Kai Tao

Creating highly effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds paramount importance in advancing carbon-neutral hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Recent research highlights the crucial role of spin effects on the OER, emphasizing that the manipulation of spin polarization is a promising strategy to augment the OER kinetics. Here, we present a core–shell heterostructure electrocatalyst, which leverages the strong coupling of the interface between antiferromagnetic Co3O4 and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) to trigger a spontaneous magnetic response enhancement, which suggests the strong double exchange interaction at the interface of the core–shell heterostructure. This electrocatalyst displays a 26-fold increase in intrinsic OER activity compared to pristine NiFe-LDH at an overpotential of 0.25 V. Through experimental and computational analyses, we find that the strong double exchange interaction within the heterostructure creates polarized spin conduction channels at the interface, which enables efficient accumulation of electrons with appropriate spin states, thereby lowering the energy barrier for the generation of triplet O2. Our work presents a promising approach to designing high-performance OER catalysts by introducing spin selectivity in traditional metal oxide electrocatalysts.

Secondary Sulfidation-Engineered Co/N–Graphene Catalyst for Boosted ORR/OER Bifunctionality in Zinc–Air Batteries

Changlei Xia,Hongjie Chen,DongDong Wang,Shilei Ding

The development of highly efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts is of crucial importance for advancing the large-scale application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This present study introduces a composite catalyst composed of cobalt-based sulfides supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (Co@NG-S2), synthesized through a two-step sulfurization strategy. The first sulfurization stage was successful in achieving co-doping of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) while enhancing the conductivity and activity of the graphene support. The second sulfurization step promoted the uniform distribution of cobalt-based sulfides and strengthened their interfacial coupling with graphene, thereby significantly improving their bifunctional catalytic performance. Electrochemical characterization revealed that Co@NG-S2 exhibited an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) onset potential of 0.868 V and a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.798 V (vs. RHE). For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), Co@NG-S2 demonstrated a low overpotential of merely 430 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , thereby demonstrating exceptional ORR/OER bifunctional activity. In addition, a liquid ZAB assembled with this catalyst achieved a peak power density of 110 mW cm -2 and exhibited cycling stability exceeding 200 hours. This study proposes a novel strategy for the synthesis of high-performance transition metal sulfide-carbon-based catalysts, demonstrating considerable promise for future applications.

Yong Jiang,Zhenhai Zhu,Xiaoxiao Shan,Chunli Jiang,Sanzhao Song

The exsolution of nanoparticles from perovskite oxides has attracted considerable attention for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) applications owing to their exceptional stability and catalytic activity. Understanding and controlling the surface exsolution behavior of nanoparticles is critical for tuning the catalytic activity and stability of perovskite oxide. Herein, we investigate the effect of high-valence tungsten (W) doping on the exsolution behavior and OER performance of LaCo 0.8 Fe 0.15 W 0.05 O 3-δ perovskite. Compared with the pristine perovskite, W doping elevates the exsolution temperature from 600 to 650 °C, indicating a significant influence on both thermodynamics and kinetics processes. The reduced electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable OER performance, achieving an overpotential of 234 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, along with low Tafel slope (67 mV dec −1 ), small charge transfer resistance (20 Ω) and long-term stability, underscoring its superior charge transfer kinetics and electrical conductivity. This work provides valuable insights into the role of high-valence dopants in modulating exsolution behavior, offering guidance for the rational design of highly efficient for energy conversion applications. Graphical High-valence W doping in LaCo 0.8 Fe 0.15 W 0.05 O 3-δ increases the exsolution temperature from 600 to 650 °C and significantly enhances oxygen evolution reaction performance, achieving an overpotential of 234 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 67 mV·dec −1 , and a charge transfer resistance of 20 Ω, providing critical insights for designing new electrocatalysts.

Engineering electron redistribution in NiCoP/Ti3C2Tx MXene through CeO2 coupling to boost HER and OER performance

Junhao Lu,Jun Wang,Yaojin Duan,Lan Ma,Dongfeng Zhai,Ihar Razanau,Kunming Pan,Yaru Li,Saifei Pan

Designing transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with remarkable performance and high stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a significant role in the commercial application of water splitting. Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) exhibits favorable electrocatalytic activity; however, it still suffers from intrinsic limitations such as insufficient intrinsic activity, inferior electrical conductivity, and a tendency toward particle agglomeration. To address these issues, a CeO 2 modified NiCoP particle catalyst (referred to as CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x ) loaded on a few layers of Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene was synthesized using an HCl/LiF etching and hydrothermal phosphorization method. The CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibits significantly lower overpotentials (287 mV for OER and 147 mV for HER) to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding durability, with 93.6% and 84.6% retention of its activity after 27 h of OER and 25 h of HER, respectively. The favorable performance of CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x in HER and OER can be attributed to several advantages. Few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x enhances the electrical conductivity of the material, and its large specific surface area prevents particle agglomeration, thus improving the material stability. The -O/-OH functional groups on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x endow the material with strong hydrophilicity, which facilitates the full contact between active sites and the electrolyte and accelerates the mass transfer and charge transfer kinetics. CeO 2 effectively optimizes the adsorption energy of NiCoP toward hydrogen intermediates by regulating the microelectronic structure of NiCoP, thereby boosting the HER kinetics.

Synergistic modulation of Li-doped FeCoNiMnZn HEO and modified nickel foam substrate for efficient OER electrocatalysis

Chenghao Wei,Chenglei Wang,Mengyi Wang,Junfeng Chen,Weijie Liu

Developing high-performance non-noble metal electrocatalysts is critical for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted extensive attention owing to their multi-element synergy and structural stability, but their practical applications are limited by high interfacial resistance and insufficient intrinsic activity. In this work, Li-doped FeCoNiMnZn HEOs were synthesized via a sol-gel combustion method and loaded onto bare nickel foam (NF) and ONF. The effects of Li doping and substrate modification on crystal structure, electronic state, and OER performance were systematically investigated. Results show that 7.5% Li doping optimizes the electronic structure and modulates oxygen vacancy defects, while the ONF substrate greatly reduces interfacial charge-transfer resistance. The optimal ONF-7.5% catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 54.84 mV·dec −1 , and excellent long-term stability for 100 h. This work provides a feasible strategy of combining Li doping and substrate interfacial engineering to boost OER performance of HEOs.

Balancing the activity–stability trade-off via catalyst–support interface lattice oxygen sharing for acidic OER

Ming Gong,Dongxu Jiao,Qiwen Su,Dewen Wang,Jinchang Fan,Lei Zhang,Xiaoxin Zou,Dantong Zhang,David J. Singh,Yong-Wei Zhang,Zhi Gen Yu,Weitao Zheng,Xiaoqiang Cui

Balancing activity-stability trade-off in acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts remains a central challenge for scalable proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). Here, we report a IrO x /Ni-CoO electrocatalyst with ultrasmall IrO x nanoparticles uniformly anchored onto Ni-doped CoO nanowires that exhibits exceptional activity and stability for acidic OER, with overpotential of 248.0 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a mass activity of 2271.9 mA mg Ir -1 at 1.53 V vs. RHE, representing a 1081.9-fold enhancement over commercial IrO 2 . When deployed in a PEMWE device, it achieves 1 A cm −2 at 1.73 V and maintains stable operation 750 h, demonstrating promising practical applicability. Comprehensive in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the lattice oxygen in the Ni-CoO support is involved for the formation of *OO intermediates. This catalyst-support lattice oxygen sharing not only breaks the inherent linear scaling relationship to form reactive O-O coupling for OER but also avoids the formation of oxygen vacancies in IrO x catalysts, thereby mitigating active-site degradation. This study presents a strategy for the development of high-performance and stable acidic OER electrocatalysts that harmonize activity, stability and precious metal utilization.

Fe and oxygen-vacancy engineering unlock coupled AEM-LOM pathways for active and durable alkaline OER

Zhen Xu,Qi Xiang,Junchi Zhao,Xuede Qi,Hu Yuan,Dongdong Li,Jingwen Liu,Xiaoyi Huang,Qian Xue,Andreu Cabot,Xueqiang Qi

Fe-doping and oxygen vacancies synergistically optimize NiCo 2-x Fe x O 4-y for alkaline OER. • Oxygen vacancies facilitate OH − adsorption to accelerate the AEM pathway. • Fe species modulate oxygen covalency to trigger the LOM pathway. • Oxygen vacancies act as oxygen reservoirs to regenerate lattice oxygen. • Dynamic regeneration prevents structural collapse, harmonizing AEM and LOM. Developing oxygen evolution electrocatalysts that combine high activity, long-term durability, and low cost remains a central challenge because these properties are often constrained by competing reaction pathways. The adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) is limited by linear scaling relationships, whereas the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) offers higher activity but typically suffers from structural degradation due to lattice oxygen loss. Here, we demonstrate that Fe doping in NiCo 2 O 4 creates a synergistic interplay between Fe active sites and oxygen vacancies, enabling both enhanced activity and durability. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal a dual-mechanism pathway: oxygen vacancies facilitate OH − adsorption to accelerate the AEM, while Fe species regulate O covalency to activate the LOM. Consequently, the optimized NiCo 1.4 Fe 0.6 O 4-y catalyst achieves an ultralow overpotential of 196 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, oxygen vacancies are proposed to facilitate lattice‑oxygen replenishment during LOM operation, thereby helping to mitigate structural degradation. This dynamic regeneration mechanism underpins the excellent long-term stability of more than 290 h. Overall, this work offers a practical strategy to break the activity–stability trade-off in oxygen evolution catalysis through oxygen-vacancy engineering of dual-mechanism pathways. Defect engineering synergistically unlocks coupled AEM and LOM pathways, with abundant oxygen vacancies accelerating intermediate adsorption and dynamically regenerating lattice oxygen, effectively breaking the intrinsic trade-off between catalyst activity and durability during alkaline water splitting. Cr-Ni synergy regulating the surface reconstruction of medium-entropy CoFeCrNiO4 to achieve high-performance OER

Lezhuo Li,Shangyun Chen,Jiaxin Liu,Zhongkang Cao,Ke Wang,Xu Zhang,Bingjun Yang,Juan Yang,Tianhong Zhou,Pengjun Ma

Spinel oxides are promising electrocatalysts whose activity can be tuned by elemental composition, yet understanding multicomponent synergy remains challenging. Herein, a Spinel-type medium-entropy CoFeCrNiO 4 electrocatalyst is developed, and a Cr-Ni synergistic strategy is proposed to regulate dynamic surface reconstruction during OER. The catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 263.4 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 365 mV at 300 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, with a low Tafel slope of 37.12 mV dec −1 . It also shows excellent stability, with only 2.78% overpotential decay after 24 h operation. In-situ characterization reveals that the Cr-Ni interaction promotes the formation of active oxyhydroxide species during reconstruction. This work provides insights into synergy-driven activity enhancement and offers guidance for the design of high-performance spinel OER catalysts.

Embedded Ag nanoparticles on boron nitride by introduced carbon nanotubes to optimize ORR and OER performance

Jiemei Yu,Chengchun Tang,Weimin Zhang,Zhankun Jiang,Lei Qi,Yanlu Mu,Taizhong Huang,Xueying Zhu

Cost-effective, earth-abundant and high electroactive bi-functional electrocatalyst for ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and OER (oxygen evolution reaction) is desirable for developing sustainable energy systems such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and metal-air batteries . In this work, Ag nanoparticles were first deposited on h-BN sheets via a simple complexation-reduction method, by using carbon nanotube as the conductive material . The structure, morphology and composition of obtained Ag-BN/C catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray), Raman, TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). These tests confirmed the presence of Ag on the h-BN support and tightly binding together by carbon nanotubes. Ag-BN/C shows improved ORR electrocatalytic activity which is comparable to that of Pt/C catalyst. The as-prepared catalyst also exhibits excellent OER catalytic activity. The long-time running and the tolerance to methanol studies show that the Ag-BN/C catalyst possesses high stability properties in alkaline medium. This investigation may provide technical and theoretical validation for application in fuel cells.

Preparation of highly efficient high-entropy alloy catalysts with electrodeposition and corrosion engineering for OER electrocatalysis

Haowei Bian,Chunyang Wang,Shen Zhao,Guoqiang Han,Guangwen Xie,Peng Qi,Xin Liu,Yan Zeng,Dun Zhang,Peng Wang

High entropy alloy (HEA) has recently gained attention as one of the promising materials for catalytic field because of its unique structure and multi-constituent synergy catalytic applications due to its diverse element composition and multi-constituent synergy that offered excellent thermal stability, catalytic activity and corrosion resistance . In the work, we introduce the facile preparation of a self-supporting HEA-FeMnCuCo via one-step electrodeposition method, followed by generating HEA multicomponent hydroxyl oxide via a corrosion engineering approach to acquire an efficient and stable alkaline electrolytic catalyst. The prepared catalyst exhibits a remarkable catalytic performance with the overpotentials of 226 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm −2 , and a low Tafel slope of 58.2 mV·dec −1 . And the high activity is attributed to the formation of transition metal elements (Ni/Fe/Co) with high oxidation states by a corrosion engineering, which increase the active sites and reduced the initial potential of oxygen evolution reaction . Additionally, the HEA catalyst exhibits an excellent long-term OER stability, lasting over 100 h at 50 mA cm −2 .

Fe-doped promotes phosphorization and dispersibility of Ni catalysts for efficient and stable HER and OER

Shaojun Sun,Chunyan Zhang,Mingxin Ran,Yujie Zheng,Chuanhua Li,Yu Jiang,Xuemin Yan

Developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts is crucial for hydrogen production through electrolysis of water. In this study, a comprehensive work was conducted on the electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution performance of nickel-based phosphides doped with metallic iron. The Ni 5 P 4 /Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P catalysts with heterostructure were synthesized via a simple two-step synthetic route: (i) NaBH 4 pretreatment and in situ hydrolysis, (ii) low-temperature phosphating. It was found that iron doping not only improves the dispersibility but also increases the valence state of nickel in phosphating products. The Ni 5 P 4 /Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P-2 catalyst prepared with a molar ratio of 3 between Ni and Fe exhibits the best performance for HER and OER. In detail, only 185 and 190 mV overpotentials in acidic and alkaline electrolytes are required when the current density of hydrogen production is 10 mA cm −1 , respectively. To achieve the same current density under alkaline conditions, an overpotential of 215 mV is required for oxygen evolution, which is superior to IrO 2 . This work would enlighten the construction of more advanced bifunctional catalysts (HER and OER) via metal Fe doping.

Hydrated Tripodal Polydentate Terpyridine Cobalt Complex-Based Metal–Organic Gel as a Bifunctional OER/ORR Electrocatalyst

Yuting Chen,Weicheng Tang,Xiaoyu Guo,Xiaohan Zhao,Yunmei Du,Jun Xing,Lei Wang,Kang Liu

In the pursuit of a technological breakthrough in zinc-air batteries, it is critical to find economical, durable, and high-performance catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to accelerate the slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a one-pot method was employed to synthesize the polymer within a mixed solvent of CHCl3 and CH3OH (v/v = 2:1). The resulting polymer can be well-dispersed in deionized water to form an aqueous metal–organic gel (MOG). Testing has revealed that Co-MOG exhibits dual catalytic properties for both the OER and ORR, a characteristic that is notably rare in original MOG materials. Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional long-term charge–discharge cycling stability in zinc-air batteries, outperforming several reported Co-based catalysts for the OER and ORR. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the CoN3 configuration serves as the catalytically active site of the material. In conclusion, this work supports the application of MOGs as unique bifunctional electrocatalysts for the OER and ORR in metal-air batteries.
