ZIF-derived carbons (ZDCs) represent a novel category of non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nevertheless, establishing the correlation between their structure and performance is challenging due to their diverse structural properties and ill-defined active site moieties. Here we investigate the effect of ZIF-67 derived carbon’s particle size and corresponding distribution of assorted nitrogen functionalities on the ORR. Our findings reveal a substantial increase in ORR activity with decreasing ZDC particle size, while the exact influence of nitrogen functionalities remains uncertain. Most importantly, the present work unveils a correlation between the ORR activity and the site density (SD) of Co-N x within the ZDC materials, which can be attributed to the concurrently increasing SD and accessibility of Co-N x on the ZDC particles with small sizes. The present work provides novel insights into the optimization of ZDCs as high-performance NPMCs for ORR in alkaline electrolytes.

An innovative, high-performance, non-noble-metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst must be developed utilizing a new and cost-effective technique. ZrO 2 has the merits of high stability, low toxicity, good catalytic activity, and low enthalpy for atomic oxygen adsorption. However, the poor conductivity restricts its application as an ORR catalyst. Here, we successfully prepared ZrO 2 nanoparticles / nitrogen-rich two-dimensional carbon nanosheet composites as ORR catalysts using a straightforward, solvent-free, one-step pyrolysis approach. Due to the unique component and structure characteristics, ZrO 2 @N-C-900 demonstrates remarkable ORR performances in alkaline electrolytes, such as high half-wave potential (0.82 V vs. RHE), higher current density (J L = 6.4 mA cm −2 ), and outstanding long term stability (95 % for 36,000 s). Especially, when used in a Zn-air battery, ZrO 2 @N-C-900 exhibited a power density of 148 mW cm −2 , exceeding that of 20 % Pt/C.

Rational design of inexpensive and durable bifunctional oxygen catalysts is essential to facilitate the commercialization of Zn-air batteries. Hence, we report an electrocatalyst with bifunctional catalytic activity, namely Fe species doped into N, S co-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (e-Fe/Co@NSC). Benefiting from the hierarchical porous structure and multiple adsorption sites, the optimized e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, requiring only overpotential of 282 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 also exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.816 V, successfully revealing that it has excellent bifunctional properties. Moreover, Zn-air battery assembled with e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 catalyst as air electrodes have high open-circuit voltage (1.472 V), power density (136 mW cm −2 ) and specific capacity (639 mAh g −1 Zn ), outperforming Pt/C + RuO 2 -based Zn-air battery. This study provides constructive assistance in the design of electrocatalysts with bifunctional properties for Zn-air battery.

Triphenylamine (TPA) has often been used as a building block to construct functional organic materials yet is rarely employed in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to its strong electron-donating ability. This versatile segment bears a three-dimensional spatial structure whose effect has not been fully explored in catalytic systems. To this end, five symmetric cobalt porphyrins with carbazole and TPA derivatives have been synthesized and their ORR performance has been evaluated in acid medium. It was found that all compounds produced mainly hydrogen peroxide in oxygen reduction, with CP1 attaching benzyl derivatives and XCP4 possessing TPA-carbazole substituents at the meso-position of porphyrin, showing similar but more positive ORR potential as compared to the other analogues. Importantly, XCP4 achieved the greatest response current and the largest electron transfer numbers and H2O2 yields among the investigated molecules. Detailed electrochemical measurements suggested that the dipole-induced partial charges on the porphyrin in tandem with the more exposed molecular orbitals on TPA contributed to this enhancement, with the former attracting more protons to the affinity of reactive sites and the latter increasing the collision frequency between the electrocatalyst and H+ in solution. This is the first attempt to integrate the intermolecular forces with more exposed molecular orbitals in altering the electrochemical process.

The development of highly efficient, non-noble-metal-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with low cost for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key for the commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. In this work, a non-noble-metal-based, hierarchically porous CoO/Co@N–C microsphere electrocatalyst with low cost and earth-abundance was created by directly reducing carbonized glucose-coated urchin-like Co3O4 microspheres through the carbon-thermal processing with NH3 reducing environment. Urchin-like Co3O4 microspheres provided a Co source for the creation of nano-CoO/Co active phase and served as the template without a removal requirement for the creation of hierarchically porous N-doped carbon microsphere matrix with abundant macropores and mesopores for efficient mass diffusion. Among its three major components, CoO played the leading role to provide both ORR and OER active sites, a porous N-doped carbon microsphere matrix mainly provided the conductive catalyst support, and the metallic Co component mainly acted as a “bridge” between CoO and graphic carbon to reduce the electron transfer resistance for the enhancement of its conductivity. Thus, their synergetic effect within its unique structure endowed a superior bifunctional performance toward both ORR and OER to the CoO/Co@N–C electrocatalyst over the commercially available Pt/C and Ir/C electrocatalysts.

Functional low-cost catalysts derived from earth abundant materials are vitally important for enabling mass implementation of renewable energy conversion systems, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries . Herein, we report the activation of earth-abundant coal to realize very active and stable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through oxidative pretreatment followed by thermal treatment under ammonia forming self-doped heteroatoms and defects. The coal thermally pretreated in air at 350 °C for 30 min followed by treatment in ammonia for 2 h presented very good electrocatalytic ORR activity with onset potential of 0.978 V, half-wave potential of 0.871 V, Tafel slope of 57 mV dec −1 , and predominant 4-electron reduction of O 2 to OH − . The influence of the preoxidation step prior to ammonia treatment on the properties of the coal-derived carbon and hence the ORR has been specifically studied. The optimized catalyst also displayed stable performance during the ORR in 0.1 M NaOH for a test period of 35 h and exhibited excellent tolerance to methanol. The preoxidation step facilitates elimination of aliphatic and amorphous carbon, condensation of aromatic structures and the formation of initial pore structures , and subsequent removal of unstable heteroatoms from aromatic carbon rings to form surface and edge defects as potential active sites for promoting the ORR. Using pristine coal as raw material to produce functional ORR catalysts will be of great importance for real applications.

Transition metal catalysts for replacing noble metals have been extensively studied, but the deficiencies in intrinsic activity and stability limit their application in electrocatalysis . Here, we present CoNi alloy nanoparticles loaded on Ti 4 O 7 supports and embedded in N, S doped carbon nanofibers by electrospinning method. The prepared CoNi/Ti 4 O 7 @NS-CNFs exhibits satisfactory ORR and OER activities with a low potential gap of 0.664 V and shows a high stability over long periods of testing, which are superior to most of the transition metal catalysts reported so far. Accordingly, the Zn-air battery constructed with the prepared catalyst demonstrates a maximum power density of 165.7 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 788.4 mA h g Z n - 1 (1.61 and 1.14 times higher than that of Pt/C + IrO 2 , respectively). The addition of S element and corrosion-resistant Ti 4 O 7 plays a significant part in the morphology and activity of the prepared catalyst, which optimizes the distribution and electronic structure of active centers, and improves the stability of the catalyst. This effort provides a possible approach to exploring the efficient performance of the other transition metals.

Fe-based double perovskites exhibit significant potential as cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) owing to their affordability, moderate thermal expansion, and impressive stability. Nevertheless, their practical utility has been constrained by their comparatively lower oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity . In this study, for the first time, lithium (Li) was employed as a dopant to improve the ORR activity of the Fe-based double perovskite PrBaFe 2 O 5+δ (PBFO). The results indicated that the ratios of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and O ads /O lat were effectively tuned by incorporating Li at Ba-sites of PBFO. Consequently, the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen, along with the charge transfer processes were regulated significantly, resulting in an increase in ORR kinetics and improved CO 2 resistance. At 800 °C, PrBa 0.9 Li 0.1 Fe 2 O 5+δ (PBLFO) demonstrated an R p of 0.072 Ω cm², which was decreased by 43.3% compared to PBFO. Simultaneously, the maximum power density of PBLFO-based full cell was improved by 23.3%, reaching 670 mW cm −2 . These findings suggest that Li-doping holds great potential for improving the performance of Fe-based SOFC cathodes, thereby contributing to the advancement of clean and sustainable energy technologies.

Novel nanocomposites of spherical graphite-carbon encased tungsten carbide (GC-WC) are synthesized by solid state reaction with melamine and WO 3 as precursors under N 2 atmosphere. The diameters of the GC-WC composites range from 50 to 200 nm and the WC nanoparticles inside with an average size of ca. 15 nm distribute uniformly. The characterization results indicate that the GC-WC is composed of few layers of graphite carbon and WC nanoparticles with high crystallization and purity. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performance of GC-WC for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium is further investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and chronoamperometry test with or without 3 M methanol. The results show that GC-WC has a considerable performance for ORR in the view of activity, stability and methanol tolerance, which may further used as proper supports for noble-metal based ORR catalysts in alkaline fuel cell . The synergetic interaction between the carbide nanoparticles and graphite carbon, which means that the surface graphite carbon layers are activated by WC nanoparticles for ORR and in turn protect inner WC from highly oxidizing environments has also been verified.

Developing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is critical for scaling rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we propose an integrated “etching–doping–phosphorization/carbonization” route to synthesize Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunctions anchored on B,N,P co-doped carbon (Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC). Firstly, boric acid etching of the ZIF(Zn, Co, Ni) generates a bird-nest-like porous framework and simultaneously introduces boron; subsequent phosphorization/carbonization at 1000 °C yields Ni 2 P/Co 2 P nanocrystals uniformly anchored on the B, N, P co-doped carbon. It is confirmed that the carbon framework exhibits abundant defects and contains B, N, and P atoms chemically bonded to the matrix. This structure possesses a high surface area and a through-pore network, which ensure the exposure of active sites and facilitate rapid mass transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that boron doping markedly decreases charge density and upshifts the d-band center of Co sites in the Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunction (from −1.26 to −0.87 eV), thereby raising the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limiting potential (from 0.34 to 0.69 V) and lowering the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) theoretical overpotential (from 0.89 to 0.54 V). Benefiting from these features, Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC in alkaline media delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V (vs. 0.85 V for 20% Pt/C) and an OER overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (vs. 308 mV for RuO 2 ). A lab-fabricated ZAB achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.586 V, a peak power density of 180.8 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 816.2 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 1159.0 Wh kg Zn −1 , and 600 h stable cycling.

Non-precious metal catalysts have emerged as the leading candidate to replace platinum-based catalysts due to their cost-effectiveness. However, the sluggish oxygen reduction kinetics and inadequate durability limit their application in zinc-air battery technology. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to construct a hierarchical architecture of N-doping γ-graphyne-supported carbon nanotubes encapsulating cobalt nanoparticles (Co@N-CNT/N-GY). This unique structure prevents the aggregation and exfoliation of nanoparticles, thereby enhancing the catalysts durability. Synchrotron radiation absorption spectroscopy confirms the presence of Co-N x coordination in Co@N-CNT/N-GY, which contributes to promote the oxygen reduction reaction. Density-functional theory calculations further reveal that nitrogen doping in carbon nanotubes induces substantial charge redistribution among adjacent carbon atoms, facilitating the formation of the OOH* intermediate and lowering the overall Gibbs free energy barrier. Moreover, the open-pore architecture of N-doping γ-graphyne promotes the rapid diffusion of dissolved oxygen and creates abundant gas-liquid-solid interfaces, thereby boosting the Oxidation-reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. As a result, the Co@N-CNT/N-GY catalyst delivers a high specific capacity (723 mAh g −1 ) and excellent power density (135.86 mW cm −2 ) when employed in a zinc-air battery. This study provides valuable insights for designing the γ-graphyne-supported non-precious metal ORR electrocatalyst with high activity and durability.

Improving the oxygen reduction reduction activity and thermal stability of cathode materials is critical to advancing the commercialization of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). In this study, a high-performance mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) BaCo 0.8 Ta 0.2 O 3-δ phase is incorporated into the lattice of NdBaCo 2 O 5+δ (NBC) double perovskite. Such composite construction elevates the oxygen vacancy concentration, lowers the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of NBC-based materials, and simultaneously improves electrocatalytic activity and long-term operational durability of IT-SOFCs. By fitting the distribution of relaxation times, it is concluded that the composite cathode material (NBC&BCT2) significantly accelerates the oxygen dissociation and adsorption kinetics compared with NBC. At 700 °C, the symmetric cell with NBC&BCT2 exhibits an area-specific resistance of only 0.034 Ω cm 2 , approximately 23% of that of NBC. When used as the cathode in IT-SOFCs, the NBC&BCT2-based cells achieve a maximum power density of 1.01 W cm 2 at 700 °C, which is 1.4 times higher than that of NBC. Furthermore, composite modification with BCT alleviates the long-term stability drawbacks originating from the excessively high TEC of Co-based materials. Single cells equipped with NBC&BCT2 maintain stable operation over 100 h under a constant rated voltage, with an output current density 1.5 times higher than that of NBC-based cells. This work establishes a reliable modification strategy to promote the electrocatalytic performance of Co-based perovskites and resolve stability limitations induced by high TEC.
