This study investigated the levels and composition of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organisms from South China Sea and assessed their potential health risks. The results revealed that the pollution levels of total PAHs ranged from 3.56 to 392.21 ng/g dw. Notably, 4-ring PAHs constituted the predominant fraction (58.02 %) of the total PAHs, with pyrene being the most abundant congener across all species. Intriguingly, our findings suggested that consuming these organisms might pose a low non-cancer hazard. Nonetheless, benzo[ a ]pyrene was detected in most species, with levels ranging from non-detectable to 11.24 ng/g dw. The individual lifetime cancer risk levels associated with seafood consumption in studied regions ranged from 1.10 × 10 −5 to 1.52 × 10 −5 , highlighting a potential cancer risk that warrants special attention. These findings emphasize the need to prioritize carcinogenic compounds over total PAHs and underscore the importance of continuous monitoring of PAH pollution in seafood.

The remediation of soil contaminated with hydrophobic organic pollutants has attracted great public concern. In the present study, a novel catalyst using biochar supported ferro ferric oxide modified by carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Fe 3 O 4 /BC) was developed to activate the Fenton reaction for hazardous hydrophobic organic pollutants , and the degradation mechanisms were analyzed in terms of free radicals , electron transfer pathways and degradation intermediates. The results showed that the CMC-Fe 3 O 4 /BC-activated H 2 O 2 system degraded nearly 100% of pyrene in the aqueous system after a 1440-min reaction. The catalyst was also applied to remediate industrial field soil contaminated with PAHs and γ-HCH. The removal rate of the total pollutants reached 61.1% after a 10-day reaction, which was higher than that of Fe 3 O 4 /BC without modification. CMC enabled the Fe 3 O 4 particles to more equably distribute on the BC surface, further effectively activating H 2 O 2 to generate more ⋅OH and forming different degradation products compared to the Fe 3 O 4 /BC. Additionally, the CMC-Fe 3 O 4 /BC-activated H 2 O 2 system obviously enhanced electron transfer on the BC surface. Thus, the PAHs and γ-HCH could be degraded via electron transfer pathways.

Multifunctional statistical copolymers can be simply synthesized in one step without tedious and time-consuming procedures. In addition, the fuzzy boundary between different functional groups in the statistical copolymers can facilitate the fabrication of new functional nanomaterials. Herein, we designed a novel multifunctional vesicle based on a statistical copolymer, poly[[2-hydroxy-3-(naphthalen-1-ylamino)propyl methacrylate]-stat-[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]] [P(HNA21-stat-DEA35)] which can be synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization in one step. The HNA moiety is designed for capturing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by π–π stacking, while the DEA moiety is engineered to immobilize gold nanoparticles for facilitating the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in aqueous solution. This vesicle showed excellent ability in water remediation by absorbing PAHs and accelerating the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Overall, this multifunctional statistical copolymer vesicle provides a new insight for designing multifunctional water remediation materials.

Thermal desorption technology at low temperatures has been extensively researched. However, the challenge remains in maintaining soil ecological function while effectively removing PAHs from contaminated soil using this method. Based on the gas hammer fragmentation concept, this study presents the strategy of gas stripping (steam extraction) coupled with microwave remediation. A multifunctional bluecoke-based modifier (MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC) was prepared followed by an investigation on the removal effect, soil characteristics and remediation mechanism of MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC-assisted microwave remediation of pyrene (PAHs model) contaminated soil. The research findings indicate that MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC is more effective in generating oxygen vacancies, facilitating surface electron transfer , and enhancing the oxidation effect of ROS on pyrene compared to KHCO 3 @BC and MnO 2 @BC. Despite having slightly inferior electromagnetic properties to BC, MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC could achieve a microwave remediation temperature of approximately 300 °C under optimal experimental conditions. MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC demonstrated remarkable pyrene removal efficiency with a maximum removal rate of 98.34%, making it an ideal candidate for pyrene remediation. Moreover, the remediated soil exhibited a weakly acidic nature, with a significant decrease in particle size and a substantial increase in potassium content. The study also highlighted a novel synergistic mechanism of ''microwave heating - gas stripping - oxidation,'' which can efficiently remove most of the pyrene adsorbed inside and outside of soil particles and degrade it into low-toxic and small-molecule organic matter, CO 2 , and H 2 O. Overall, the findings of this study could hold potential significance for upcoming endeavours concerning polluted industrial areas.

The activation process of persulfate (PS) often leads to the production of hydrogen ions, causing soil acidification and potential secondary pollution risks. This work developed a composite modified biochar loaded with potassium ferrate (KFe@KBC). A microwave-assisted KFe@KBC-activated PS system was established to simultaneously remediate benzo[a]pyrene (BaP, a model of PAHs) contaminants and mitigate soil acidification. Results showed that ferrate loading introduced Fe–O bonds and created a multivalent iron environment on KFe@KBC, suggesting the possible involvement of ferrate-derived intermediate iron species in the oxidation process..Under the most favorable conditions identified by a triangular radar chart-based comparative evaluation (microwave power: 490 W; PS concentration: 0.8 mol/L; KFe@KBC dosage: 4 wt%; K 2 FeO 4 loading: 4 wt%; soil moisture content: 20%), the removal efficiency of BaP reached 98.92%, and the soil pH stabilized at approximately 6.91. The remediation process transformed compact soil into a more porous structure, with increased silt and clay content, enhancing aeration and water retention properties. BaP degradation proceeded through radical-induced ring-opening and chain-cleavage reactions, eventually mineralizing into CO 2 and H 2 O. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching experiments identified SO 4 • − , •OH, O 2 • − , and 1 O 2 as the primary active species driving degradation through combined radical and non-radical pathways. Besides, toxicity prediction indicated significantly reduced toxicity and accumulation potential of degradation products.

Dewatered sewage sludge was treated with H 2 O 2 and/or Ni in supercritical water in a high-pressure autoclave (400 °C, 23 MPa, 60 min). The combined application of H 2 O 2 and Ni was more effective than applying each separately for hydrogen production and for inhibiting the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The hydrogen yield (0.79–1.28 mol/kg organic matter) of combined additives with different Ni:H 2 O 2 ratios was 21% to 35% higher than the calculated value of the hydrogen yield from the mixture. The Ni:H 2 O 2 ratio affected the ring number composition of PAHs (proportion of 4–6 ring PAHs increased from 13% to 44% with increasing Ni:H 2 O 2 ratio) considerably, but had little effect on the concentration of PAHs. The mechanisms of the Ni/H 2 O 2 additive were also investigated from the viewpoint of combined action and intermediates. Overall, the method developed herein has the potential to promote hydrogen production in an environmentally compatible manner.

The remediation of sites co-contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) poses challenges for efficient and ecofriendly restoration methods. In this study, three strains ( Pseudomonas sp. PDC-1, Rhodococcus sp. RDC-1, and Enterobacter sp. EDC-1) were isolated from sites contaminated with PAHs and HMs. The constructed bacteria consortium was then immobilized using biochar, bentonite, and peat. The immobilized bacteria consortium (IBC) demonstrated efficient removal ability of phenanthrene (58.1 %-73.4 %) and benzo[ a ]pyrene (69.6 %-83.5 %) during 60 days. Additionally, the IBC decreased soil bacterial richness and diversity, but increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria phylum and Ochrobactrum genus, which were capable of degrading PAHs. Soil microbial co-occurrence network with IBC was classified into three main modules, and 14 genera were identified as keystone taxa linked to PAHs degradation and HMs resistance. The IBC enhanced the dioxygenase metabolic pathways for PAHs degradation, including phthalic acid and salicylic acid pathways, which became the main driving factor affecting PAHs removal efficiency based on the structural equation modeling analysis. This study confirmed the potential application of the constructed IBC in the bioremediation of soil co-contaminated with PAHs-HMs, and provides insights into key removal mechanism and main driving factor of the enhanced elimination of PAHs.

Biochar (BC) and its composites have been widely used for pollutant treatment upon their adsorption and photocatalytic efficiency, but their toxicity and ecological effects have received little attention. In this study, BC was prepared and modified with nano-titanium dioxide to obtain BC composite (TiO 2 @BC), then the biotoxicity and ecological effects were investigated from two dimensions (single bacteria and microflora). In detailed, the effects of different dosage of BC and TiO 2 @BC on the degradation function, growth characteristics and toxicity mechanism of the strain Achromobacter sp. LH-1 were comprehensively studied. It was found that when the dosage of BC and TiO 2 @BC was less than or equal to 0.5 g/L, the degradation function of LH-1 was enhanced, but the effect on growth was negligible. However, when the dose exceeded 0.5 g/L, a large amount of ROS accumulated, which inhibited the cell respiratory chain and destroyed the cell wall. In another word, ·OH and ·O 2 – generated by BC and TiO 2 @BC played important roles in the inactivation of LH-1. Furthermore, a laboratory scale bioreactor (SBR) was built and applied to study the ecological effects of BC and TiO 2 @BC, and it was found that proper amount (0.5 g/L) of BC and TiO 2 @BC can not only effectively remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutants, but also increase the diversity of microbial communities, and promote the carbon and nitrogen cycle in the sewage system. This study analyzes the ecotoxicity risk of BC and TiO 2 @BC under photocatalysis in detail, which has important reference value for future practical applications in ecosystems.

Graphene oxide (GO)-promoted microbial degradation technology is considered an important strategy to eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment; however, the mechanism by which GO affects microbial degradation of PAHs has not been fully studied. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effect of GO-microbial interaction on PAHs degradation at the microbial community structure, community gene expression, and metabolic levels using multi-omics combined technology. We treated PAHs-contaminated soil samples with different concentrations of GO and analyzed the soil samples for microbial diversity after 14 and 28 days. After a short exposure, GO reduced the diversity of soil microbial community but increased potential degrading microbial abundance, promoting PAHs biodegradation. This promotion effect was further influenced by the GO concentration. In a short period of time, GO upregulated the expression of genes involved in microbial movement (flagellar assembly), bacterial chemotaxis, two-component system, and phosphotransferase system in the soil microbial community and increased the probability of microbial contact with PAHs. Biosynthesis of amino acids and carbon metabolism of microorganisms were accelerated, thereby increasing the degradation of PAHs. With the extension of time, the degradation of PAHs stagnated, which may be due to the weakened stimulation of GO on microorganisms. The results showed that screening specific degrading microorganisms, increasing the contact area between microorganisms and PAHs, and prolonging the stimulation of GO on microorganisms were important means to improve the biodegradation efficiency of PAHs in soil. This study elucidates how GO affects microbial PAHs degradation and provides important insights for the application of GO-assisted microbial degradation technology.

Although surfactant foams enhanced-remediation for PAHs-contaminated soil has been proved to be an effective method, lack of simple/economic surfactant recovery methods from the eluent solutions limit its further remediation application for organic contaminated soil. Here, we prepared a electrochemically reversible ferrocene surfactant FcCH 2 N + (CH 3 )C 12 H 25 (Fc12), then investigated the foaming ability and foam stability of Fc12 under its reduced (active state) and oxidation (inactive state) states and explored the flushing efficiency of reduced Fc12 foam for PAHs-contaminated soil and the recovery efficiency of collected eluent solution. The results showed that the foaming ability and foam stability of reduced Fc12 are greatly higher than those of oxidized Fc12, which is indicative of a well reversibly switchable characteristic of Fc12. The contaminated soil flushing efficiencies of reduced Fc12 for phenanthrene and pyrene were 65.28% and 46.45%. The respective desorption efficiency of phenanthrene and pyrene from collected eluent solutions were calculated to be 74.94% and 72.75% by electrochemical oxidation control, which indicates that Fc12 can be well recovered by simple electrochemical control. This study provides a feasible method for the recovery of surfactants from surfactant-enhanced remediation processes by simply electrochemical control.

The catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene for aromatic production is a promising method for waste plastic disposal and resource recovery. This study investigated the nature of metal species and the distribution of acidic sites in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) scission-aromatization reactions using metal-loaded zeolite catalysts. Under the influence of the 1.0Zn/MOR40 catalyst, LDPE achieved a maximum aromatic selectivity of 45.71 % at 500 °C, based on the total product composition. The results indicated that catalysts with a lower Brønsted acid site to Lewis acid site ratio (BAS/LAS) and a higher concentration of [ZnOH] + species favored the reaction, promoting the generation of olefin intermediates and aromatics while suppressing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation. However, there was an optimal range for the BAS/LAS ratio and [ZnOH] + species concentration. Reaction results involving squalene and triacontane demonstrated that excessive dehydrogenation of reactants and insufficient BAS could hinder the progression of aromatization reactions, resulting in an increased proportion of PAHs. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the balance between the synergistic and antagonistic effects of metal-acid sites on the aromatization process.

In this work, ultrasonic assisted extraction combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) was applied in the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environment samples. A titania nanotubes/titanium plate was modified with n-octadecanethiol monolayer-protected Ag nanoparticles , and developed as the adsorbent in SPE of PAHs. Six different PAHs in soil samples were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. The experiment conditions including the deposition time of Ag nanoparticles, extraction solvent properties, the amount of extraction solvent, the amount of organic modifier, extraction time, and desorption solvent properties were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, good linearity and low limits of detection of 0.0015–0.4 ng g −1 were obtained. The analysis of PAHs in real soil samples gave satisfactory recoveries ranging from 70.32% to 115.51% with 3.14%–13.56% intra-day relative standard deviations (RSD) and 4.92%–14.87% inter-day RSD.
