Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has been widely served as the state-of-art hole transport layer (HTL) for high performance organic solar cells (OSCs) due to its easy solution processability, excellent hole extraction ability, and well compatibility with various active layers. However, PEDOT:PSS shows several drawbacks such as relatively moderate conductivity and optical transparency, acidity, and reactivity, which directly limits the improvement of device performance and leads to the deterioration of device stability. In this work, metal oxide titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) was doped into the conventional HTL-material PEDOT:PSS, which simultaneously boosted the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of OSCs based on PBDB-T:N2200. The simultaneous improvement in PCE and stability is originated from the effectively improved light transmittance and conductivity of PEDOT:PSS, increased hole extraction of the active layer, as well as the optimized ohmic contact between the interface layer and the electrode. In addition, the TiO 2 doping PEDOT:PSS strategy is proved to be general to a variety of OSCs systems, which is expected to bring new opportunities for the development of high performance HTL, so as to promote the commercialization of OSCs.

Smart fabrics that integrate electronic devices with textiles are emerging as potential candidate for apparel and electronics industries. Soft actuators based on conducting polymers are promising for smart fabrics because of light weight, flexibility, and large deformation under low voltage. However, due to the distinct characteristics of textile and electronic components, the connection between textiles and electronic devices still keeps a challenge in development of smart fabrics. Here, we report an new strategy to prepare a flexible and electroactive textile actuator. The fabric electrolyte was directly coated with an electrode ink, which is composed of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) doped with carbonized carbon nanotubes wired zeolite imidazolate framework-8 composite. A pre-treatment of the fabric was made by soaking hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) to increase the ionic conductivity (6.72 mS cm–1) and prevent the electrode ink from penetrating through the fabric. It was found that the textile actuator could work in air stably under a low voltage of 3 V and operate at frequencies from 0.1 to 10 Hz with large strain difference (0.28% at 0.1 Hz), fast strain rate (2.8% s–1 at 10 Hz) and good blocking force (0.62 mN at 0.1 Hz). The key to high performance originates from high ionic conductivity of fabric electrolyte and large specific surface area, good mechanical properties of the metal-organic framework derivative-based composite electrodes, which present insights into preparing other smart fabrics such as textiles sensors, flexible displays, and textile energy storage devices.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):Poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) emerges as a promising transparent conducting electrode to replace indium tin oxide (ITO) in the field of optoelectronic devices. It is a pending issue that how to achieve high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS to meet the requirement as device electrode. In this work, two biomass-derived modifiers of PEDOT:PSS, i.e. , protocatechuic acid (PA) and gentianic acid (GtA), were investigated. The resultant conductivity was respectively estimated as 2022 S/cm (PA-treated) and 2270 S/cm (GtA-treated), in comparison with that of the ordinarily prepared film (∼0.9 S/cm). By analyzing the PEDOT/PSS ratio, phase morphology, as well as benzenoid/quinoid conformation, crystalline structure, the mechanism on conductivity enhancement was systematically elucidated. Based on the density functional theory, the synergistic effect of carboxy and phenol groups was verified as the origin of excellent doping-efficiency of these two biomass-derived modifiers. What is more, an ITO-free OLED device was successfully fabricated, where the PA or GtA-treated PEDOT:PSS was employed as transparent conducting electrode. Surprisingly, a remarkable improvement with regard to device performance was observed, in spite of the not good enough conductivity relative to ITO . Using the PA/GtA-modified electrodes, the external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency, and power efficiency of OLED devices is elevated by 50–300% at the brightness of 100 cd/m 2 for electronic display application. To reveal the underlying mechanism, the energy levels and the light extraction were examined and then ascribed to the paradox. The findings present a possible strategy to construct high-efficiency OLEDs relying on organic transparent electrodes and a promising application of biomass-derived chemicals.

The development of flexible thermoelectric devices (F-TEDs) for wearable electronics has gained significant attention due to their potential for sustainable energy harvesting. However, the practical use of flexible thermoelectric materials is limited by their stretchability and the complexities of device integration, particularly with regard to mechanical performance and fabrication. To address these issues, we developed a stretchable polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based thermoelectric composite and an all three-dimensional (3D) printing fabrication method, overcoming mechanical and manufacturing challenges to enable seamless integration in wearable electronics. The composite demonstrates superior tensile strength and stretchability, making it ideal for applications requiring both flexibility and robustness while retaining its thermoelectric properties. To enable precise and scalable device fabrication, we designed an ink with excellent viscoelasticity optimized for 3D printing. This ink allows for high-resolution, multimaterial patterning, facilitating the construction of intricate device structures through an all 3D printing approach. The combination of optimized ink formulation and all 3D printing technologies results in the fabrication of fully integrated stretchable thermoelectric devices with remarkable mechanical and electrical stability. At a temperature gradient of 40 K, the all-3D-printed PEDOT:PSS-based S-TEDs produce an open voltage of about 3.18 mV and a power density of about 6.78 nW cm–2. The fabricated devices exhibit stable thermoelectric performance under strains exceeding 50%, retaining over 90% of their output after 2000 stretching cycles. Furthermore, they demonstrate the capability to continuously power an LED under dynamic body motions, such as knee joint flexion, by harvesting body heat. This work offers a scalable and mechanically resilient platform for integrated thermoelectric energy harvesting, advancing the development of self-powered wearable electronics.

Circulating tumor cells in human peripheral blood plays an important role in cancer metastatic. In addition to the size-based and antibody-based cancer cells capture and separation, the electric characterization of cell is also important for rare cells detection, which is fatal in the point-of-care testing. Herein, a solution-gated carboxyl graphene mixed with PEDOT:PSS organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) biosensor for the in-situ detection of cancer cells is reported. Carboxyl graphene was used in this work to modulate the cancer cells morphology, which is differ significantly from the normal blood cells in the rare cancer cells detection. When the concentration of carboxyl graphene mixed in PEDOT:PSS was increased from 0 to 5 mg mL-1, Cancer cell area were increased from 218 μm2 to 530 μm2, respectively. The change of cell morphology can be detected by OECT. The negative charges of cancer cells can induce a positive effect shift of gate voltage, which is about 40 mV for spherical shape of cells. When the cell area increased, the transfer curve was shift to negative effect shift of gate voltage. Therefore, the sensor can realize in-situ detection of cancer cells morphology during the cell capture process, which can be used to identify whether the captured cells were deformable.

PEDOT:PSS/Si heterojunction solar cells (HSCs) with simple preparation process and low production costs has attracted a lot of attention. The adjustable color and good stability of devices will greatly expand their application scenarios. In this work, a liquid crystal molecule, 5,5'-bis(9-(3,4,5-tris(tetradecyloxy)benzyl)-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-2,2'-bithiophene (DT), is used as the additive and coating to fabricate colored and stable PEDOT:PSS/Si HSCs. The DT as the additive into PEDOT:PSS films can improve the conductivity of films and the junction quality of devices, leading to enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.24% for the uncolored devices. On based of PEDOT:PSS films adding DT, DT films with different thickness as coatings were spin-coated on the top surface of the uncolored devices, fabricating multi-color devices with the higher PCE, compared to the control devices. DT coatings can isolate air and absorb ultraviolet (UV) light, obtaining the enhanced stability for colorful devices in the air and under extreme UV irradiation. In addition, it was found that DT coatings can effectively avoid the poor uniformity of PEDOT:PSS films and disrupted linear structure of PEDOT chains under UV illumination. The work provides promising strategies for the preparation of colored and stable PEDOT:PSS/Si HSCs with high efficiency.

The commercialized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is usually used as hole transport layers (HTLs) in tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs). However, the further development has been restricted due to the acidity that could damage the stability of TPSCs. Although the PEDOT:PSS solution can be diluted by water to decrease acidity and reduce the cost of device fabrication, the electrical conductivity will decrease obviously in diluted PEDOT:PSS solution. Herein, potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) is selected to regulate the properties of PEDOT:PSS HTLs from the diluted PEDOT:PSS aqueous solution by water with a volume ratio of 1:1 to prepare efficient TPSCs. The effect of KSCN addition on the structure and photoelectrical properties of PEDOT:PSS HTLs and TPSCs have been systematically studied. At the optimal KSCN concentration, the TPSCs based on KSCN-doped PEDOT:PSS HTLs (KSCN-PSCs) demonstrate the champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.39%, while the reference TPSCs only show a champioan PCE of 6.70%. The further analysis demonstrates that the KSCN additive increases the electrical conductivity of HTLs prepared by the diluted PEDOT:PSS solution, improves the microstructure of perovskite film, and inhibits carrier recombination in TPSCs, leading to the reduced hysteresis effect and enhanced PCE in KSCN-PSCs. This work gives a low-cost and practical strategy to develop a high-quality PEDOT:PSS HTLs from diluted PE-DOT:PSS aqueous solution for efficient TPSCs.

Despite the fact that PEDOT:PSS has been successfully used in the field of flexible electronics, some of its applications in the domain of rigid conductive coating have been limited by the pricey cost and subpar mechanical properties (hardness, adhesion, and moisture absorption) of the commercially available Clevios™ PH 1000, as well as the poor conductivity, film formation, and mechanical properties of the self-made PEDOT:PSS. In the process of investigating the low-cost preparation of PEDOT-based conductive polymer coatings, we discovered that self-made PEDOT:PSS, a waterborne epoxy resin, and a bio-based epoxy curing agent can be blended uniformly to produce good film-forming conductive coatings. Later, the addition of KH560-modified nano-SiO2further improved the coating’s hardness while ensuring a modest increase in conductivity. Meanwhile, the inadequacies of the epoxy resin, which are not UV-resistant, were considerably improved by the synergistic action of PEDOT:PSS and the modified SiO2. The result is a low-cost method designed for creating conductive coatings that are UV-resistant and may be utilized for electromagnetic, electrothermal, and antistatic shielding applications. Such a PEDOT:PSS/epoxy composite system and its design approach will broaden the scope of PEDOT:PSS’s application and will inspire future research in and practical implementations of PEDOT:PSS-based conducting coatings. Keywords:waterborne epoxy resin;PEDOT:PSS;high hardness;conductive coatings;bio-based;UV-resistant

Owing to its electronic conductivity and electrochemical reactivity, polyaniline (PANI) can serve as the cathode for rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). However, it suffers from fast deactivation and thus performance deterioration because of spontaneous deprotonation during charge/discharge. Here, we report an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical reactivity and stability of the PANI-based cathode by constructing a π-electron conjugated system between PANI and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The impressive performance of the post-treated CNTs–PANI–PEDOT:PSS (t-CNTs–PA–PE) cathode is largely attributed to the −SO3–H+ groups in PSS, which acts as an internal proton reservoir and provides enough H+ for PANI’s protonation, thus promoting its electrochemical activity and reversibility. Besides, the strong interactions between PANI and PEDOT:PSS assist the stretching of π–π conjugation chains, bringing about enhanced electronic conductivity. Consequently, the t-CNTs–PA–PE cathode achieves a high capacity of 238 mA h g–1, together with good rate capability and long-term stability (over 1500 cycles with 100% Coulombic efficiency). Through exerting the freestanding t-CNTs–PA–PE, a flexible ZIB was further constructed with both outstanding electrochemical properties and superior high safety. This work demonstrates the availability of conducting polymer cathodes for high-performance ZIBs, fulfilling the need of flexible electronics.

As one of the most studied intrinsically conductive polymers (ICPs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), has been widely utilized in electronic applications. However, its relatively high cost, significant moisture absorption propensity, and poor mechanical properties (anti-scratch, hardness, adhesion, etc.) considerably limit its applicability. Herein, through facile oxidative polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) in the presence of waterborne epoxy emulsion (WEP) via one-pot preparation method, a series of waterborne PEDOT:PSS/epoxy dispersions were prepared. They were further combined with bio-based epoxy curing agent and various solvents such as propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PM) to reduce the curing agent’s viscosity and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to modulate the curing agent’s viscosity and the final coatings’ electrical conductivity. The surface morphology, bulk resistance, wettability, and water immersion stability of these coatings were investigated. Of them, PEDOT:PSS/epoxy/curing agent (DMSO) coating with optimal component ratio demonstrated advantages like enhanced electrical conductivity, improved water resistance (stable even after 45 days immersion), high hardness (2H), and strong adhesion ability (level 2) on glass substrates, etc. This work could facilitate the utilization of PEDOT:PSS in organic electronic fields like antistatic coatings, in a facile, reliable, and environmentally friendly manner.

Solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrids composing of MoO3 nanoparticles and PEDOT:PSS were developed for use in inverted organic solar cells as hole transporting layer (HTL). The hybrid MoO3:PEDOT:PSS inks were prepared by simply mixing PEDOT:PSS aqueous and MoO3 ethanol suspension together. A core–shell structure was proposed in the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid ink, where PEDOT chains act as the core and MoO3 nanoparticles connected with PSS chains act as the composite shell. The mixing with PEDOT:PSS suppressed the aggregation of MoO3 nanoparticles, which led to a smoother surface. In addition, since the hydrophilic PSS chains were passivated through preferentially connection with MoO3, the stronger adhesion between MoO3 nanoparticles and the photoactive layer improved the film forming ability of the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid ink. The MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid HTL can therefore be feasibly deposited onto the hydrophobic photoactive polymer layer without any surface treatment. The use of the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid HTL resulted in the optimized P3HT:PC61BM- and PTB7:PC61BM-based inverted organic solar cells reaching highest power conversion efficiencies of 3.29% and 5.92%, respectively, which were comparable with that of the control devices using thermally evaporated MoO3 HTL (3.05% and 6.01%, respectively). Furthermore, less HTL thickness dependence of device performance was found for the hybrid HTL-based devices, which makes it more compatible with roll-to-roll printing process. In the end, influence of the blend ratio of MoO3 to PEDOT:PSS on photovoltaic performance and device stability was studied carefully, results indicated that the device performance would decrease with the increase of MoO3 blended ratio, whereas the long-term stability was improved.

Skin-like pressure- and temperature-sensing capabilities are two important indicators for artificial human skins and flexible wearable sensors . However, artifact interference between measured signals has always been the technical difficulty in realizing multi-parameter real-time and highly sensitive monitoring. Herein, a stretchable and flexible pressure-temperature sensitive device based on 3D tubular graphene sponge/PEDOT:PSS composite is designed and fabricated. The hybrid Ag NWs/CNTs composite based embedded stretchable electrodes is selected as the signal transmission lines, which had the ability to resist tensile strain failure. The pressure-resistance module and the temperature-voltage module exhibits distinguishable features of detecting pressure and temperature stimulus simultaneously. The detection sensitivity of pressure and temperature stimuli is 43 kPa −1 and 24.5 μV/K, respectively. Moreover, a 3 × 3 sensor array is demonstrated to verify its monitoring effects in static and dynamic surroundings, illustrating its promising applications, such as health monitoring components, biomimetic soft wearable devices and human-machine interaction.
