Synergistic EMI shielding and impact resistance in nano-engineered aramid/carbon-PEEK composites via gradient architecture design

Nan Zhou,Long Xia,Jingwei Li,Hongyan Zhang,Naiyu Jiang,Wenbo Liu,Dongxing Zhang

To address the inherent trade-off between electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and impact resistance, this study proposes a hierarchical dual-scale decoupling strategy. (1) Macro-scale spatial decoupling: Asymmetric distribution of aramid fibers (AFs) for the impact-resistant layer and carbon fibers for the EMI shielding layer in polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix, (2) Micro-scale EMI decoupling: Dual-layer CF architecture comprising MXene/PEI-CB interfacial engineered absorption layer (top) and MXene modified high-conductivity reflection substrate (bottom). Specifically, the strategy synergizes with AF surface modification via PI/CNT-COOH/ANF sizing and the construction of the MXene/PEI-CB and MXene conductive network on the CF surface. This design effectively separates the low-conductivity impact-resistant layer (AF) from the high-conductivity shielding layer (CF) in space, thereby eliminating the concentration conflict associated with interface modification. As a result, compared to the CM/PEEK composite, the asymmetric gradient design (ACM/PEEK) leads to a 26.9 % increase in the absorption coefficient (A), with the overall shielding effectiveness reaching 38.04 dB. Simultaneously, the nano-engineered interface, in conjunction with the intrinsic toughness of AF, effectively dissipates impact stress. Under an 8 J impact load, the peak load increases by 102.25 %, and the damage area is significantly reduced. This study successfully overcomes the traditional trade-off between mechanical robustness and EMI shielding performance. It offers a novel paradigm for the development of lightweight, structure-function integrated electromagnetic protection materials suitable for extreme service environment.

Synergistic friction and wear reduction in PEEK/PTFE composites through P‑MoS₂ and K‑BN‑OH integration

Jiajia Cen,Shuangqi Li,Kai Chen,Dekun Zhang

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) possesses excellent corrosion resistance, moderate friction properties, and high‑temperature stability. However, under severe operating conditions, its coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate increase significantly, limiting broader application. In this work, P‑MoS₂ was synthesized in situ on a PEEK matrix using a hydrothermal method, while K‑BN‑OH was prepared via surface grafting with a coupling agent. Both fillers were then blended with a PEEK/PTFE matrix to produce a novel PEEK/PTFE/P‑MoS₂/K‑BN‑OH composite. Orthogonal experiments identified the optimal composition of PEEK/PTFE/P‑MoS₂, which exhibited the best overall performance. The effect of K‑BN‑OH content on the mechanical, thermal, and tribological properties of the composites was systematically studied. Tribological behavior under varying conditions was analyzed to elucidate wear mechanisms and filler synergy. Results show that the composite with 25% PTFE and 5% P‑MoS₂ achieved the most balanced performance: elastic modulus (1414.62 MPa), compressive strength (127.81 MPa), COF (0.108), and wear rate (1.81 ×10⁻⁶ mm³/N·h) decreased by 22.58%, 35.82%, 73.13%, and 59.78%, respectively, compared to pure PEEK, while creep strain (2.77%) increased by 95.62%. Further addition of 3% K‑BN‑OH enhanced mechanical and thermal properties: elastic modulus rose to 1520.13 MPa, compressive strength to 131.33 MPa, creep strain fell to 1.82%, and thermal conductivity reached 0.294 W/m·K. The average coefficient of friction(ACOF) declined to 0.094, though wear rate rose slightly to 2.26 × 10⁻⁶ mm³/N·h. Tribological tests revealed that wear rate increased with rotational speed, while ACOF showed a non‑monotonic trend, first decreasing and then increasing. With increasing load, both ACOF and wear rate initially decreased before rising, reaching minima at 20 N (0.077 and 2.09 ×10⁻⁶ mm³/N·h, respectively). Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated that PTFE formed a lubricating film through interfacial enrichment, while MoS₂ enhanced matrix ordering and promoted interfacial slip via π-π stacking and C-S bonding. In contrast, h-BN disrupted the synergistic lubrication network established between PTFE and MoS₂ due to its spatial blocking effect. This work systematically elucidates the synergistic mechanisms of fillers from the microscopic level to macroscopic performance, providing a theoretical basis for the design of high‑performance PEEK composites tailored to specific operating conditions.

Rigid-flexible synergistic interphase constructed via segmental engineering for concurrent strengthening and toughening of AF/PEEK composites

Yan Wang,Xianhui Dong,Hao Zhang,Na Li,Yan Wang,Yinjun Chen,Junrong Yu,Zuming Hu,Meifang Zhu

The abrupt modulus mismatch and physicochemical incompatibility across the interface of aramid fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (AF/PEEK) composites frequently induce stress concentration and micro-crack sensitivity under dynamic service conditions. Herein, a “rigid-flexible synergistic” interfacial engineering strategy is proposed to construct a stress-buffering interphase by tailoring the segmental stoichiometry of aqueous polyamic acid (PAA) sizing agents. Nanomechanical characterizations reveal that the optimized sizing transforms the abrupt boundary into a 549.8 nm modulus-gradient transition zone. It establishes a hierarchical energy-dissipation mechanism wherein rigid aromatic networks guarantee stress transmission, while aliphatic flexible segments dissipate excessive fracture energy through micro-elastoplastic yielding. Consequently, the modified composites successfully overcome the strength-toughness trade-off, delivering an 80.9% increase in interfacial shear strength, an 86.4% surge in interlaminar shear strength, 68.9% and 44.7% improvements in tensile and flexural strengths, respectively, as well as a 72.9% boost in impact toughness. Furthermore, the mechanically buffered boundary demonstrates exceptional dynamic tribological reliability under reciprocal sliding. This study provides a robust molecular engineering approach to concurrently optimize interfacial adhesion and toughness, offering broader insights into the design of highly durable composites for demanding service conditions.

Plant cell-inspired superhydrophobic PEEK nanofiber aerogel with superior mechanical properties for high-temperature oil-water separation

Yu Wang,Shiyu Wang,Yunhe Xing,Fei Xu,Jiahao Cui,Xiaoping Lu,Yanchao Yang,Xin Cong,Jiashuang Luan,Guibin Wang

Petroleum-contaminated wastewater and industrial effluents are increasingly threatening ecosystem. Aerogels possess immense potential for oil-water separation with their porous structure and high porosity. However, the inherent brittleness of conventional aerogels severely limits their practical utility under demanding conditions. Nanofiber aerogels (NFA) present a compelling alternative by integrating mechanical flexibility with a resilient 3D porous network. Inspired by the reversible water uptake and loss in plant cells, a superhydrophobic poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) nanofiber aerogel (Si@PEEK NFA) with a three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical cellular structure was constructed through directional freeze-drying and cross-linking. The biomimetic 3D hierarchical cellular structure exhibited exceptional compressive strength, achieved 1.1 MPa compressive stress (ε = 80%) and 80% retention after 100 cycles (ε = 50%). Notably, the Si@PEEK NFA retained stable and durable mechanical properties even in high-temperature solvent. Through hydrolysis-polymerization of methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS), lotus leaf-like nipple structure was constructed on PEEK NFA surface, which conferred excellent organic solvent absorption capacity and recyclability (94% retention after 20 cycles). Simultaneously, Si@PEEK NFA exhibited outstanding emulsion separation capabilities at both ambient and high-temperature, achieved nonane emulsion flux of 6970 L m −2  h −1 (room temperature) and 8200 L m −2  h −1 (90 °C), with separation efficiency both exceeding 99%. This work provides an effective strategy for the fabrication of mechanically robust nanofiber aerogels for emulsion separation under harsh condition.

Deprotonation-induced liquid-solid co-precipitation of AF/PEEK composites with high toughness and anti-wear performance

Mingyu Fu,Shiyao Lei,Xuan Luo,Linze Fan,Yifei Xiao,Xuqing Liu,Hong Yu,Cheng-Feng Du

Aromatic polyamide fibers (AF) offer high strength and low density but suffer from poor interfacial affinity with polyether ether ketone (PEEK) due to their high crystallinity and inert surface, leading to inhomogeneous products and degraded mechanical properties. Here, a deprotonation-induced liquid–solid co-precipitation strategy is proposed to fabricate homogeneous AF/PEEK composites. Deprotonation reversibly disrupts intermolecular hydrogen bonds in AF, enabling their dissociation in the liquid phase. Subsequent dispersion of PEEK powders followed by co-precipitation yields homogeneous composite powders, which are then sintered into bulk materials. The effects of AF content (0–20 wt%) on microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties were systematically investigated. At 10 wt% AF content, the composite achieves optimal performance, with a fracture toughness of 2.74 MPa·m 1/2 (97 % improvement over neat PEEK), a tensile strength of 83.64 MPa (18 % improvement) and a low wear rate of 3.44 ± 0.27 × 10 −6 mm 3 /N·m (42 % reduction). Mechanistic analysis reveals that deprotonation introduces carboxyl groups onto the AF surface and facilitates π-π stacking with PEEK, establishing strong interfacial bonding that effectively dissipates fracture energy. Additionally, uniformly dispersed AF promotes a stable protective tribolayer, suppressing debris spalling and third-body wear. This work achieves simultaneous optimization of AF dispersion and interfacial bonding, offering a new pathway for high-performance thermoplastic composites.

Simultaneously Achieving High-Temperature Resistance, EMI Shielding, and Mechanical Performance in CF/PEEK Composites via Interface Engineering

Yu Gao,Tianwen Yan,Rujing Shi,Yue Li,Jianfeng Zhou,Liying Zhang,Shu Zhu

The advancement of structural-functional thermoplastic composites with integrated electromagnetic shielding (EMI) and mechanical properties represents a key trend in aerospace. A key challenge is ensuring EMI performance and robust interfacial properties under the high processing temperatures of thermoplastic matrices. In this study, nickel plating on carbon fibers (CFs) was used to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composites. Sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) was then employed on the nickel-plated CFs to improve the interfacial performance between fibers and the PEEK matrix. The results showed that introducing 2% SPEEK increased the ILSS and tensile strength of CF-Ni/PEEK composites by 25.1% and 25.6%, respectively. Additionally, CF-Ni-SPEEK/PEEK composites showed an 18.8% improvement in EMI shielding effectiveness, achieving an ILSS (Interlaminar Shear Strength) of 46.4 MPa and EMI SE of 36.1 dB. These results provide valuable insights for designing advanced composites with combined structural and functional properties for aerospace applications.

Decoration with electronegative 2D materials based on chemical transition layers on CFR-PEEK implants for promoting osteogenesis

Wen Qin,Tong Xing,Jing Ma,Bin Tang,Weiyi Chen

Due to the unique lamellar structures , physicochemical and biological properties, electronegative two-dimensional (2D) materials have been explored for surface modification of carbon fibers reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) composite. Deposition of electronegative 2D materials based on a porous surface created by concentrated H 2 SO 4 has been studied to promote osteogenesis of CFR-PEEK. Generally, a porous layer will be pre-built on CFR-PEEK through severe corrosion of concentrated sulfuric acid to help the loading of 2D materials . However, the severe corrosion will greatly reduce surface mechanical strength , especially wear resistance and hardness, which increases the risk of collapse or even peeling of the bioactive coating by external force. Herein, instead of the severe corrosion, a mild corrosion by concentrated HNO 3 was applied to modify the surface of CFR-PEEK to pre-create a dense transition layer for the further surface decoration of electronegative 2D materials (graphene oxide (GO) and black phosphorus (BP), representatively). The results indicated that hardness and wear resistance of the dense transition layer were markedly higher than those of the porous layer. Although GO and BP can be both loaded on these two transition layers, –SO 3 H on the porous transition layer showed moderate cytotoxicity, while –NO 2 on the dense transition layer showed good cytocompatibility. The dense transition layer displayed higher mineralized deposition in vitro and new bone formation rate in vivo than the porous transition layer, moreover, GO and BP coatings improved osteogenesis. This work offers inspirations for the construction of electronegative 2D material coating on CFR-PEEK based on chemical transition layers.

Polydopamine-functionalized PEEK/PTFE composites with enhanced tribological, photothermal antibacterial, and mechanical properties for TMJ disc repair

Shuojie Cui,Yanru Hu,Lihui Meng,Zilin Zhou,Meng Wang,Panwen Liu,Yilin Yang,Moyuan Qu,Qingzhi Wu

The temporomandibular joint disc (TMJD) lacks intrinsic regenerative capacity, and to date, no effective or durable clinical treatments exist for its repair, presenting a major challenge in medical practice. In this study, a facile strategy has been developed to fabricate poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)@ polydopamine (PDA) composites with good biocompatibility and wear-resistant properties for TMJD replacement and repair. Biocompatible PDA molecules are introduced to improve interfacial affinity between PEEK and PTFE molecules. The results show that the mechanical properties of as-prepared PEEK/PTFE@PDA composite are adjusted to be close to those of TMJD. The tensile strength, compressive strength, and flexural strength of PEEK/PTFE@PDA composite are 73.63 ± 0.69 MPa, 63.28 ± 15.83 MPa, and 81.10 ± 3.80 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the friction coefficient and wear rate of PEEK/PTFE@PDA composite are 0.041 and 3.54 × 10 -7 mm³/Nm, which are reduced by 81.4% and 42.7% than those of PEEK, respectively. The antibacterial rates of PEEK/PTFE@PDA composite against Gram-positive bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli ) is 99.6 ± 0.1% and 92.5 ± 0.2% under near-infrared laser irradiation, respectively. This study paves the way for the application of PEEK-based composites in maxillofacial implants and provides a new strategy for solving temporomandibular joint disorder.

Dual-factor decoupling Strategy: Independent quantification of crystallization and infiltration effects in PAEK-sized CF/PEEK composites

Yuan Li,Shengdao Wang,Zhongxin Dong,LiangLiang Pei,Di Wu,Yanxu Lu,Yanchao Yang,Guibin Wang

While interfacial enhancement in carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites typically involves coupled mechanisms, the specific contributions of each mechanism remain poorly quantified. In this study, infiltration and crystallization are systematically decoupled and quantified by using poly aryl ether ketone (PAEK) sizing agents with controlled molecular weights (2000–8000) and distinct crystallization behaviors (para-crystalline and meta-amorphous). The roles of infiltration kinetics and interfacial crystallization are isolated by synthesizing PAEK polymers with identical chemical structures but varying intrinsic viscosities and crystallinities. Results reveal that crystallization contributes a consistent interfacial shear strength (IFSS) enhancement of approximately 26 MPa, nearly independent of molecular weight. In contrast, infiltration enhancement increases inversely with molecular weight, increasing from 13 MPa to 32 MPa as intrinsic viscosity decreases. Synergistic optimization achieves a record IFSS of 110.02 MPa in CF/PEEK composites. This work establishes a dual-factor decoupling strategy for quantifying interfacial mechanisms and provides a scalable approach for high-performance thermoplastic composite design.

Highly enhancing the interfacial strength of CF/PEEK composites by introducing PAIK onto diazonium functionalized carbon fibers

Xukang Wang,Zhigao Huang,Minlong Lai,Lin Jiang,Yun Zhang,Huamin Zhou

The weak interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) strongly hinders the true potential of composites in high performance applications. Herein, a novel heterocyclic derivative of PEEK was utilized as a linkage between CFs surface and PEEK matrix by a facile and high effective two-step method. CFs were firstly grafted with sodium sulfonate groups via aryl diazonium treatment, and then modified by the sizing agent poly(aryl indole ketone) (PAIK). This promising method takes advantages of strong cation-π interaction between PAIK and activated CFs, increased surface roughness of CFs, as well as good compatibility between PAIK and PEEK. As a result, the tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF/PEEK composites were both improved after aryl diazonium treatment and PAIK sizing. The highest ILSS obtained for the 1 wt% PAIK modified CF/PEEK composites, which was 62.97% higher than that of untreated CFs based composites. Finally, the interfacial reinforcing mechanism in modified composites was proposed by analyzing the interfacial microstructure. This research provided a promising approach to produce high performance CF reinforced thermoplastic polymeric composites.

The antibacterial and wear-resistant nano-ZnO/PEEK composites were constructed by a simple two-step method

Ting Wu,Xinyue Zhang,Kai Chen,Qin Chen,Zhenyang Yu,Cunao Feng,Jianwei Qi,Dekun Zhang

Although the polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has excellent comprehensive properties, its non-antibacterial and low wear-resistant limit the wide application in the field of artificial joint materials. In this paper, Nano-ZnO was generated in situ on the surface of PEEK powder by one-step hydrothermal method , which improved the binding force of Nano-ZnO and PEEK matrix. Then the PEEK-based nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending with the synthesized Nano-ZnO-PEEK powders and PEEK powders. The microstructure, mechanical, biological and tribological properties of PEEK-based nanocomposites were studied. The results showed that the compressive strength of PEEK-based nanocomposites can reach up to 319.2 ± 2.4 MPa. Both PEEK and PEEK-based nanocomposites were non-toxic to cells. Meanwhile, PEEK-based nanocomposites showed good antibacterial activity against E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and the antibacterial activity was better with the increase of Nano-ZnO content. In addition, when the Nano-ZnO content was 5%, the wear rate of PEEK-based nanocomposites was about 68% lower than that of pure PEEK materials. Thus, PEEK-based nanocomposites has a dual function of good antibacterial property and excellent wear resistance.

Biomimetic construction of 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites based on ladybug forewing structure for directional reinforcement

Xingyu Zhou,Wenying Dong,Shanshan Zhao,Jiacheng Zhang,Shengdao Wang,Yanchao Yang,Jiashuang Luan,Guibin Wang,Mei Zhang

3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites are a kind of composites with promising applications in multiple fields, such as implant materials, but their mechanical properties in the Z-axis and interlaminar are still weak at present. In this study, a bio-inspired reinforcement structure based on ladybug forewing was developed to achieve directed reinforcement of 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites. Carbon fiber yarns were stitched into the 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK preforms according to the set structure, and the bio-inspired CF/PEEK composites were obtained after hot pressing. The interlaminar and in-plane mechanical properties of the composites were investigated at different stitch lengths. The results showed that the addition of the bio-inspired structure greatly improved the interlaminar shear strength of the composites, reaching 111.30 MPa, an enhancement of 95.06%. The in-plane mechanical properties, including tensile, flexural, and compression, were also significantly improved to different degrees. The “structure-effect” relationship in the bio-inspired CF/PEEK composites was investigated, and the effectiveness of such a bio-inspired reinforcement structure was demonstrated. This new reinforcement strategy provides a new idea for the improvement of the mechanical properties of multi-stage carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin matrix composites. Highlights The in-plane and interlaminar mechanical properties of composites were simultaneously improved. Up to 95.06% improvement in interlaminar shear strength. A novel bionic strategy of directional reinforcement was developed. The “structure-effect” relationship in the composites was investigated.
