The effects of combined exposure to perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and heavy metals (HMs) including cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) on earthworms ( Eisenia fetida ) were investigated. The results have demonstrated that the concentrations of labile acid exchangeable Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cu in soil were enhanced in addition of PFAAs. With PFAAs, the uptake of Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cu in earthworms was increased compared to those without PFAAs with the order of Cd > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu. In the presence of HMs, the average biota-to-soil accumulation factors (BSAFs) of PFAAs in earthworms were decreased by 0.498–0.729 times for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 0.606–0.978 times for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), indicating decrease rates of PFOS were higher than those of PFOA. And different levels of HMs led to insignificant different responses on the inhibiting effects of PFAAs uptake in earthworms. The increase of Cd in fraction C (associated with cytosol) and decrease of PFAAs in fraction C and fraction P (associated with tissue fragments, cell membranes, and intact cells) especially for fraction C were revealed when they were combined, suggesting cytosolic PFAAs and Cd were susceptibly mutual effected. This study indicated that PFAAs and metals mutually affected their bioaccumulation and subcellular distribution in earthworms, which will help to understand the fate and risks of PFAAs and metals in co-contaminated soil.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is persistent in the environment. The activities of microorganisms alone are insufficient for the decomposition of PFOA, but microorganisms can contribute positively to the degradation of PFOA in synergistic systems. Herein, a synergistic system combining photocatalytic decay with microbial degradation of the transformation products was applied to degrade 500.0 μg L −1 PFOA. The microorganisms increased the total removed percentage by 30.7% to a final percentage of 79.7 ± 9.4% in comparison with the photocatalytic method alone. Moreover, an additional 44.2% of removed total organic carbon and additional defluorination percentage of 24.5% were obtained after the synergistic tests. The 16S RNA sequencing analysis indicated that Stenotrophomonas , Bacillus , Pseudomonas , and Brevundimonas were highly enriched in the functional microbial community , which was simultaneously shaped by photocatalysis and substances. This study found it would be feasible to use a synergistic method containing photocatalysis and a microbial community for the degradation of low-concentrations of PFOA, and the results provided a reference to modified the removal efficiency of the synergistic system by looking insight into the relationship between the functional microbial community and PFOA.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure severely affects the health of animals and humans, including early embryonic development, but the effective approaches to improve the quality of embryos exposed to PFOA have not been explored. Here, we report that nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) can be used to attenuate the impairment of mouse early embryos caused by PFOA exposure. We find that NMN supplementation maintains the normal spindle assembly and proper chromosome alignment by restoring the acetylation level of microtubule to enhance the mitotic capacity of embryos at zygotic cleavage stage under PFOA exposure. In addition, NMN exerts its beneficial effect by enhancing mitochondrial function and eliminating accumulated reactive oxygen species (ROS), which in turn alleviates DNA damage and apoptosis in PFOA-exposed 2-cell embryos. Moreover, NMN ameliorates the quality of PFOA-exposed blastocysts via recovering the octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (Oct4) expression, the actin dynamics, and the total number of cells. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that supplementation with NMN is a feasible strategy to restore the compromised early embryonic development under PFOA exposure, providing a scientific basis for application of NMN to increase the female fertility.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is widely distributed in nature, particularly in aquatic environments. Its bioaccumulation and toxicity in aquatic organisms can be affected by both the chemical status of PFOA in water and the physiology of the organism. However, research on the patterns of these effects is scarce. In this study, we investigated the influence of aqueous pH (pH 6, acidic; pH 7.5, neutral; pH 9, basic) and fish sex on PFOA uptake, clearance, and biochemical effects in crucian carp ( C. auratus ) using flow-through exposure. In the 17-d kinetic experiment, PFOA bioaccumulation adhered to a uniform first-order model in which PFOA uptake rates from water to blood and liver in acidic conditions were faster than those in other conditions, indicating possible acidic pH influence on PFOA uptake. PFOA clearance rates in these compartments of males were slower than in females, which was attributed to the notably stronger expression of Oat2 (organic anion transporter 2, responsible for reabsorption) in the kidneys of males. Similar responses were observed for peroxisome proliferation-related biomarkers at different pH levels and in different sexes. These biochemical responses were driven by the internal concentrations of PFOA. The inhibition acetylcholinesterase activity in the fish brain was closely linked to changes in P-glycoprotein content, demonstrating a protective relationship. Collectively, an aqueous pH lower than 7.5 might affect the uptake of PFOA by fish. The clearance discrepancies between the sexes highlight the importance of anion carriers for ionizable organic compounds in aquatic organisms.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its analogs, such as perfluorocaproic acid (PFHxA), perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA), and perfluoro(2-methyl-3-oxahexanoic) acid (GenX), present environmental contamination concerns due to their toxicity. To addressing this, in this study, we have explored the utility of thermoplastic polyurethane/polyethyleneimine (TPU/PEI) nanofibers , synthesized via electrospinning, for the efficient removal of PFOA and its analogs from aqueous solutions. Combining the positively charged amino groups of PEI and hydrophobicity of TPU potentially enhances adsorption. Further, the TPU/PEI nanofibers exhibit a distinctive nano-phase separation morphology, creating abundant adsorption sites conducive to PFAS binding. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that TPU/PEI nanofibers possess notable adsorption capacities for PFOA and its analogs. The observed adsorption capacities were ranked as follows: PFOA (0.931 mmol/g) > PFHxA (0.872 mmol/g) > PFBA (0.827 mmol/g) > GenX (0.771 mmol/g), thus showing a correlation with their respective octanol–water partition coefficient (K ow ) values. Both inorganic ions and organic matter exerted more pronounced adverse effects on the adsorption of PFBA and GenX than on those of PFOA and PFHxA. This observation can be linked to competitive adsorption with PFAS. Impressively, the TPU/PEI nanofibers maintained a high removal efficiency across multiple regeneration cycles, with more than 95 % adsorption capacity retained after five cycles. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the inaugural demonstration of utilizing a TPU and PEI blend for remediation of both long-chain and short-chain PFAS in highly polluted wastewater, positioning it as a promising, accessible material for such applications.

Jiangsu High-Tech Fluorochemical Industrial Park in Changshu City, Jiangsu Province, is the largest fluorochemical industrial park in Asia. The occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in surface water and widespread local plants was investigated in Jiangsu High-Tech Fluorochemical Industrial Park. Thirty-two target PFASs were detected in dissolved-phase, particle-phase and plant samples. The concentrations of total PFASs ranged from 1650 to 8250 ng/L in the dissolved-phase samples, 132 to 6810 ng/g dw in the particle-phase samples and 25.8 to 9460 ng/g dw in different plant tissues. Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), Perfluorooctanoate acid (PFOA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (6:2 FTCA) were predominant PFASs and contributed 80−91% to ΣPFAS in water samples. A total of 67 emerging PFAS were identified in all samples using nontargeted analysis.Typha orientalisshowed better accumulation ability, with an average ΣPFAS concentration of 3450 ng/g dw and the highest root concentration factor (RCF) of 171.Typha orientalis,Eichhornia crassipesandAlternanthera sessilishave potential for use in PFAS phytostabilization.

Due to the limited documentation on thermal treatment of per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), this study investigated the thermal degradation behavior, mechanisms, mineralization, and gaseous product toxicity of five environmentally ubiquitous PFAS, including perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonate (F 53B), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluoro-1-decanol (8:2 FTOH). Results showed that thermal stability of PFAS is dictated by their functional groups, presenting a stability hierarchy of sulfonic acid (PFOS, F 53B) > sulfonamide (PFOSA) > carboxylic acid (PFOA) > hydroxyl (8:2 FTOH). Thermal decomposition of these PFAS was initiated with cleavage of bonds connecting the functional group to the perfluorinated chain followed by stepwise chain-shortening reactions, yielding various perfluoroalkanes, perfluoroalkenes, and hydrofluoroalkanes. Calcium hydroxide remarkably enhanced fluorine mineralization into calcium fluoride and suppressed the formation of organofluorinated compounds during PFAS thermal treatment. Toxicity predictions indicated reduced acute toxicity for thermal degradation products compared to parent PFAS, but they still pose potential risks to human health. This implies that optimizing thermal treatment conditions is essential, focusing not only on mineralization efficiency but also on suppressing the formation of harmful by-products. These findings provide a systematic understanding of PFAS thermal decomposition and identify potentially hazardous gaseous by-products.

Invertebrates constitute the largest group of animals on Earth, accounting for approximately 97 % of all animal species. Although the heart of invertebrates could be a sensitive target for environmental pollution, potential cardiotoxicity for most contaminants has received little attention. In this study, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and thick-shell mussels ( Mytilus coruscus ) were used to investigate the effect of PFOA on cardiac performance and the potential underlying mechanisms. Heart beat monitoring demonstrated that four-week exposure to 0.5 and 5.0 μg/L of PFOA resulted in bradycardia and arrhythmia in thick-shell mussels. Moreover, considerably more triglyceride (TG) accumulation, higher lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and lipase (LPS) activities, and disruption of lipid metabolism-related genes were observed in the hearts of PFOA-exposed mussels. In addition, comparable adverse impacts were detected in mussels treated with proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonist whereas the PFOA-induced effects were fully or partially alleviated by PPARγ antagonist. Furthermore, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation revealed a high binding affinity of PFOA to the PPARγ of 12 invertebrates, including thick-shell mussels. In general, our data suggest that PFOA may pose a severe threat to cardiac performance of invertebrate species by inserting into the binding pocket of PPARγ, and thereby causing cardiac lipid metabolism disorders.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is potentially toxic and exceptionally stable attributed to its robust C F bond, which is hard to be removed by UV/TiO 2 systems. In this research, bismuth nanoparticle (Bi NP) modified titanium oxides (Bi/TiO 2 ) were synthesized by a simple photochemical deposition-calcination method and were applied as photocatalysts for the first time to degrade PFOA. The removal rate of 50 mg/L PFOA reached 99.3 % with 58.6 % defluorination rate after 30 min of irradiation via a mercury lamp. Bi/TiO 2 exhibited superior performance in PFOA degradation compared to commercial photocatalysts (TiO 2 , Ga 2 O 3 , Bi 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 ). In addition, Bi/TiO 2 showed high degradation activity under actual sunlight, achieved 100 % removal rate and 59.3 % defluorination rate within 2 h. Bi NPs increase the light trapping ability of Bi/TiO 2 and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs via local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which results in more photogenerated holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH). Combined with DFT calculations and intermediate detections, the degradation reaction is initiated from the oxidation of the PFOA carboxyl group via h + , followed by the loss of the CF 2 unit step by step with the participation of OH. This work presents a novel approach for the practical implementation of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs).

The trade-off between self-maintenance and reproduction has been explored wildly in reptiles. However, the effects of exogenous pollutants on the life history traits of reptiles have not been paid attention to. In the current study, lizards ( Eremias argus ), living in the soil polluted by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were selected as the main focus. Bodyweight, survival rate, clutch characteristics and biochemical analysis (immune response, lipid accumulation, sex steroid secretion, antioxidant level, and metabolomics) were investigated and the results revealed that lizards’ life-history trade-offs are gender-dependent: females were more inclined to choose a “Conservative” life-history strategy. After 60 days of exposure to PFOA, larger body weight, higher survival rate, stronger immune response, and lighter egg mass in females suggested that their trade-offs are more biased towards self-maintenance. Whereas, the “Risk” strategy would more popular among males: reduced body weight and survival rate, and suffering from oxidative damage indicated that males made little investment in self-maintenance.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a widespread and emerging organic contaminant of aquatic environments, has high bioaccumulation potential and high toxicity. Consequently, major concerns have been raised worldwide regarding the management of this pollutant in aquatic ecosystems. To thoroughly understand PFOA's toxic effects on aquatic organisms, systematic investigations were conducted on the cellular responses of Microcystis aeruginosa to the environmental concentrations of PFOA under various concentrations as well as phosphorus (P) conditions (concentrations and forms). The results showed that P conditions remarkably affected cyanobacterial growth as well as photosynthetic pigment content, triggered oxidative stress to disrupt the function and structure of the cell membrane, and caused changes in the extracellular and intracellular contents of microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Furthermore, PFOA (100 μg/L) was absorbed by cyanobacterial cells through the stimulation of the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by M. aeruginosa . After entering the cyanobacterial cells, PFOA inhibited photosynthesis, reduced P absorption, induced oxidative damage, lead to a loss of cell integrity evident in scanning electron microscope images, and increased mcy A gene expression to promote MC-LR production. Moreover, the limited P concentration and forms conditions led to increased PFOA absorption by cyanobacterial cells, which further upregulated mcy A gene expression and increased the risk of MC-LR diffusion into the aquatic environment. Our present study provided a theoretical basis and new ideas for understanding and addressing safety issues related to the presence of PFOA in aquatic environments with varying nutritional statuses.

Microplastics and PFOA are emerging contaminants that are widely present in groundwater, posing threats to human health and ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the remediation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in groundwater using waste coconut shell biochar in permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). Fixed-bed column experiments were conducted with different bed depths, flow rates, initial pollutant concentrations, and co-contamination conditions. Results demonstrated that coconut shell biochar exhibited an effective adsorption capacity, with an initial concentration of 1 mg/L, flow rate of 0.5 mL/min, and bed depth of 2.5 mm, removal efficiencies of 75.00 % for PFOA and 36.24 % for PS-MPs were achieved within 10 days. Increasing the depth of biochar from 1.5 mm to 5.0 mm enhanced the removal efficiencies (PFOA:96.43 %, PS-MPs:61.72 %) and extended breakthrough times (480 min for PS-MPs, 2410 min for PFOA). Lower flow rates (0.2 mL/min) extended hydraulic retention time, improving adsorption (both PFOA and PS-MPs were > 75 %), while higher pollutant concentrations accelerate PRB depletion and reduce removal efficiency. Additionally, the presence of PS-MPs exhibited dual effects on PFOA remediation: promoting adsorption at low concentrations but causing competitive inhibition at high concentrations. Meanwhile, increasing PFOA concentrations intensified electrostatic repulsion, which reduced the removal efficiency of PS-MPs from 36.24 % to 10.43 % as the PFOA concentration increased from 0 to 10 mg/L. Furthermore, among the tested models (Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and BDST), the Thomas model best fitted the fixed-bed adsorption data for PS-MPs, PFOA, and composite contamination.
