Solid-state poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte exhibits a low ionic conductivity at ambient conditions, and large interfacial resistance between PEO and electrodes obstructs its applications in lithium metal batteries. Heterogeneous solid electrolytes (HSEs) are an alluring solution for the exploitation of PEO. Herein, PEO/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/micron-sized Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) heterogeneous solid electrolytes are originally prepared to decrease the crystallinity of PEO and interfacial resistance between HSEs and electrodes. Heterogeneous solid electrolyte composed of PEO/PVDF-HFP/5% micron-sized LATP (PPL-5) exhibits superior electrochemical properties in ionic conductivity (3.01 × 10 −5 S cm −1 ), lithium transference number (0.55) at 30 °C, and a broad potential window (5.31 V). Li/PPL-5/Li symmetric cell displays a relatively stable potential response during 800 h cycling, authenticating long-term compatibility between the as-prepared electrolyte and lithium metal. LiFePO 4 (LFP) is used as a cathode to test the chemical and electrochemical stability of PPL-5. The discharge capacity of LFP/PPL-5/Li coin cell maintains 97.9 mAh g −1 at 0.8 C after 500 cycles with capacity retention of 86.7%. Such excellent performance of PPL-5 can be ascribed to the reduction of crystallinity of PEO and the improvement of the interfacial contact between electrolyte and electrodes, when PVDF-HFP and micron-sized LATP are simultaneously incorporated with PEO electrolyte.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have achieved a triumph in the market of portable electronic devices since their commercialization in the 1990s due to their high energy density. However, safety issue originating from the flammable, volatile, and toxic organic liquid electrolytes remains a long-standing problem to be solved. Alternatively, composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) have gradually become one of the most promising candidates due to their higher safety and stable electrochemical performance. However, the uniform dispersity of ceramic filler within the polymer matrix remains to be addressed. Generally, all-solid-state lithium metal batteries without any liquid components suffer from poor interfacial contact and low ionic conductivity, which seriously affect the electrochemical performance. Here we report a CSE consisting of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), polydopamine (PDA) coated Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) (denoted as PDA@LLZTO) microfiller, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). Introducing only 4 μL of liquid electrolyte at the electrode|electrolyte interface, the CSE-based cells exhibit high ionic conductivity (0.4 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 25 °C), superior cycle stability, and excellent thermal stability. Even under low temperatures, the impressive electrochemical performance (78.8% of capacity retention after 400 cycles at 1 C, 0 °C, and decent capacities delivered even at low temperature of −20 °C) highlights the potential of such quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries as a viable solution for the next-generation high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Solid-state electrolytes can guarantee the safe operation of high-energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, major challenges still persist with LMBs due to the use of solid electrolytes, that is, poor ionic conductivity and poor compatibility at the electrolyte/electrode interface, which reduces the operational stability of solid-state LMBs. Herein, a novel fiber-network-reinforced composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) was designed by combining an organic plastic salt (OPS) with a bicontinuous electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF–HFP)/Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) membrane. The presence of LLZO in the composite helps to promote the dissociation of FSI– from OPSs. Subsequently, the dissociated FSI– is then involved in the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the lithium anode via a reductive decomposition reaction, which was affirmed by theoretical calculations and experimental results. Due to the LiF-rich SEI layer, the Li/Li symmetric cell was able to demonstrate a long cyclic life of over 2600 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm–2. More importantly, the as-prepared CPE achieved a high ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 25 °C, and the Li/LiFePO4 cell based on the CPE exhibited a high discharge capacity and 83.3% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1.0 C. Thus, the strategy proposed in this work can inspire the future development of highly conductive solid electrolytes and compatible interface designs toward high-energy density solid-state LMBs.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have sparked attention due to their superior mechanical robustness and excellent security in solid-state lithium batteries. However, intrinsic limitations, such as poor ionic transport properties and large interface impedance, severely hinder their practical applications. Herein, a novel composite solid electrolyte (PLHL-CSE) membrane, which consists of poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO), was prepared by solution-casting technique. The incorporation of HPMC into PVDF-HFP-based electrolyte played crucial roles in reducing the crystallinity of PVDF-HFP, promoting the dissociation of lithium salt, and increasing the amount of mobile Li + . With synergistic effects of HPMC and LLZTO, the mechanical and electrochemical performance of PVDF-HFP-based electrolytes were greatly enhanced. The obtained PLHL-CSE membrane showed better mechanical strength (3.0 MPa), enhanced ionic conductivity (0.25 mS/cm at 25 °C), greater lithium-ion transference number (0.7), and broadened electrochemical window of 5.0 V (vs. Li + /Li) than the PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI solid polymer electrolyte (PL-SPE) membrane. After 300 cycles at 1 C, the assembled LiFePO 4 /PLHL-CSE/Li cell with PLHL-CSE membrane as the hybrid composite solid electrolyte displayed a high capacity retention (95.6%). In addition, the positive effects of HPMC and LLZTO on promoting the generation of stable SEI and the uniform lithium deposition were also confirmed by the SEM results of cycled lithium metals. These findings point to the good potential of PLHL-CSE membrane as a hybrid composite solid electrolyte for practical application in lithium batteries.

Solid state lithium-ion batteries (SSLIBs) with high safety and high energy density are promising novel energy storage devices. However, the performance of SSLIBs would descend under a wide work temperature range. A flexible ceramic-polymer composite solid electrolyte membrane was created by solution casting to obtain good stability of SSLIBs at different temperatures. The PVDF-HFP-PES-LiClO 4 -Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) composite solid electrolyte shows excellent electrochemical performances in the temperature range of 20 to 60 o C. The ionic conductivity of PVDF-HFP-PES-LiClO 4 -LLZTO (PPLL) is 4.26 × 10 -4 , 4.97 × 10 -4 , 5.26 × 10 -4 , 5.59 × 10 -4 and 5.97 × 10 -4 S cm -1 at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 o C, respectively. The PPLL was employed in LiFePO 4 (LFP)/PPLL/Li batteries, and their properties were tested at 0.2 C. The test results show that the LFP/PPLL/Li battery has a good charge-discharge, rate, and cyclic performance at 20 - 60 o C. After 150 cycles with 0.2C at 30 o C and 60 o C, the capacity retention rates of 75.6% and 86.4%, respectively. This work provides an effective strategy for designing and preparing SSLIBs.

With the development of modern communication devices, the demand for intelligent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials that dynamically respond to environmental changes is ever-growing. However, the design and fabrication of high-performance EMW absorbing materials with adapt features remains challenging. Here, we report a temperature-responsive composite comprising VO 2 nanowires (NWs) and polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (PVDF-HFP). Benefiting from the phase transition characteristics of VO 2 and the high aspect ratio of NWs, the composite demonstrates two distinct off/on switchable EMW absorbing performances as the temperature increases at low filler loading of VO 2 . The composite with 10 wt% VO 2 NWs transitions from transmission to absorption, showcasing a maximum change in reflection loss (RL) and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) values of 53.09 dB and 4.85 GHz at the thin thickness of 2.5 mm and 2 mm, respectively. While the composite with 30 wt% VO 2 NWs shows a switch from absorption to reflection with the highest ΔEAB and ΔRL values of 3.59 GHz (1.5 mm) and 44.29 dB (2.5 mm), respectively. Additionally, radar cross-sectional (RCS) simulations verify the intelligent EMW absorbing performance of the composite. The work provides an effective and sustainable approach to harness the potential of VO 2 for developing tunable and high-performance wave-absorbing materials.

Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) combine the advantages of solid polymer electrolytes and inorganic solid electrolytes, making them promising candidates for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, current CSEs exhibit deficiencies such as low ionic conductivity, lithium dendrite growth, and susceptibility to damage of the electrolyte membrane, which hinder their practical applications. Therefore, designing composite solid electrolytes with novel structures is crucial for enhancing the overall performance of batteries. In this study, PVDF-HFP was chosen as the polymer electrolyte matrix, while a network structure filled with two-dimensional MOF (UMCM-309a) served as the skeleton. The composite solid electrolyte (CSE) was prepared using a simple solution casting method, incorporating PVDF-HFP, lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI), and two-dimensional MOF (UMCM-309a). The developed PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI/MOF (PLM) electrolyte demonstrates remarkable ionic conductivity of 5.7 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 60 °C, along with an extensive electrochemical stability window of 4.8 V. The Li|10% PLM CSE|LiFePO 4 cell exhibits exceptional cycling performance and longevity, maintaining 95% capacity retention after 1000 cycles of stable operation at 60 °C and a rate of 1 C. Furthermore, the Li | Li symmetric cell illustrates strong interfacial compatibility, achieving stable cycling for 1100 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 . Therefore, the PLM CSE composite provides a straightforward and effective approach for achieving high-performance lithium batteries, facilitating ultra-stable operation in solid-state lithium metal batteries. Sc and B doping enlarges the electrolyte lattice and reduces grain boundaries. • The LASBTP003 electrolyte shows an optimal ionic conductivity of 0.882 mS/cm. • PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 SCE displays enhanced electrochemical performance. • Li/SCE/ LiFePO 4 full cell shows an excellent long-term cycling stability. NASICON-type Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), with excellent air stability, a wide electrochemical window and low cost, is an attractive electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its low electrical conductivity and poor interface contact impede its practical applications. Herein, LATP was doped with Sc and B elements, and the properties of the resultant LATP-based solid electrolytes were thoroughly studied. The structural characterization suggests that doping of Sc and B densifies the electrolyte structure, enlarges the lattice, and reduces grain boundaries. The optimized Li 1.3 Al 0.24 Sc 0.03 B 0.03 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LASBTP003) achieves a high ionic conductivity of 8.82 × 10 −4 S/cm, equivalent to 4-fold that of pure LATP. The composition of LASBTP003 electrolyte with PVDF-HFP and SN results in PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-LASBTP003 solid composite electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity of 8.89 × 10 −5 S/cm, attributed to the reduced PVDF-HFP crystallization and established lithium-ion migration pathways at LASBTP003/PVDF-HFP interface. PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 also displays a wide electrochemical window of 4.85 V and a high Li-ion transference number of 0.41. The Li/ PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003/Li symmetric battery delivers a long cycling of 1800 h under a current density of 0.1 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, LiFePO 4 /PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003/Li full cell delivers a long-term cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 86.92% after 1000 cycles at 0.5C. Overall, the proposed PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 has great potential for LIB applications. Download: Download high-res image (195KB) Download: Download full-size image

To improve the safety performance of lithium-ion batteries, the research of composite separator with high temperature resistance is one of the strategies. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene)/cellulose/carboxylic titanium dioxide (PVDF-HFP/cellulose/C-TiO 2 ) composite separator is prepared by the phase inverse method. The composite separator has higher porosity (63.65%) and electrolyte uptake (210.3%) than PP separator, exhibiting good heat resistance that can keep its shape and size under 160 °C for 0.5 h. Additionally, it has a superior ionic conductivity of 1.24–1.49 mS cm −1 and a lower charge transfer impedance at a room temperature, which brings about better cycle and rate performance. Promisingly, the cell assembled with the PVDF-HFP/cellulose/C-TiO 2 composite separator has a high electrochemical working window and a high current charge of ability, and can undergo 10 charge-discharge cycles normally under 120 °C. The PVDF-HFP/cellulose/C-TiO 2 composite separator has promising potentials for high current and voltage charging, which can improve the safety performance of the lithium-ion battery.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are flexible, low cost, and easily scalable for battery manufacturing. These merits make SPEs one of the most practical solid-state electrolytes. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), which has good mechanical properties and good thermal stability, is considered a promising polymer for SPEs. However, PVDF-HFP is unstable due to the dehydrofluorination side reaction when PVDF-HFP-based electrolytes cycle with Li metal. This reaction leads to the deterioration of the electrolyte–electrode interface. In this work, the PVDF-HFP polymer electrolyte is modified with LiOH during the synthesis of SPEs (pre-dehydrofluorination). The modified electrolyte delivers significantly enhanced stability toward the Li metal anode. The electrochemical stable window is extended from 4.75 to 5.00 V, and the stable cycle time of the galvanostatic test of Li symmetric cells at 0.1 mA cm–2 increases from about 100 h to over 500 h. Ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicate that the polymer degradation is suppressed after modification, and a stable interface containing more LiF and inorganic sulfur compounds forms between the electrolyte and Li metal; the interface could effectively suppress Li dendrite growth. Combining electrochemical results with ex situ SEM and XPS analysis, it is observed that the pre-dehydrofluorination is the reason for inhibiting polymer degradation and suppressing Li dendrite growth toward the Li metal anode. These findings will promote the development of safe all-solid-state Li metal batteries.

High ionic conductivity and good interface compatibility have always been two major bottlenecks for solid-state electrolytes. Herein, a composite electrolyte membrane comprising poly (propylene carbonate), PVDF-HFP and Li 6 · 3 La 3 Zr 1 · 4 Ta 0 · 6 O 12 is successfully prepared via electrospinning. With the assistance of succinonitrile, the synthesized solid-state electrolyte exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.32 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature), oxidation potential up to 4.5 V vs Li/Li + and high Li + transference number (0.81). This desirable performance is attributed to the combination of PPC with good Li + conduction ability and PVDF-HFP with excellent mechanical properties, forming a continuous transport framework within the electrolyte. The introduced active fillers and small molecular additive not only benefit to fast Li + mobility, but also reinforce the stability towards Li metal. Li symmetric cell using the solid-state electrolyte can last for 800 h at a current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential. The NCM811 cell using the electrolyte membrane shows high initial discharge specific capacity (184.3 mAh g −1 at 1 C) and good capacity retention (80.1% after 300 cycles at 30 °C).

Polymer electrolytes have become widely popular on account of their low expenses, reduced weight, simple processing, and excellent safety features. However, polymer electrolytes have yet to find use in commercial batteries because of their limited mechanical durability and poor ionic conductivity . In this paper, an ultra-stable cycles and interfaces blending polymer electrolyte (BPE) suitable for all solid-state Li metal batteries was prepared by blending three polymers: polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Microstructure characterization showed numerous amorphous areas with strong interfacial strength of the BPE. The BPE3 exhibited a maximum of 15.65 MPa in tensile strength. BPE2 have excellent electrochemical performance, such as wide electrochemical windows (up to 4.7 V vs Li/Li + ), high lithium ion transference numbers (up to 0.75), high ion conductivity (up to 1.87 × 10 -4 S cm −1 at 60 °C), and excellent interface stability. By assembling all state-solid LiFePO 4 /BPE2/Li batteries for electrochemical testing, BPE2 exhibit high electrochemical characteristics. BPE2 discharge specific capacity is as high as 154.7 mAh g −1 at 1C. The BPE2 underwent 200 cycles at 0.5C and 400 cycles at 1C, with capacity retention rates of 95.7 % and 96.6 %, respectively. BPE is a promising electrolyte candidate for flexible lithium metal batteries.
