Dual ligands-assisted oxidation strategy for suppressing dark current in PbS quantum dot infrared photodetectors

Tianyu Luo,Sisi Liu,Aoshen Wei,Junlin Wang,He Li,Yong Xia,Xiaoyan Wen,Haifei Lu,Ming-Yu Li

Lead sulfide colloidal quantum dots (PbS CQDs) are potential optoelectronic semiconductor materials for short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetectors owing to their tunable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, and monolithic integrability with silicon readout circuits. However, incomplete surface passivation of {100} facets in large-size PbS CQDs (diameter > 4 nm) and ubiquitous halide ions migration in CQDs films have resulted in high dark current in PbS CQDs SWIR photodetectors. Herein, a dual ligands passivation combined with in-situ oxidation strategy is proposed to improve the surface passivation of CQDs and suppress the ions migration process. The advanced dual ligands could effectively passivate the polar {111} and non-polar {100} facets to reduce trap states in CQDs films, while the subsequently controllable thermal process could restrict the ions migration by interrupting the transport pathway to improve stability. The resultant PbS CQD infrared photodetectors exhibit remarkably reduced dark current and maintain almost unchanged photoresponse. The optimized photodetector exhibits a responsivity of 22.88 mA/W and a specific detectivity of 1.14 × 10 11 Jones at 1300 nm under a 1 V bias, demonstrating an alternative approach toward high-performance SWIR photoelectronic devices.

Xi Liu,Yanhong Ji,Yinjie Sun,Ming Jing,Zunbo Han,Yunfei Song,Yangzhen Liu,Haoran Chen,Benqiao He

Biodegradable membranes can be decomposed after use, aligning seamlessly with the principles of eco-friendly environmental conservation prevalent in modern society. In this study, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/TiO 2 hybrid membranes have been prepared by adding nano-TiO 2 into biodegradable PBS. The impact of nano-TiO 2 on the structure, properties, and degradability of membrane are investigated. The incorporation of nano-TiO 2 has a favorable influence on the mechanical properties of membrane, with tensile strength increased by 80.37 %. When the TiO 2 content is 3 wt%, the hybrid membrane demonstrates a significant enhancement in pure water flux, reaching 56.41 L·m −2 ·h −1 . This flux is 6 times greater than that of pure PBS membrane. Meanwhile, the BSA rejection remains at approximately 95 %. Moreover, the flux recovery of membrane increases from 71.52 % to 96.19 %, and total fouling decreased from 57.09 % to 38.05 %. In long-term use, the permeation flux remains stable between 52.14 and 59.76 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and the BSA rejection is about 93.49 %. Consequently, the membrane maintains its fundamental performance. After service, hybrid membranes can be degraded immediately in alkali solution. This study provides a feasible solution for the development of green, efficient and degradable membranes for wastewater treatment, and opens up a new way for circular economy in membrane technology.

Heterostructural CsPbX3-PbS (X = Cl, Br, I) Quantum Dots with Tunable Vis–NIR Dual Emission

Xianju Zhang,Xianxin Wu,Xiaoyu Liu,Gaoyu Chen,Yongkai Wang,Jianchun Bao,Xiangxing Xu,Xinfeng Liu,Qi Zhang,Kehan Yu,Wei Wei,Jingjing Liu,Jun Xu,Hua Jiang,Peng Wang,Xun Wang

Perovskite and chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) are important nano semiconductors. It has been a challenge to synthesize heterostructural QDs combining perovskite and chalcogenide with tailorable photoelectronic properties. In this report, heterostructural CsPbX3-PbS (X = Cl, Br, I) QDs were successfully synthesized via a room temperature in situ transformation route. The CsPbX3-PbS QDs show a tunable dual emission feature with the visible and near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) corresponding to CsPbX3 and PbS, respectively. Typically, the formation and evolution of the heterostructural CsPbBr3–PbS QDs with reaction time was investigated. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) was applied to illuminate the exciton dynamics in CsPbBr3–PbS QDs. The mild synthetic method and TAS proved perovskite to PbS energy transfer may pave the way toward highly efficient QD photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Solvent-mediated surface modification of electron transport layers for efficient PbS quantum dot solar cells

Noor Zaman,Yiqun Li,Tongjun Zheng,Jing Zhou,Abdul Basit,Haider Ali Tauqeer,Biniyam Zemene Taye,Muhammad Salman Yousaf,Shizi Luo,Zheng Liang,Xiaoli Chen,Lavrenty G. Gutsev,Ritabrata Sarkar,Andrey S. Vasenko,Gennady L. Gutsev,Xueqing Xu

Interface engineering plays a crucial role in determining the performance of lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells. Defects and surface states at the PbS–electron transport layer (ETL) interface significantly influence charge extraction and recombination processes. ZnMgO nanoparticles are widely employed as ETLs due to their high electron mobility and facile synthesis; however, excess surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups introduce interfacial trap states that impede efficient electron extraction. In the present work, we have overcome these limitations through solvent-mediated surface modification of ZnMgO surfaces, which utilizes a simple toluene treatment. Untreated ZnMgO films have high surface energies and low wettability, resulting in a lack of uniform coverage of PbS CQD films, which leads to an undesirable increase in the rate of recombination. Toluene treatment allows the surface hydroxyl groups to be removed, which was validated by morphological analysis and also analyzed via density functional theory calculations. Such surface modification is shown to suppress trap-assisted recombination and promotes efficient transfer of electrons, which leads to a significant improvement in Voc, Jsc, and FF. As a result, the power conversion efficiency increased from below 1% in untreated devices to 6.73% upon toluene treatment of the ZnMgO ETL. These findings offer a straightforward and powerful approach to streamline efficient ETL/CQD interface engineering with minimized interfacial flaws and realize the full potential of PbS CQD solar cells in high-efficiency photovoltaic applications.

Two-dimensional PtPb-PbS heterostructure enables improved kinetics and highlighted bifunctional antipoisoning for methanol electrooxidation

Liu Liangbin,Tang Chongyang,Bu Lingzheng,Xiao Xiangheng,Huang Xiaoqing

Two-dimensional (2D) platinum (Pt)-based nanomaterials are considered as the ideal fuel cell catalysts, while their rational synthesis associated with phase control remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we firstly design the novel 2D Pt-lead-sulphur heterophased nanosheets (PtPbS HPNSs) as efficient high-toleration electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). They exhibit much higher activity and more highlighted bifunctional antipoisoning abilities than PtPb NSs and commercial Pt/C. Further density functional theory (DFT) simulation verifies that the decreased electron density of Pt sites worked by Pb and S makes CO intermediate favorable to desorb, avoiding the formation of CO*-polluted Pt sites. Simultaneously, this heterophased interface effectively weakens the adsorption of S 2− -species and improves the S-poisoning tolerance, showing a route to realize nearly innoxious catalysis. The present work highlights the importance of heterophase control in tuning antipoisoning property for 2D Pt-based nanomaterials, which is key for the rational design of efficient fuel cell anodic catalysts.

Preparation of a Highly Efficient PbS Electrode and Its Application in Quantum Dots-Sensitized Solar Cells

ZHANG Jing-Bo,LI Pan,YANG Hui,ZHAO Fei-Yan,TANG Guang-Shi,SUN Li-Na,LIN Yuan

To improve the light-to-electric conversion efficiency of quantum dots-sensitized nanocrystalline thin-film solar cells, a PbS electrode with high electrocatalytic activity toward polysulfide electrolyte was prepared by successively treating Pb foil in acid and polysulfide solutions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were performed to evaluate the electrocatalytic activity of the prepared PbS electrode. Based on the EIS results, the temperature and time to treat the Pb foil in the acid solution were optimized. The PbS electrode prepared under the optimized conditions was used as a counter electrode to fabricate a quantumdotssensitized solar cell with a CdSe quantum dots-sensitized TiO2 nanocrystalline thin film as the photoanode and polysulfide solution as the electrolyte. Both the electrocatalytic activity and light-to-electric conversion properties of the PbS electrode prepared from acid treatment of Pb foil for the optimized temperature and time are superior to those of electrodes prepared by other reported methods. In our method, the treatment time is considerably less but the PbS counter electrode maintains a superior catalytic activity compared with other methods. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were performed to demonstrate the formation process of PbS, and the catalytic enhancement mechanism of the prepared PbS electrode is discussed.

Monitoring Neovascularization of Malignant Solid Tumors with Horseradish Peroxidase-Functionalized Near-Infrared-II PbS Quantum Dots

Lu-Lu Chen,Zhi-Gang Wang,Hao Zhang,Li-Ming Chen,Liang Zhao,Zhen-Ya Liu,Wei Zhao,Lin-Han Jiang,Ai-Xin Ma,Xiaohui Yang,Shu-Lin Liu,Shiwu Zhang,Dai-Wen Pang

The growth and metastasis of malignant solid tumors depend closely on new blood vessels. Vasculogenic mimicry provides a special pathway of blood supply during the early growth of malignant tumors, and real-time monitoring of its occurrence and development in vivo is important to clinical applications. However, there are few labels with sufficient brightness and stability in vivo to achieve high spatiotemporal resolution imaging of deep tissue for noninvasive optical detection of vasculogenic mimicry in tumor tissues. In this study, we constructed a high-brightness fluorescent label with fluorescence in the near-infrared-II region, which can be used not only for in vivo tumor imaging but also for tissue section imaging. Real-time high-resolution imaging of tumor vessels has been achieved with PbS quantum dots (QDs) surface-coupled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) (HRP-QDs) by taking advantage of the low background autofluorescence of tissue at the near-infrared-II wavelength for in vivo and tissue section imaging. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of early blood supply patterns of tumor growth enables monitoring neovascularization to accurate noninvasive identification of benign and malignant solid tumors.

Constructing Heterostructural CsPbBr3-PbS Quantum Dots for High-Stability Solar Cells with Efficient Infrared Energy Harvesting

Jiayi Guan,Jian Ni,Xin Liu,Rufeng Wang,Minghao Hu,Juan Li,Hongkun Cai,Jianjun Zhang

Inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have become a research hotspot in recent years owing to their outstanding optoelectronic properties. Compared to CsPbI3, CsPbBr3 is valued for its higher thermal and phase stability and larger device open-circuit voltage. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy for heterostructural CsPbBr3-PbS QDs. Then, we successfully verify the formation of the heterostructures using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, in which the corresponding interplanar distance and a noticeable angular shift are observed due to the growth of PbS on CsPbBr3 QDs. As a result, the CsPbBr3 QDs are connected by the PbS QDs, and the Pb suspension bonds on the outer surface of the CsPbBr3 QDs are also passivated. This contributes to the high stability of the heterostructural CsPbBr3-PbS QD dispersion and solar cells. Moreover, taking advantage of the surface passivation and bridging, the heterostructural CsPbBr3-PbS QD solar cells show a significant improvement in the efficiency of the devices. This work might eventually provide a reference method for the construction of all-inorganic quantum dot heterostructures and open up an avenue for improving the stability of all-inorganic CsPbX3 nanocrystals for use in photovoltaic and displays.

Interconnection layer engineering and configuration matching for high-performance perovskite/PbS quantum dot tandem solar cells

Afei Zhang,Salman Ali,Gomaa Mohamed Gomaa Khalaf,Long Chen,Xinzhao Zhao,Jianbing Zhang,Kun Xu,Hsien-Yi Hsu,Li Wang,Mingyu Li,Haisheng Song

Wide-spectrum responsive monolithic perovskite/PbS QD tandem solar cells • RPD-ITO ICL reduces transport barriers and avoids thermal damage to subcells • Monochromatic offset light diagnosis pinpoints subcell photocurrent mismatch • Substrate tandem architecture eliminates solvent-induced perovskite degradation • Substrate perovskite/PbS QD tandems achieves a record efficiency of 21.14%. Emerging tandem photovoltaics offer a promising route for cost-effective solar energy harvesting through high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Although perovskite/PbS quantum dot (QD) tandem solar cells (TSCs) enable broad-spectrum light harvesting, inefficient charge recombination within interconnection layer (ICL) and structural incompatibility cause serve efficiency losses. Herein, we developed monolithic n-i-p perovskite/PbS QD TSCs incorporating a simplified indium tin oxide (ITO)-based ICL. Compared with Au/atomic layer deposition (ALD)‑tin oxide (SnO 2 ) counterpart, the ITO-based ICL exhibits excellent processing compatibility, favorable band alignment, and reduced carrier transport barriers. Compared to the control device, the ITO-based perovskite/PbS QD tandem device demonstrated an improved efficiency from 17.34% to 20.65%, with the fill factor increasing from 65.30% to 72.73%. The corresponding four-terminal tandems also reached a PCE of 26.34%. Furthermore, to address the current mismatch in the superstrate configuration, we engineered a substrate architecture featuring a self-assembled monolayer-integrated ICL. Benefiting from improved current matching, the substrate TSCs achieved a record PCE of 21.14%, with the open-circuit voltage increasing from 1.616 V to 1.718 V. This research demonstrates that matching ICLs and tandem configurations is essential for advancing the performance horizons of solution-processed hybrid perovskite/PbS QD TSCs. Breaking the Passivation-Band-Alignment Trade-Off in PbS Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodiodes via Gradient Doping

Luna Xiao,Shuai Zou,Chengjie Deng,Jingjing Wang,Juntao Pi,Qiyuan Guo,Yuhan Zhang,Hao Li,Xing Zhou,Sen Li,Jianbing Zhang,Jing Liu,Liang Gao,Jiang Tang

Solution-processed PbS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising materials for short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetection, yet extending the response to longer wavelengths is commonly accompanied by more severe surface trapping and unfavorable band alignment, which together limit carrier extraction and device sensitivity. Here, we report a post-deposition gradient doping strategy based on antimony trifluoride (SbF 3 ) to simultaneously address these two bottlenecks in 1650 nm PbS CQD photodiodes. The SbF 3 treatment creates a depth-dependent n -type doping profile in the halide-passivated CQD film, while F − coordination with undercoordinated Pb 2+ sites suppresses deep surface trap states and nonradiative recombination. Meanwhile, the resulting graded electronic structure reduces the conduction-band offset at the CQD/electron-transport-layer interface and establishes a more favorable quasi-type-II junction for electron extraction. As a result, the optimized p-i-n photodiodes deliver an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 56.5% at 1650 nm under zero bias, a low dark current density of 31 nA cm −2 at −0.1 V, and a specific detectivity ( D *) of 5.62 × 10 11 Jones. Furthermore, monolithic integration with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) readout integrated circuit enables high-contrast SWIR imaging. This work offers an effective route to simultaneously regulate surface chemistry and junction energetics, providing a practical design strategy for high-performance long-wavelength CQD optoelectronics.

High-performance narrowed-bandgap PbS quantum dot infrared solar cell by advanced bilayer hole transport layer

Aoshen Wei,Sisi Liu,Tianyu Luo,Kangcan Si,He Li,Junlin Wang,Yong Xia,Xiaoyan Wen,Haifei Lu,Ming-Yu Li

A facile and novel bilayer HTL is demonstrated to enhance the performance of PbS QDs photovoltaics. • The advanced bilayer HTL shows “crack-healing” effect while maintains well -matched energy levels with photoactive layer. • The advanced bilayer HTL exhibits remarkably suppressed trap states and high film quality. • As results, high-performance narrowed-bandgap PbS QDs IR cells are achieved with a champion IR PCE of 1.52%. PbS quantum dots (QDs) infrared (IR) solar cells, able to convert low-energy IR photons into electron-hole pairs, are hopeful photovoltaic devices because it broadens the utilization range of the solar spectrum to IR region. Currently, PbS infrared solar cells usually apply small-sized PbS QDs treated with 1,2-ethanedithiol as hole transport layer (HTL) by solid-state ligand exchange (SSLE) method. However, cracks are prone to generate in HTL due to volume shrinkage in SSLE process, resulting in deterioration of devices performance. Here, a facile and novel bilayer PbS QDs HTL is demonstrated by applying QDs synthesized via different methods to form bilayer structures. It is discovered that bilayer structure can “healing” the film cracks and reduce trap states, which is contributed to the carrier separation and extraction in devices. Meanwhile, the advanced bilayer HTL maintains the well-match energy levels with the narrowed-bandgap PbS QDs photoactive layer. As results, superior average AM1.5 PCE of 10.45% (the champion device achieved 12.27%) and average infrared PCE (IR PCE) of 1.24% (the champion device achieved 1.52%) were obtained in devices with the bilayer HTL, demonstrating a facile and reliable approach to enhance the performance of optoelectronic devices. A facile and novel bilayer HTL is demonstrated to improve device performance. Download: Download high-res image (338KB) Download: Download full-size image

Self-Assembly PbS Quantum Dot-Conjugated Polymer Hybrid-Layered Phototransistor Enables SWIR Photodetection with High Detectivity

Zhixiang Jiang,Yuanhong Gao,Wei Hui,Yang Feng,Meili Xu,Jinxiong Li,Feng Jiang,Xiaopeng Zhang,Jianing Wang,Hong Meng,Wei Huang

Lead sulfide colloid quantum dots (PbS QDs) offer great opportunities to revolutionize large-area short-wave infrared (SWIR) detection technologies due to high absorption coefficients and spectral selectivity. However, a critical issue for QDs-based SWIR detectors is high dark current noise due to thermal carriers and the large amounts of surface defect states induced by the ligand exchange process, which hinders the improvement of the room temperature detectivity and linear dynamic range. Herein, it is demonstrated that these dilemmas can be overcome by adopting a novel hybrid-layered phototransistor device architecture composed of a self-assembly high-mobility organic conduction channel and a bulk heterojunction infrared absorber containing PbS QDs as sensitizers. Strong photo absorption in the photoactive layer creates photogenerated charges that are transferred to the conduction channel, where they recirculate many times due to the long trapped-electron lifetime in the photoactive layer and the high carrier mobility of the channel. Therefore, low dark current noise and high photoconductive gain are achieved by both electrical gating and photodoping for carrier-density modulation of phototransistors. Finally, an optimized SWIR phototransistor device with a low room-temperature dark current of 7 pA and a high detectivity of 8 × 10 12 Jones under 1650 nm light illumination is demonstrated.
