Three-in-one effect: Enhancement of processability, anti-aging and mechanical properties of phthalonitrile via modification with novel rare earth coordinated benzimidazole compound

Haizhou Fan,Benhao Xin,Yuechao Zhao,Ying Guo,Kun Zheng,Min Li,Heng Zhou,Tong Zhao

To further improve the comprehensive performance of phthalonitrile (PN), a novel compound SiBPN-Ce was prepared using 2-benzimidazolinone (2-BI), diphenyldichlorosilane (DPDCS), 4-aminophthalonitrile (4-APN), and cerium chloride. The addition of SiBPN-Ce decreased the viscosity of PN exponentially and reduced the peak curing temperature by 29.4 °C. Through copolymerization modification, a highly efficient physical–chemical hybrid reinforcement mechanism was introduced into PN by SiBPN-Ce. The results indicated that SiBPN can effectively increase the temperature of 5 % mass loss (T 5% ) and char yield of PN by 29 °C and 7.2 %, respectively. In the aging test at 350 °C, the formation of a SiO 2 -Ce protective layer derived from SiBPN-Ce delayed the occurrence of microcracks on the PN matrix surface by 60 h. Meanwhile, PN modified with SiBPN-Ce (SiBPN15-Ce) retained most of its surface morphology after aging for 100 h. For the SiBPN-Ce composite, its flexural strength (FS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) increased by 449.1 MPa and 17.2 MPa respectively compared to pure PN composite. Based on all the results, this physical–chemical hybrid reinforcement mechanism in SiBPN15-Ce was carefully analyzed.

Preparation and properties of high-temperature resistant bisphthalonitrile resins containing trifluoromethyl groups reinforced by poly (aryl ether nitrile) capped by phthalonitrile and their composites

Xuhai Xiong,Lei Yao,Rong Ren,Donghui Liu,Na Li

A new series of high-temperature resistant bisphthalonitrile resins containing trifluoromethyl groups were prepared based on 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) bisphthalonitrile (BFPh), which was toughened by hexafluoroisopropylidene-containing poly (aryl ether nitrile) oligomer capped by phthalonitrile (FPEN-Ph) in the different content. In addition, glass fiber reinforced composites were prepared by hot pressing process. The structure of the oligomer was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR. The curing behavior of the blends was studied by DSC. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were also studied. The results showed that the introduction of appropriate content of FPEN-Ph could improve the reactivity of the curing reaction. TGA and DMA results showed that the cured polymers and composites had excellent thermal properties. The residual mass of FPEN-Ph content of 10% at 800°C was 72.4%, and the 5% thermal degradation temperature (T5%) under inert atmosphere was 530°C. The flexural strength of glass fiber reinforced composites was about 592.7 MPa, and the shear strength was about 61.6 MPa, showing excellent mechanical properties. The high-tech thermosetting resin was toughened and enhanced at the same time without reducing heat resistance.

Enhancing the heat resistance, dielectric properties, and flame retardancy of self-curing silicon-based phthalonitrile/quartz composites for a rapid hot-melt prepreg process

Yabin Zhang,Jiaming Wang,Xuedong Wu,Linyan Zhu,Wenguang Zhang,Lishuai Zong,Jinyan Wang,Xigao Jian

The robust operation of electromagnetic waves in communication systems with extreme temperatures relies on high-temperature resistant wave-transparent composites, with organic resin matrix being a pivotal constituent. Enhancing the heat resistance of resins while maintaining excellent processability poses a significant challenge. Herein, a novel “rigid-in-flexible” self-curing silicon-based   silicon-based   phthalonitrile monomer containing phenylacetylene backbone (Si-ALK-PN) was designed. The silazane component disrupts the crystallinity in Si-ALK-PN, resulting in a characteristic of low viscosity (0.3 Pa·s) and extended processing window (>3h). After curing at 450 °C, the resin, namely Si-ALK-PN-450 °C, demonstrated exceptional thermal stability ( T 5%  = 631 °C) and thermo-oxidative stability ( T 5%  = 560 °C). Their quartz fiber-infused composites (Si-ALK-PNs/QF) were manufactured through a straightforward melt processing approach. Upon post-curing at 450 °C, Si-ALK-PN-450 °C/QF exhibited elevated glass transition temperature, flexural strength, and consistent dielectric properties across a wide temperature ranging from 25 °C to 600 °C. Especially, it exhibited excellent flame retardancy as well, stemming from release of eco-friendlyeco-friendly inert gases (NH 3 ) and the high thermal stability of N-enriched all-aromatic PN resin. The design concept of “rigid-in-flexible”, along with the multi-functional group co-curing strategy, offers a promising solution for addressing the trade-off between processing and heat resistance in resins, extending beyond PN resins.

Enhancing interfacial bonding in basalt fiber/phthalonitrile (BF/PN) composite through in-situ iron phthalocyanine growth on BF surface using liquid bio-based PN

Ziyi Zhu,Nan Li,Xulin Yang,Qiancheng Liu,Zhongxiang Bai,Kunyang Fan,Yang Yang,Pan Wang,Kui Li,Fei Zhong,Ying Li,Yingqing Zhan,Wei Feng

The application of basalt fiber-reinforced polymer composite (BFRP) is largely restricted by the poor interfacial interaction between BF and matrix due to the intrinsic incompatibility. Herein, the current study reported the enhancement of interfacial bonding in BF/phthalonitrile (PN) composite through in-situ growth of iron phthalocyanine on BF surface using a liquid bio-based PN monomer (BCPN). BCPN was first synthesized, characterized, and used to initiate the complexation reaction from iron in BF and  CN groups in BCPN, resulting in the increased roughness of BF surface. Consequently, the flexural strength, flexural toughness, tensile strength, tensile toughness, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of BCPN-treated BF/benzoxazine–functional phthalonitrile (BZPN) composites were improved in comparison with those of BF/BZPN composite, with an increment of 36.6%, 72.6%, 36.2%, 96.9%, and 64.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, these BFRPs show high mechanical retention rates after thermal exposure of 300°C/1 h. Due to the compatibility/co-curing between iron phthalocyanine on BF surface and BZPN resin, physical entanglement and chemical anchoring obviously improved the interfacial bonding of BF and BZPN, thereby leading to a higher stress transfer efficiency. This work will enrich the interface construction methods of BFRPs and also provide references for the practical applications of high-performance BF/PN composites. Highlights In-situ reaction of Fe in BF and  CN in PN induced iron phthalocyanine onto BF. Flexural strength, tensile strength, and ILSS of BF/PN composite were improved by 36.6%, 36.2%, and 64.9%, respectively. Interfacial bonding was enhanced via well compatibility/co-curing reactions of BF and PN.

Fabrication Process, Tensile, and Gamma Rays Shielding Properties of Newly Developed Fiber Metal Laminates Based on an Al–Li Alloy and Carbon Fibers-Tungsten Carbide Nanoparticles Reinforced Phthalonitrile Resin Composite

Aboubakr Medjahed,Mehdi Derradji,Abdeldjalil Zegaoui,Ruizhi Wu,Bingcheng Li,Yang Wang,Legan Hou,Jinghuai Zhang,Milin Zhang

In the present study, new fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) are manufactured from the lay-up process of the carbon fibers-tungsten carbide nanoparticles/phthalonitrile (CFs-WC/PN) composite and the Al–Li alloy. The properties of the developed hybrids are analyzed and compared with those of the monolithic alloy. Generally speaking, the results indicate that the amount of the fiber considerably affects the tensile properties. The mechanical properties of the FMLs show enhancements over both the Al–Li alloy and the CFs/PN composite individually. When the number of the composite layers varies from 4 to 12, the ultimate tensile strength of the prepared FMLs increase from 335.3 to 690.5 MPa. The FMLs present a ductile behavior (up to a failure strain of 20%), which can be attributed to the ductile fracture morphology of the Al–Li alloy. These improvements are the result of the synergistic combination of the high strength of composites and the superior ductility of metals. In the meantime, the gamma rays (γ-rays) shielding test reveals that increasing the weight amount of the tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles in the composite noticeably improves the screening ratio, reaching the exceptional value of 46% for the hybrid containing 20 wt% of WC.
