Ultrafine Defective RuO2 Electrocatayst Integrated on Carbon Cloth for Robust Water Oxidation in Acidic Media

Ruixiang Ge,Lei Li,Jianwei Su,Yichao Lin,Ziqi Tian,Liang Chen

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media is attractive but still challenging. In this study, ultrafine defective RuO 2 nanoparticles are successfully prepared on carbon cloth by means of dip-coating, annealing, and acid etching. As a self-supported electrocatalyst, it exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 179 mV in 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 . More importantly, the high activity can be well maintained for 20 h. The density functional calculations revealed that the defect can not only increase the number of active sites but also improve the intrinsic OER activity.

Local charge redistribution-induced OER mechanism switching in RuO2-based catalysts for efficient PEM electrolysis

Xuyan Zhou,Zijie Yang,Yinnan Qian,Zhaoyan Luo,Lei Zhang,Qianling Zhang,Chuanxin He,Zhengtang Luo,Xiangzhong Ren

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is widely recognized as a bottleneck of water electrolysis. To determine the underlying reaction mechanisms, particularly the relative contribution of the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice-oxygen participation mechanism (LOM), we conduct a comprehensive investigation combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental validation. Our theoretical analysis of doped RuO 2 catalysts reveals that heteroatom doping (Ni, Cu, and Zn) induces significant local charge transfer, leading to the increased charge state of Ru and the downshifted d -band center. This, in turn, enables the mechanism switching from the conventional AEM to the more efficient LOM, and finally improves OER activity. We also establish a simple yet powerful descriptor, N e of Ru (representing charge density of Ru sites), which enables accurate prediction of both catalytic activity and stability. Guided by these theoretical predictions, we successfully synthesize a Ni-doped RuO 2 catalyst, which exhibits excellent OER activity and stability in acidic media, achieving an overpotential of just 156 mV and maintaining stability for 4000 h at 10 mA cm −2 , significantly surpassing the performance of the commercial RuO 2 . These findings not only provide fundamental insights into the mechanism-switching behavior in OER catalysis but also offer a practical strategy for designing high-performance, stable electrocatalysts for acidic water electrolysis.

Fluorine-Engineered RuO2 Nanohybrids for Stable Acidic Oxygen Evolution in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Luqi Huang,Mengting Deng,Yayun Zhao,Yinan Zhu,Xiaoyi Hu,Yichao Lin

The instability of ruthenium dioxide (RuO 2 ) poses a significant challenge for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Herein, we present a synergistic strategy combining fluorine engineering with conductivity modulation to significantly enhance both the stability of RuO 2 . RuO 2 nanoparticles (≈3 nm in diameter) were prepared via a sol–gel method and supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form a RuO 2 /CNT composite, which was subsequently fluorinated at 200°C to obtain RuO 2 /CNT-F. Systematic investigations reveal that F incorporation modulates the electronic structure of RuO 2 and mitigates proton accumulation during OER, while the conductive CNT matrix facilitates efficient charge transfer. The optimized RuO 2 /CNT-F catalyst exhibits exceptional acidic OER activity, requiring an overpotential of only 209 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , along with remarkable stability exceeding 300 h in a three-electrode system. Notably, the catalyst also demonstrates outstanding durability in a PEM electrolyzer, maintaining stable operation for over 2000 h at 10 mA cm −2 and sustaining an industrially relevant current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 50 h. This work provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance acidic OER catalysts through synergistic electronic modulation and nanostructure engineering.

Mo-mediated electronic modulation of RuO2 for improved acidic oxygen evolution activity and Ru retention

Yuhan Wang,Yihao Qu,Min Yu,Ji Yang

Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysers require active and stable anodic oxygen evolution catalysts. RuO 2 offers high intrinsic activity but dissolves rapidly in acid. Here, high-valence molybdenum is introduced into rutile RuO 2 to regulate the local Ru-O chemical and electronic environment. The sample labels Mo-x-RuO 2 refer to nominal Mo/(Mo + Ru) precursor ratios. XRD, EDS, XPS and DFT analyses support Mo incorporation within the rutile framework and reveal an altered local Ru/O chemical environment, providing insights into the electronic regulation induced by Mo incorporation. Mo-17-RuO 2 requires 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec −1 . After 75 h of acidic half-cell operation, it shows 6.64% cumulative Ru dissolution based on the nominal initial Ru loading. The commercial RuO 2 reference exhibited 27.95% cumulative Ru dissolution after approximately 17 h of operation. For the selected computational models, the AEM- and LOM-like pathways exhibit comparable thermodynamic limiting steps, with theoretical overpotentials of 275 and 262 mV, respectively, suggesting that Mo incorporation modulates oxygen reaction energetics without exclusively favoring a single pathway. These findings provide insight into composition-dependent Mo engineering for improving the performance and Ru retention of acidic OER catalysts.

Modulating Hydrocarbon Coverage on Mo-Doped RuO2 Anodes Enables Energy-Efficient and Selective Kolbe Electrolysis

Jian Yang,Fan Lin,Shaojie Lei,Zichen Li,Hui Zhang,Zhibao Huo,Dezhang Ren

The development of efficient and low-energy-consumption electrocatalytic decarboxylation (Kolbe electrolysis) is of great significance for the conversion of biomass-derived carboxylic acids into high-grade hydrocarbon fuels. RuO2 is considered a promising anode material. However, its intrinsic high activity towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses challenges in terms of reaction selectivity and high driving potentials in practical applications. This study investigated the modulation of RuO2 electrode performance through the systematic screening of various metal dopants (Mo, Ta, Zr, W, Sn). Results show that while doping generally enhances OER, certain dopants sustain decarboxylation under high potentials by suppressing OER via hydrocarbon product coverage. Among them, the Mo-doped RuO2 coating improved decarboxylation selectivity and Faradaic efficiency to some extent while facilitating product desorption to inhibit interface resistance increase. By further optimizing the doping ratio and calcination temperature, the resulting RuO2-5%Mo anode achieved a remarkable reduction in cell voltage (by approximately 1 V) in the presence of OA during constant-current electrolysis, leading to a ~20% decrease in energy consumption per unit product compared to undoped RuO2, alongside good stability over 10 cycles. This work provides new material design strategies and mechanistic insights for developing Kolbe electrolysis anodes with high selectivity and low energy consumption.

A battery-type cathode with RuO2 modified Ni11(HPO3)8(OH)6 for asymmetric supercapacitors

Kun Zhao,Hongtao Wang,Yanqun Shao,Zhiguang Yang,Zhe Chen,Kongfa Chen,Yunxiang Chen,Deyuan Lin

Phosphates are a kind of promising electrode materials because they can provide numerous cavities and several reaction sites to be favored for storing anions and cations. However, the widespread application of phosphates are limited by their intrinsically low electronic conductivity. RuO 2 /hydrated RuO 2 exhibits high conductivity and excellent electrochemical properties. Reducing its dosage and increasing its specific surface area are the research concerns. Combining less RuO 2 to Nickel phosphate (NiP) is expected to improve the electrochemical performance. RuO 2 -modified NiP (NiP-RuO 2 ) electrode material is synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal reaction and its structural morphology and capacitive properties are investigated. The results indicate that NiP-RuO 2 electrode consists of hydrated RuO 2 and Ni 11 (HPO 3 ) 8 (OH) 6 , and exhibits excellent battery-type electrochemical supercapacitor performance with a specific capacity of 878.06 C/g at 1 A/g. According to density functional theory (DFT) analysis, Ru-doped Ni 11 (HPO 3 ) 8 (OH) 6 has a narrower forbidden band width and higher conductivity than Ni 11 (HPO 3 ) 8 (OH) 6 . Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by NiP-RuO 2 /NF and activated carbon (AC) electrode achieves a high energy density (43.58 Wh/kg) at a power density of 923.47 W/kg. When two ASC devices are connected in series, ten light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be illuminated for ten minutes.

Hydrous RuO2 nanoparticles coated on Co(OH)2 nanoflakes as advanced electrode material of supercapacitors

Xudan Li,Hanwei He

Cobalt hydroxide nanosheets/ruthenium oxide (Co(OH) 2 /RuO 2 ) nanocomposite on nickel foam was successfully synthesized via a simple electrodeposition process as an advanced supercapacitor electrode material. The microscopy studies reveal that RuO 2 nanoparticles are loaded uniformly on interconnected Co(OH) 2 nanosheets forming a three-dimensional (3D) network. The performance optimization of composite is come true through adjusting deposition time of RuO 2 nanoparticles. The electrochemical tests indicate that the optimized Co(OH) 2 /RuO 2 nanocomposite displays excellent super-capacitive properties. The specific capacitance is up to 2168 F g −1 as the current density is 1 A g −1 . Compared with the pure Co(OH) 2 and RuO 2 , the capacitance of the Co(OH) 2 /RuO 2 composite increases by 57% and 80%, respectively. The capacitance maintains at 86.0% after 5000 charging and discharging loops at the constant current density of 5 A g −1 , while the pure Co(OH) 2 only maintains 71.7% of the original capacitance after 5000 loops. The asymmetric capacitor assembled using Co(OH) 2 /RuO 2 nanocomposite as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode exhibits a high energy density of 58.4 W h kg −1 at a power density of 1.2 kW kg −1 . The good pseudocapacitance behavior of the Co(OH) 2 /RuO 2 composite is mainly in virtue of the good synergies between Co(OH) 2 and RuO 2 insuring large surface area, rich electrochemical reactive sites, the short diffusion pathways of ions and good electroconductivity during the charge-discharge process.

Bimetallic Doped RuO2 with Manganese and Iron as Electrocatalysts for Favorable Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance

Yiyi Wu,Muhammad Tariq,Waqas Qamar Zaman,Wei Sun,Zhenhua Zhou,Ji Yang

Synthesizing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with enhanced activity by codoping has been proven to be a feasible approach for the efficient use of noble metals via renewing their basic intrinsic properties. In continuation of the research in codoping, we prepare a ruthenium-based bimetallic doped catalyst MnxFeyRu1–x–yO2 with an outstanding OER activity as compared to pure RuO2, one of the state-of-the-art OER catalysts. The synthesized codoped RuO2 with a Mn/Fe molar ratio of 1 reflected a Tafel slope of only 41 mV dec–1, which is appreciably lower than 64 mV dec–1 for pure RuO2. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) performed reveals that oxygen vacancy and manganese valency are the key factors of the OER activity for codoped catalysts.

Flower-like NiCo2O4 spinel microspheres for efficient chlorine evolution under neutral conditions

Ran Zhang,Jing Cao,Ting Peng,KeXuan Wu,Yinqiang Shu

Dimensional stability anodes (DSA), constructed using noble metal oxides like RuO 2 and IrO 2 , is widely used in industrial chlorine production. The DSA electrode demonstrates exceptional chlorine evolution capabilities in acidic solutions and high-chloride concentrations. However, under neutral conditions, its chlorine evolution efficiency diminishes significantly. In this paper, a low-cost, high-efficiency 3D flower-like NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst was fabricated that exhibits high catalytic activity in neutral sodium chloride solutions. The 3D flower-like NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst exhibits good chlorine evolution efficiency, achieving 90 % at 30 mA/cm 2 in NaCl solutions. Furthermore, it's chlorine evolution efficiency of the electrocatalyst surpasses that of commercial DSA electrode at various current densities, making it a highly promising candidate for electrocatalytic applications.

Interface-Strengthened Ru-Based Electrocatalyst for High-Efficiency Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis at Industrial-Level Current Density

Wenjun Lei,Xinxin Zhao,Chao Liang,Huai Wang,Xuehong Li,Mingkun Jiang,Xiaofeng Li,Fengqin He,Yonghui Sun,Gang Lu,Hairui Cai

Developing an OER electrocatalyst that balances high performance with low cost is crucial for widely adopting PEM water electrolyzers. Ru-based catalysts are gaining attention for their cost-effectiveness and high activity, positioning them as promising alternatives to Ir-based catalysts. However, Ru-based catalysts can be prone to oxidation at high potentials, compromising their durability. In this study, we utilize a simple synthesis method to synthesize a SnO2, Nb2O5, and RuO2composite catalyst (SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2) with multiple interfaces and abundant oxygen vacancies. The large surface area and numerous active sites of the SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2catalyst lead to outstanding acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving current densities of 10, 50, and 200 mA cm−2at ultralow overpotentials of 287, 359, and 534 mV, respectively, significantly surpassing commercial IrO2. Moreover, incorporating Nb2O5into the SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2alters the electronic structure at the interfaces and generates a high density of oxygen vacancies, markedly enhancing durability. Consequently, the membrane electrode composed of SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2and commercial Pt/C demonstrated stable operation in the PEM cell for 25 days at an industrial current density of 1 A cm−2. This research presents a convenient approach for developing a highly efficient and durable Ru-based electrocatalyst, underscoring its potential for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis.

Tailoring the Orbital Overlap of RuO2 via Inductive Effect for Durable Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Li Gao,Xing Cheng,Haikui Yong,Yutong Zhang,Jindian Yu,Yueshuai Wang,Tianjiao Lou,Jinxu Song,Lirong Zheng,Hongyi Li

RuO 2 is a promising anode catalyst for PEMWE but suffers rapid degradation at ampere-level current densities. Previous studies have linked the instability of ruthenium-based catalysts to excessive Ru─O covalency, yet the mechanism governing this covalency remains unclear. Here, we introduce isovalent metals (M: Ti 4+ /Hf 4+ ) to modulate the Ru─O bond strength. Density functional theory calculations show that the strong inductive effect of Hf─O enables Hf 4+ to optimize the Ru(4d)–O(2p) orbital overlap, which in turn weakens the Ru─O covalency, thereby suppressing lattice oxygen activity. Experimental results demonstrate that Hf 4+ , which possesses stronger oxophilicity, exhibits superior performance in enhancing both the catalytic activity and durability of Ru 0.7 M 0.3 O 2 (M = Ti or Hf) for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction. In a practical PEMWE device, Ru 0.7 Hf 0.3 O 2 achieves 3 A cm −2 at 1.71 V, corresponding to a specific energy consumption of 44.58 kWh kg −1 H 2 , meeting the U.S. DOE 2026 target (specific energy consumption of 48 kWh kg −1 H 2 ). Moreover, the catalyst operates stably for over 250 h at 1 A cm −2 with a degradation rate more than 48 times lower than that of commercial RuO 2 . This work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts through the inductive effect.

Redox-Programmable Construction of RuO2/Ru Interfacial Nanostructures for Enhanced Hydrogen Generation via Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Haoyue Shi,Chenchen Niu,Wenfeng Song,Helong Zhang,Hao Zhang,Chuxiong Qiu,Kai Xu,Yi Xie

Metal/oxide interfaces often exhibit superior catalytic properties, yet their controllable construction remains challenging. Here, we report a redox-programmable ethanol-mediated solvothermal strategy that enables stepwise transformation of RuO2 and a RuO2/PdO mixture into RuO2/Ru and RuO2/Ru/Pd interfacial nanostructures, and ultimately metallic Ru and Ru/Pd nanoparticles, respectively, under mild conditions. Temperature- and time-dependent studies combined with microscopic analysis reveal a surface-initiated reduction mechanism and a three-stage evolution pathway (RuO2 → RuO2/Ru → Ru0). The interfacial mixed-phase catalyst delivers superior hydrogen generation performance in ammonia borane hydrolysis compared with both pure RuO2 and fully metallic nanoparticles, demonstrating a nonmonotonic phase–activity relationship. The enhanced activity originates from synergistic bifunctional catalysis at the metal/oxide boundary, where metallic Ru promotes hydride activation and oxide domains facilitate water dissociation. These findings highlight the critical role of controllable redox evolution in tailoring interfacial structures. This work establishes a comprehensive structure–evolution–function framework for the rational design of high-performance metal/oxide catalysts via low-temperature redox control.
