Due to high absorbance of UV light and low solid loading, the stereolithography-based additive manufacturing of gray-colored and dense Si 3 N 4 ceramic is of significant difficulty and challenge. The effects of geometric properties of ceramic powders on the curing performance were investigated by studying the absorption difference of the Si 3 N 4 ceramic particles with different colors and particle sizes and ultraviolet light. The results show that the transmission of ultraviolet light and curing performance of the darker Si 3 N 4 ceramic slurry are much poor. Under the same particle size, the Si 3 N 4 ceramic slurry using lighter particles presents the smaller scattering coefficient. The scattering coefficient (∼202) of the gray powder with ∼0.8 μm average particle size is the smallest. Under the same color, the larger the particle size, the smaller the scattering coefficient. The smallest scattering coefficient of the white powder with ∼2.0 μm average particle size is ∼110.

Si 3 N 4 cellular ceramics with large thickness/length ratio (up to ∼12.0) have been successfully prepared by stereolithography 3D printing with highly viscous (viscosity >10.0 Pa‧s at 30 s −1 shear rate), self-holding pastes. Due to the high viscosity and low curing depth of the paste, structural defects are commonly found in the printed honeycombs or lattices and anisotropic surface roughness is present. The structural defects can be reduced by aligning the lattice orientation at 45° relative to the paste recoating direction to reduce shear stress concentration at the cured part beneath. The resultant honeycombs and simple cubic lattices with density of ∼1.5–1.6 g/cm 3 exhibit compressive strength as high as 1.1 GPa and 290.7 MPa, respectively. The specific compressive strength of honeycombs increases from 298.6 to 681.7 MPa‧cm 3 /g with the ceramic volume fractions increase from 0.19 to 0.52, surpassing that of many other ceramic honeycombs and lattices with similar density reported so far. The controlling factors governing the defect formation, surface finish and mechanical properties of the printed cellular ceramics are discussed thoroughly.

To reduce the lattice oxygen content of Si 3 N 4 green bodies, samples were prepared using an N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) system. The endothermic and exothermic peaks are related to the decomposition of organic matter and the reaction between pyrolytic carbon and impurity oxides in the sintering process. Multi-step heat preservation during the thermal degreasing process reduced the carbon content and defects. The α→β phase transformation and aspect ratio of grains changed from 89.2% to 4.84:1 at 1640 °C to 96.3% and 7.80:1 at 1700 °C, respectively. The relative density, hardness, fracture toughness, and thermal conductivity of the Si 3 N 4 samples reached 98.5%, 1353 HV, 8.51 MPa·m 1/2 , and 97.1 W·m −1 ·K −1 , respectively. Pyrolytic carbon can react with SiO 2 , which reduces the content of the glass phase in the green body and affects the dissolution and precipitation process and lattice oxygen content. In the structure of the Si 3 N 4 sample, carbon particles with sizes of 100–500 nm and near-spherical shapes were observed. Intergranular-phase YMgSi 2 O 5 N was formed during the sintering process, which was conducive to improving the thermal conductivity. This article uses lower temperature and no pressure conditions to prepare Si 3 N 4 ceramics, which can provide reference for batch and low-cost production.

Additive manufacturing of ceramic materials has gained the significant attention due to its ability to flexibly fabricate customizable ceramics with complex structures. However, large-size advanced ceramics are still difficult to be fabricated by additive manufacturing, especially for the thin-wall structures. Here, a strategy for fabricating large-size Si 3 N 4 ceramic via the materials extrusion process using the long-term stable hydrogel-based suspensions is reported. We establish a mechanism to analyze the rheology relation between the ceramic suspensions and the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels. The deformation of filaments under gravity is simulated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, further the effects of the shear-thinning behavior close to the filament surface and the evaporation rate for suspensions with different solid content on the final shape of the filaments are investigated. We finally printed a single-wall cone component with a height of 180 mm, a diameter of 90 mm, and a wall thickness of 1.8 mm by the suspension containing a pseudoplastic CMC hydrogel.

Textured Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics are prepared via combination of PHIP sintering and gas pressure sintering. The mechanical properties of composite ceramics gradually decrease with the increase of BN content. However, the bimodal texture of Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics exhibits a synergistic effect on the anisotropy of thermal and mechanical properties. When the BN content is 20 vol%, The anisotropy of fracture toughness along different testing direction reaches 51.0 %. By the proper regulation of the bimodal texture, Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics could simply realize a high thermal conductivity (99.2 W m −1 k −1 ) and thermal anisotropy (2.1) at low sintering temperature (1800 °C) for short preparation period (4 h). This bimodal texture breaks through the inhibition of the high thermal conductivity of Si 3 N 4 -based ceramics by the amorphous phase of low thermal conductivities. Thus, this new material designs have great advantages in large-scale preparation and directional heat dissipation in the next-generation electric devices.

The high-temperature corrosion behavior of a Si 3 N 4 /W composite under the molten MgCl 2 -NaCl-KCl salts has been investigated. It is suggested that the molten salts diffuse along the physical surface defects and enter the interior of adjacent Si 3 N 4 /W grains, leading to the 9.1% bending strength loss after 400 hours for corrosion. In air atmosphere, oxidation products WO 2 , WO 3 , and corrosion product MgWO 4 caused a 34.3% bending strength decrease after 400 hours for corrosion. This study elucidates the high-temperature molten chloride salt corrosion mechanisms of the Si 3 N 4 /W composite material under two different atmospheres. The composite demonstrates relatively excellent corrosion resistance in service environments.

Novel Si 3 N 4 /PAN/SiZrOCN ceramic aerogel composites, which have excellent wave transmission functions, were prepared through electrospinning, freeze-drying, and high-temperature pyrolysis. Polyvinyl alcohol was used as the aerogel carbon skeleton, polystyrene served as the pore-forming substance, Si 3 N 4 /PAN fiber was used as the reinforcement material. The pore size distribution and dielectric properties of the composites were systematically studied at different pyrolysis temperatures. An increase in pyrolysis temperatures led to a decrease in the specific surface area and dielectric constant. Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were employed to investigate the polymerization mechanism and ceramic process of the precursor. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller test revealed that the maximum specific surface area of Si 3 N 4 /PAN/SiZrOCN ceramic aerogel composites was 109.261 m 2 /g, and the average pore size was 4.56 nm when sintered at 600 °C. The dielectric properties test results showed a dielectric constant ranging between 3.1 and 3.7 and a dielectric loss tangent value between 2.6 × 10 –3 and 1.6 × 10 –2 for the sample. Si 3 N 4 /PAN/SiZrOCN ceramic aerogel composites exhibited excellent dielectric properties at room temperature and demonstrated exceptional dielectric stability across different frequency bands (1.8–18.0 GHz), making them a potential high-temperature wave-transmittance material.

Si3N4 ceramics with improved thermal conductivity and mechanical properties were prepared by carbothermal reduction and two-step sintering. The addition of 2 wt% C led to the development of an intergranular phase YNSiO2 with reduced oxygen content. Notably, setting the pre-sintering temperature at 1450°C promoted the formation of a rough bimodal morphology within the Si3N4 ceramics. Furthermore, an extended holding period at 1850°C resulted in additional grain growth and the elimination of intergranular phases. The Si3N4 specimens produced at 1450°C for 3 h followed by 1850°C for 8 h, incorporating 2 wt% C, exhibited a notable continuity between Si3N4 grains. The thickness of the grain boundary layer was only about 1 nm, and the N/O atomic ratio of the intergranular phase was measured to be 0.42. Consequently, the resulting thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of Si3N4 specimens were found to be 101 W·m −1 ·K −1 , 712 ± 29 MPa, and 7.7 ± 0.2 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. Compared with samples without C additive and directly sintered at 1850°C for 8 h, the Si3N4 specimens produced in this work showed a significant increase of more than 50% in thermal conductivity and about 17% in fracture toughness.

Effective thermal management materials are crucial for modern electronics, aerospace, and energy applications. This study investigates a novel approach by constructing a Si₃N₄ skeleton with a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure and reinforcing phase change materials (PCM) with boron nitride (BN) to develop Si₃N₄@BN/PCM composites that exhibit enhanced thermal conductivity, thermal stability and electrical insulation. Utilizing digital light processing 3D printing, a Si₃N₄ TPMS structure was prepared and subsequently reinforced with BN via vacuum-assisted infiltration into PCM. The incorporation of 3D Si₃N₄ skeleton and 2D BN flakes created a dual-scale network within the PCM, significantly increasing thermal conductivity from 0.24 W/m·K to 2.04 W/m·K. The presence of Si₃N₄ and BN notably improved thermal stability and reduced the coefficient of thermal expansion. Additionally, electrical insulation properties improved with an increase in volume resistivity and breakdown strength to 5.1 × 10 1 ⁴ Ω·cm and 62.4 kV/mm, respectively. This work demonstrates that Si₃N₄@BN/PCM composites effectively integrate high thermal conductivity, stability, and electrical insulation, thereby meeting the stringent demands of thermal management applications.

The advancement of high-density integration and packaging technologies necessitates the development of packaging materials that possess enhanced thermal conductivity and substantial mechanical strength. In this paper, we present a novel type of CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 /β-Si 3 N 4 composites synthesized through the solid-state reaction. The effects of β-Si 3 N 4 ceramic content on the sinterability, phase structure, microstructure, and properties of the composites were studied. As an excellent structural and functional material, the rod-like β-Si 3 N 4 ceramic not only enhanced the thermal conductivity (λ) and flexural strength of composite materials but also effectively reduced the thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of the composite and maintained good high-frequency dielectric properties. The composite sample containing 15wt.% β-Si 3 N 4 demonstrated exceptional performance after sintering at 850 ℃ for 30 min, achieving a bulk density of 2.80 g/cm 3 , a relative permittivity of 6.52 with a dielectric loss of 1.94 × 10 –3 (15 GHz), a λ of 3.5 W/(m·K), a CTE value of 6.40 ppm/ ℃, and a flexural strength of 180.1 MPa. Additionally, the EDS line mapping indicates that there was no diffusion of silver at the interface, thereby affirming the favorable compatibility between the composite and the silver electrode. This characteristic positions the CBS/β-Si 3 N 4 composite as a potentially promising candidate for applications in electronic packaging.

Porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics were prepared using the low-toxicity monomer HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) via a modified gel casting method. The rheological properties of Si 3 N 4 slurries were investigated. Triethanolamine with high activity was used as a catalyst and modifier for gelation reactions, effectively improving the curing rate and suppressing the inherent surface oxygen inhibition in such process systems. With an increase in solid loading of the slurry, the drying shrinkage (12.3% to 5.4%) significantly decreased, while the green body density (44.0%–49.0%) and flexural strength (9.65–16.46 MPa) increased, demonstrating an excellent mechanical strength. After sintering at 1700°C, the porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics prepared with 24–36 vol% solid loading slurry exhibited a flexural strength of 144.39–193.66 MPa and a porosity of 55.8% to 49.0%. The dielectric constant and loss tangent at 30 GHz ranged from 2.88 to 3.38 and 1.17–1.56 × 10 −3 , respectively. These ceramics show promising potential applications in high-performance structural ceramics and high-temperature wave-transparent materials.

The aim of achieving integration of lightweight, high strength, high-temperature resistant, and satisfactory electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption was successfully accomplished in the present study by synthesizing TiC–TiB 2 fibers reinforced Si 3 N 4 composites, which were pressureless sintered at 1650°C for 2 h. The preparation of TiC–TiB 2 fibers was conducted through a chloride-assisted carbothermic method. This work focused on investigating the effects of incorporating TiC–TiB 2 fibers on the mechanical properties and EM wave absorption characteristics of the composites. The 30 wt% TiC–TiB 2 /Si 3 N 4 composite displayed the bulk density of 1.89 g/cm 3 , bending strength of 93.11 ± 3.91 MPa, fracture toughness of 1.81 ± 0.10 MPa m 1/2 , minimum reflection loss of −38.87 dB, and effective absorption bandwidth of 1.43 GHz in the K u -band, respectively. The as-synthesized TiC–TiB 2 /Si 3 N 4 composites are promising candidates for EM wave absorbing load-bearing materials due to their outstanding mechanical properties and microwave absorption properties.
