A unique core–shell structured pitch-pyrolyzed carbon-coated porous Si/SiO x /needle coke (Si/SiO x / NC@C) nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via a low-temperature aluminothermic reduction combined with a scalable spray-drying and following carbonization processes. The fabrication of silicon-based materials in Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites derived from high silica-containing silica fume powders enables effective utilization of industrial solid waste. The Si/SiO x nanoparticles in Si/SiO x /NC@C with abundant internal nanovoids are anchored on the surface of needle coke matrices, forming Si/SiO x -needle coke dual-phase cores, which are wrapped by a thin pitch-pyrolyzed amorphous carbon layer. The synergetic combination of these inherent advantages, such as high electroconductivity, porosity, amorphous/crystalline mixture structure, and high-valence SiO x residues, remarkably enhances the composite’s structural stability and buffers internal structure stress induced by alloying/dealloying of Si. The Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites demonstrate exceptional electrochemical stability, exhibiting a specific reversible capacity of 771.5 mAh g⁻ 1 with minimal capacity decay (~ 0.06% per cycle) over 500 cyclic repetitions at an elevated current density of 200 mA g⁻ 1 . Rate capability tests show that the Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites achieve a high capacity of 660.25 mAh g −1 even when subjected to the highest current of 3200 mA g −1 . More notably, this work provides a facile and promising economical route for the scalable industrial production of high-performance Si-needle coke anode materials for future LIBs from industrial solid waste.

To achieve superior lithium storage performance, SiOx is usually designed into nanostructured SiOx/C composites by complex or expensive methods. Here, micron-sized interconnected SiOx/N-doped carbon (NC) microspheres composed of evenly dispersed SiOx nano-domains and NC have been fabricated by a scalable microemulsion method and following pyrolysis, using vinyltriethoxysilane and chitosan as precursors. The unique structure of the micron-sized SiOx/NC spheres leads to enhanced structural integrity and enables stable long-term cycling (800 cycles at 2 A g−1). Benefiting from the enhanced electron/Li+ diffusion kinetics originated from the unique structure and N-doping, SiOx/NC-2 presents considerable capacitive-controlled Li storage capacity, which leads to outstanding rate capability. Consequently, the assembled SiOx/NC-2//LiFePO4 full cell exhibits superior rate capability (106 mA h g−1 at 4C) and stable long-term cycling at 2C (102 mA h g−1 after 350 cycles). This work opens a new door for the application of chitosan in building micron-sized high-performance SiOx/C anode materials, and to some extent facilitates the recycling of waste seafood shells.

Low silicon oxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for lithium and potassium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity (~2400 mAh g −1 ) and good cycle performance. However, volume effects and poor intrinsic electronic conductivity during cycling limit its practical application. To meet this challenge, we synthesized SiO x @C (SC) anodes with various carbon contents by ball milling and high-temperature carbonization. The graphite/asphalt coating reduces the volume expansion of SiO and reduces the mechanical stress. When used as a lithium ion battery (LIB) electrode, the SC-2 material retained a lithium storage capacity of 729.5 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . In addition, when used as a potassium ion battery (KIB) electrode, the SC-2 material provides a high capacity with a discharge capacity of 107.0 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 200 mAh g −1 and excellent cycle life (after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g −1 , the capacity 80.8 mAh g −1 was retained). The potassium storage mechanism of the SC electrode was analyzed by the simple ex-situ XRD technique. These results show that SC anodes are promising for application as anode materials for LIBs and KIBs.

SiOxanodes are highly promising for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to their superior theoretical capacity. However, issues such as drastic volume expansion and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) impede their practical use. While macroporous architectures can mitigate these challenges, traditional fabrication often depends on tedious hard templating methods and significant organic solvent consumption. In this work, we report a sustainable, emulsion-self-templated and organic solvent-free strategy to synthesize a carbon-coated 3D macroporous SiOx/C composite (3DM-SiOx/C@C). Our approach uniquely integrates radical polymerization with a water-in-oil emulsion and sol–gel process, followed by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The 3D macroporous framework is generated via in-situ emulsion droplets acting as self-templates, effectively eliminating the need for external sacrificial templates and toxic etchants. Notably, this organic solvent-free process achieves an exceptional precursor to (precursor + organic solvent) mass ratio of 1.0, contrasting sharply with conventional methods (0.0044–0.17). The resulting hierarchical structure, characterized by interconnected macropores and a uniform carbon coating, significantly enhances structural integrity and electronic conductivity. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that 3DM-SiOx/C@C exhibits an improved ICE of 74.32% and long-term cycling stability even at a high current density of 1.0 A g−1compared to non-porous and uncoated counterparts. This integrated synthesis offers a green and scalable pathway for developing high-performance silicon-based anodes for large-scale energy storage.

Silicon-based anodes are limited by severe volume fluctuations and sluggish charge-transfer kinetics. Although metallic coatings can improve electronic conductivity, continuous dense coatings may impede electrolyte access, and lithium-ion transport. Herein, a soft-hard synergistic bicontinuous conductive network strategy is proposed to fabricate a SiO x /nitrogen-doped laser-induced graphene/Cu (SiO x /NLIG/Cu) composite. Deep eutectic solvent (DES)-derived nitrogen-doped active sites combine with super-lyophilic NLIG matrix to spatially guide the electrodeposition of an interconnected percolation network, rather than an ionic blocking layer. This bicontinuous configuration decouples electronic and ionic transport. The porous NLIG framework serves as a strain buffer and a low-tortuosity ion conduit, while the interpenetrating Cu network maintains electrical continuity and structural integrity. This conductive framework is associated with the formation of a stable, LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase, enhancing the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient by one order of magnitude. The binder-free anode delivers an initial lithiation capacity of 1820.6 mAh g −1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 86.3% at 0.1 A g −1 . It also exhibits enhanced durability, achieving 86.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Full cells assembled with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathodes achieve an active-material-level gravimetric energy density of 614.7 Wh kg −1 . This soft-hard synergy strategy provides a versatile solution to high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

In the past few years, silane coupling agents are often used to modify the surface of silicon materials; however, researches in preparation of SiO X -based materials pyrolyzed from silane coupling agents are seldom reported. Hence, in order to prepare amorphous SiO X @C anodes for Li-ion storage, we adopted three kinds of silane coupling agents as organic silicon sources. The results show that silane coupling agents with vinyl group is the optimum organic silicon source. Owing to the strong chemical bonds of Si–O–C, amorphous SiO X particles are uniformly embedded in carbon matrix, forming monodisperse microbeads architecture with good buffer abilities. Therefore, the V-SiO X @C anodes derived from silane coupling agents with vinyl groups show good electrochemical performance, retaining a reversible discharge capacity of 940 mAh g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles, and it still depicts a good long-term cycling durability, maintaining 739 mAh g −1 at a current density of 400 mA g −1 after 400 cycles.

High-capacity SiO x anodes are fatally limited by poor electrical conductivity and huge volume fluctuations. Nano-engineering can effectively extend battery life, but achieving the transformation of nanostructures from laboratory synthesis to industrial mass production still remains a great challenge. Conventional synthetic routes are plagued by harsh conditions, complex processes, and especially low yields; even if they are adopted by industrial production, the large amounts of solvents in traditional wet chemical methods will pose a potential risk of pollution and energy waste. Herein, a solvent-free and mass-producible strategy is presented to prepare SiO x /C@C nanocomposite via solvent-free sol-gel, ball milling , and carbon coating process . The production exhibits favorable powder properties for conventional LIB fabrication technology, such as narrow particle size distribution , suitable specific surface area, as well as a high yield (40.5%). The prepared SiO x /C@C anode displays a high initial coulombic efficiency (71.4%) and reversible capacity (1279 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), and a great durability (80.08% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 ). Furthermore, the superior matching performance of SiO x /C@C//LiCoO 2 full-cell is also clearly demonstrated, especially the high energy density (347 Wh kg −1 ). This ingenious and scalable strategy will remarkably promote the commercialization of nanostructures.

SiO x has high specific capacity for lithium-ion batteries, but the rate and the cycling performances need to be further improved to satisfy the needs of the future. In this study, the C, N, P doping SiO x /G@CNP anodes are prepared by a facile ball milling and heat treatment process . The electrochemical performances of SiO x are improved by the synergistic effect of C, N, P doping. The SiO x /G@CNP-2 anode with the addition of 20 wt% phytate shows the best electrochemical performances and maintains a specific capacity of 77.45% after 150 cycles at 0.2 A·g −1 . Importantly, it exhibits a remarkable rate performance with specific capacities of 528.2 mAh·g −1 and 370.0 mAh·g −1 even at 3.0 and 5.0 A·g −1 , respectively. Artificial graphite and the carbon shell formed by the thermal decomposition of citric acid contribute to the structural stability of SiO x and improve the cycling performance of the material. Moreover, the addition of P element and high content of pyridine N accelerates the rate of Li + deintercalation, and the conductivity and ion diffusion coefficient of the material are effectively promoted, thus greatly improving the rate performance of the material. This work presented herein provides a simple and feasible method for the preparation of high-performance anode materials.

Silicon monoxide, a promising silicon-based anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries, has recently attracted much attention for its high theoretical capacity, good cycle stability, low cost, and environmental benignity. Currently, the most critical challenge is to improve its low initial coulombic efficiency and significant volume changes during the charge–discharge processes. Herein, we report a binder-free monolithic electrode structure based on directly encapsulating micro-nano Si/SiOx particles into conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks to form monolithic, multi-core, cross-linking composite matrices. We utilize micro-nano Si/SiOx reduced by high-energy ball-milling SiO as active materials, and conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon formed by the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile both as binders and conductive agents. Owing to the high electrochemical activity of Si/SiOx and the good mechanical resiliency of conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon backbones, this specific composite structure enhances the utilization efficiency of SiO and accommodates its large volume expansion, as well as its good ionic and electronic conductivity. The annealed Si/SiOx/polyacrylonitrile composite electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, including a high initial reversible capacity (2734 mA h g−1 with 75% coulombic efficiency), stable cycle performance (988 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles), and good rate capability (800 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 rate). Because the composite is naturally abundant and shows such excellent electrochemical performance, it is a promising anode candidate material for lithium-ion batteries. The binder-free monolithic architectural design also provides an effective way to prepare other monolithic electrode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

The charge/ion transfer and structural stability of silicon suboxide (SiO X ) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are plaguing. Titanate oxide (TiO 2 ) shows zero strain and high ion diffusion for lithiation , promising for improving its electrochemical properties . Herein, hybrid TiO X /SiO X @C (local reduction of TiO 2 for TiO X ) was prepared via magnesiothermic reaction and self-assembled as hierarchical microspheres . The embedded TiO X and hierarchical structures buffer the volume-expansion-induced strain of TiO X /SiO X @C for high structural integrity. Oxygen-vacancy sites around Ti and Si atoms for charge transfer tunnel and the heterostructure for fast interfacial charge response improve its electronic conductivity . The introduction of locally reduced Ti atoms alters oxygen structural dispersion, further reducing Li diffusion barriers . Even, the inevitable crack of TiO X /SiO X induces its exposure to the electrolyte, facilitating a compact solid electrolyte interphase layer for stable electrochemical performance. Thus, its open-circuit voltage curve displays a low lithiation platform due to its low polarization for Si-based anodes. These synergetic findings deliver the optimal TiO X /SiO X @C with high cycling stability (951.6 mAh g −1 at 1A g −1 after 1000 cycles with a capacity retention of ∼87.7%) and superb rate capability (516.5 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 ). This work provides a deep understanding of charge/ion kinetics for SiO X -based anodes of LIBs.

Silicon suboxide (SiOx, 0 < x < 2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, yet the application of SiOx anodes is limited by their low electrical conductivity and drastic volume expansion. Although integrating SiOx nanoparticles with carbon materials can mitigate these issues, achieving both uniform dispersion of SiOx nanoparticles within the carbon matrix and structural stability remains a significant challenge when using only conventional mechanical mixing, surface coating, and sol–gel methods. Herein, a combined sol–gel and soft-templating method is employed to encapsulate mesoporous SiOx@carbon (SiOx@C) spheres (m-SiOx@CS) within a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous carbon (3DOMC) framework, yielding a nanocomposite (3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS). In m-SiOx@CS, the uniformly dispersed SiOx nanoparticles and carbon provide abundant conductive interfaces to enhance reaction kinetics, and the mesoporous structure enables rapid mass transfer. Meanwhile, 3DOMC provides a stable skeleton to ensure the structural stability of the electrode during cycling. As a result, the 3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability, maintaining a high reversible capacity of 488.1 mAh g–1 after 2000 cycles at 1 A g–1. Furthermore, the assembled 3DOMC/m-SiOx@CS||LiFePO4 Li-ion full batteries can maintain a high capacity of 82.5 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C. This study offers a broadly applicable structural design strategy for high-performance SiOx-based anodes.

High-capacity SiO x anode materials are difficult to commercialize due to poor conductivity and large volume fluctuations. Constructing nanostructured SiO x /C composites has been proven as one of the effective approaches. However, the structural design of a SiO x /C composite usually involves the use of templates and relies on chemical etching and organic solvents to remove the template, which causes environmental pollution and hinders the reuse of templates. This study proposes a green template strategy. By exploiting its phase transition of poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at specific temperatures, a nanoscale template is provided for the hydrolysis and deposition process of silicon source and solves the problem when removing template. The prepared SiO x @NC is features a gradient distribution of silicon valence states, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling. N-doped carbon coating constructs a stable interfacial framework that facilitates electron transport and lithium-ion diffusion. The discharge capacity of SiO x @NC was maintained at 612.2 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The material in the Li-ion full cell delivers a reversible capacity of 117.57 mAh g −1 , demonstrating its promising practical applications in LIBs. Our work will open up a feasible and eco-friendly preparation path for silicon-based anode materials in high-energy-density and long-life LIBs.
