Due to the efficiency of ion movement is greatly affected by moisture environment, this article explores the effects of the changing the moisture content of the self-degraded ionic hydrogel-based electrolyte layer made of sodium alginate and chitosan on the improvement of the electromechanical properties of the soft ionic actuator. Specifically, sodium alginate-chitosan ionic hydrogel-based soft ionic actuator is fabricated and analyzed by voltammetry analysis, AC impedance, charge and discharge, electrical conductivity, displacement, and output force. Furthermore, the further application of this soft ionic actuator on bionic flytrap is developed and discussed. The results show that soft ionic actuator with the moisture content of 78.64% has the best electromechanical properties. Furthermore, soft ionic actuators with different moisture contents show different degrees of deflection due to the shift of the anions to the cathode under charged conditions. Therefore, it can be found that moisture content is beneficial to improve the electromechanical properties of ionic hydrogel-based soft artificial muscle.

In this study, sodium alginate (SA) nanofibres were obtained by electrospinning via the assistance of traditional poly(ethyl oxide) (PEO) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with a high SA/PEO ratio of up to 94:6. However, surfactants with more or less toxicities were replaced by nontoxic and fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) to improve spinnability. Experimental details were conducted by fixing the ratio of SA/PEO to 90:10. Then, the electrospinning products of solutions with different compositions were observed with scanning electron microscopy. Properties such as conductivity, surface tension and rheology of the solutions were investigated to determine the key influencing factors. Moreover, since CDs have excellent fluorescence properties, the fluorescent properties of the nanofibre membrane that was blended with CDs were then collected. In addition, in vitro cytotoxicity assessment of the nanofibres were conducted to evaluate the toxicities and biocompatibility. Keywords:sodium alginate;electrospinning;nanofibres

A versatile ionic crosslink lithography (ICL) approach is reported to achieve geometry transitions of strong polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogels in a controllable and programmable manner. Specifically, localized PVA/SA and PVA/SA/Fe 3+ hydrogel domains of significantly different swellabilities (i.e., in-plane gradient) are created by patterning and selective ionic crosslinking of one single type of PVA/SA hydrogel. A simple two-step sequential pre- and free-swelling, or each alone, directs the patterned, inhomogeneous hydrogel to transform in various programmable and quasi-quantitative ways through local bulging and/or global buckling. All types of shape changing are reversible and repeatable due to the reversible nature of ionic coordination in the hydrogel networks. The flexibility and versatility of 3D printing is also demonstrated in creating through-thickness gradient in PVA and PVA/SA hydrogel assemblies with similar morphing capability. The ICL approach developed in this work may help shed some light on developing strong and shape morphing hydrogels as soft sensors and actuators and for potentially biomimetic transformations. The ICL approach may also be transferable to fabrication of many other types of hydrogel materials for similar applications.

In order to solve the pollution faced by traditional evaporators, an interface evaporator containing a floating unit and a bismuth oxychloride composite hydrogel unit was constructed. The innovation lies in: 1. The infiltrating behavior of the floating unit is non-wetting; 2. The water contact angle of the floating layer is 160° and the construction strategy can be extended to sponges, fabrics and felts. The obtained bismuth oxychloride composite hydrogel retained an excellent water supply and salt suppression capacity, with the water droplets expanding within 120 ms and reaching a steam production rate of 1.82 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . From band structure calculation, the conduction and valence band are −0.928 eV and 1.502 eV, respectively. Comparative experiments and ESR analyses demonstrated the h + degraded species. It is hoped that the construction of the above interface evaporator could bring a new solution for environmental restoration.

Developing safe and effective novel wound dressings to enhance full-thickness skin wound regeneration is highly desirable. In this study, we firstly incorporated chlorogenic acid (CA) into dopamine (DA) functionalized alginate (Alg-DA) conjugates and utilized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the carrier polymer to fabricate a series of novel multifunctional composite nanofiber membranes (PVA/Alg-DA/CA) for promoting wound healing. These nanofiber membranes exhibited high water absorption, water vapor transmission rate, porosity, and hydrophilicity properties. The CA endowed the PVA/Alg-DA/CA membranes with excellent antibacterial properties, and the superior antioxidant activity to effectively protect cells from oxidative damage. Meanwhile, capitalizing on the unique nanofiber architecture, as well as the inherent biofunctional activities of CA and Alg-DA, these membranes exhibited remarkable biocompatibility, fostering a conducive environment for fibroblast adhesion and proliferation. Moreover, wound healing assessments and histopathological analyses revealed that composite membranes could promote neovascularization and tissue remodeling, and thus accelerating wound closure in the mouse full-thickness wound defect model. Additionally, the upregulation of key healing markers including CD31 and TGF-β1 protein expressions, further corroborated the ability of multifunctional membrane to stimulate the wound healing cascade. This multifunctional membranes with biosafety and therapeutic outcomes are a promising candidate for wound dressing to promote skin repair.

For the selective water-permeation across dense membrane, constructing continuous pathways with high-density ionic groups are of critical significance for the preferential sorption and diffusion of water molecules. In this study, zwitterionic graphene oxides (PSBMA@GO) nanosheets were prepared and incorporated into sodium alginate (SA) membrane for efficient water permeation and water/alcohol separation. The two-dimensional GO provides continuous pathway, while the high-density zwitterionic groups on GO confer electrostatic interaction sites with water molecules, leading to high water affinity and ethanol repellency. The simultaneous optimization of the physical and chemical structures of water transport pathway on zwitterionic GO surface endows the membrane with high-efficiency water permeation. Using dehydration of water/alcohol mixture as the model system, the nanohybrid membranes incorporating PSBMA@GO exhibit much higher separation performance than the SA membrane and the nanohybrid membrane utilizing unmodified GO as filler (with the optimal permeation flux of 2140 g m–2 h–1, and separation factor of 1370). The study indicates the great application potential of zwitterionic graphene materials in dense water-permeation membranes and provides a facile approach to constructing efficient water transport pathway in membrane.

The biomedical applications of graphene-based materials, including drug delivery, have grown rapidly in the past few years. The aim of this present study is to enhance the efficiency and specificity of anticancer drug delivery and realize intelligently controlled release and targeted delivery. Graphene oxide (GO) was first prepared from purified natural graphite according to a modified Hummers’ method. Then GO was functionalized with adipic acid dihydrazide to introduce amine groups, and sodium alginate (SA) was covalently conjugated to GO by the formation of amide bonds. The resulting GO–SA conjugate was characterized and used as a carrier to encapsulate the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) to study in vitro release behavior. The maximum loading capacity of DOX on GO–SA was 1.843 mg/mg and the drug release rate under tumor cell microenvironment of pH 5.0 was significantly higher than that under physiological conditions of pH 6.5 and 7.4. Methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay was applied to evaluate the Hela cells and NIH-3T3 cells cytotoxicity of GO–SA. Results showed that GO–SA had no obvious toxicity and GO–SA/DOX exhibits notable cytotoxicity to Hela cells. Cell uptake studies indicated that GO–SA could specifically transport the DOX into Hela cells over-expressing CD 44 receptors and showed enhanced toxicity.

In this work, sodium alginate (SA) composite films containing propolis extract (PRO) and graphene oxide (GO) were developed. Subsequently, the effects of PRO and GO on different properties of SA composite films were studied, and the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The PRO release properties and fruit preservation performance of the developed composite films were also investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of PRO resulted in a 51.16% increase in tensile strength. The simultaneous incorporation of PRO and GO reduced water vapor permeability (WVP) by 22.56% compared to the SA film. The temperatures at which the SA/GO/PRO film lost 5% of its weight were 8.0°C higher than those of the SA film. The incorporation of GO into the SA/PRO composite film also modulates the release of PRO. Furthermore, the incorporation of PRO and GO improved the tensile strength of the SA film, as reflected in the microstructure of the films. The reduced WVP of the SA composite film allowed the packaged blueberries to exhibit less weight loss and shrinkage, thereby prolonging their shelf life.

The magnetic composite gel bead (Fe3O4–C@SA GB) adsorbent was prepared by sodium alginate (SA) crosslinking with pitaya peel-derived porous carbons (PPDPCs) and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs). The adsorption effects of Fe3O4–C@SA GBs on heavy metal ions (HMIs) and 17 β-estradiol (E2) in water are evaluated by classical kinetic models and isotherm models. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model shows that Fe3O4–C@SA GBs have maximum adsorption capacities of 9.62, 7.50, and 13.61 mg/g for Cu (II), Cd (II), and Pb (II), respectively. Meanwhile, the highest adsorption performance of the synthesized gel beads to E2 is of ca. 276.3 mg/g. In addition, the Fe3O4–C@SA GBs can still maintain a high level of adsorption efficiency after five adsorption cycles, displaying economic efficiency and reusability. Hence, this work provides useful insights into the efficient adsorption elimination of pollutants in sewage and the corresponding adsorption mechanisms.

With the rapid advancement of the printing and dyeing industry, water pollution has emerged as a prominent environmental issue, particularly dye wastewater. In order to construct polymeric adsorbents with rich functional groups for efficient adsorption of dye wastewater, hydrogel spherical adsorbent SA/CMC-Kaolin was prepared by using sodium alginate (SA) as the hydrogel skeleton material, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and kaolin as the strength-reinforcing materials. FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and TG were utilized for comprehensive characterization of the microbeads' characteristics and adsorption mechanism. SA/CMC-K composite microbeads were investigated for the adsorption characteristics of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic models were employed to analyze the adsorption process. Under optimal conditions, SA/CMC-K microbeads demonstrated superior adsorption efficiency for MB, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 84.63 mg/g, a bio-based adsorbent with a high adsorption capacity. The adsorption process exhibited better agreement with the Langmuir isotherm equation and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, SA/CMC-K composite microbeads maintained 71.74% adsorption efficiency after five cycles. Overall, the prepared microbeads, which are economical and environmentally friendly, are promising for the absorption of dye wastewater.

In this study, pH-responsive whey protein (WP)/sodium alginate (SA) composite hydrogel beads using the ionic gelation method were described and evaluated for their potential as delivery carriers for theaflavin (TF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the interaction between WP and SA in the hydrogel beads is driven primarily by the strong intermolecular interactions, including hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attractions. The swelling ratio of the beads possesses good pH dependence and pH reversibility, effectively preventing the release of TF in the gastric environment. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of TF in hydrogel beads ranged from 94.995 ± 0.03 to 95.709 ± 0.14, with a loading capacity (LC) of 27–34 mg/g. In in vitro digestion simulations, owing to the pH responsiveness, hydrogel beads released minimal TF throughout gastric digestion and were fully released in the intestine phase. Additionally, the release kinetics of TF from the beads were further examined in a simulated intestinal environment. These findings suggest that the hydrogel bead system is a promising carrier for encapsulating TF, offering a theoretical and experimental basis for its future application in the food industry.

Removing organic pollutants from wastewater is crucial to prevent environmental contamination and protect human health. Immobilized enzymes are increasingly being explored for wastewater treatment due to their specific catalytic activities, reusability, and stability under various environmental conditions. Peroxidases, such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and myoglobin (Mb), are promising candidates for immobilized enzymes utilized in wastewater treatment due to their ability to facilitate the oxidation process of a wide range of organic molecules. However, the properties of the carrier and support materials greatly influence the stability and activity of immobilized HRP and Mb. In this research, we developed immobilized HRP and Mb using support material composed of sodium alginate and CaCl2as carriers and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. Following this, the efficacy of immobilized HRP and Mb in removing aniline, phenol, and p-nitrophenol was assessed. Both immobilized enzymes removed all three organic pollutants from an aqueous solution, but Mb was more effective than HRP. After being immobilized, both enzymes became more resilient to changes in temperature and pH. Both immobilized enzymes retained their ability to eliminate organic pollutants through eight treatment cycles. Our study uncovered novel immobilized enzyme microspheres and demonstrated their successful application in wastewater treatment, paving the way for future research.
