Energy transfer mechanism of carboxymethyl chitosan-Eu3+/Tb3+ complex materials and application in multicolor LED

Jiaqi Wang,Yuanhang Li,Xiaotong Li,Jiangbo Pan,Di Wang,Shuangying Wei,Chengyu Wang,Jian Li

Biological macromolecules had been studied as ligands in recent years, which not only give the complexes excellent polymer properties, but also have many advantages such as biodegradability. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) is excellent biological macromolecular ligand because of its abundant active amino and carboxyl groups, and it can smoothly transfer energy to Ln 3+ after coordinating. To further study the energy transfer mechanism of CMCh-Ln 3+ complexes, CMCh-Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ complexes with different Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ratios were prepared by using CMCh as a ligand. The morphology, structure, and properties of CMCh-Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ were characterized and analyzed by infrared spectroscopy, XPS, TG and Judd-Ofelt theory, thus the chemical structure of CMCh-Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ was determined. The mechanism of energy transfer was explained in detail, also the Förster resonance transfer model is confirmed, and the hypothesis of energy transfer back was verified by the characterization and calculation methods of fluorescence spectra, UV spectra, phosphorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime. Finally, CMCh-Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ with different molar ratios were used to prepare a series of multicolor LED lamps, and it extends the application range of biological macromolecules as ligands.

Enhanced X-ray-induced luminescence and afterglow of NaLuF4:Gd3+/Tb3+ nanoparticles with Ca2+ doping

Shaolian Sun,Shan Shao,Wuyang Fan,Wenhu Zhang,Fan Xu,Haoming Wei,Bingqiang Cao,Yangqing Wu

The synthesis of efficient nano-scintillators is of great significance for the development of X-ray imaging and other applications. Here, X-ray excited afterglow rare earth nanoparticles β-NaLuF 4 :Gd 3+ /Tb 3+ are investigated. The X-ray-induced luminescence intensity and afterglow duration of NaLuF 4 :Gd 3+ /Tb 3+ nanoparticles are effectively improved by Ca 2+ doping. The optimal luminescence and afterglow performance are achieved when Ca 2+ doping ratio reaches 10%. The change of crystal field symmetry is the main reason for the improvement of luminescence performance. According to the thermoluminescence curve, it is proved that Ca 2+ doping increases the trap concentration and further enhances the afterglow. This study provides the research basis for the application of persistent luminescence materials in biomedical and other fields.

Interfacial Interaction in Colloidal Heteronanostructures of Tb3+-Complex and Eu3+-Doped Nanosheets: Implications for Bioprobes

Rui Rui Yang,Pin Wang,Fangrui Cheng,bang lan,Yuxiang Yu,Jing Wang,Shi Ye

It is essential for luminescent materials to be compatible with complex bioenvironments when used for probing biological events. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a common process in gaining enhanced luminescence signals, in which the interaction between the donor and acceptor plays a decisive role in the optical properties of heterostructured bioprobes. Yet systematic investigations on the gradient amphiphilic and electrostatic interaction effect on luminescence in a complex environment are scarce. Heteronanostructures of Tb(C12H8N2)2(NO3)3 nanocrystals and Eu3+-doped oxide nanosheets in various solutions with varied double electric layers and amphiphilic capacities are chosen for the investigation. It is found that a complex redox process takes place and an interfacial Tb–O bond is formed during preparation of the heteronanostructures. According to the decay dynamics of Tb3+ and Eu3+ emission of the heteronanostructures in various amphiphilic alcohol solvents, the interfacial Tb3+ → Eu3+ energy transfer efficiency apparently displays an extraordinary dependence on alkyl chain length after excluding the refractive index effect, while the zeta potential data suggest that the interfacial electrostatic force on the heteronanostructures should be dominant via the electric double layer in alcohol solvents with short alkyl chain. As the length of alkyl chain increases, the amphiphilic force on the heteronanostructures with amphiphilic Tb(phen)2(NO3)3 and hydrophilic Eu3+-doped nanosheets tends to be overwhelming. These competitive forces strengthen the interaction between Tb3+ and Eu3+ and result in enhancement of the interfacial Tb3+ → Eu3+ energy transfer efficiency. The research helps design potential new bioprobes concerning the interfacial interaction in amphiphilic and salty biosystems.

Thermal enhancement of the green luminescence of Tb3+ ion generated by ground state thermal population

Leipeng Li,Feng Qin,Lu Li,Hong Gao,Qin Deng,Zhiguo Zhang

Here a strategy was proposed to realize the thermal enhancement of the green luminescence of Tb 3+ ion through ground state thermal population. The 5 D 4 - 7 F 5 emission line of Tb 3+ ion was observed under the excitation of a commonly used 405 nm laser diode for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Its intensity was found to increase by ten times upon increasing the temperature from 343 to 783 K. Moreover, this change law was in good accordance with the Boltzmann distribution . It was confirmed that the thermal population of the 7 F 5 state at the expense of the depopulation of the 7 F 6 ground state, namely the ground state thermal equilibrium, should be responsible for this uncommon phenomenon. For comparison, the Xe lamp was also used to directly excite the 7 F 6 - 5 D 3 absorption line of Tb 3+ ion. In this case, the 5 D 4 - 7 F 5 emission line of Tb 3+ ion was also observed. Different from the former case, this line decreased monotonously upon increasing the temperature over the experimental range. The reason for this change law was also discussed.

Tunable luminescence evolution and energy transfer behavior of Na3Sc2(PO4)3:Ce3+/Tb3+/Eu3+ phosphors

Yufeng Zhang,Jie Xiong,Dingyi Shen,Wenpeng Xia,Jie Yu,Yanfei Zhang,Jun Yang,Shanshan Hu,Yuxin Wan,Haili Wen,Hang Ye,Yucan Liu

A series of color-tunable emitting Na3Sc2(PO4)3:Ce3+/Tb3+/Eu3+ (NSPO) phosphors were prepared by a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and low temperature calcination. The phase structure, photoluminescence and energy transfer properties of the samples were studied in detail. The tunable colors were obtained by co-doping the Tb3+ ions into the NSPO:Ce3+ or NSPO:Eu3+ phosphors with varying concentrations. Under UV excitation, the energy transfers from Tb3+ to Eu3+ in the NSPO host occurred mainly via a dipole–dipole mechanism, and the critical distances of the ion pairs (Rc) was calculated to be 17.94 Å by the quenching concentration method. And that, the emission colors of the NSPO:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors could be adjusted from green through yellow to red because of the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+. Based on its good photoluminescence properties and abundant emission colors, the NSPO:Ce3+/Tb3+/Eu3+ phosphors might be promising as potential candidates for solid-state lighting and display fields.

High quality white light emission from Sb3+, Tb3+ and Mn2+ co-doped Cs2NaScCl6 double perovskites

Deyuan Yang,Ruirui Cui,Chaoyong Deng

Recently, the splendid strategy of co-doping ns2 electron configuration ions with rare-earth ions in all-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites has been proposed to overcome the weak absorption cross-section of the f–f transition of rare-earth ions and achieve efficient white emission. But few of them can really provide effective red emission in lead-free halide double perovskites, despite the wide variety of rare-earth ions, and lead-free halide double perovskites with co-doping rare-earth ions and doping ns2 electron configuration ions usually exhibit an unsatisfactory color rendering index due to the narrow characteristic emission peaks of rare-earth ions. To address this issue, Mn2+ ions with red wide peak emission were introduced into Cs2NaScCl6 simultaneously with Tb3+ ions and Sb3+ ions in this work. The white light emission was observed in Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ under 336 nm excitation because the presence of energy transfer from Sb3+ ions to Mn2+ and Tb3+ ions enhances fluorescence performances of Mn2+ and Tb2+. The temperature-dependent spectrum of Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ shows that it exhibits a stable white emission in the temperature range of 298–398 K, and it's emission intensity at 398 K only decreases by less than 18% of the initial intensity (at 298 K). Excitingly, WLED devices with a quite high color rendering index of 93.6, which is one of the best in lead-free halide double perovskites, and nearly standard white light CIE coordinates of (0.3425, 0.3435), have been fabricated by using Cs2NaScCl6:0.01Sb3+,0.12Tb3+,0.07Mn2+ and a 340 nm LED chip and can maintain a good white color stability at different working times and currents. These results indicate that Cs2NaScCl6:Sb3+,Tb3+,Mn2+ is an outstanding candidate for WLED applications.

Luminescent bio-sensors via co-assembly of hen egg white lysozyme with Eu3+/Tb3+-complexes

Min Zhang,Miao Qiu,Zengkun Li,Rui Xu,Yao Wang,Wei Wang,Christopher D. Snow,Matt J. Kipper,Laurence A. Belfiore,Jianguo Tang

Protein crystals have advantageous properties as framework materials, such as porosity and organized, high-density functional groups with the potential for guest specificity. Thus, protein crystal materials open up vast opportunities for fluorescent species doping and drug sensing. In this work, we explore this frontier by combining two lanthanide complexes with hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) and directly obtaining co deposited structures in one step using an anti-solvent method different from the previous two-step method. Cross-linking of the protein was achieved using glutaraldehyde, ensuring the stability of the assembly in diverse solvent environments. The use of glutaraldehyde achieved protein cross-linking, ensuring the stability of the components in various solvent environments, including no leakage of fluorescent substances in ultrapure water and anhydrous ethanol. Differential fluorescence quenching effects of amino acids on the two doped luminescent complexes were observed. Introduction of amino acids, varying in concentration and type, resulted in distinct fluorescence enhancement or quenching effects on the protein assembly loaded with the complexes, and the detection results are reflected through different fitting equations and parameters. By exploring the application of this hybrid material for amino acid detection, this work lays the groundwork for broader applications.

Ultra-sensitive Tb3+/G-quadruplex fluorescence detection of oxidative DNA damage coupled with DNA glycosylase

Ting Wang,Rong-Fu Huang,Zeqin Chen

Development of simple, sensitive and rapid sensing strategy for DNA damage induced by chemical reagents is urgent demand. In this assay, a Tb 3+ /G-quadruplex fluorescence system was proposed for the sensitive detection of DNA damage induced by Fenton reaction. The specific guanine-rich oligonucleotides can form G-quadruplex induced by Tb 3+ , leading to an enhancement of Tb 3+ emission due to energy transfer from guanine to Tb 3+ . After a DNA damage reaction with Fenton reagents, an obvious fluorescence decrease was observed due to the structure change of Tb 3+ /G-quadruplex. which was also confirmed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and circular dichroism. The Fe 2+ -mediated Fenton reaction with as low as 0.01 μM Fe 2+ and 0.04 μM H 2 O 2 induced oxidative DNA damage can be detected. Additionally, the human 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase (hOGG 1) was introduced to amplify DNA oxidation damage, by converting DNA oxidative nucleobases to strand break. Over 30-fold lower detection limit of 0.3 nM Fe 2+ and 1.2 nM H 2 O 2 was achieved. Alternative specific DNA damage or other DNA repair enzymes produced much less fluorescence decrease, demonstrating its good selectivity. It shows the potential to become a universal screening tool for the rapid and sensitive assessment of the genotoxicity of the overwhelming number of chemicals in environment.

Versatile Tb3+–carbon-dot nanoplatform for fluorescence detection and in situ inactivation of bacterial spores

Xinxin Wang,Shan Sun,Ke Cheng,Tao Lin,Henggang Wang,Haoyi Sun,Hengwei Lin,Peng Wang

Pathogenic bacterial spores pose a considerable threat to human health due to their ability to survive extreme environmental conditions. Thus, sensitive detection and efficient inactivation of these spores are essential for preventing disease transmission. However, most existing studies have predominantly concentrated on detection alone. Herein, we developed a versatile nanoplatform that integrates sensitive bacterial spore sensing and in situ spore inactivation capabilities by assembling terbium ions (Tb 3+ ) with photosensitizing carbon dots (CDs), referred to as Tb-CDs nanoassemblies (NAs). By leveraging the unique optical properties of CDs and Tb 3+ ions, along with the antenna effect of lanthanides, Tb-CDs NAs demonstrated highly sensitive visual detection of the key bacterial spore biomarker, pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA), achieving a low detection limit of 0.68 μM and excellent selectivity. Additionally, Tb-CDs NAs exhibited practical sensing capabilities in various environments, including spore suspensions and real samples, while monitoring bacterial spore germination. Further studies confirmed that the DPA-triggered disassembly of Tb-CDs NAs led to the release of CDs, enabling higher affinity for spores and in situ inactivation through singlet oxygen generation. This work underscores the potential of CDs-based assemblies for simultaneous pathogen detection and inactivation, providing promising tools for preventing bacterial spread and contamination.

Superior Circularly Polarized Luminescence Brightness Achieved with Chiral Heteroleptic Nine-Coordinate Coumarin-Based Tb3+ Complexes

Jiaxiang Liu,Wenqi Song,Huizhe Niu,Ying Lu,Haiyan Yang,Wentao Li,Yu-zhen Zhao,Zongcheng Miao

In order to facilitate the practical application of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecules, the CPL brightness (BCPL) must be optimized. We have applied a binary modular strategy to synthesize two chiral organo-Tb3+ complexes, [Tb(Coum)3(1R,2R-Ph-PyBox)] (2) and [Tb(Coum)3(1S,2S-Ph-PyBox)] (5), combining 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-coumarin (Coum) and enantiopure 2,6-bis(4-phenyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl) pyridine (1R,2R/1S,2S-Ph-PyBox). The photophysical properties of these novel complexes have been fully characterized. The combined point-chiral induction capability of chiral bis(oxazoline) derivatives and the outstanding photophysical properties of the coumarin-derived ligand have resulted in an intense excited-state chiroptical activity (|glum| = 0.097–0.103) for both Tb3+ enantiomers, with a bright Tb3+-centered high-purity green emission (ΦPL = 74%) and enhanced antenna-centered absorption behavior (ε320 nm = 47820–47940 M–1 cm–1). A superior BCPL (1132.7–1205.8 M–1 cm–1 at 5D4 → 7F5) has been established for complexes 2 and 5. The strategy adopted in this work provides a new route to chiroptical organo-Tb3+ luminophores with outstanding comprehensive performance.

Organic doping-based optimization of triplet radioluminescence of Tb3+/Ga3+ metallacrown scintillators for X-Ray detection

Mengke Bai,Wenya Lai,Fei Zhou,Hangqing Xie,Jing Xu,Jiadi Lian,Shiqing Xu

Triplet excitons serve as a critical pathway for harvesting energy released during X-ray interactions with heavy elements; however, strategies to enhance their activation efficiency remain limited. Herein, we report a novel organic doping approach to optimize the triplet radioluminescence (RL) of Tb 3+ /Ga 3+ metallacrown (Tb-1) scintillators. By introducing 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA) as a ligand dopant, a new scintillation crystal, Tb-1-PMA, is synthesized. Compared to the Tb-1 crystal, Tb-1-PMA exhibits a significant reduction in metal content while maintaining structural integrity. When excited by ultraviolet light or X-rays, Tb-1-PMA crystal emit bright green light, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is increased from 36.8 % to 45.3 %. The RL intensity of Tb-1-PMA surpasses that of Tb-1 by 50 %, achieving a relative light yield of 17,000 photons MeV −1 , accompanied by nearly eliminated afterglow. These enhancements stem from improved energy-level alignment between organic triplet excitons and Tb 3+ in Tb-1-PMA, enabling efficient energy transfer. The RL intensity demonstrates a linear response to X-ray dose rates, with a detection limit of 0.044 μGy s −1 , approximately 123-fold lower than conventional diagnostic doses. This work provides a cost-effective and scalable strategy for designing organic-doped high-performance triplet-emitting scintillators.

Enhancing luminescence properties of NaBiF4:Eu3+,Tb3+ red-emitting phosphor for near-ultraviolet stimulated pc-WLED

Fang Fang,Yuanhao Chen,Boyan Liu,Xiaoshan Zhang,Benchun Li,Dawei Zhang,Dechao Yu

Red-emitting phosphors efficiently excited by near-ultraviolet (NUV) light are desired for high-quality phosphor-converted white LED (pc-WLED) devices. In this work, Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ codoped NaBiF 4 phosphors were designed as promising NUV-excitable candidates for the red component in pc-WLEDs. Under 379 and 395 nm excitation, the NaBiF 4 :Eu 3+ ,Tb 3+ samples yield intense red emissions, predominantly at 616 nm due to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition of the Eu 3+ ion. The Tb 3+ dopants bring in synergistic effects in greatly enhancing the Eu 3+ red luminescence, i.e. resonant energy transfer (ET) from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ and crystal field perturbation surrounding Eu 3+ . The relevant spectroscopic properties were systematically studied using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The optimized NaBiF 4 :20%Eu 3+ ,15%Tb 3+ sample features a nearly complete Tb 3+ → Eu 3+ ET, leading to a pure Eu 3+ red luminescence, and showing quantum yield values of 44.2% and 51.6% upon 379 and 395 nm excitation, respectively. Notably, the red luminescence from the NaBiF 4 :20%Eu 3+ ,15%Tb 3+ system has a high thermal stability, which at 398 K sustains 80.2% of its room-temperature luminescence intensity under 395 nm excitation. Via coating a mixture of commercial BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ blue- and (Ba,Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ green-emitting phosphors and the optimized phosphor on NUV ∼ 380 and 395 nm LED chips, the homemade 395 nm-excited pc-WLED exhibited interesting warm lighting performance, i.e. color rendering index (Ra) ∼ 90 and correlated color temperature (Tc) ∼ 3884 K, while the 380 nm-excited pc-WLED had Ra ∼88 and Tc ∼ 4685 K. That is, the NUV ∼395 nm chip (illumination also overlapping with the Tb 3+ absorption around 380 nm) is practically preferable to excite the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ pc-LED for high-qualified warm white lighting. All the results unveil the viable schemes to develop the Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ co-activated red-emitting phosphors, offering promising prospects for novel NUV-excitable pc-WLED light sources.
