The thermal adsorption residue (TDR) from oil sludge co-contaminated soil was employed to remove As(III), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) in aqueous solution. The results showed that the TDR could efficiently neutralize the acid and adapt to the extensive pH. The adsorption of four heavy metals on TDR could be divided into three stages. The maximum adsorption capacity were 86.59, 249.07, 339.88, 322.86 mg·g −1 for As(III), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), respectively. The coexistence of Zn(II)/Cu(II)/Cd(II) could promote As(III) removal but As(III) led to decreasing of Zn(II)/Cu(II)/Cd(II) adsorption capacity in binary system. There was a significant competitive adsorption on TDR among the three cations which followed the selectivity sequence of Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II). The SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that the As(III) was removed via formation of Ca-As precipitation, and the Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) were removed through precipitating as hydroxides/carbonates/silicates combining with ion exchange. Specially, the Cu(II) mainly precipitated in the form of Cu 4 (SO 4 )(OH) 6 ⋅2H 2 O and Cu 4 (OH) 6 SO 4 under sulfuric acid solution environment. Overall, this study indicates the potential of TDR as a cost-effective adsorbent in acid heavy metals contaminated wastewater treatment .

A novel fluorescence “off-on-off” probe was presented to detect Zn(II) and oxalic acid (OA) based on nitrogen-doped MXene quantum dots ( N -MQDs), which were synthesized by an ultrasound approach at room temperature with nitric acid and ethylenediamine. These N -MQDs displayed small size (<10 nm), water dispersibility, and good photoluminescence. Furthermore, the N -MQDs showed an selective response towards Zn(II) through fluorescence enhancement, with a limit of detection (LOD) calculated as 0.127 μM in the linear range of 0–20 μM. Then, the fluorescence of N -MQDs/Zn(II) system could be selectively quenched after adding OA, with an effective response in the range from 0 to 20 μM (LOD: 0.883 μM). The fluorescence “turn-on” and “turn-off” properties of N -MQDs were resulted from the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of Zn(II) and the coordination between OA and Zn(II), respectively. This sensing platform was successfully applied for Zn(II) and OA detection in actual environmental and vegetable samples.

A 2D network of {[Zn(Hbcpt)(H2O)3]·7H2O} (1) was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. By employing different N-donor ligands into the system of 3,5-bis(4′-carboxyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazole (H3bcpt) and Zn(II) cations, six novel entangled coordination polymers, namely, {[Zn2(bcpt)(μ2-OH)(H2O)]·(py)·4H2O} (2), {[Zn2(Hbcpt)2(bpa)2]·2H2O} (3), {[Zn(Hbcpt)(bpp)]·[Zn(Hbcpt)(bpp)]·2.5H2O} (4), {[Zn5(bcpt)2(biimpy)2(μ2-OH)4]·5H2O} (5), {[Zn2(bcpt)(bib)(μ2-OH)]·H2O} (6), and {[Zn2(bcpt)(bix)4(μ2-OH)]·3H2O} (7) (H3bcpt = 3,5-bis(4′-carboxyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazole, bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, bpp = 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)propane, biimpy = 2,6-bis(imidazole-1-yl)pyridine, bib = 1,4-bis(N-imidazolyl)butane, bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene, py = pyridine), were obtained. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that, with the different N-donor ligands, the resulting compounds present entangled structures with different topologies. Compound 1 shows a 2D (4, 4) network, and the adjacent sheets are extended into a 3D supramolecular framework via hydrogen-bonding interactions. Interesting, by introducing a series of ditopic N-donor ligands into the reaction system, compounds 2–7 with entangled structures were harvested. Compound 2 exhibits a 3D self-penetrating network with an 8-connected bcu topology. Compound 3 features an 8-fold dia network showing an unusual [4 + 4] mode of interpenetration. Compound 4 is comprised of two parts of undulated 2D 44-sql networks, and the adjacent undulated layers are parallel interpenetrated to each other to give a 2D → 3D polycatenated framework. Compound 5 presents an unusual 3D self-penetrating network with a novel 4,6,6-connected trinodal network with the point symbol of (32·4·52·6)(32·4·56·66}{32·56·66·7}. Compound 6 shows a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D architecture with 6-connected sxd topology. Compound 7 displays an unprecedented self-penetration derived from abnormal [3 + 2] 5-fold interpenetrating dia subnets. Structural diversity of these compounds suggests that different N-donor ligands can induce the organic ligand to present different conformations and coordination modes, and the influence on the final structures. Furthermore, the luminescent properties of compounds 1–7 have been investigated in the solid state.

Four new Zn(II)-, Cd(II)-, Mn(II)-, and Co(II) - based 1D to 2D coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesized from metal salts and 1,4-di(1-imidazol-1-yl)naphthalene (DIN) ligand via the coordination reaction under hydrothermal conditions with quantitative yields , namely, [Zn(SO 4 )(DIN)(H 2 O)] ( CP-1 ), [Cd(NO 3 ) 2 (DIN)] ( CP-2 ), [Mn(SO 4 )(DIN)(H 2 O) 3 ] ( CP-3 ), and [Co(NO 3 ) 2 (DIN) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] ( CP-4 ). The CPs were analyzed and characterized using FT-IR, Elemental Analysis , TGA , SC-XRD, and PXRD . CP-1 was selected as a model sensor for fluorescence detection , and the sensor exhibited high quenching rates at two excitation wavelengths of λ ex = 230 and 290 nm, and at a single emission wavelength of λ em = 350 nm. At these two different excitation wavelengths, CP-1 behaved differently during the sensing of pesticides, and the highest quenching rate was achieved by the sensor for nitenpyram ( λ ex = 230 nm) and imidacloprid ( λ ex = 290 nm). Furthermore, during the sensing of vitamins, CP-1 encountered a strong quenching effect toward vitamin B2 . During the sensing processes, the inner filter effect (for nitenpyram , imidacloprid , and vitamin B2), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (for nitenpyram, imidacloprid, and vitamin B2), and photo-induced electron transfer (for vitamin B2) were the mechanisms responsible for fluorescence quenching .

Zn(II) and dialkyldimethyl ammonium compounds (DADMAC) are common heavy metal and disinfectant contaminants in wastewater treatment plants. The response of sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) system under single and joint stress with different concentrations of Zn(II) (1–25 mg/L) and DADMAC (0.2–10 mg/L) was evaluated using sequencing batch fixed-bed biofilm reactors in this study. The joint stress of high concentrations of Zn(II) and DADMAC had stronger inhibitory effects on microbial activity and metabolic function genes compared to the single stress, thus significantly inhibiting the performance of the SAD system. Furthermore, Zn(II) stress contributed to the proliferation of resistance genes (RGs) in water (w-RGs), whereas stress of DADMAC was able to induce the proliferation of intracellular RGs (si-RGs) and extracellular RGs (se-RGs) in sludge. And under the joint stress of Zn(II) and DADAMC, the abundances of si/se-RGs were much higher than that under single stress, with a higher risk of RGs transmission. The α-Helix/(β-sheet + random coil) in tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances correlated positively with si- tnpA-04 and se- tnpA-04 . Horizontal gene transfer via mobile genetic elements was the main mode of RGs transmission. This work assessed the risk of DADAMC and Zn(II) in the SAD system and established new insights into the transmission of three-fraction RGs under DADMAC and Zn(II) stress.
