A K⁺/Zn²⁺ dual-ion electrolyte is proposed to suppress dissolution and stabilize KZnHCF counter electrodes. • The electrolyte ensures high electrochemical activity for both the PB working electrode and the KZnHCF counter electrode. • The optimized PB-KZnHCF device achieves a large optical modulation, fast switching speed, and excellent cycling stability. KZnHCF (K 2 Zn 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 ), a typical Prussian blue analog (PBAs), exhibits high transparency regardless of the redox states, making it an ideal transparent counter electrode material for electrochromic devices. However, its cycling durability is seriously limited by stability issues deriving from material dissolution. In this work, we propose a K + /Zn 2+ dual-cation electrolyte to enhance the cycling durability of KZnHCF by changing the Zn 2+ dissolution equilibrium between the electrolyte and the electrode. This electrolyte formulation is also compatible with the Prussian Blue (PB) electrochromic electrodes, enabling excellent electrochromic performance. Based on these merits, a high-performance electrochromic device is constructed by pairing the PB working electrode with the KZnHCF counter electrode in the K + /Zn 2+ electrolyte. This device demonstrates a desirable optical modulation of 52.7% at 633 nm with a coloration and bleaching response time of 5 and 14 s, respectively. After 1000 cycles, 77.8% of the initial optical modulation retains, indicating a decent cycling stability. This work underscores the promise of electrolyte engineering in addressing stability challenges of electrodes, offering a viable pathway to improve the performance of Prussian blue (PB)-based electrochromic devices. Organic materials have attracted considerable attention in rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their sustainability and structural tunability. However, the electrochemical performance of existing organic electrodes is severely constrained by limited redox-active sites, high solubility and short conjugated backbones. Herein, a conjugated N-heterocyclic anhydride-based framework, benzoquinone-fused dianhydride (NTBQ), was constructed via solid-state condensation to enable highly reversible Zn 2+ /H + storage. The strategic integration of C=O groups triggers intramolecular electrostatic potential reconstruction and activates adjacent C=N sites, enabling fast and thermodynamically spontaneous multi-electron Zn 2+ /H + co-insertion. The rational structural design endows the NTBQ cathode with a remarkable initial discharge specific capacity of 434.6 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 and excellent rate capability. Moreover, the extended π-electron delocalization significantly strengthens intermolecular π-π interactions, enhancing the dissolution resistance of NTBQ in aqueous electrolytes and affording long-lasting cycling durability (88.1% retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). Systematic mechanistic studies demonstrate that the superior electrochemical performance originates from the synergistic redox chemistry of C=O/C=N dual-active centers within the anhydride-based skeleton. These findings demonstrate that intramolecular electronic modulation can effectively evoke multi-electron redox activity, providing an effective avenue for designing high-performance organic cathodes toward advanced AZIBs. Structural optimization from NTPH to NTBQ via incorporation of additional C O groups induces intramolecular electrostatic potential redistribution, enhancing π-electron delocalization and activating adjacent C N sites. This creates synergistic C O/C N dual-redox centers for efficient multi-electron Zn 2+ /H + co-insertion. Download: Download high-res image (130KB) Download: Download full-size image

This study developed a novel Bis(1,6-hexamethylenetriamine penta(methylenephosphonic acid)) (BHMTP)-modified hydroxyapatite (30BH-HAP) composite for efficient removal of heavy metal ions. The material was synthesized via coprecipitation and characterized by BET, FTIR, XRD, and SEM. BHMTP incorporation increased the specific surface area from 88.38 to 140.3 m2/g (a 58.7% enhancement) and total pore volume from 0.27 to 0.35 cm3/g. In separate batch adsorption experiments, the optimized 30BH-HAP exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities of 239.5 mg/g for Cu2+ and 268.3 mg/g for Zn2+ at pH 6.0, which are 6.12 and 5.38 times higher than commercial HAP, respectively, and surpass most previously reported adsorbents. Mechanistic studies combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, Independent Gradient Model (IGM), and Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that BHMTP’s phosphonic acid groups form stable coordination complexes (P═O···M2+) with metal ions. The material maintained >80% regeneration efficiency after 5 cycles and demonstrated strong interference resistance (>84% capacity retention in the presence of 10 mM Ca2+). This work provides a sustainable strategy for heavy metal ion remediation through the functional reuse of industrial phosphonates, offering novelty in material design and application.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries owing to their abundant zinc resources, low cost, environmental friendliness, and impressive theoretical specific capacity of 820 mAh g −1 . However, zinc anodes face significant challenges, including short cycle lifetimes and poor reversibility, primarily due to rampant dendrite growth and the inevitable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To address these issues, an artificial protective layer of Ca-doped LaCrO 3 (denoted as LCCO2) was coated onto zinc foil utilizing a facile doctor blade casting method. Experimental results demonstrate that the dense and uniform LCCO2 coating effectively suppresses side reactions, regulates the electric field at the zinc anode interface, and facilitates rapid ion migration coupled uniform zinc deposition, thereby enhancing anode stability. Remarkably, symmetrical cells with LCCO2 coating exhibit a stable cycle lifespan of 1500 h at 5 mA cm −2 , along with highly reversible zinc plating/stripping behavior. Furthermore, the LCCO2@Zn||MnO 2 full cell also delivers a high reversible capacity of 174 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 , underscoring the advantages of the LCCO2 protective layer in achieving highly reversible Zn anodes.

Graphical A hydrothermal process is used for co-doping Mo and Zn into tunnel-structured MnO 2 (MZMO), enhancing its ion diffusion kinetics and electrical conductivity by introducing impurity energy levels and generating oxygen vacancies. This co-doping strategy also stabilizes the MnO 2 framework, enabling the MZMO cathode to achieve exceptional capacity, highly reversible H + /Zn 2+ co-intercalation, and prolonged cycle life. To address the rising demand for eco-friendly and efficient energy storage devices, rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) are emerging as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage. α-MnO 2 has attracted extensive attention for its open channels and exceptional Zn 2+ storage capacity. However, the electrochemical performance of α-MnO 2 is significantly hindered by severe structural collapse and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, we propose a simple hydrothermal approach for co-doping Mo and Zn into tunnel-structured MnO 2 (MZMO). The ion diffusion kinetics of MZMO are optimized due to ameliorated electrical conductivity by doped cations and introduced oxygen vacancies within the MnO 2 lattice. Moreover, Mo and Zn co-doping stabilizes the MnO 2 framework, significantly enhancing its electrochemical performance during prolonged cycling. Charge storage mechanism analysis further validates the extraordinary stability of the MZMO phase structure during the Zn 2+ /H + co-intercalation and deintercalation. The MZMO cathode demonstrates rapid and reversible Zn 2+ storage, with a high capacity of 395 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , and the capacity remains at 136 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . This study demonstrates Mo and Zn co-doping is an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of MnO 2 , offering valuable insights for developing other promising cathodes for AZIBs.

Zn2+-doped carbon quantum dots (Zn-CDs) and polycarbodiimide (PCDI) were utilized as reactive compatibilizers to improve the material properties of polylactic acid/poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blends. Extensive investigations were conducted to evaluate the mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of the composite materials. In addition, the synergistic interaction of PCDI and Zn-CDs in PLA/PBAT blends was also explored. Notably, successful implementations of these PLA/PBAT blends in industrial grade fused deposition molding (FDM) pellet printers were achieved. The results unequivocally demonstrated that the incorporation of PCDI effectively improved the compatibility of PLA/PBAT blends, resulting in excellent mechanical properties. However, due to the poor melt flow behavior, its suitability for melt-printing applications is limited. This issue was resolved by introducing Zn-CDs into the PLA/PBAT blend system. The mechanical tests showed that the samples exhibited a tensile strength of 32.8 MPa under the synergistic effect of PCDI/Zn-CDs, while achieving a remarkable elongation at a break value of 728% and an increase in melt flow rates by 109%. The enhanced mechanism of PCDI/Zn-CDs was further analyzed through microscopic morphology. The reaction between PLA/PBAT terminal carboxyl groups and PCDI resulted in copolymer formation, enhancing the molecular chain entanglement and interphase interfacial adhesion. Moreover, the combination of Zn-CDs strengthened the intermolecular forces through hydrogen bonding and metal coordination, thereby imparting superior thermal properties for printing applications.

Amidoxime groups were successfully introduced to develop a novel amidoxime-functionalized cellulose fiber (AO-Cell) for absorptive removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The chemical structure , and the competitive adsorption of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ by AO-Cell were investigated by experiments study, Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. The results showed the N and O atoms in the amidoxime group can spontaneously interact with Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ through sharing long pair electrons to generate stable coordination structure, which was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Besides, the enlarged surface area, improved hydrophilicity and dispersion offered by AO-Cell facilitate the adsorption process by increasing the accessibility of absorption sites. As results of these synergetic modification, AO-Cell can remain effective in a wide pH range (1–6) and reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. At optimal conditions, the achieved theoretical adsorption capacity is as high as 84.81 mg/g for Cu 2+ and 61.46 mg/g for Zn 2+ in the solution with multiple ions. The competition between Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ in occupying the absorption sites arises from the difference in the metallic ion affinity and covalent index with the adsorbent as demonstrated by the MD analysis. Importantly, AO-Cell demonstrated favorable recyclability after up to 10 adsorption-desorption cycles.

The plating/stripping efficiency of zinc (Zn) is directly related to the efficiency of zinc utilization and cycle stability of the battery, which is affected by factors such as the solvated water-related hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), Zn corrosion, and dendrite formation. Therefore, creating a weak solvate shell for Zn 2+ with reduced solvated water molecules can promote stable deposition and stripping of the zinc anode. In this work, a novel approach using the concentrated charge effect of anions is proposed to remove the solvated water and improve the efficiency of Zn plating/stripping. 3 mol kg −1 (3 m ) ZnCl 2 , Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 , and Zn(BF 4 ) 2 electrolytes are used as the representatives to investigate how anions regulate the solvent shell of zinc ion to achieve high Zn plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE). Computational results show that Cl − has a more concentrated charge compared to ClO 4 − and BF 4 − , indicating a stronger interaction with Zn 2+ . This concentrated charge effect reduces the number of water molecules in Zn 2+ solvation structures. Benefiting from weak solvent structure, the average coulomb efficiency, and cycling stability of the Zn─Cu asymmetric cell using ZnCl 2 electrolyte is better. Additionally, the Zn-NaV 3 O 8 full cell of the ZnCl 2 electrolyte exhibits good electrochemical performance.

Zinc is an essential trace element and its deficiency has been related to skin conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, and some types of cancer. Therefore, detecting zinc ions in the human body with high sensitivity is important. Here, two “turn-on” quinoline-based fluorescent probes ( E )-2-((2-(quinolin-2-yl) hydrazono) methyl) phenol ( QSP-H ) and ( E )-4-chloro-2-((2-(quinolin-2-yl) hydrazono) methyl) phenol ( QSP-Cl ) were fabricated for the detection of Zn 2+ . Both the QSP-H and QSP-Cl revealed low LOD (71 nM for QSP-H , 67 nM for QSP-Cl ) and high selectivity, and worked across a broad pH range (3 ‒12 for QSP-H , 3 ‒11 for QSP-Cl ). The HRMS, 1 H NMR titration, DFT calculations and Job’s plot analysis were employed to explore the mechanism of Zn 2+ detection through QSP-H and QSP-Cl . QSP-H and QSP-Cl were effectively applied to the quantitative assessment of Zn 2+ in two infant formula samples and to the bioimaging-based detection of exogenous Zn 2+ in living cells.

A fluorescence probe has been designed and synthesized, and applied with a combined theoretical and experimental study. Research suggests that the probe can be used to sense Zn 2 + and Hg 2 + through selective turn-on fluorescence responses in the aqueous HEPES buffer (0.05M, pH = 7.4). The limit of detection (LOD) were determined as 1.46 × 10 − 7 M (Zn 2 + ) and 2.50 × 10 − 7 M (Hg 2 + ). Moreover, based on DFT, the geometry optimizations of probe 1, [1-Hg 2 + ] complex and [1-Zn 2 + ] complex were carried out using the Gaussian 09 program, in which the B3LYP function was used. The electronic properties of free probe 1 and the metal complexes were studied based on the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses. The probe 1 has also been successfully applied to detection of Zn 2 + and Hg 2 + in living cells.

MgFe 2 O 4 spinel ferrites have attracted increasing interest as magnetically recyclable photocatalysts owing to their narrow bandgap (~ 1.9 eV) and structural robustness; however, their photocatalytic efficiency is often limited by rapid charge‐carrier recombination. In this work, Mg 1-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x = 0–0.15) photocatalysts were synthesized via co-precipitation route, and the combined effects of Zn 2+ doping and calcination temperature (700–900℃) on their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated using a full factorial experimental design. XRD and TEM analyses confirm the successful incorporation of Zn 2+ into the spinel lattice without secondary phase formation, accompanied by enhanced crystallinity at elevated calcination temperatures. UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra reveal a modest enhancement of visible-light absorption (600–800 nm) with increasing Zn 2+ content, while the fundamental bandgap slightly widens from 1.88 eV (undoped) to 1.95–1.98 eV upon Zn 2+ substitution. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation demonstrates a distinct global performance maximum at x = 0.10 and 800 °C, yielding a degradation efficiency of 97.23% and an apparent rate constant of 0.0402 min⁻ 1 , which is ~ 1.56 times higher than that of undoped MgFe 2 O 4 under identical conditions. Radical scavenging experiments indicate that hydroxyl radicals are the dominant reactive species, predominantly generated via electron-mediated oxygen reduction pathways. The observed enhancement arises from a non-additive, synergistic interaction between Zn 2+ -induced electronic modulation and temperature-controlled crystallinity, rather than from surface area or bandgap narrowing alone. This study provides quantitative evidence for synergistic optimization in doped spinel ferrites and offers guidance for the rational design of efficient, recyclable magnetic photocatalysts.

A triphenylamine-based Schiff base (TPOH) was synthesized as a good fluorescent sensor for recognizing of Zn 2+ . The fluorescence intensity of the probe TPOH was significantly enhanced after coordination with Zn 2+ with a yellow fluorescence at the excitation wavelength of 525 nm. In MeOH-H 2 O (3:7 in v/v) solution, the probe showed excellent selectively for Zn 2+ over most other competing ions, which exhibited an Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) mechanism in the recognition procedure. The reaction stoichiometry of 1:1 between TPOH and Zn 2+ was determined based on the Job’s plot and 1 H NMR spectra, respectively. The HeLa cells maintained over 95 % of viability after 24 h exposure to TPOH, which identified the extremely low toxic of TPOH and can be used for in vivo cell imaging.
