The ZrB 2 –BN composite without ZrC impurity was prepared successfully using reactive hot pressing via carbothermal reduction of ZrO 2 with B 4 C, C, and BN powders. The influences of additives and sintering temperature on the phase and microstructure of composites were investigated. The formation reaction of ZrC was inhibited by decreasing the evaporation of intermediate product B 2 O 3 due to forming a SiO 2 –B 2 O 3 eutectic system with the addition of SiO 2 or SiO 2 – CaF 2 . In comparison, SiO 2 –CaF 2 exhibited better inhibition capacity of ZrC. ZrB 2 –BN composite without impure ZrC phase was achieved. In addition, the content of ZrO 2 decreased with increasing sintering temperature, and finally disappeared when sintered at 1800°C. Moreover, the relative density of the ZrB 2 –BN composite reached 96.9%.

The relationship between the interfacial bonding properties and the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC composites (C f /ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC) is currently under investigation. In this study, C f /ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC composites with varying fiber–matrix interfacial bonding properties were prepared using slurry infiltration and in-situ reactive hot pressing. Polydopamine-derived carbon with different thicknesses was employed as the interphase to create various interfacial bonding properties, where interfacial bonding properties were evaluated using the single-fiber push-out method. Results indicated that a uniform and dense ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC matrix was constructed, and low-porosity composites without fiber degradation were obtained. For composites with a higher interfacial shear strength (ISS) of 342 MPa, flexural strength and fracture toughness were 209 MPa and 7.5 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. For composites with a lower ISS of 64 MPa, flexural strength and fracture toughness increased by 41% and 13%, with showing non-brittle behavior and work of fracture up to 10 kJ·m 2 . By combining analyses of thermal expansion behavior, residual thermal stresses, and thermal shock properties at ultrahigh temperatures, thermal mismatch and thermal damage can be minimized through the modulation of ISS. This approach is beneficial for optimizing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.

In this work, ZrO 2 with different ZrB 2 contents (0, 15, 30,40 wt%) composite powders were synthesized by sol-gel, then they were sprayed on carbon/carbon composites using plasma spraying to construct a three-dimensional (3D) thermal conduction network within the formed coating. Oxyacetylene ablation tests were carried out under 4.2 MW/m 2 to investigate the effect of the 3D thermal conduction network on the ablation resistance of coated samples. The encapsulation structure formed during sol-gel process benefits to slowing the oxidation rate of ZrB 2 and the content of ZrB 2 is critical for establishing a stable 3D thermal conduction network within the coating.

s Continuous carbon fiber-toughened ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics matrix composites (C f /ZrB 2 -SiC), which combine the high strength of carbon fiber needled preforms with the ultra-high-temperature ablation resistance of ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics, exhibit complex responses in the extreme thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling environments. The fracture behavior and damage mechanisms of the lightweight C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were investigated by the thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling tensile tests. The residual strength after oxidation was found to be synergistically reduced by temperature and pre-tensile load, with a linear negative correlation between pre-tensile stress and residual strength. The needled fibers improve the interlaminar toughness but introduce the localized porosity that accelerates oxygen diffusion and oxidative damage. Under air oxidation at 1100°C, pre-tensile stress reopens self-healing microcracks, transforming the oxidation kinetics from diffusion-controlled to reaction-controlled regimes. This study can provide an experimental basis and practical guidance for the design of needled fiber preforms to balance oxidation resistance and mechanical properties.

Based on the previous work on Si 3 N 4 -ZrB 2 , the addition of 2.5 vol.% ZrB 2 promoted α - to β -Si 3 N 4 phase transformation, bimodal microstructure, and toughness and strength improvement after hot-pressing at 1500 °C. However, the mechanism needed to be further explored. In the present work, the effect of ZrB 2 and its oxide impurities (ZrO 2 and B 2 O 3 ) on phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of Si 3 N 4 ceramics with MgO-Yb 2 O 3 additives were studied. Results showed that the addition of B 2 O 3 had no influence on Si 3 N 4 ceramics, whereas the addition of ZrO 2 inhibited the α - to β -Si 3 N 4 phase transformation, formed an uniform equiaxed microstructure, and deceased the toughness and strength. The positive effect of oxide impurities can be eliminated. Based on the STEM analysis , the possible reason was that the addition of ZrB 2 led to the formation of Si-Mg-O-N-Yb-Zr-B liquid phase , and then promoted α - to β -Si 3 N 4 phase transformation.

Balancing light weight, thermal stability, and strong Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption remains a key challenge for advanced high-temperature absorbers. While conventional electrospinning (ESP) can produce nanofibers, its low throughput and tendency to form densely packed 2D films limit the construction of the bulk 3D porous networks required for optimal impedance matching and multiple scattering. Herein, a flexible ZrB 2 /SiC nanocomposite fiber mat was fabricated via an electro-blown spinning (EBS) strategy, which integrates electric field force and high-speed airflow to achieve high-efficiency, large-scale production of 3D interconnected architectures. The introduction of ZrB 2 nanoparticles builds abundant heterogeneous interfaces and enhances interfacial polarization as well as conductive loss. Meanwhile, the EBS process produces ultralight, 3D porous networks with excellent impedance matching and mechanical adaptability. Consequently, the nanocomposite exhibits outstanding integrated performance with an ultralow density of 0.022 g cm −3 , representing a 75% reduction in density compared to conventional ESP-derived samples (0.083 g cm −3 ). Moreover, the nanocomposite demonstrates excellent microwave absorption capabilities, achieving a RL min of −68.8 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.5 GHz at a thickness of 1.7 mm. Furthermore, the nanocomposite mats exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility and low thermal conductivity (0.021 W/m·K), offering a robust and scalable route for multifunctional ceramic-based absorbers.

To address the poor mechanical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) ceramics while maintaining their high directional thermal conduction performance, this study proposes a laminated structure design using h-BN as the soft, thermally anisotropic matrix layer and ZrB 2 -SiC as the hard reinforcing layer. h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated composite ceramics with different layer thickness ratios were fabricated via tape casting and hot-pressing. The h-BN grains maintain strong preferred orientation with their c-axes aligned parallel to the sintering pressure, even after introducing ZrB 2 -SiC layers. At an optimal layer thickness ratio of 1:1, the laminated ceramic achieves the best mechanical performance, with a flexural strength of 169.09 ± 18.67 MPa and a fracture toughness of 8.32 ± 0.97 MPa·m 1/2 , representing increases of 74% and 169%, respectively, compared with tape casted monolithic h-BN ceramics. These enhancements arise from synergistic toughening mechanisms including crack deflection, branching and delamination. Moreover, the laminated structure preserves strong anisotropic thermal conduction. At a layer thickness ratio of 2:1, the composite exhibits the highest thermal conduction anisotropy, with a temperature difference of ∼5 °C between in-plane and through-plane directions at 150 °C. These results demonstrate that the h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated architecture effectively combines high directional heat transfer with significantly improved mechanical properties, offering a promising solution for advanced thermal management in microelectronics and high-power devices.

To address the issues of long preparation cycle and high cost in fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites, C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite was prepared by slurry injection combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI). The dispersion and rheological behavior of slurries with different compositions were investigated, as well as the impact of various slurries and injection methods on the three-dimensional filling of porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite. The porosity of porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite was 24.4–37.2% and the bulk density was 1.70–2.36 g/cm 3 after injection and infiltration. The porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite obtained by double-sided injection has uniform distribution of ceramic phase, and the bulk density and open porosity are 2.36 g/cm 3 and 24.4% when the ceramic content is 70 wt.% in slurry. Additionally, the volume filling rate has increased by 32% compared to single-injection. After 1 h of silicon infiltration at 1450°C, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite were 188.8 MPa and 5.51 MPa·m 1/2 . Compared with other RMI processes, this study showed no significant damage to carbon fibers after low-temperature silicon infiltration, and has certain advantages in mechanical properties. It achieved uniform high solid-content ZrB 2 incorporation and rapid densification, enabling cost-effective short-cycle fabrication of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite.

Based on (i) the low liquidus temperature of Si–Cu systems, (ii) low solubility of Cu in solid Si, and (iii) a strong affinity of Zr to B for the enhanced boride formation, a novel method to remove B from Si using Zr as a trapping agent via a Si–Cu solvent was developed in this study. B-bearing polygonal ZrBx precipitations found at the bottom of test samples were confirmed as ZrB2 by electron probe microanalysis. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the solubility products of ZrB2 in a Si–Cu melt were 2.50 × 10–12 (1258 K, Si-57.0 atom % Cu) and 4.11 × 10–12 (1345 K, Si-50.0 atom % Cu). Finally, the compositions of Si–Cu alloys that can form stable ZrB2 particles were estimated by calculating the solubility products of ZrB2 and the equilibrium contents between B and Zr at different corresponding liquidus temperatures. The proposed method provides the potential for B removal via Si–Cu solvent refinement to realize the large-scale production of solar-grade silicon, thereby overcoming the key limitation to the sustainable utilization of solar energy.

A Hf-based borosilicate glass modification strategy is proposed to enhance the oxidation resistance of ZrB 2 -MoSi 2 ceramics. • Moderate HfO 2 addition forms in-situ dense Zr-Hf-Si-O multiphase glass layer, suppressing oxygen inward diffusion. • ZMGH30 sample shows 23.73% lower oxidation weight gain, 70.38% lower average oxidation rate, and 61.17% hardness retention. To address the issues of loose oxide scale and insufficient protective performance in ZrB 2 -MoSi 2 composite ceramics under ultra-high temperature oxidizing environments, caused by the volatilization of B 2 O 3 and the self-depletion of MoSi 2 , A novel Hf-based borosilicate glass modification strategy is proposed by this work. The effects of varying HfO 2 contents on the oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of the ceramics after oxidation at 1700 °C for 100 min were systematically investigated. The results indicate that, with an appropriate amount of HfO 2 modification, a continuous Zr-Hf-Si-O multiphase glass layer forms in situ during oxidation, significantly suppressing the inward diffusion of oxygen. Compared with the unmodified sample, the ZMGH30 sample exhibits a 23.73% reduction in oxidation weight gain, a 70.38% decrease in average oxidation rate, and an increase in hardness retention to 61.17%. Excessive HfO 2 leads to excessively high viscosity of the glass layer, Hf element agglomeration, and dendritic precipitation, thereby weakening the self-healing ability and deteriorating the oxidation resistance. A new approach for developing ultra-high temperature ceramics that combine excellent oxidation resistance and mechanical reliability is provided by this work.

The (PyC-C sf )/ZrB 2 -SiC-ZrC ceramics are fabricated by reactive spark plasma sintering (RSPS) at 1200 °C. The sample has a low density and intact pyrolytic carbon modified carbon fiber (PyC-C sf ). After three cycles of ablation (heat flux = 2.38 MW/m 2 , t = 120 s), samples demonstrate excellent resistance to oxidative ablation. The mass recession rate and linear recession rate for the sample are 3.41 g/m 2 ∙s and 0.68 µm/s, respectively. Excessive content of carbon destroys the oxide layer by forming large amounts of CO 2 during the ablation process. The inner layer of intact PyC-C sf aggregates around the borosilicate which are denser in the oxide layer. Finally, a porous ZrO 2 -SiO 2 layer and a dense ZrO 2 -SiO 2 -C sf layer are formed on the surface of the sample which resists ablation.

Although ZrB 2 ‒SiC (ZS) ceramics have been extensively researched for reusable space vehicles, the gaseous Si-bearing oxides are actively yielded, which limits their service for ultra-high-temperature applications (>2000°C). In this work, medium-entropy oxide spiral fibers (MEO sf ) with a composition of Zr 0.68 Y 0.07 Ce 0.2 Ti 0.05 O 2‒ δ (Zr 0.68 ) were developed to promote the generation of oxide scale. The MEO sf -ZS composites demonstrated a low ablation rate of 0.27 µm/s when exposed to ten 60 s cycles of oxyacetylene flame at 2150°C. The first-principle calculations revealed that the MEO-Zr 0.68 exhibited minimum lattice distortion in the ferroelastic tetragonal ( t ) phase and a highly integrated crystal orbital overlap of the Ti–O bond, which contributed the good phase stability at high temperature. The enhanced ablation resistance of MEO sf -ZS was ascribed to the outstanding t -phase stability and structural integrity of the oxide scale. The intact MEO-glassy SiO 2 oxide scale formed by capillary resistance effect of spiral geometry finally retarded the active oxidation of SiC grains.
