Synergistically Enhancing Tribological Properties, Oxidation Resistance and Anti-Corrosion of Ti-MAO Coatings via h-BN/SiC Co-doping

Jia Wang,Lin Gao,Chuanyao Dong,Kan Zhang

To enhance the service performance of titanium alloys for demanding high-end equipment applications, an h-BN/SiC-Ti-MAO composite coating was fabricated on Ti6Al4V via one-step micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Optimizing the SiC additive concentration offers an effective way to improve the overall performance of the composite coating in mechanical, tribological, oxidation resistance and anti-corrosion properties. The research results show that the coating prepared with 4 g/L SiC yielded superior multifunctional properties. It possessed a dense microstructure with the lowest porosity (6.45%), high hardness (712 HV) and excellent adhesion. This coating maintained a low friction coefficient of approximately 0.20 from RT to 5 0 0 ∘ C and exhibited the best oxidation resistance at 6 0 0 ∘ C, with a parabolic rate constant ( K P ) of 3 . 3 3 × 1 0 − 4 . Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution further confirmed its optimal anti-corrosion, showing the lowest corrosion current density ( 3 . 3 2 5 × 1 0 − 9 A/cm 2 ) . In contrast, insufficient SiC concentration results in limited performance improvement of the composite coating, whereas excessive concentration introduces microstructural defects, ultimately degrading the overall performance. This study demonstrates that optimized h-BN/SiC co-doping represents an effective strategy for developing high-performance MAO protective coatings on titanium alloys.

Tribological synergy of carboxylic-acid-modified h-BN in polyalphaolefin under divergent contact regimes: Steel-steel versus alumina-steel

Heng An,Xianjun Hou,Kangjun Tan,Danjiao Zhao,Weiwei Guan

: Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is an environmentally friendly lubricant that shows great potential in lubrication applications. However, there is currently a lack of research on the synergistic mechanisms of carboxylic acid-modified h-BN at different friction interfaces. In this study, the tribological mechanism of carboxylic acid-modified h-BN across various contact interfaces was investigated through experimental and molecular dynamics simulations. At the steel-steel contact, wear reductions relative to the base oil were 21.74% for unmodified h-BN, 58.94% for oleic acid (OA)-modified h-BN, and 55.80% for stearic acid (SA)-modified h-BN. At the alumina-steel contact, the corresponding wear reductions were 8.50%, 25.30%, and 23.54%, respectively. Additionally, at the alumina-steel contact, OA-modified and SA-modified h-BN reduced the coefficients of friction by 35.18% and 23.32%, respectively, compared with the base oil. Simulations revealed the adsorption mechanism of carboxylic acids: the carboxyl group anchors to the metal or oxide surfaces, while the alkyl end is compatible with the base oil. Among these, the conformational flexibility of the C=C bond in the OA molecule enables the synergistic anti-wear effect between OA and h-BN. This research outcome can guide the development of high-performance nano-lubricants suitable for multiple interfaces.

Synergy between h-BN tribo-catalytic graphitization and CH4 gas passivation: Achieving ultralow friction in diamond-like carbon film

Lin Chen,Xia Li,Guangan Zhang

Optimizing the tribological performance of moving components with lubricating materials is crucial for reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint. Spin-coating two-dimensional materials represents an effective approach to lowering the friction coefficient of typical lubricating materials such as diamond-like carbon (DLC). However, the influence of third-body introduction on lubricant–environment interfacial interactions remains unclear. Herein, h-BN, which catalyzes carbon graphitization, was selected to systematically investigate its regulatory effect on the tribological behavior of DLC under an energy-gas CH 4 atmosphere. The synergistic effect between the tribo-catalytic action of h-BN and the intrinsic structure of the films leads to significant differences in the degree of friction coefficient improvement for DLC with distinct bonding structures: the friction coefficient of low-sp 3 -content DLC is reduced by 45%, while that of high-sp 3 -content and high-sp 2 -content DLC is significantly enhanced with a reduction of no less than 20%. Structural characterization of the tribological interface reveals that h-BN catalyzes graphitization at the sliding interface, transforming the transfer film on the wear scar from a Gr/amorphous carbon superlattice structure into a coexisting structure of continuous graphene and amorphous carbon. The formation of continuous graphene suppresses interfacial dehydrogenation and strengthens surface passivation. This study reveals the competitive mechanism between third-body tribo-catalytic graphitization and shear-induced gas adsorption at the DLC sliding interface, providing a new strategy for the design of ultra-low-friction DLC films.

Rapid photothermal self-healing bio-based waterborne polyurethane enabled by oxime-urethane and quadruple hydrogen bonds with h-BN

Kangjia Song,Jie Liu,Feifei Zhang,Chenduo Zhang

A high bio-based content (86.3 wt%) waterborne polyurethane was designed using renewable PLA, HCO, and PDI. • Oxime groups and UPy quadruple hydrogen bonds synergistically enhance mechanical properties and self-healing capability. • h-BN doping increases thermal conductivity by 112% and enables photothermal healing. To address the inherent conflict between the environmental sustainability and material durability of bio-based waterborne polyurethane (BWPU), this research proposes a synergistic strategy that integrates bio-based materials, functional nanofillers, and dual dynamic bonding networks. These networks consist of quadruple hydrogen-bonding arrays from 2-amino-6-methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one (UPy) units and dynamic covalent oxime bonds. Firstly, a series of oxime-containing BWPUs was synthesized from bio-based polylactic acid polyol (PLA), hydrogenated castor oil (HCO), and 1,5-pentamethylene diisocyanate (PDI), with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) or 1,4-benzoquinone dioxime (BQDO) as chain extenders instead of conventional small-molecule diols, i.e., 1,4-Butanediol (BDO). Subsequently, a dual dynamic crosslinked network was established via end-capping modification with UPy. Finally, the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was incorporated to enhance thermal conductivity of composite material. The experimental results showed that, compared with the single oxime-based system, the dual dynamic network constructed based on the oxime-urethane and UPy quadruple hydrogen bonds (BWPU-Q-U10) significantly enhances the comprehensive mechanical properties. The toughness of the BWPU-Q-U10 film increases from 1660.3 MJ/m 3 to 2907.4 MJ/m 3 . Furthermore, this material achieves a self-healing efficiency of 97.2% within 24 h at room temperature (25 °C), demonstrating an optimal synergy between mechanical properties and self-healing efficiency. On this basis, the introduction of 10 wt% h-BN, identified as the optimal loading, increases the thermal conductivity of the composite by 112%. Meanwhile, leveraging the photothermal effect of BQDO, this composite achieves a healing efficiency of 86.3% within 5 min under 365 nm UV irradiation. This research presents a durable, bio-based waterborne polyurethane for smart coatings that achieves rapid self-healing while maintaining environmental sustainability. Low-temperature curing epoxy self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings synergistically enhanced by hyperbranched polysiloxanes and MoS2/h-BN heterojunction particles

Kaiming Yang,Feifei Wang,Bingrui Shi,Zhenlong Zhang,Weixu Feng,Guoquan Qi,Hongxia Yan

Developing low-temperature curing and high-performance self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings is a challenge for solving energy waste and environmental problems caused by wear and corrosion. Herein, molybdenum disulfide/hexagonal boron nitride (MoS 2 /h-BN) heterojunction particles, prepared by an inexpensive, efficient and solvent-free ultrasonic-assisted ball milling method, are used as solid lubricants and corrosive media barrier. Meanwhile, hyperbranched polysiloxane with terminal epoxy groups (HSiEp) is utilized to improve both the dispersion of the particles and the interfacial bonding strength between the particles and the epoxy binder. Compared with neat epoxy coating, the average friction coefficient of 45.0 wt% MoS 2 /h-BN/6.0 wt% HSiEp/EP coating decreases from 0.38 to 0.19, while the coating resistance (R 1 ) increases from 9.98 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 to 3.33 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 . This is mainly attributed to the “soft-hard” particle synergy and the high barrier synergy of HSiEp and MoS 2 /h-BN heterojunction particles. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the development of low-energy-consumption and high-performance epoxy self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings.

Laminated structure design for strengthening and toughening of h-BN/ZrB2-SiC composite ceramics with directional thermal conduction performance

Ning Zhang,Zhuo Zhang,Xiping Song,Jing Zhang,Haijun Su

To address the poor mechanical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) ceramics while maintaining their high directional thermal conduction performance, this study proposes a laminated structure design using h-BN as the soft, thermally anisotropic matrix layer and ZrB 2 -SiC as the hard reinforcing layer. h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated composite ceramics with different layer thickness ratios were fabricated via tape casting and hot-pressing. The h-BN grains maintain strong preferred orientation with their c-axes aligned parallel to the sintering pressure, even after introducing ZrB 2 -SiC layers. At an optimal layer thickness ratio of 1:1, the laminated ceramic achieves the best mechanical performance, with a flexural strength of 169.09 ± 18.67 MPa and a fracture toughness of 8.32 ± 0.97 MPa·m 1/2 , representing increases of 74% and 169%, respectively, compared with tape casted monolithic h-BN ceramics. These enhancements arise from synergistic toughening mechanisms including crack deflection, branching and delamination. Moreover, the laminated structure preserves strong anisotropic thermal conduction. At a layer thickness ratio of 2:1, the composite exhibits the highest thermal conduction anisotropy, with a temperature difference of ∼5 °C between in-plane and through-plane directions at 150 °C. These results demonstrate that the h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated architecture effectively combines high directional heat transfer with significantly improved mechanical properties, offering a promising solution for advanced thermal management in microelectronics and high-power devices.

The Synergistic Lubrication Effects of h-BN and g-C3N4 Nanoparticles as Oil-Based Additives for Steel/Steel Contact

Wen Zhong,Jiazhi Dong,Siqiang Chen,Zhe Tong

The synergistic effect of different types of solid particles in liquid lubricants is of great interest. In this work, g-C3N4nanosheets were initially prepared using a calcination method and then as-prepared, and h-BN were used as lubricating additives to the white oil. A comparison between the mixed additives and the single g-C3N4or h-BN additives revealed that the base oil with the addition of g-C3N4and h-BN showed the best lubricating properties. The results show a 12.3% reduction in friction coefficient, resulting in a 68.6% reduction in wear rate compared to the white oil when filled with 0.5 wt% g-C3N4and h-BN (1:1 by weight). Moreover, the addition of g-C3N4and h-BN improves the high-temperature lubrication properties of the white oil. However, the friction coefficient and wear rate increase with increasing oil temperature. The large contact area between g-C3N4and its sliding counterpart and the strong adhesive force between h-BN and its sliding counterpart improve the film formation efficiency, leading to enhanced tribological properties under oil lubrication conditions.

High and stable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy activity of h-BN nanosheet/Au1Ag3 nanoalloy hybrid membrane for melamine determination

Kun Ge,Qiyue Wu,Yonghui Li,Ying Gu

In this work, a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/AuAg nanoalloy hybrids (NAHs) was synthesized to fabricate h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 membrane as a solid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate for sensitive SERS detection of melamine. The AuAg nanoalloys were in situ grown on h-BN by chemical reduction method, and the Au/Ag molar ratio was tuned to achieve optimal SERS performance. After the SERS performance of h-BN/AuAg NAHs with different Au/Ag ratios was analyzed, h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 NAHs were chosen for SERS analysis. The h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 membrane can be obtained through simple filtration of h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 NAHs on chromatographic paper. As expected, the solid SERS substrates of h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 membrane were uniform and demonstrated good selectivity, repeatability and reproducibility for SERS detection of melamine. The results demonstrate that h-BN/Au 1 Ag 3 membrane exhibited high SERS activity for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) with limit of detection (LOD) at 1.0 ng L −1 , and its analytical enhancement factor (AEF) reached 3.6 × 10 8 . The possible enhancement mechanism, including electromagnetic mechanisms (EM) and chemical mechanisms (CM) were illustrated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations in detail, respectively. The concentration of melamine in the 0.05–5.0 mg L −1 range showed good linear relationship ( R 2  = 0.9940) with SERS intensity with LOD of 0.01 mg L −1 . Finally, the recoveries of melamine in liquid milk samples are 87.7–105.7% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) in range of 0.6–2.6%, providing precise safety evaluation of melamine in milk samples.

DIW-Printed Thermal Management PDMS Composites with 3D Structural Thermal Conductive Network of h-BN Platelets and Al2O3 Nanoparticles

Hongyi Zhu,Shunxia Wu,Rui Tang,Yang Li,Gang Chen,Bingxue Huang,Biyou Peng

Electronic devices play an increasingly vital role in modern society, and heat accumulation is a major concern during device development, which causes strong market demand for thermal conductivity materials and components. In this paper, a novel thermal conductive material consisting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a binary filler system of h-BN platelets and Al2O3nanoparticles was successfully fabricated using direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technology. The addictive manufacturing process not only endows the DIW-printed composites with various geometries but also promotes the construction of a 3D structural thermal conductive network through the shearing force during the printing process. Moreover, the integrity of the thermal conductive network can be optimized by filling the gaps between the BN platelets with Al2O3particles. Resultingly, the configuration of the binary fillers is arranged by the shearing force during the DIW process, fabricating the thermal conductive network of oriented fillers. The DIW-printed BN/Al2O3/PDMS with 45 wt% thermal conductive binary filler can reach a thermal conductivity of 0.98 W/(m·K), higher than the 0.62 W/(m·K) of the control sample. In this study, a novel strategy for the thermal conductive performance improvement of composites based on DIW technology is successfully verified, paving a new way for thermal management.

Corrosion Resistance of Modified Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) Nanosheets Doped Acrylic Acid Coating on Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel

Yongzhe Fan,Huazhen Yang,Haisheng Fan,Qi Liu,Chuang Lv,Xue Zhao,Mingxu Yang,Jianjun Wu,Xiaoming Cao

The hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets modified by silane coupling agent (KH560) were doped into acrylic acid coating on the surface of galvanized steel to improve its corrosion resistance. H-BN nanosheets modified by KH560 were prepared and characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the acrylic acid coatings was measured by electrochemical testing. The results show that the corrosion current density of the coating with modified h-BN nanosheets was reduced from 2.2 × 10−5A/cm2to 2.3 × 10−7A/cm2compared with the acrylic acid coating. The impedance of the composite coating with modified h-BN is 4435 Ω·cm2, higher than the BNNS coating (2500 Ω·cm2) and the acrylic acid coating (1500 Ω·cm2). This is due to the physical barrier and electrical insulation properties of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets.Keywords:hot-dip galvanized steel;boron nitride nanosheet;corrosion resistance;acrylic coating

Palladium(II)-Schiff base complex immobilized covalently on h-BN: An efficient and recyclable catalyst for aqueous organic transformations

Weijian Li,Guanghui Lv,Xu Cheng,Rui Sang,Xiaojun Ma,Yong Zhang,Ruifang Nie,Jie Li,Mei Guan,Yong Wu

A moisture- and air-stable palladium(II)-Schiff base complex supported on h-BN was simply prepared by using commercially available reagents. This nanomaterial was applied as an excellent and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions. And it has been characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, XPS , TG and ICP-AES techniques. High yields, ligand-free, low reaction time, water as solvent, non-toxicity and recyclability of the catalyst are the main merits of these protocols. In addition, a series of pharmacologically relevant products were successfully synthesized using this catalyst. Above all, this work opens up an interesting and attractive avenue for the use of h-BN as an efficient support for heterogeneous catalysts.
