Synthesis of hollow Mo2C/carbon spheres, and their application to simultaneous electrochemical detection of hydroquinone, catechol, and resorcinol

Ren Hailong,Zhang Yang,Liu Longlong,Li Yangguang,Wang Dongyang,Zhang Ruyue,Zhang Wenjing,Li Yingchun,Ye Bang-Ce

Hollow molybdenum-dopamine spheres were synthesized and thermally annealed to form hollow Mo 2 C/C spheres. The morphology, composition and electrochemical behavior of spheres were characterized. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with the spheres and then used for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and resorcinol (RS). Distinct oxidation peaks can be observed for HQ, CC and RS at potentials of −0.004 V, 0.10 V and 0.44 V (vs. SCE). The responses to HQ, CC and RS are linear in the concentration ranges of 0.3~1000 μM, 2~2000 μM and 3~600 μM, respectively. The corresponding detection limits are 0.12, 0.19 and 1.1 μM (at S/ N  = 3). The sensor was then applied to quantify HQ, CC, and RS in tap water, river water and vegetable juice. Recoveries ranged from 93.5% to 106.5%. The modified GCE is repeatable, reproducible, stable and selective for HQ, CC and RS. Schematic presentation of a novel electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with  hollow Mo 2 C/ carbon spheres for determination of hydroquinone, catechol, and resorcinol.

Synergistic effect of a cobalt fluoroporphyrin and graphene oxide on the simultaneous voltammetric determination of catechol and hydroquinone

Huang Dong-Lan,Wang Jian,Cheng Fan,Ali Atif,Guo Hui-Shi,Ying Xiao,Si Li-Ping,Liu Hai-Yang

Graphene oxide (GO) was modified with the cobalt(II) and zinc(II) complexes (CoTFPP and ZnTFPP) of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin in order to improve the electrocatalytic activity of GO towards catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). It is found that the CoTFPP-modified GO on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) displays the highest electrocatalytic activity. The response to CC (at 0.14 V vs. SCE) is linear in the 1–220 μM concentration range. The response to HQ (at 0.04 V vs. SCE) extends from 1 μM to 200 μM. The sensitivity and detection limits are 10.40 μA∙μM −1 ∙cm −2 and 0.17 μM for CC, and 8.40 μA∙μM −1 ∙cm −2 and 0.21 μM for HQ. Experimental results indicate that the Co(II) and Zn(II) ions in the porphyrins positively affect the electron transfer rate in the hybrid materials. The GCE modified with CoTFPP/GO was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of CC and HQ in spiked samples of tap and lake water. Schematic presentation of a voltammetric method for simultaneous determination of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). It is based on the use of a cobalt (II) fluoroporphyrin (CoTFPP) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) hybrid.

In Situ Growth of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Nanocrystals on Ordered Macroporous Carbon for Hydroquinone and Catechol Simultaneous Determination

Jing Tang,Renhao Liu,Jie Li,Zhenzhen Hui,Shengbiao Zheng,Jiwei Wu,Jiahao Guo,Xuchun Wang,Jianfei Wang

A Co-containing zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and ordered macroporous carbon (OMC) composite has been made via in situ growing ZIF-67 in the suspension of OMC. Different sizes of ZIF67-OMC-x (400, 700, 1000 nm) hybrid composites were synthesis by adding different amount of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The SEM and TEM images demonstrated that the sizes of ZIF-67 matched well with the macropores of the OMC matrix in as-prepared ZIF67-OMC-400 nm composites. The intriguing structure of ZIF67-OMC-400 hybrid composites utilized synergistic interactions between the large surface area and ordered porosity structure of ZIF-67 and the high conductivity of OMC. More importantly, ZIF67-OMC-400 was explored as a novel modifying material for fabricating electrochemical sensor and then was utilized successfully for catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) simultaneous detection. Under the optimized condition, wide linear responses of this sensor were obtained for HQ and CC detection in the range of 0.1 μM to 100 μM. The modified electrode was successfully demonstrated for real samples such as river water with satisfactory results.

Sweetsop-like α-Fe2O3@CoNi catalyst with superior peroxidase-like activity for sensitive and selective detection of hydroquinone

Min Feng,Shaohua Wen,Xiaofang Chen,Die Deng,Xiupei Yang,Run Zhang

Hydroquinone (HQ) is poorly degradable in the ecological environment and is highly toxic to human health even at a low concentration. The colorimetric method has the advantages of low cost and fast analysis, which provides the possibility for simple and rapid detection of HQ. In this work, a new colorimetric method has been developed for HQ detection based on a peroxidase-like catalyst, α-Fe2O3@CoNi. This sweetsop-like α-Fe2O3@CoNi catalyst enables H2O2 to produce hydroxyl (˙OH), leading to the oxidization of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB. In the presence of HQ, the blue oxTMB is reduced to colorless, which allows for colorimetric detection of HQ in water samples. This method has been validated by detecting HQ in water samples with high selectivity, rapid response, broad detection range (0.50 to 30 μM), and low detection limit (0.16 μM).

Selective and simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol by using a nitrogen-doped bagasse activated carbon modified electrode

Xinyu Zheng,Rongrong Fan,Yingcai Hu,Huining Zhong,Xingyue Yang,Rixin Lv,Xuan Yang,Biao Huang

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a nitrogen-doped activated carbon derived from sugarcane bagasse (NDSBAC) was prepared for the selective and simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). The NDSBAC was obtained via KOH-urea activated method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to survey the surface morphology , adsorption properties and chemical compositions of NDSBAC, respectively. The anodic peak potential between HQ and CC is 112 ± 3 mV ( vs . Ag/AgCl) at NDSBAC/GCE. The anode peak currents of HQ and CC depend linearly on their respective concentrations. NDSBAC/GCE shows wide linear ranges of 0.5–300.0 μM for both HQ and CC. The detection limits are 0.11 μM for HQ and 0.09 μM for CC. The recoveries of HQ and CC are 92.1%–109.5% and 98.0%–104.3%, respectively, in the testing of the spiked lake water.

Hanqiang Zhang,Yihong Huang,Shirong Hu,Qitong Huang,Chan Wei,Wuxiang Zhang,Weize Yang,Peihui Dong,Aiyou Hao

In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets-carbon nanotube (CNNS-CNT) composite was synthesized via hydrothermal reaction of 2D CNNS and 1D CNT-COOH by π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions. This CNNS-CNT composite was characterized by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and fourier-transform infrared. In addition, the CNNS-CNT composite displayed excellent conductivity comparing with CNNS and CNT-COOH monomer. This composite was applied for electrochemical simultaneous determination of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) with good sensitivity, wide linear range and low detection limit. In addition, this CNNS-CNT composite modified electrode was also applied to detect practical samples with satisfactory results.

A novel substitution -sensing for hydroquinone and catechol based on a poly(3-aminophenylboronic acid)/MWCNTs modified electrode

Min Zhong,Yunlong Dai,Limei Fan,Xiaojing Lu,Xianwen Kan

A facile electrochemical sensor for hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) determination was successfully fabricated by the modification of poly(3-aminophenylboronic acid) (pAPBA) film and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on a glassy carbon electrode (pAPBA/MWCNTs/GCE). The prepared sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscope and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, differential pulse voltammetry was employed to quantify individual HQ and CC within the concentration range of 5.0 × 10−7–4.0 × 10−5 mol L−1 and 7.0 × 10−6–1.0 × 10−4 mol L−1, respectively. Based on the covalent binding between the boronic acid groups of pAPBA film and the cis-diol-containing molecule, a novel substitution-sensing strategy was proposed for the highly sensitive determination of CC. With the addition of CC into HQ solution, covalent interaction between CC and APBA occurred and the HQ was displaced by CC, resulting in a decrease of HQ oxidation peak current and the increase of the CC oxidation peak current. The summation of both current changes (Δ|IHQ| + Δ|ICC|) were combined for CC sensitive detection in a concentration range of 4.0 × 10−8–1.7 × 10−5 mol L−1 with a limit of detection of 4.3 × 10−9 mol L−1. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of CC in spiked water samples.

A chemometrics-assisted excitation–emission matrix fluorescence method for simultaneous determination of arbutin and hydroquinone in cosmetic products

Li Zhu,Hai-Long Wu,Li-Xia Xie,Huan Fang,Shou-Xia Xiang,Yong Hu,Zhi Liu,Tong Wang,Ru-Qin Yu

A fast analytical method that combines second-order calibration based on alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm with excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence technique is proposed to mathematically separate the overlapped spectra and simultaneously quantify arbutin (AR) and hydroquinone (HQ) in cosmetic products. This method inherits the merit of high sensitivity of traditional fluorescence and fully realizes the “second-order advantage”. For AR and HQ, the calibration ranges are 40.00–400.00 and 20.00–200.00 ng mL−1, respectively. The limits of detection for both analytes are in the range of 1.51–4.01 ng mL−1. The proposed method could be applied to diluted samples of different cosmetic products with satisfactory results. The actual concentrations of AR in the tested cosmetic products are found to be in the allowable concentration range (7%); while, the prohibited skin whitening agent HQ is detected in lotion. The contents of AR and HQ in the tested cosmetic products obtained by the proposed method are also in accordance with those of the validated high-performance liquid chromatographic method. These satisfactory results indicate that the proposed method has the potential to accurately quantify AR and HQ in complex matrices containing uncalibrated interferents, and shows promise as a reliable tool for quality monitoring of cosmetic products.

Synthesis of dual function Fe3O4@MnO2@HKUST-1 magnetic micromotors for efficient colorimetric detection and degradation of hydroquinone

Hui Luo,Yang Han,Kaiyuan Hu,Jia Li,Dickon H. L. Ng,Xiaodi Ma,Kairui Luan,Mingkang Yang

Herein, we demonstrate a novel Fe3O4@MnO2@HKUST-1 magnetic micromotor with excellent peroxidase-like activity for highly efficient colorimetric detection and degradation of hydroquinone. Such micromotors had unique flower-like morphology with highly exposed active sites. The resulting MnO2-based micromotor was propelled by O2 bubbles generated from hydrogen peroxide fuel catalyzed by MnO2, and the velocity could be adjusted by the H2O2 fuel concentration. The self-propelled motion of the Fe3O4@MnO2@HKUST-1 could effectively increase the collision probability between active sites and pollutant molecules, and thus, enhanced the sensitivity of the colorimetric detection as well as the degradation efficiency. These excellent results confirm that this Fe3O4@MnO2@HKUST-1 micromotor has good prospects for future use in water treatment applications.

TiO2 supported Pd nanoclusters with surface defects toward highly efficient hydrogenation of quinone to hydroquinone under mild conditions

Xiaoda Niu,Shuang Liu,Yong Men,Lin Li,Liangmin Xiong,Kailiang Guo,Junzhe Xu,Kunfeng Zhao,Ya Li,Wei An,Jinguo Wang

Hydrogenation of quinones is an efficient way to produce hydroquinone compounds. Typically, 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone (TMHQ), the key intermediate of vitamin E, can be produced via hydrogenation of 2,3,5-trimethylbenzoquinone (TMBQ). In order to effectively obtain the target products, the exploration of efficient heterogeneous catalysts is highly desired. In this study, supported Pd nanocluster catalysts (PdN/TiVo) were designed through a deposition-precipitation method over TiO 2 support with surface defects (TiVo) to achieve high atomic utilization efficiency of the noble metal Pd under mild reaction conditions. The characterization showed that oxygen vacancies generated by H 2 reduction on the support TiO 2 acted as specific sites to promote the formation of the coupled eutectic growth structure composed of the active metal Pd and TiVo. The active metal Pd which not only exhibited high dispersion but also formed electron-rich active sites can activate H 2 while the Ti 3+ atoms at oxygen vacancy sites can adsorb the oxygen species from TMBQ, thereby a synergistic catalytic effect can be shown to enhance the adsorption and hydrogenation of C=O bonds. Thus PdN/TiVo revealed a high yield of TMHQ of 96% and TOF of 276 min −1 under a considerably wild condition (45°C, 0.2 MPa, 60 min). By comparison, state-of-the-art carbon based Pd catalysts (PdN/C) acquired only 29% yield and 41 min −1 TOF in the same way. The simultaneous engineering of Pd catalyst and oxygen vacancies on TiO 2 offers a new strategy to develop efficient heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation of quinones.

Sensitive simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone based on iron and nitrogen doped carbon nanonets derived from MOFs

Qi Wang,Jinjin Zhang,Nannan Dou,Jianying Qu

In this work, a leaf-shaped iron-doped metal–organic framework (MOF) was synthesized in the aqueous phase and marked as Fe-L-ZIF-8. Fe-L-ZIF-8 was carbonized at high temperature under nitrogen atmosphere to obtain an iron and nitrogen doped carbon nanonets with unique three-dimensional network structure (Fe, N -CNs), which was characterized with XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR and electrochemical impedance spectra. And a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed through modifying Fe, N -CNs on the surface of a glassy carbon substrate for simultaneous detection of catechol and hydroquinone. Under optimal conditions, both the linear ranges for detecting CC and HQ are 0.50–80.00 μM and the limits of detection are both 0.17 μM. In addition, the proposed sensor exhibited a wider linear range with good stability, reproducibility and selectivity, which has potential applications.

Construction of a CuO2@PDA Nanozyme with Switchable Dual Enzyme-Mimic Activities for Colorimetric Sensing of Catechol and Hydroquinone

Haiyan Zhang,Yitong Chen,Yanhui Wei,Xiaokang Zhang,Hongchao Ma

The development of metal-based redox nanozymes represents a new frontier in pollutant sensing. In this field, designing highly active nanozymes and precisely regulating their enzymatic activity are key challenges. In this work, we report the construction of a copper peroxide@polydopamine (CuO2@PDA) nanozyme with dual enzyme-like activity, mimicking the active centers of laccase and peroxidase. Here, CuO2 acts as the catalytic center, while PDA serves as a carrier to prevent CuO2 aggregation and promotes conversion of CuII/CuI active sites via the reduction effect of its surface catechol groups to complete the catalytic cycle. As expected, the obtained CuO2@PDA nanozyme exhibits significant laccase- and peroxidase-mimetic activities. Moreover, its dual enzymatic activity can be systematically switched by adjusting pH and temperature. Specifically, laccase activity dominates near neutral pH, while CuO2 decomposition into Cu ions and H2O2 at acidic pH triggers peroxidase activity. Similarly, CuO2@PDA exhibits temperature-dependent dual enzymatic activity with peroxidase activity prevailing at low temperatures and laccase activity at high temperatures. According to enzymatic performance and XPS results, a possible catalytic mechanism of the dual enzymatic activity of CuO2@PDA has been proposed. Then, based on the pH-dependent dual enzymatic activity of CuO2@PDA, we constructed a detection system for the isomers of organic pollutants, catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The laccase-like activity of CuO2@PDA enables direct oxidation of CC into yellow o-benzoquinone, while HQ discolors the preoxidized substrate generated via the peroxidase-like activity of CuO2@PDA. Moreover, selective sensing for CC and HQ with high sensitivity was achieved in real water samples. This approach can guide the design of nanozymes with multienzymatic activity and unveil their potential uses in environmental pollutant discrimination.
