Organic acid-assisted design of zirconium-lignocellulose hybrid for highly efficient upgrading levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone

Yao Liu,Feiyi Chen,Junhua Zhang,Liang He,Lincai Peng

Acid treatment is the key to improve the physicochemical properties of metal-lignocellulosic hybrid, thus contributing to the catalytic performance for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols. Herein, a series of organic acids were introduced to assist the design of Zr- Pennisetum sinese hybrid. Comprehensive studies demonstrated the dramatic changes of specific surface and acid/base sites of the prepared hybrid. Remarkably, formic acid-assisted Zr@ PS -FA possessed the largest surface area and enhanced interaction effects between acids (Lewis acid and Brønsted acid) and Lewis base sites, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity for CTH of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone with a high yield of 95.6% in isopropanol under moderate reaction conditions (180 °C and 1.5 h). Zr@ PS -FA also showed remarkable cycle stability, and it could be consecutively used at least six runs without a significant loss in catalytic activity. More gratifyingly, Zr@ PS -FA displayed a superior universality for CTH of various carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols, demonstrating great potential for upgrading biomass-derived aldehydes/ketones.

Enhanced Interface Properties and Stability of Lignocellulose Nanocrystals Stabilized Pickering Emulsions: The Leading Role of Tannic Acid

Hongjie Dai,Yuan Chen,Shumin Zhang,Xin Feng,Bo Cui,Liang Ma,Yuhao Zhang

Cellulose and tannin are both abundant and biodegradable biopolymers, whose integrations show great potential in the food field due to their nutritional properties and biological activity. Here, lignocellulose nanocrystals (LCNC) isolated from pineapple peel were complexed with tannic acid (TA) through hydrogen-bonding interaction to prepare the LCNC/TA complex for stabilizing Pickering emulsions. Introducing TA decreased the interfacial tension (23.8–20.1 mN/m) and water contact angle (83.2–56.2°) with the LCNC/TA ratio ranging from 1:0 to 1:0.8 (w/w) but increased the size of the LCNC/TA complex. The droplet size of emulsions decreased from 115.0 to 51.3 μm accompanied by improved rheological properties. The emulsions stabilized by the LCNC/TA complex exhibited higher storage and environmental stabilities than those stabilized by LCNC alone. Interestingly, TA effectively promoted the interfacial adsorption of LCNC to build a stronger interfacial layer. The emulsion network structure was enhanced due to the formation of hydrogen-bonding interaction between LCNC and TA in the continuous phase.

Sustainable structural polysaccharides conversion: How does DES pretreatment affect cellulase adsorption, thereby improving enzymatic digestion of lignocellulose?

Min Zhou,Yuxuan Feng,Haidong Li,Xingjun Tian

Biomass conversion aims at degrading the structural polysaccharides of lignocellulose into reducing sugars. Pretreatment is necessary to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocellulose. The DES La/ChCl in this paper was selected based on our previous study. To examine cellulase adsorption of lignocellulose after DES pretreatment, sorghum straw was pretreated with DES under different condition. The adsorption improvement of cellulase on lignocellulose after DES pretreatment has positive impact on reducing sugar production of biomass. After DES pretreatment, 1. pore corrosion caused the upward trend of pore radius and the downward trend of SSA. 2. the hydrogen bounding force of pretreated sorghum straw and MCC decreased, the hydrogen bounding force of pretreated lignin increased. 3. although the unsaturation of pretreated lignin increased, DES pretreatment is helpful for the removal of lignin. 4. The decrease in the hydrophobicity of sorghum straw make it easier to disperse. 5. the Zeta potential of pretreated sorghum straw shifted towards the positively charged region, while pretreated lignin shifted towards the negatively charged region. 6. different adsorption behaviors were observed in specific components of cellulase mixtures (BGs, CBHs, EGs and xlylanase). These results revealing the mechanism of enzyme adsorption are conductive for understanding the role of pretreatment in biomass conversion.

Effects of humic acid modified oyster shell addition on lignocellulose degradation and nitrogen transformation during digestate composting

Mingyi Lu,Xiaoshuang Shi,Quan Feng,Xu Li,Shujuan Lian,Mengdan Zhang,Rongbo Guo

The aim of this work was to investigate the performance of a novel humic acid modified oyster shell (MOS) bulking agent on the digestate composting. MOS was prepared by immobilizing humic acid onto oyster shell using solid phase grafting method, and then applied to the composting process. Results showed more obvious degradation of lignocellulose was observed in the MOS treatment, which was probably due to the high relative abundance of Actinobacteria . Moreover, the addition of MOS could significantly preserve NH 4 + and reduce the NO 3 − generation with the decreasing abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea. Besides, adding MOS reduced the N 2 O emission by 59.63% compared with the control. After composting, excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the humification degree as well as compost maturity was enhanced with MOS added.

Synergistic effect of ionic liquid and surfactant for enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose by Paenibacillus sp. LLZ1 cellulase

Wei Yang,Huan Fan,Min Zhou,Zheng Zhou,Lishi Yan,Xin Ju,Liangzhi Li

Stable cellulases are critical for in situ hydrolysis of ionic liquid-pretreated lignocellulose , and surfactants were reported to improve the stability of cellulase in practical circumstances. In this study, synergistic effect of Tween-80 and [Emim]OAc was first identified to enhance the hydrolysis of lignocellulose by Paenibacillus sp. LLZ1 cellulase, proving the effectiveness of surfactants in in situ hydrolysis. Protein fluorescence and near-UV circular dichroism spectroscopy analyses illustrated that ionic liquids might move local residues and alter global tertiary structure of cellulase, leading to higher instability. The addition of Tween-80 might turn the microenvironment of cellulase residues more hydrophilic and reduce the contact of protein with deactivation factors. The synergistic system was further applied in the in situ hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose and bagasse cellulose by Paenibacillus cellulase. The enzymatic hydrolysis rate of microcrystalline cellulose was enhanced by 2.5-fold and the final conversion was improved by 45%. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated the substrate solubilizing effect during reaction by monitoring the morphological changes of lignocellulosic substrates . This study highlighted the potential of applying synergistic reaction system in in situ enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose, and revealed the inherent mechanism initially.

Disassembly of lignocellulose into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin for preparation of porous carbon materials with enhanced performances

Siji Chen,Yuhan Xia,Bolun Zhang,Huan Chen,Guang Chen,Shanshan Tang

Lignocellulose is the primary component of many biomasses, including corn straw. Herein, lignocellulose in corn straw was disassembled into the individual polymers, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin via a mild and facile method. Subsequently, three porous carbon materials were prepared by carbonization and chemical activation of cellulose (PCCC), hemicellulose (PCHC), and lignin (PCLC). The three materials showed higher specific surface areas (2565.7, 2996.1, and 2590.3 m 2 g −1 ) and higher porosities (1.4261, 1.5876, and 1.2406 cm 3 g −1 ) than that of PCCS, a porous carbon material derived from raw corn straw (1993 m 2 g −1 and 1.19 cm 3 g −1 ). Of note, PCCC and PCHC exhibited higher adsorption (1025.5 and 950.1 mg g −1 ) of brilliant green (BG), than PCCS (876.7 mg g −1 ). Besides, the BG adsorption capacities of the designed materials were higher than that of most adsorbents, and 2–2.5 times higher than that of graphite oxide (416.7 mg g −1 ). These study results indicate that the disassembly of lignocellulosic biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin is an effective strategy for preparing various porous carbon materials with enhanced performances.

Mild One-Pot Lignocellulose Fractionation Based on Acid-Catalyzed Biphasic Water/Phenol System to Enhance Components’ Processability

Guanhua Wang,Shuang Qi,Yue Xia,Ashak Mahmud Parvez,Chuanling Si,Yonghao Ni

Effective fractionation and utilization of the three main components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) in lignocellulosic biomass give a significant opportunity for commercial operation of a lignocellulosic biorefinery. Herein, we proposed a one-pot method for lignocellulosic biomass (poplar) fractionation by acidic water/phenol pretreatment at mild temperature (120 °C). By this approach, three phases were obtained: water phase containing hemicellulose-derived sugars, phenol phase containing lignin, and cellulose-enriched solid phase. Up to 90% of original lignin was removed with over 96% original cellulose retained in the solid under the optimized conditions (3.5% acid based on biomass weight, 40% phenol content in water/phenol system, 120 °C, and 1 h). Additionally, 77% of original xylan was recovered from the water phase in the form of xylose, while negligible amounts of byproducts (e.g., furfural) formed due to the mild conditions. The pretreated substrate was enzymatically hydrolyzed to glucose, whose digestibility was 2–3 times higher than those obtained using ethanol and dioxane. The lignin, together with the phenol solvent without further separation, was used to prepare lignin-based phenolic foam with satisfactory mechanical and thermal insulation properties. The work highlights a mild one-pot acid-catalyzed pretreatment strategy to separate three main components of lignocellulose, with enhanced processability, so that value-added products can be made, thus providing an effective route for a lignocellulosic biorefinery.

Fabrication of Fe3O4-modified lignocellulose composite for microwave absorption via a sol–gel-assisted hot-pressing process

Dang Baokang,Chen Yipeng,Shen Xiaoping,Jin Chunde,Sun Qingfeng,Li Xiurong

An Fe 3 O 4 -modified lignocellulose (FeLC) composite was fabricated via a sol–gel-assisted hot-pressing process and used for microwave-absorbing and structural materials. The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles could be formed in situ at the interface of the lignocellulose (LC) during sol–gel and hot-pressing processing. The obtained FeLC composites exhibited good mechanical and microwave absorption properties. The maximum reflection loss values of the FeLC composite reached − 10.97 dB at 17.04 GHz, and the effective electromagnetic wave absorption reached 90%. Compared with the modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the LC composite, the maximum MOR and MOE values of the FeLC composite were 26.50 ± 1.16 MPa and 3.015 ± 0.25 GPa, respectively, increasing by 30.2% and 62.1%, respectively. Therefore, the properties of the FeLC could be enhanced via sol–gel assisted hot-pressing.

Synthesis of high-density and low-freezing-point jet fuel using lignocellulose-derived isophorone and furanic aldehydes

Jiawei Xie,Lei Zhang,Xiangwen Zhang,Peijuan Han,Junjian Xie,Lun Pan,De-Rong Zou,Song-Hua Liu,Ji-Jun Zou

Biofuels synthesized from lignocellulose-derived platform chemicals are very attractive for sustainable development. Here we reported a new and facile route to synthesize multi-substituted cycloalkanes with a high density and low freezing point using isophorone and furanic aldehydes (furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural), by solvent-free aldol condensation, followed by hydrodeoxygenation. Catalysts were screened and NaOH showed good performance. The reaction conditions including catalyst dosage, isophorone/furanic aldehyde ratio, temperature and solvent were optimized, and finally the yields of 70.0% for isophorone/furfural and 72.8% for isophorone/5-hydroxymethylfurfural were obtained. Pt/HZSM-5 was prepared as the bifunctional catalyst for hydrodeoxygenation of the condensed product. The resultant multi-substituted cyclohexanes derived from isophorone/furfural and isophorone/5-hydroxymethylfurfural have a density of 0.813 g mL−1 and 0.846 g mL−1 respectively and both have a freezing point lower than −75 °C, and are very promising as stand-alone fuels or additives of other biofuels.

Facile Fabrication of a PDMS@Stearic Acid-Kaolin Coating on Lignocellulose Composites with Superhydrophobicity and Flame Retardancy

Zhe Wang,Xiaoping Shen,Temeng Qian,Junjie Wang,Qingfeng Sun,Chunde Jin

The disadvantages such as swelling after absorbing water and flammability restrict the widespread applications of lignocellulose composites (LC). Herein, a facile and effective method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with flame retardancy on LC has been investigated by coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and stearic acid (STA) modified kaolin (KL) particles. The as-prepared coatings on the LC exhibited a good repellency to water (a contact angle = 156°). Owing to the excellent flame retardancy of kaolin particles, the LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL displayed a good flame retardancy during limiting oxygen index and cone calorimeter tests. After the coating treatment, the limiting oxygen index value of the LC increased to 41.0. Cone calorimetry results indicated that the ignition time of the LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL increased by 40 s compared with that of uncoated LC. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and the total heat release (THR) of LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL reduced by 18.7% and 19.2% compared with those of uncoated LC, respectively. This LC coating with improved water repellency and flame retardancy can be considered as a potential alternative to protect the lignocellulose composite. Keywords:lignocellulose composites;kaolin;PDMS;superhydrophobic;flame retardancy

DES-driven sustainable dual valorization of lignocellulose into carbon dots and porous biochar for effective wastewater remediation

Si Hong,Aocheng Wei,Chao Xie,Xiaojun Shen,Jia-Long Wen,Tong-Qi Yuan

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are renowned for their effectiveness in deconstructing lignocellulose and extracting lignin, yet the challenges lie in lignin condensation and the disposal of the DES remnants after pretreatment. To overcome these issues, this work proposed a holistic strategy utilizing deep eutectic solvent (DES)-driven lignocellulose deconstruction to upgrade lignocellulose into nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) and iron-decorated porous carbons, serving as photocatalysts and adsorbents, respectively. These nitrogen-doped CDs via the choline chloride/FeCl 3 DES pretreatment exhibited abundant nitrogen/oxygen functional groups, enhancing photocatalytic activities and facilitating effective charge separation and transfer. The photocatalytic efficiency of the CDs on dyes reached 97 % under acidic conditions primarily, and free radical quenching experiments indicated that singlet oxygen was the dominant oxidant species. Moreover, the adsorption capabilities of Fe-decorated porous carbons for Congo red reached 2432.3 mg·g −1 , surpassing most existing carbon materials. The adsorption mechanism was due to a synergistic effect including physical adsorption, coordination, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and π-π interactions. This study proposed a synergetic conversion of DES and lignocellulose into functional carbon materials for wastewater remediation, which inspired the development of a green and cost-effective biorefinery.
