Bio-based phytic acid modified silica–alumina aerogels with lightweight, low-smoke, and fire-safe insulation performance

Minhang Han,Qianhe Zhai,Kun Wang,Bo Li,Ruixin Hao,Tielin He,Yinghui Tang,Weihua Ji,Chao Ma,Yang Miao

The demand for lightweight and fire-safe thermal insulation materials in civil and industrial applications has been continuously increasing. Silica aerogels are attractive candidates owing to their ultralow density and low thermal conductivity, but their high flammability and insufficient thermal stability limit broader engineering applications. Incorporating inorganic components such as alumina has been considered an effective strategy to enhance skeletal stability, giving rise to silica–alumina aerogels with improved high-temperature resistance. In this work, phytic acid (PA), a naturally occurring phosphorus-rich compound, was employed as both an acid catalyst and modifier to prepare phosphorus-containing silica–alumina aerogels (ASAs/PA) via supercritical drying. The optimized sample (ASAs/PA-2, TEOS/PA = 1:1.5 ×10⁻³) exhibited a low density of 0.0854 g/cm³ and a thermal conductivity of 24.9 mW/m/K. Compared with pure silica aerogels (SA), its peak heat release rate and total heat release were reduced by 82.0 % and 44.1 %, and by 44.4 % and 18.0 % compared with silica–alumina aerogels (ASAs), demonstrating enhanced flame retardancy arising from phosphorus–aluminum combined interactions. Additionally, the total smoke production (TSP) was significantly reduced, with a reduction of over 95 %, confirming the strong smoke-suppression effect of PA. ASAs/PA showed improved stability at 1000 °C, but reduced stability at 800 °C and 1200 °C compared with ASAs, indicating a trade-off between flame retardancy and high-temperature structural stability. These results highlight the potential of PA modified silica-alumina aerogels as lightweight, fire resistant, and sustainable thermal insulation composites for building and engineering applications, while also underscoring the importance of balancing flame retardancy with high temperature structural stability.

Fabrication and performance evaluation of hydrophobic flame-retardant coatings on polyester substrates via phytic acid and siloxane

Wei Li,Tianyu Ruan,Yingting Yin,Jinbo Yao,Xuemin Hu

With the increasing demand for safety and practical performance in textiles, the development of polyester fabrics combining flame retardancy and hydrophobic properties has become an inevitable requirement for industry advancement. This study employed an in-situ cross-linking composite process for dual-functional flame-retardant and hydrophobic coatings. A flame-retardant base coating was constructed on polyester surfaces via blending and crosslinking of phytate‑zinc and siloxane-modified waterborne polyurethane. Subsequently, the flame-retardant layer catalyzed the hydrolysis and condensation of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane on the fabric surface, thereby forming a hydrophobic coating and yielding a polyester material with both hydrophobic and flame-retardant properties. The limiting oxygen index of the modified polyester fabric increased from 19.5 % to 27.2 %. It couldn't be ignited in combustion tests and exhibited no melting droplets. In the cone calorimeter test, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke release (TSP) decreased by 43 %, 37.8 %, and 35.3 %, respectively. Moreover, the modified polyester fabric exhibited a static water contact angle of up to 149.4°, demonstrating self-cleaning ability, abrasion resistance, and washing durability. This work provides a facile and accessible strategy for the preparation of multifunctional textiles.

Green modification of graphene oxide with phytic acid and its application in anticorrosive water-borne epoxy coatings

Xingnan Zhou,Haowei Huang,Rui Zhu,Renjie Chen,Xinxin Sheng,Delong Xie,Yi Mei

To develop a water-borne epoxy (WEP) nanocomposite coating containing graphene oxide (GO) nanomaterials with excellent anti-corrosion property, natural and nontoxic phytic acid (PA) molecules were used to functionalize GO for improving the compatibility between GO and WEP coating. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy indicated successful decoration of PA molecules onto the surface of GO nanomaterials. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the dispersion performance of GO in WEP was significantly enhanced owing to PA modification. The results obtained from long-term electrochemical measurements and salt spray test confirmed that addition of well-dispersed PA-GO nanomaterials could remarkably enhance the barrier and corrosion protection capability of the WEP coatings.

Preparation and Application of a Urea–Formaldehyde-Blended Guanidinium Azole–Phytic Acid–Copper Flame-Retardant Resin Coating

Xulan Lu,An Wei,Shunxiang Wang,Yongjing Zou,Yunhao Lu,Lixian Sun,Cuili Xiang

In this study, environmentally friendly flame retardants capable of efficient flame retardancy at low concentrations in wood were developed. Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin and guanidinium azole (GZ)-phytate (PA)-copper hydroxide (Cu(OH) 2 ) flame-retardant resin coating blends were prepared using urea, formaldehyde, 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (GZ), phytanic acid (PA), and copper hydroxide (Cu(OH) 2 ). Employing dioctyl phthalate as the plasticizer and tannic acid as the curing agent, a three-stage reaction was performed to obtain the desired UF-GZ/PA/Cu as a bio-based flame retardant. Thermal evaluations demonstrated that UF-GZ/PA/Cu lost 5% of its mass through decomposition at a temperature of 195.5 ± 2.1 °C, with its maximum decomposition rate being observed at 300.6 ± 1.5 °C, and 29.8 ± 2.5 wt.% of dense residual charcoal being obtained at 800 °C. When applied as a flame retardant coating on wood, the prepared UF-GZ/PA/Cu exhibited excellent flame-retardant properties, forming a continuous dense charcoal residual layer, with a limiting oxygen index of 32.0%, and passing the UL-94 V-0 test. In addition, the heat release rate and total heat release rate of the flame retardant were determined to be reduced by 87.7 and 83.66%, respectively. Overall, this study provides a green and effective method for the preparation of flame-retardant wood.

Phytic acid-assisted phase-controlled synthesis of nickel phosphides for highly selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural

Weichen Wang,Hongke Zhang,Fangyuan Zhou,Yidan Wang,Zhiyu Xiang,Wanbin Zhu,Hongliang Wang

Developing cost-effective and highly active catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of furfural to target products is significant yet remains a substantial conundrum in the chemical industry. Herein, we present a phytic acid-assisting pyrolysis strategy to phase-controlled synthesis of a series of nickel phosphides catalysts (Ni 3 P/mSiO 2 , Ni 12 P 5 /mSiO 2 and Ni 2 P/mSiO 2 ), which exhibited phase-dependent catalytic performance in furfural hydrogenation. Ni 12 P 5 /mSiO 2 achieved the highest yield (97.3 %) of cyclopentanone under 1 MPa H 2 at 150 °C, and Ni 3 P/mSiO 2 could further hydrogenate cyclopentanone to a 60.8 % yield of cyclopentanol when the H 2 pressure increased to 2 MPa. Meanwhile, Ni 2 P/mSiO 2 demonstrated temperature-controlled selectivity for switching between furfuryl alcohol and cyclopentanone. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations elucidated that the differences in catalytic performance were primarily attributed to the hydrogenation ability and acidity of catalysts as well as furfural adsorption configuration, which were determined by the tunable crystal phases of nickel phosphides. This work paves the promising avenue for the rational design of metal phosphide catalysts and harnessing their considerable potential for biomass conversion.

Self-adhesive, ionic conductive, environmentally tolerant, and antibacterial phytic acid-reinforced zwitterionic hydrogels as flexible sensor applications

Zhenlin Zuo,Lei Song,Longxing Niu,Rong Wang

Ionic conductive hydrogels have attracted tremendous research interest for their intrinsic characteristics in the field of flexible sensors. However, the combination of multifunctionalities of high mechanical strength, satisfactory self-adhesiveness, ionic conductivity, anti-freezing, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility remains a great challenge for the development of ionic conductive hydrogels. In this study, a novel ionic conductive hydrogel was developed by introducing highly conductive phytic acid (PA) to poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA). PA molecules, as non-covalent crosslinkers and electrolytes in the polySBMA network, significantly improved the mechanical properties, self-adhesion, and electrical properties of the hydrogels. The optimal hydrogel displayed robust mechanical properties (tensile stress: 240.7 kPa), desirable adhesive strength (18.6 kPa to pig skin), and excellent ionic conductivity (2.44 S/m). Simultaneously, the presence of PA confers hydrogels with good antibacterial, anti-freezing properties and long-term environmental stability, and the hydrogels could remain soft even at -40 °C. Moreover, the hydrogel-based sensors showed high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 9.72), wide sensing range (≈400%), good stability, and accuracy for physical and physiological signals (tensile strain, pressure, fluid types and concentrations). This work has not only provided a simple strategy for fabricating tough and recoverable zwitterionic hydrogels, but also demonstrated the multifunctional properties of the zwitterionic hydrogels, which possess a great potential to fulfill flexible device applications.

Flame retardant polyvinyl alcohol film with self-releasing carbon dioxide and ammonia from phytic acid and urea

Hao Wu,Dengwang Lai,Mengyao Nan,Wuyan Cao,Li Liu,Yuejun Liu,Jun Yang

This paper utilizes the reaction of phytic acid (PA) and urea (UM) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution to synthesize flame retardant gasses (CO 2 , NH 3 ) for the preparation of PVA composite films containing flame retardant microbubbles. The flame retardancy of PVA composite films was assessed using methods including limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL 94), and cone calorimetry. The results indicated an increase in the LOI of the PVA composite film containing flame retardant microfoam from 20% to 30% compared with the pure PVA film, and that UL 94 reached VTM-0. Furthermore, its peak exothermic rate and total exothermic amount were reduced by 36.25% and 38.92%, respectively, compared with the pure PVA film. The investigation of the flame-retardant mechanism employed thermogravimetric-infrared (TG-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the CO 2 and NH 3 flame retardant microbubbles within the composite film render it less ignitable at the initial stage, and that the internal UM of the composite film continues to decompose, releasing CO 2 and NH 3 upon heating. In addition, the acidic substances decomposed by PA during combustion promote the dehydration, cross-linking, and cyclization of PVA, generating chemical structures such as P  O  C, P  O  P, and PO 4 with enhanced thermal stability. This encourages the formation of a continuous, dense charcoal layer and impedes the transfer of oxygen and heat into the interior.

Preparation of multifunctional flame-retardant and superhydrophobic composite wood by iron ions doped phytic acid-based nanosheets

Longchao Ma,Tao Zhang,Yihan Zhao,Tiancheng Yuan,Xinzhou Wang,Yanjun Li

The inherent moisture absorption and flammability of wood can diminish its practical application value. In this research, a phytic acid-based flame retardant (PM) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method . Iron ions-doped phytic acid-based nanosheets (PM-Fe 3+ ) deposited on wood surface by vacuum impregnation. Subsequently, the wood was hydrophobically modified with octadecylamine (OA), resulting in the successful fabrication of superhydrophobic and flame-retardant composite wood (PM-Fe 3+ /OA/wood). The influence of various coating components on the wettability , heat, and flame retardancy properties of composite wood was examined through water contact angle (WCA), vertical burning tests (UL-94), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and a cone calorimetry test. The results indicated that the WCA of PM-Fe 3+ /OA/wood was 154.9°. The composite wood possessed exceptional contamination resistance and self-cleaning properties due to its superhydrophobic surface. Furthermore, due to the dry surface of PM-Fe 3+ /OA/wood, it exhibited superior resistance to mold in comparison to natural wood. The combustion test results indicated that PM-Fe 3+ /OA wood exhibited an extremely short time to self-extinguish, achieving V-0 rating. It had a LOI value of 38.6%. Additionally, in the cone calorimetry test, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of composite wood were reduced by 56.6% and 52.2%, respectively. In summary, this work provides an attractive strategy for obtaining wood with superhydrophobic and flame-retardant properties, which enhances its practical application value.

Phytic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan assisted multifunctional zwitterionic hydrogel for temperature perception, human movements and electromyogram signals monitoring

Li Zhao,Yunchun Li,Jinyu Wang,Xubing Sun,Yuan Peng,Xianyao Feng,Jiangrui Zhao,Jinwei Zhang,Yang He,Xuchu Shi,Liyuan Zhang,Yaohui You

Conductive hydrogels have garnered tremendous focus owing to their potential applications in flexible electronics. However, conventional conductive hydrogels often face limitations such as freezing at low temperatures, dehydration in dry environments, lack of antibacterial activity, and poor mechanical stability, which significantly restrict their practical applications in flexible electronics. To address these challenges, a multifunctional zwitterionic conductive hydrogel was developed by proportionally integrating phytic acid (PA), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) and acrylamide. The acquired hydrogel network was constructed by hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction. The incorporation of CMCS made the hydrogel with higher mechanical property. The introduction of PA imparted the hydrogel good anti-freezing, water retention, antibacterial and ionic conductivity characteristics. Additionally, the hydrogel also exhibited good adhesion effect (maximum adhesion strength of 17.6 kPa to pig skin) and self-healing performance (stress healing efficiency of 82%) at room and low temperatures. The prepared multifunctional hydrogel not only demonstrated thermal response performance, but also could be designed as flexible sensor for monitoring human actions and assembled as an electrode for detecting the electromyogram signals of the human body. This work provides a strategy to design a functional-integrated hydrogel that is anticipated to serve as a flexible electronic product for the next generation. Durable high-humidity sensing via stepwise spray-coating of phytic acid/polyethylenimine film on porous carbon electrodes

Yanbo Yao,Guoyi Wu,Yan Shi,Tao Liu,Heming Wu

Stepwise-coated PA/PEI film on porous C for stable humidity sensing at 95% RH. • Sensing mechanism elucidated by impedance equivalent circuit modeling. • Real-time airway humidity monitoring demonstrated for a tracheostomy patient. Long-term, reliable, and continuous humidity monitoring in high-humidity environments (> 90% RH) is critical in fields such as healthcare and industrial processing. However, this remains technically challenging for existing humidity sensors. Herein, we present a humidity sensor to address this issue. The sensor is based on a phytic acid/polyethylenimine (PA/PEI) composite, fabricated via a stepwise spray-coating process onto a direct laser writing-carbonized porous carbon interdigitated electrode. This approach allows for the formation of a uniform and durable PA/PEI complex on the porous carbon surface. The strong electrostatic interactions between the components enable this formation, as confirmed by FTIR analysis. Our sensor can operate reliably in the range of 70–95% RH. It exhibits a sensitivity of –491 Ω/%RH at 30 °C (95% RH) and a hysteresis of ∼0.26%, with no performance degradation observed after continuous operation for over one month at 95% RH. The sensing mechanism was elucidated through frequency-dependent impedance analysis and equivalent circuit modeling. It involves proton hopping, ion diffusion, and charge transfer processes. Their relative contributions are modulated by both humidity level and temperature. Furthermore, the sensor was integrated with a 3D-printed cuff and a tracheostomy tube. This allowed us to demonstrate the clinical utility of our sensor for real-time monitoring of the airway humidity in a patient. This work provides a scalable, low-cost sensing platform specifically designed for long-term operation in high-humidity environments. Ultrastretchable, extreme-environment-adaptable, skin-like supramolecular conductive hydrogels based on phytic acid–mediated hydrogen-bonding networks

Jiajie Xu,Jie Lou,Changqing Yang,Zhangyu Zhu,Fenghua You,Kun Wang,Chunyan Hu,Dan Yu,Baojiang Liu

Conductive hydrogels have shown great potential in wearable electronics due to their flexibility, conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, their practical applications are severely limited by insufficient anti-freezing and water-retention capabilities. In this work, a supramolecular conductive hydrogel was fabricated via photo-initiated copolymerization under UV irradiation of phytic acid, acrylamide, and the ionic liquid monomer 2-acryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride. The hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties and environmental adaptability: it achieves an ultrahigh stretchability of up to 5000%, strong adhesion to various substrates including fabrics, maintains high conductivity (>1 S m −1 ) at −20 °C, and retains 82% of its water content after 3 h at 60 °C. As a textile-integrated strain sensor, the hydrogel demonstrates high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 4.52), rapid response (20 ms), and excellent stability, enabling accurate monitoring of human motions such as elbow and knee bending, as well as handwriting, thereby providing reliable motion perception in robotic clothing systems. This study presents a filler-free hydrogel platform that integrates conductivity, environmental tolerance, and sensing performance, offering a promising pathway for next-generation wearable robotic apparel.

One-step hydrothermal co-carbonization of waste paper with phytic acid for efficient removal of Cr(VI)

Yixi Li,Zhuofan Sun,Xingcan Huang,Liulian Huang,Hui Wu,Lihui Chen,He Xiao

The formation of phytic acid decorated waste paper-derived hydrothermal carbon (WPC-P) were achieved. • The introduction of phytic acid enables to improve the oxygen-containing groups and specific surface area of WPC-P. • The phytic acid modified WPC-P exhibited upgraded adsorption activity of Cr(VI). • The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was generated by electrostatic, chelation, and reduction interactions. Biomass-derived hydrothermal carbon has garnered considerable interest as a promising approach for heavy metal wastewater treatment. In this study, hydrothermal carbon derived from waste paper and coupled with phytic acid (WPC-P) was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process as an effective adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal. Characterization results indicated that P and O were dispersed uniformly on the surface of WPC-P. The introduction of phytic acid could greatly increase the specific surface area and number of active functional groups. The results of adsorption tests indicated that WPC-P exhibited highly efficient removal performance for Cr(VI) with maximum uptake of 174.05 mg·g −1 . The adsorption capacity of WPC-P was 10 times higher than that of WPC at 2 h. Analysis of the experimental data using adsorption kinetic and isotherm models revealed that the adsorption process of WPC-P fitted both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model well. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the WPC-P retained about 87% of its initial capacity. The enhanced adsorption performance, ascribed to the introduction of phytic acid, could be attributed to the complexation, electrostatic interactions and reduction reactions induced by active functional groups on WPC-P. This work reported a simple method to prepare carbon adsorbents from biomass waste, which showed great potential for treating chromium-containing wastewater.
