Originating from the severe polysulfide dissolution and notorious polysulfide shuttle, the practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries confront huge challenges in low active material utilization, rapid capacity degradation, short cycling lifespan, and inferior rate capability. Herein, a rationally modified polypropylene (PP) separator with multi-functional nickel hydroxide@carbon nanotube (NiOOH@CNT) coating layer is proposed to overcome these critical obstacles. The conductive and porous CNT networks ensure the rapid electron/ion transport to achieve high reactivation and reutilization of active materials, as well as physically block the polysulfide migration. Meanwhile, the porous NiOOH nanowalls arrays layer with polar surface demonstrates superior chemical absorption ability for anchoring polysulfides, thereby significantly suppressing the shuttle effect. Such elaborately designed separator endows Li-S batteries with high specific capacity, superior capacity retention and remarkable rate capability. This work sheds new light on the multi-functional separators for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Conventional lithium–sulfur batteries often suffer from fatal problems such as high flammability, polysulfide shuttling, and lithium dendrites growth. Here, highly-safe lithium–sulfur batteries based on flame-retardant electrolyte (dimethoxyether/1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether) coupled with functional separator (nanoconductive carbon-coated cellulose nonwoven) to resolve aforementioned bottle-neck issues are demonstrated. It is found that this flame-retardant electrolyte exhibits excellent flame retardancy and low solubility of polysulfide. In addition, Li/Li symmetrical cells using such flame-retardant electrolyte deliver extraordinary long-term cycling stability (less than 10 mV overpotential) for over 2500 h at 1.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, bare sulfur cathode–based lithium–sulfur batteries using this flame retardant electrolyte coupled with nanoconductive carbon-coated cellulose separator can retain 83.6% discharge capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. Under high charge/discharge rate (4 C), lithium–sulfur cells still show high charge/discharge capacity of ≈350 mAh g −1 . Even at an elevated temperature of 60 °C, discharge capacity of 870 mAh g −1 can be retained. More importantly, high-loading bare sulfur cathode (4 mg cm −2 )–based lithium–sulfur batteries can also deliver high charge/discharge capacity over 806 mAh g −1 after 56 cycles. Undoubtedly, the strategy of flame retardant electrolyte coupled with carbon-coated separator enlightens highly safe lithium–sulfur batteries at a wide range of temperature.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are of considerable research interest for their application potentials in high-density energy storage. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is severely plagued by polysulfide (PS) dissolution and serious safety concerns caused by flammable sulfur and polymer separators. Herein, a nonflammable multifunctional separator for efficient suppression of PS dissolution and high-temperature performance of Li-S batteries is reported. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) are electrospun into a multifunctional separator (PAN@APP) for stable and safe Li-S batteries. Owing to the abundant amine groups and phosphate radical in APP, the PAN@APP separator has strong binding interactions with PS, which exerts strong charge repulsion to suppress the transport of negatively charged PS ions and free radicals. Furthermore, refractory APP ensures the stability of the battery at high temperatures. Using the PAN@APP separator, the Li-S battery demonstrates a capacity retention of 83% over 800 cycles. This work provides a robust materials platform for stable and safe Li-S batteries and points to a direction to close the current gap facing the commercialization of high-energy next-generation electrochemical conversion/storage devices.

The shuttling of polysulfides during discharging/charging processes is a major challenge that severely hinders the widespread use of lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs). Here, a group of scaled-up covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) were explored under relatively mild reaction conditions to reduce reaction related interactions. Triazine shows good chemical compatibility with lithium polysulfide though its pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen groups, while hierarchical microporous structures interact physically as a blocking layer. Moreover, the dual chemical/physical functional CTFs act as an ionic sieves owing to their two-dimensional microporous structures that selectively sieve desired lithium ions, while effectively inhibiting soluble polysulfides reaching the lithium anode. As a result, the CTFs coated on commercial separator enhance battery performance, through improved active material utilization, high reversible specific capacity (1249 mA h g −1 at 0.5 C), an ideal rate performance of 802 mA h g −1 at 2 C, good cycling stability with a low capacity fade-rate of 0.052% per cycle over 800 cycles at 1 C, good anti-self-discharge behaviour and enhanced protection of the lithium anode.

Rechargeable lithium–sulfur batteries have emerged as a viable technology for next generation electrochemical energy storage, and the sulfur cathode plays a critical role in determining the device performance. In this study, we prepared functional composites based on polypyrrole-coated MnO2 nanotubes as a highly efficient sulfur host (sulfur mass loading 63.5%). The hollow interior of the MnO2 nanotubes not only allowed for accommodation of volumetric changes of sulfur particles during the cycling process, but also confined the diffusion of lithium polysulfides by physical restriction and chemical adsorption, which minimized the loss of polysulfide species. In addition, the polypyrrole outer layer effectively enhanced the electrical conductivity of the cathode to facilitate ion and electron transport. The as-prepared MnO2-PPy-S composite delivered an initial specific capacity of 1469 mA h g−1 and maintained an extremely stable cycling performance, with a small capacity decay of merely 0.07% per cycle at 0.2C within 500 cycles, a high average coulombic efficiency of 95.7% and an excellent rate capability at 470 mA h g−1 at the current density of 3C.

Both superwettability and structural colours have attracted considerable attention in recent years. In addition, the combination of structural colours and superwettability could endow materials with broader application prospects. The combination provides a new strategy to design novel functional materials, and there are many studies pertaining to these materials that have been reported in recent years. Herein, a polysulfide (PSF) superhydrophobic coating was synthesized successfully. The PSF superhydrophobic coating possesses excellent superhydrophobicity, oleophobicity for diesel and macroscopic structural colour variation when wetted. The colour is changed when the coating is wetted and it returns to its original colour after drying. In addition, the surface presents better reusability and thermostability which satisfies various daily needs. The PSF superhydrophobic coating can be considered as an excellent candidate for designing wetting responsive materials, and it has enormous application potential in the fields of detection, sensing, anti-counterfeiting and security. For the first time, we present a novel and low-cost strategy to fabricate materials with both superhydrophobicity and structural colour, offering significant insights into the practical application of these functional materials.

Environmentally friendly, waterborne polysulfide-based polyurethane (WSPU) films have been successfully synthesized from liquid polysulfide (PSF), polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA). The chemical structures, mechanical and thermal properties of the chemically modified films have been carefully investigated using ATR-IR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). As the PSF content increases from 0 to 20%, after an immersion in deionized water for 96 h, the water absorption decreases from 6.2% to 3.4% and the tensile strength retention increases from 74.3% to 91.7%. The chemical resistance to organic solvents is also improved significantly. The enhanced water and organic solvent resistances of waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) are primarily attributed to the addition of a PSF containing sulfur group. However, the tensile strength and thermal performance are weakened to some extent. This study produces a new composite derived from polysulfide, and its high water and solvent resistance performance could contribute to surface material research.

The sluggish transition and shuttle of polysulfides (LiPS) significantly hinder the application and commercialization of Li-S batteries. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported 10 nm sized iron Hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (FePcF16/CNTs) are prepared using a solid synthesis approach. The well-exposed FePcF16 molecular improve the LiPS capture efficiency and redox kinetics by its central Fe-N4 units and F functional groups. The strong electron withdraw F groups significantly promote the conjugate effect and decrease the steric hindrance during mass migration procedure. Distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis shows that the Fe-N4 units exhibit strong affinity towards LiPS and the F groups further improve the Li+ diffusion rate in Li2S nucleation and oxidation procedure, accomplishing a porous surface on cathode. As a result, the FePcF16/CNTs separator exhibits a high initial capacity of 1136.2 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, outstanding rate capacity of 624.9 mAh g-1 at 5 C and superior long-term stability at 2 C surviving 300 cycles with a low capacity decay of 0.43‰ per cycle.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, possessing substantial capacity, present a promising successor to current lithium-ion batteries, but the “shuttle effect” during cycling and deficient lithium-ion conductivity in Li–S batteries limit their practical applications. One potential remedy to these issues lies in the use of functional binders. In this study, building on the exceptional electrochemical stability of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), we strategically grafted the cationic monomer 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazole with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI–) coordination from the chain of PVDF, thereby engineering the ionomer binder PVDF-g-(1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bis((trifluorompropyl)sulfonyl)imide) (BVIM). Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations affirmed that these cationic polymer branches, possessing a high binding energy with lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), are effective in trapping the LiPSs generated at the cathode. Moreover, while adsorbing LiPSs the TFSI– originally coordinated with the branched chain will be displaced, forming a dynamic small molecule pathway in the cathode that promotes lithium-ion conduction. As a result, Li–S batteries with BVIM binders deliver a persistent reversible capacity of 792.5 mAh g–1 over 250 cycles at a rate of 0.5C. Concurrently, at a high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm–2, a specific capacity of 3.3 mAh cm–2 was maintained after 50 cycles at 0.2C.

With high energy density and low cost, lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries own the potential to be next-generation electrochemical storage/conversion devices. However, their cyclic stability and life span are considerably impaired by polysulfide shuttling and self-discharge. Here, we design a microfiber glass filter-molybdenum disulfide/carbon-titanium nitride (μFGF-MoS 2 /C–TiN) interlayer for suppressing the shuttle of polysulfides and self-discharge of Li–S batteries. TiN in the interlayer molecularly captures high-order polysulfide Li 2 S 8 with an adsorption energy up to −6.48 eV, the largest high-order polysulfide absorption value ever reported. The μFGF-MoS 2 layer mechanically seizes polysulfides with interconnected torturous mesopores by functioning as a molecular sieve . With a sulfur loading of 4.5 mg cm −2 , the Li–S batteries based on μFGF-MoS 2 /C–TiN exhibit remarkable over-1000-cycle stability with an only 0.05% capacity decay per cycle and deliver an initial discharge capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 at 1C. The self-discharge is alleviated with an insignificant 10.3% capacity loss after a 30-day rest.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the notorious lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics result in inferior electrochemical performances, which are the major obstacles to their commercial application. Engineering the surface/interface of the ultrafine polysulfide promotor which can accelerate LiPS conversion and improve sulfur utilization is still challenging. Herein, we propose an effective strategy to synthesize ultrafine heterostructural Nb2O5–NbC homogeneously distributed in a carbon nanofiber matrix. Polystyrene (PS), as the nanocrystallite growth modulator, plays a vital role in suppressing particle agglomeration. The in situ formed heterostructures with a rational interface engineering design can achieve effective LiPS regulation and speed up the redox kinetics, as confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterizations. As expected, the battery containing ultrafine Nb2O5–NbC heterostructures delivers long-term cyclability with a low capacity decay of 0.044% per cycle over 800 cycles at 1.0C. And the decay rate is as low as 0.045% after 250 cycles at 0.5C with a sulfur loading of 4.0 mg cm−2. This work provides a rational way to prepare ultrafine heterostructural polysulfide promotors via engineering the interface design for Li–S batteries.

The practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have severely been hindered by notorious shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics of lithium polysulfide intermediates (LiPSs), which bring about rapid capacity degradation, low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. In this work, 1T-rich MoS 2 nanosheets are in-situ developed onto the conductive porous carbon matrix (1T-rich MoS 2 @PC) as efficient polysulfide promotors for high-performance Li-S batteries. The porous carbon skeleton tightly anchors MoS 2 nanosheets to prevent their reaggregation and ensures accessible electrical channels, and at the same time provides a favorable confined space that promotes the generation of 1T-rich MoS 2 structure. More importantly, the uniformly distributed metallic 1T-rich MoS 2 nanosheets not only affords rich sulfphilic sites and high binding energy for immobilizing LiPSs, but also favors rapid electron transfer and LiPSs conversation kinetics, substantially regulating sulfur chemistry in working cells. Consequently, the Li-S cell assembled with 1T-rich MoS 2 @PC modified separator delivers a remarkable cycling stability with ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.067% over 500 cycles at 1C. Encouragingly, under harsh conditions (high sulfur loading of 4.78 mg cm −2 and low E/S ratio of 8 μL mg −1 ), a favorable electrochemical performance can still be demonstrated. This study highlights the profitable design of 1T-rich MoS 2 /carbon based electrocatalyst for suppressing shuttle effect and promoting catalytic conversation of LiPSs, and has the potential to be applied to in other energy storage systems.
