This work made use of the sewage sludge ash (SSA) to enhance thermo-responsive hydrogel for driving forward-osmosis (FO) process. Results showed that owing to the porous structure and intermolecular interactions between the ionized groups of monomers and the chemical surface of silica , the SSA-based thermo-responsive hydrogel (SSA2.5H) had increased swelling capacity and osmotic pressure , resulting in an average water flux (2.33 LMH) twice as high as the hydrogel without adding SSA (1.18 LMH) during 24 h FO with DI water or different concentrations (2000–8000 ppm) of NaCl as feed solution. More importantly, SSA2.5H can maintain good thermo-responsive dehydration performance in spite of an enhancement to its swelling ability. 93.8% of the adsorbed water can be retrieved from SSA2.5H in water bath of moderate temperature (60 °C) for 10 min and water flux can be recovered to 94.4% of the initial value after 4 times of hydrogel regeneration during FO as draw agent. Therefore, this work showed that SSA was an excellent modifier to enhance the thermo-responsive hydrogel for improving permeation performance in FO and lowering down the actual energy requirement for water recovery and draw agent regeneration.

Abundant lipids-containing sewage sludge are potential inexpensive alternative substrate for biodiesel production. Herein, a novel polyoxometalate, Cs 10 [H 1.8 Ge 3.2 Nb 11 O 39 ], with desirable acid-base bifunctionality, was synthesized. It demonstrated high efficiency in facilitating biodiesel production from sewage sludge, through in-situ esterification/transesterification, resulted in maximum biodiesel yields of 94.4 %. The catalyst exhibited good resistance to free fatty acids and demonstrated high water tolerance, retaining over 60 % yield even at 99 wt% moisture. To predict and optimize biodiesel yield from sewage sludge, this study presents a novel machine learning framework that integrates Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation-based data augmentation with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling, achieving a high coefficient of determination (R 2 = 0.96) and reduced prediction errors. The incorporation of RBF-enhanced data augmentation effectively mitigates model overfitting while improving cost-effectiveness. The influence of each parameter and relative importance of key reaction parameters on biodiesel production was elucidated by SHapley Additive exPlanations and partial dependence analysis. The physicochemical characteristics of the produced biodiesel met the specifications of international standards, indicating its potential to replace diesel fuel. This study not only offers a new approach to advancing sustainable biodiesel production processes with cheap substrates but also provides practical guidance for sewage sludge treatment and upcycling.

The hydrothermal gasification of dewatered sewage sludge converts waste into syngas fuel (gas containing H 2 , CH 4 , CO, and CO 2 ), but the formation of char and tar by a side reaction restricts practical applications. In this study, the formation of char/tar by the hydrothermal gasification of dewatered sewage sludge at 300–400 °C for 5–90 min with a heating rate of 8–50 °C/min is investigated. The results showed that the formation of tar/char reached equilibrium after 30 min, and an increase in the temperature and heating rate reduced the char yield. However, a higher tar yield was achieved at the highest temperature. Experiments on sludge with different moisture contents were also conducted, and the formation of char/tar was inhibited at a higher moisture content. The addition of NaOH and H 2 O 2 can effectively reduce the char and tar yields, respectively. A lumped kinetic model for describing carbon conversion during the hydrothermal gasification of sewage sludge was developed to elucidate the char/tar formation mechanism. The experimental data were used to determine the model parameters, and the fitting results showed that solid–solid conversion from organic matter in sludge was the predominant char/tar formation pathway, with an activation energy of 7.1 kJ/mol. The experiments using the model compounds indicated that humus and protein are the main precursors of char and tar, respectively. This study provides insights for understanding the formation of char/tar from sewage sludge following hydrothermal gasification, which is vital for controlling the formation of char and tar to improve the gasification efficiency.

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of four types of catalysts on the distribution characteristics of 16 polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in bio-oils from the pyrolysis of dry sewage sludge. The pyrolysis experiments of sewage sludge were conducted in a tubular reactor at the high and low temperatures of 850 °C and 450 °C, respectively. CaO, KCl, Na 2 CO 3 , and Fe 2 O 3 were selected as catalysts for the catalyzed pyrolysis. In the non-catalyzed sludge pyrolysis, PAHs concentrations in bio-oil increased with temperature, reaching a maximum value of 15.25 μg/g at 850 °C. This value was 4.5 times higher than PAHs concentration from the non-catalyzed pyrolysis at 450 °C. With the presence of catalysts at 850 °C, an evident reduction of PAHs concentration was observed for all the bio-oil samples. The added catalysts proved to effectively inhibit PAHs formation in bio-oil and reduce the toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) of PAHs in the experiment at high temperature. The lowest observed PAHs concentration in bio-oil was 4.23 μg/g, obtained with the use of KCl catalyst. However, an opposite trend was observed for catalyzed pyrolysis at 450 °C. The added catalysts promoted PAHs formation, up to the concentration of 8.89 μg/g with the use of CaO catalyst. Catalyst loading also influenced PAHs concentration and TEQ, with the lowest output found at 20% loading for all catalysts. Bio-oil yields, mass ratio of 16 PAHs concentrated into bio-oil, the TEQ of 16 PAHs and their subtotal group classified by ring number were separately examined to analyze their effects on fractional distribution of the total PAH amount. Overall, the presence of the selected catalysts was found to have the ability to inhibit PAHs production at higher pyrolysis temperature and to promote PAHs production at lower pyrolysis temperature.

Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ are both highly toxic pollutants and commonly co-exist in some industrial effluents and contaminated waters . In this study, simultaneous removal of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ by a novel sewage sludge-derived biochar immobilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (SSB-nZVI) was systematically investigated. It was well demonstrated that a porous structure was successfully formed on the SSB-nZVI when the starch was used as an additive. A synergistic effect on the adsorption and reduction over the SSB-nZVI was achieved, resulting in nearly 90 and 82% of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ removal within 30 min, respectively. Cr 6+ was reduced prior to Pb 2+ . A low pH could accelerate the corrosion of nZVI as well as phosphate leaching. When Malachite green was added as a coexisting organic pollutant, its effective removal was found due to the formation of a Fenton-like system. The SSB-nZVI could be run consecutively three times with a relatively satisfactory performance. Most of Cr 6+ was converted into Cr 2 O 3 and Cr(OH) 3 on the SSB-nZVI surface, whereas most of Pb 2+ species existed as Pb(OH) 2 (or PbO). A possible reaction mechanism on the SSB-nZVI involved the adsorption, reduction and precipitation of both Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ over the particles. Present study sheds light on the insight of the fate and transport of Cr 6+ and Pb 2+ in aquatic environment, as well provides helpful guide for the remediation of coexistence of pollutants in real applications.

Addressing the challenges associated with phosphorus and arsenic coexistence is not only a scientific necessity but also a practical imperative for the growing importance of sustainable sewage sludge management. This study investigates the speciation and crystallization transformations of phosphorus and arsenic in sewage sludge under Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments with pH ranging from 2.5 to 8.5. Arsenic and phosphorus, both belonging to the same group of the periodic table, exhibit dynamic interactions during Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments. Results reveal that hydrochar yield decreases with lower pH, while the proportion of arsenic(V) in hydrochar decreases with increasing calcium ion concentration. Scanning electron microscopy shows that fibrous and needle-like structures on hydrochar surfaces enhance the adsorption and enrichment of dissolved phosphorus and arsenate, forming vivianite-P and vivianite-like mineral phases. Notably, the crystallization of scorodite (FeAsO 4 ·2H 2 O) facilitates the immobilization of As(III) in near-neutral environments. These findings deepen our understanding of the synergistic morphological processes and crystallization transformations of arsenic and phosphorus during Fe(III)-catalyzed hydrothermal treatments, offering significant implications for P-rich biochar fertilization and application.

The limited electron transfer efficiency and poor stability of microorganisms are challenges in traditional bioelectrocatalytic food waste treatment. Herein, carbon dots (CDs) possess excellent biocompatibility and electrochemical properties. When combined with bioelectrocatalysis, CDs can regulate microbial community structure and enhance electron exchange capacity. The results demonstrated that compared with the control group (28.1 mL/g-VS/d), the CDs at a dosage of 0.50 g/g VS could increase CH 4 production by a factor of 7.8. CDs not only increase CH 4 production but also improve the digestate’s stability, making it suitable for use as bio-fertilizer. Moreover, a significantly high Methanobacterium richness (11.6 %) signified an intensified utilization of hydrogen and formic acid pathways in CH 4 production. Particularly, the biocompatible CDs could be absorbed by microorganisms, forming an environmental network that was more conducive to electron transfer with unabsorbed CDs and accelerating interspecies electron transfer. This work provides mechanistic insights into boosting CH 4 production in AD.

An advanced dual pH- and temperature-sensitive hydrogel (NASH2.5) was optimally synthesized through modification of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) hydrogel with introducing 5 mol% acrylic acid (AA) and 2.5 wt% sewage sludge ash (SSA). The swelling kinetic results showed that NASH2.5 exhibited both high equilibrium swelling ratio and swelling rate, which was attributed to the higher porous structure as shown in scanning electron microscope, and the more hydrogen bonding formed inside of the hydrogel as investigated in Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. In addition, its curve was better fitted to the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the water absorption process was dominated by chemisorption through forming the hydrogen bonding among the water molecules and carboxyl/silanol groups of the hydrogel. Compared with the pure NIPAM hydrogel, the water transport mechanism switched from Case I diffusion to Case II diffusion by introduction of AA and further SSA. Furthermore, through the results of the deswelling kinetics in pH value change (from 9 to 4 and 2, respectively), temperature value change (from 25 to 40, 50, and 60°C, respectively), and dual pH and temperature values changes, NASH2.5 not only presented a high pH sensitivity, but also showed high sensitive to temperature by achieving high water recovery ratio in rapid dehydrated rate. Therefore, the dual stimuli-sensitive hydrogel with the simultaneously high performance of swelling and deswelling would provide a suitable alternative for specific applications such as pollutant adsorption.

Orange peel waste (OPW) and sewage sludge (SS) valorization for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from anaerobic co-fermentation are attractive and feasible. The highest VFAs reached 11996.3 mg COD/L within 10 d at the mass ratio (TS/TS) of 1:1, which was approximately 30-fold of that in sole SS fermentation. The OPW provided plenty of organic substrates and facilitated the fermentation processes by disintegrating SS structure and inhibiting methanogenesis due to the abundant limonene. Also, the OPW feeds reshaped the microbial community and enriched fermentative bacteria, especially those saccharolytic ones ( i.e. Prevotella-7 ). The key genes involved in membrane transport ( i.e. ptsG ), glycolysis ( i.e. pgk ), pyruvate metabolism ( i.e. ace ), and fatty acid biosynthesis ( i.e. accA ), which are associated with VFAs biosynthesis, were up-regulated in OPW/SS reactors. Overall, it was the increase in bioavailable organic matter and functional microorganisms, and the simultaneous enhancement of metabolic activity that improved the efficient VFAs production.

A novel dispersive solid-phase extraction combined with vortex-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplet was developed for the determination of eight benzoylurea insecticides in soil and sewage sludge samples before high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The analytes were first extracted from the soil and sludge samples into acetone under optimized pretreatment conditions. Clean-up of the extract was conducted by dispersive solid-phase extraction using activated carbon as the sorbent. The vortex-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplet procedure was performed by using 1-undecanol with lower density than water as the extraction solvent, and the acetone contained in the solution also acted as dispersive solvent. Under the optimum conditions, the linearity of the method was in the range 2–500 ng/g with correlation coefficients ( r ) of 0.9993–0.9999. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.08–0.56 ng/g. The relative standard deviations varied from 2.16 to 6.26% ( n = 5). The enrichment factors ranged from 104 to 118. The extraction recoveries ranged from 81.05 to 97.82% for all of the analytes. The good performance has demonstrated that the proposed methodology has a strong potential for application in the multiresidue analysis of complex matrices.
