Hydrothermal Growth of Ag-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles on Electrospun Cellulose Nanofibrous Mats for Catechol Detection

Jiapeng Fu,Zengyuan Pang,Jie Yang,Zhanping Yang,Jianhua Cao,Yang Xu,Fenglin Huang,Qufu Wei

We fabricated a novel hierarchical composite mat composed of electrospun cellulose nanofibers decorated with Ag-doped ZnO (Ag-ZnO) nanoparticles and further demonstrated its potential application as the efficient laccase (Lac) biosensor substrate material. The cyclic voltammograms revealed that the Ag-ZnO/cellulose nanofibrous mat provided an excellent microenvironment for Lac immobilization and benefited direct electron transfer of Lac. The fabricated Lac/Ag-ZnO/cellulose/GCE exhibited a highly sensitive detection of catechol with a wide linear range from 0.995 to 811 µM and a low detection limit of 0.205 µM. The results indicated that Ag-ZnO/cellulose nanofibers were the promising nanostructured materials for the construction of different biosensors.

Large-scale fabrication and application of magnetite coated Ag NW-core water-dispersible hybrid nanomaterials

Baoyu Wang,Min Zhang,Weizhen Li,Linlin Wang,Jing Zheng,Wenjun Gan,Jingli Xu

In this work, we report a large scale synthetic procedure that allows attachment of magnetite nanoparticles onto Ag NWs in situ, which was conducted in a triethylene glycol (TREG) solution with iron acetylacetonate and Ag NWs as starting materials. The as-prepared Ag NW/Fe3O4 NP composites are well characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, and VSM techniques. It was found that the mass ratio of iron acetylacetonate to Ag NWs plays a crucial role in controlling the amount of magnetite nanoparticles decorated on the Ag NWs. The resulting Ag NW/Fe3O4 NP composites exhibit superparamagnetic properties at room temperature, and can be well dispersed in aqueous and organic solutions, which is greatly beneficial for their application and functionality. Thus, the as-prepared magnetic silver nanowires show good catalytic activity, using the catalytic reduction of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction. Furthermore, the Ag NW/Fe3O4 NP composites can be functionalized with polydopamine (Pdop), resorcinol–formaldehyde resin (PFR), and SiO2, respectively, in aqueous/ethanol solution. Meanwhile they can also be coated with polyphosphazene (PZS) in organic solution, resulting in a unique nanocable with well-defined core shell structures. Besides, taking Ag NW/Fe3O4@SiO2 as an example, a hollow magnetic silica nanotube can be obtained with the use of Ag NWs as physical templates and a solution of ammonium and H2O2. These can greatly improve the application of the Ag NW/Fe3O4 NP composites. The as-synthesized above nanocomposites have high potential for applications in the fields of polymers, wastewater treatment, sensors, and biomaterials.

The facile preparation of Ag decorated TiO2/ZnO nanotubes and their potent photocatalytic degradation efficiency

Shengzhe Zhao,Zhiqiang Cheng,Lijuan Kang,Mingtang Li,Zhiling Gao

Hollow TiO2 and TiO2/ZnO nanotubes were produced using a simple and novel approach combining electrospinning with an impregnation calcination method. Using a photoreduction method, silver nanoparticles (AgNps) were successfully decorated on the surface of nanotubes. During the synthesis process, the electrospinning procedure provided sacrificial templates for the fabrication of hollow nanotubes by producing PAN nanofibers, which can be immobilized on the TiO2 surface through a soaking method. Later, the composite nanofibers of TiO2/PAN were calcined into pure TiO2 nanotubes after complete combustion of the sacrificial templates. The morphology of the samples was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The structure and components of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Upon blending ZnO into TiO2, a new crystallite ZnTiO3 was formed in addition to the ZnO and TiO2 crystallites, and the ultra-violet light absorption efficiency was detected using UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic properties were evaluated using the degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye. As observed from the results, the Ag/TiO2/ZnO nanotubes could degrade MO efficiently under UV irradiation, which showed excellent photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2. The synthetic mechanism of Ag/TiO2/ZnO nanotubes and the mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity have been proposed.

Antibacterial thermoplastic polyurethane electrospun fiber mats prepared by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-assisted adsorption of Ag nanoparticles

Liu Yu-man,Li Qiang,Liu Huan-huan,Cheng Hui-hui,Yu Jian,Guo Zhao-xia

Antibacterial thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) electrospun fiber mats were prepared by adsorption of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto TPU/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) co-electrospun fiber mats from silver sol. The use of APS can functionalize TPU fibers with amino groups, facilitating the adsorption of Ag NPs. The effects of pH of silver sol and APS content on Ag NP adsorption and antibacterial activity were investigated. Ag NP adsorption was evidenced by TEM, XPS and TGA. Significant Ag NP adsorption occurred at pH = 3−5. The main driving force for Ag NP adsorption is electrostatic interaction between ―NH 3 + of the fibers and ―COO − derived from the ―COOH group capped on the surfaces of Ag NPs. The antibacterial activity of the Ag NP-decorated TPU/APS fiber mats was investigated using both gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Bacillus subtilis . The antibacterial rate increases with increasing APS content up to 5% where the antibacterial rates against both types of bacteria are over 99.9%.

Monodisperse raspberry-like multihollow polymer/Ag nanocomposite microspheres for rapid catalytic degradation of methylene blue

Qiong Tian,Xiaojing Yu,Lifeng Zhang,Demei Yu

Raspberry-like multihollow polymer microspheres were prepared by seeded swelling polymerization and decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) which acted as both reducing and stabilizing agent. Formation mechanism of the raspberry-like multihollow microsphere was discussed on the basis of water absorption of sulfonated groups in the seeded swelling polymerization. Effects of weight ratio of sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate to styrene (NaSS/St) of the seed particles, the concentration of PVP and [Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions on the properties of polymer/Ag nanocomposite microspheres were investigated by microscopic observation, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV–vis absorption spectra , X-ray diffraction patterns and thermogravimetric analysis . The results demonstrated that the raspberry-like multihollow microspheres were successfully fabricated by controlling over the NaSS/St of the seed particles in the seeded swelling polymerization by which the fabrication of hollow structure became simple and convenient. The spherical AgNPs were loaded on the polymer microsphere by in-situ chemical reduction due to the stabilization and reduction of PVP and the attraction between sulfonated groups and [Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions. The raspberry-like multihollow polymer/Ag microspheres showed good catalytic activity and reusability in the degradation of methylene blue in the presence of NaBH 4 .

Colorimetric assay is a powerful tool for detection of tumor markers with the outstanding advantages of visualization and simple analytical instruments. Herein, a simple and fast chromogenic reaction was developed based on Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite synthesized by one-step chemical bath method. And the Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite owned the ability of oxidizing of TMB under the acidic condition due to the hydrolytic action. The nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, the colorimetric immunoassay was constructed by utilizing Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite as molecular labels for carcino embryonie antigen (CEA, UniProt accession number: P06731) detection. The blue color with gradient change was observed with the increasing of CEA concentrations. Under optimal conditions, the variation between absorbance values and CEA levels was linear in the range of 0.2   ng   mL −1 ~ 2.5   ng   mL −1 with the detection limit of 0.03   ng   mL −1 . More importantly, the developed colorimetric immunoassay exhibited good selectivity , repeatability, stability and potential application in the real serum sample detection.

Facile synthesis of bimetallic Ag-Cu nanoparticles for colorimetric detection of mercury ion and catalysis

Shuang Li,Te Wei,Mingyu Tang,Fang Chai,Fengyu Qu,Chungang Wang

Here, we reported on a route to the facile synthesis of bimetallic silver doped copper nanoparticles (Ag-Cu NPs) by AgNO 3 and CuSO 4 in the presence of sodium borohydride and sodium citrate. The present work described the preparation of the Ag-Cu NPs with sodium citrate and the use of them in colorimetric detection of mercury (II) ions. Ag-Cu NPs with an average diameter of 9.0   ±   0.8   nm were prepared via two step reduction at room temperature. The Ag-Cu NPs were thoroughly characterized by using UV–vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The morphology and constitution of the Ag-Cu NPs were characterized by TEM, and the valence state of Ag-Cu NPs was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) result. The synthesized Ag-Cu NPs were yellow in color due to the intense surface plasmon absorption band centered at 406   nm. This high selective sensor allowed a direct quantitative assay of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) with a detection limited of 0.51   nM. The synthesized Ag-Cu NPs also exhibited good catalytic activity in two model reactions, the reduction of the nitrophenols and potassium ferricyanide (III) by sodium borohydride.

Bing Zhang,Xue Wang,Yanling Zhao,Jia Lv,Hongyun Meng,Honghong Chang,Hui Zhang,Wenlong Wei

Visual detection of tumor markers with accuracy and selectivity exhibits significant advantages for cancer early diagnosis due to its low-cost and simple analytical instruments. Herein, a highly photosensitive colorimetric immunoassay for carcino embryonie antigen (CEA, as a model) detection based on Cu 2+ doped Ag-AgI nanocomposite was constructed. First, Cu 2+ doped Ag-AgI nanocomposite (Cu 2+ /Ag-AgI) owned the ability of oxidization of TMB was synthesized by impregnation method, which was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Second, based on sandwich-type immunoassay, the immunocomplex was built on the surface of magnetic bead by utilizing Cu 2+ /Ag-AgI as labels. The blue color of TMB ox was obtained under visible irradiation and ultraviolet spectrum scanning was carried out in ABS buffer solution. Under optimal conditions, the absorbance values increased with the increasing of CEA concentrations in sample with the linearity range of 1.0   pg   mL −1 −5.0   ng   mL −1 . The detection limit was 0.13   pg   mL −1 . More importantly, the developed colorimetric immunoassay exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, stability and possible applications in the real serum sample analysis.

Mussel-inspired coatings on Ag nanoparticle-conjugated carbon nanotubes: bactericidal activity and mammal cell toxicity

Chuanxiong Nie,Chong Cheng,Zihang Peng,Lang Ma,Chao He,Yi Xia,Changsheng Zhao

Silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-based nanohybrids have been proposed as efficient antimicrobial agents because of their robust bactericidal activity. However, the direct exposure of AgNPs poses a threat towards mammalian cells. In this article, we report a facile mussel-inspired approach to introduce functional biopolymer coatings to shield AgNP-loaded oxidized carbon nanotubes (AgNPs@oCNT), as well as to modify the interface properties. Two kinds of dopamine-grafted functional biopolymers, heparin and chitosan, were used to reduce the Ag+ ions pre-absorbed onto the oCNT surface and simultaneously form protective coating layers. Their effects on the bactericidal activity and mammal cell biocompatibility of the AgNPs@oCNT were compared. The TEM, FTIR, and XPS results clearly verified the loading of AgNPs and the coating of functional biopolymer on the oCNT surface. Studies of broth turbidity, bacterial growth kinetics, agar plate counts, and live/dead bacterial staining revealed that the biopolymer-coated nanohybrids exhibited robust bactericidal activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, and were as effective as bare AgNPs@oCNT hybrids. The chitosan-coated samples were particularly effective because of the synergistic effects of chitosan and AgNPs. The shielding effects of the anchored functional biopolymers gave the AgNP-based nanohybrids good compatibility with endothelial cells, especially for the heparin-coated samples.

Optimization of Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor with Ag/Au Multilayer Structure and Fiber-Optic Miniaturization

Lu Mengdi,Liang Yuzhang,Qian Siyu,Li Lixia,Jing Zhenguo,Masson Jean-Francois,Peng Wei

In this paper, we report a novel wavelength interrogation-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) system, in which a film of three Ag layers and three Au layers are alternately deposited on a Kretschmann configuration as sensing element. This multilayer film shows higher sensitivity for refractive index (RI) measurement by comparing with single Au layer structure, which is consistent with its theoretical calculation. A sensitivity range of 2056–5893 nm/RIU can be achieved, which is comparable to RI sensitivities of other wavelength-modulated SPR sensors. Compared with Ag film, this Ag/Au multilayer arrangement offers anti-oxidant protection. This SPR biosensor based on a cost-effective Ag/Au multilayer structure is applicable to the real-time detection of specific interactions and dissociation of low protein concentrations. To extend the application of this highly-sensitive metal film device, we integrated this concept on an optical fiber. The range of RI sensitivities with Ag/Au multilayer was 1847–3309 nm/RIU. This miniaturized Ag/Au multilayer-based fiber optic sensor has a broad application in chemical and biological sensing.

Sensitive determination of capsaicin on Ag/Ag2O nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide modified screen-printed electrode

Yan Wang,Binbin Huang,Wanlin Dai,Jianshan Ye,Bin Xu

Ag/Ag 2 O-loaded poly(sodium4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite (Ag/Ag 2 O-PSS-rGO) with high catalytic activity was synthesized for sensitive determination of capsaicin . The prepared composite was characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained images revealed the good distribution of Ag/Ag 2 O on the PSS-rGO and confirmed the successful synthesis of the nanocomposite . Adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdsSV) and differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPSV) were used to study the electrochemical performance of the prepared sensor, and showed excellent electro-catalytic activity to the redox reaction of capsaicin due to the synergistic effect between Ag/Ag 2 O and PSS-rGO. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of capsaicin was found to be 1.0–60   μM with a detection limit of 0.40   μM (S/N   =   3).

Effect of Electronic Coupling on the Electrocatalytic Performance of Ag-MFe2O4 (M = Co, Mn) Nanocomposites

Yingjie Chen,Shiben Liu,Zhihao Shi,Jianhua Yu,Hongzhou Dong,Yong Qin,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

Ag-MFe2O4 (M = Co, Mn) nanocomposites were synthesized and loaded onto carbon supports. As-prepared Ag-MFe2O4/C demonstrated higher catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) than Ag+MFe2O4/C. The direct coupling and electron transfer between Ag and MFe2O4 in nanocomposites were proposed to enhance their catalytic activities. The Koutecky-Levich plots confirmed a direct four-electron reaction pathway for the ORR on Ag-MFe2O4/C. Furthermore, Ag-MFe2O4/C showed superior catalytic activities and excellent stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus, Ag-MFe2O4/C nanoparticle are potential non-Pt candidates with bi-functional catalytic activity for ORR and OER.
