BACKGROUND Membrane fouling is a main obstacle hindering wider application of membrane technologies, and can cause a decline in flux and increased energy consumption, and more frequent chemical or membrane replacement can increase the operating costs. Membrane fouling is mainly governed by organic fouling and biofouling. In recent years, the development of new materials has provided new methods and thoughts for the research and development of antifouling and antibacterial membranes. RESULTS In this study, to obtain both a highly hydrophilic, antifouling and antibacterial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane, in situ formed silver (Ag) nanoparticles were immobilized with silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles, and then chemically bound onto a PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) membrane surface. The surface modification processes were achieved through a remarkably facile and effective dip-coating method. The impacts of Ag/SiO 2 nanocomposites on membrane performance were investigated when applied in membrane filtration processes simultaneously. This membrane showed higher hydrophilicity and water permeation flux. The PVDF membrane exhibited antibacterial properties and displayed better anti-fouling performance. CONCLUSION The superior performance of the Ag/SiO 2 -PVDF membranes and this facile, effective and scalable modification method hold great promise for their practical application. This work would also be helpful for developing new antifouling and antibacterial membrane and related materials via a convenient and large-scale method. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

In this research, AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures have been synthesized at room temperature through a facile in situ method. The as-synthesized unique microstructures were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. And their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV, visible and sunlight irradiation. Comparing with the commercially available P25-TiO 2 and AgCl/Ag core-shell microstructures, our as-prepared samples gave the highest reactivity (almost 100% decomposition in 20 min) under direct sunlight irradiation. Their excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the unique three-layered AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures, leading to improved electron-hole (e − -h + ) separation efficiency and promoting the inside charge carriers promptly transferred to the surfaces. In addition, their photocatalytic activity did not show any loss after four-time recycles, revealing high stability. In brief, the as-synthesized three-layered AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures exhibit their promising potential as efficient sunlight-driven photocatalysts for organic pollutants degradation.

For titanium alloy implants, both surface bioactivity and antibacterial infection are the two critical factors in determining the success of clinical implantation of these metallic implants. In the present work, a novel nanocomposite layer of nano-silver-containing hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA) was prepared on the surface of biomedical Ti6Al4V by laser processing. Analysis using SEM, EDS and XRD shows the formation of an Ag-HA layer of about 200 μm fusion bonded to the substrate. Mineralization tests in simulated body fluid (SBF) showed that laser fabricated Ag-HA nanocomposite layer favors the deposition of apatite on the surface of the implants. Antibacterial tests confirmed that all Ag-HA nanocomposite layers can kill bacteria while a higher Ag content would lower the cytocompatibility of these coatings. Cell viability decreases when the Ag content reaches 5% in these coatings, due to the larger amount of Ag leached out, as confirmed by ion release evaluation. Our results reveal that laser fabricated Ag-HA nanocomposite coatings containing 2% Ag show both excellent cytocompatibility and antibacterial capability.

A new MXene/Ag composite was synthesized by direct reduction of a AgNO3 aqueous solution in the presence of MXene (Ti3C2(OH)0.8F1.2). The as-received MXene/Ag composite can be deemed as an excellent anode material for lithium-ion batteries, exhibiting an extraordinary long cycle lifetime with a large capacity at high charge–discharge rates. The results show that Ag self-reduction in MXene solution is related to the existence of low-valence Ti. Reversible capacities of 310 mAh·g–1 at 1 C (theoretical value being ∼320 mAh·g–1), 260 mAh·g–1 at 10 C, and 150 mAh·g–1 at 50 C were achieved. Remarkably, the composite withstands more than 5000 cycles without capacity decay at 1–50 C. The main reasons for the long cycle life with high capacity are relevant to the reduced interface resistance and the occurrence of Ti(II) to Ti(III) during the cycle process.

The increasing pollution of aquatic environments by antibiotics makes it necessary to develop efficient enrichment and sensitive detection methods for environmental antibiotics monitoring. In this work, silver nanoparticles and carbon nanotube-intercalated graphene oxide laminar membranes (Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes) were successfully prepared for enrichment and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of antibiotics. The prepared Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes exhibited a high enrichment ability because of the π–π stacking and electrostatic interactions of GO toward antibiotic molecules, which enhanced the sensitivity of SERS measurements and enabled the antibiotics to be determined at sub-nM concentrations. In addition, the nanochannels created by the intercalation of CNTs into GO layers resulted in an 8-fold enhancement in the water permeance of Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes compared to that of pure GO membranes. More importantly, the Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes exhibited high reproducibility and long-term stability. The spot-to-spot variation in SERS intensity was less than 15%, and the SERS performance was maintained for at least 70 days. The Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes were also used for SERS detection of antibiotics in real samples; the results showed that the characteristic peaks of antibiotics were obviously recognizable. Thus, the sensitive SERS detection of antibiotics based on Ag NPs/CNT-GO offers great potential for practical applications in environmental analysis.

A novel nitrogen-doped biomass carbon/silver (C-N/Ag) composite has been synthesized by a simple method, wherein the precursor of soymilk simultaneously serves as carbon and nitrogen sources, reductant and substrate. The structure, morphology and valence state of samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Results show the formation of nano-sized Ag homogenously disperses on the surface of mesoporous substrate, and the self-reduction role mainly attributes to the presence of unsaturated carbon bonding. Electrochemical properties were characterized by galvanostatic discharge and impedance spectra techniques. The sample prepared with 1 mmol AgNO 3 solution, activated by 0.1 M KOH and annealed at 900 °C shows excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity and good electrochemical durability in alkaline medium. The onset potential, limiting diffusion current density and electron transfer number are 0.93 V, 6.26 mA cm −2 and 4.00, respectively, superior to those of 60 wt.% Ag/C and comparable to 20 wt.% Pt/C catalysts correspondingly. The discharge performance of Zn-air batteries is better than that of 20 wt% Pt/C.

We reported a simple and fast method to prepare a composite material of polydopamine (PDA) adlayer covered cubic AgCl core, which was inlaid with Ag nanoparticles (NPs), shortly named as AgCl/PDA/AgNPs. The resultant AgCl/PDA/AgNPs could be employed as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for in-situ detection and the SERS activity could be further greatly improved due to the production of more AgNPs upon laser irradiation. With 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) as the probe molecule, the enhancement factor could reach 10 7 . Additionally, such SERS substrate shows good reproducibility with relative standard deviation of 7.32% and long term stability (after storage for 100 days under ambient condition, SERS intensity decay is less than 25%). In-situ elevating SERS activity of AgCl/PDA/AgNPs induced by laser may be beneficial to sensitive analysis in practical fields.

High-energy-density flexible composite films, using one dimension BaTiO 3 @Ag nanofibers (BT@Ag NFs) as fillers and PVDF as polymeric matric, have been prepared by solution casting and the following hot compressing molding. The BT@Ag NFs have been prepared by electrospinning and then chemical deposition method. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss, breakdown strength and energy density were studied systematically. The maximum dielectric constant is 42.8 at 1 kHz in the nanocomposites loading with 15 vol% BT@Ag NFs, which is about 515% larger than that of the pristine PVDF (8.3 at 1 kHz). The energy density of the 2.5 vol% BT@Ag NFs/PVDF nanocomposites is 7.75 J cm − 3 at 3500 kV m − 1 , which is about 645% over the biaxially oriented polypropylenes (1.2 J cm − 3 at 6400 kV m − 1 ). The enhanced energy density may be ascribed to the Coulomb block effect. Such improvements are of potential importance for preparation of high-energy-density nanocomposites.

In the present paper, we report on the design and fabrication of a recyclable microfluidic SERS chip with an integrated Au@Ag/TiO2 NTs (gold core silver shell nanoparticles (NPs) with decorated TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs)) composite SERS substrate. The stripped TiO2 NTs with regularly arranged pore structures were prepared on a Ti foil by easy tape lithography followed by anodic oxidation. The Au@Ag NPs were fabricated on the mouth surface and the inner walls of the TiO2 NTs within a microchannel without clogging via a facile self-assembly chemical plating composite method. Under optimized conditions, the microfluidic SERS chip provided excellent sensitivity to R6G molecules with a detection limit of 10−10 M and a SERS enhancement factor (EF) of 1.15 × 108. Versus single Au NPs, Au@Ag NPs and the Au@Ag/TiO2 plate, the optimized Au@Ag/TiO2 NTs showed improved SERS peak intensities for the C–C–C bending (613 cm−1) of 20, 2.3 and 1.6 times enhancement, respectively. The enhancement effect was attributed to both electromagnetic and chemical enhancement. The photocatalytic performance of the Au@Ag/TiO2 NTs was exploited to recycle the microfluidic SERS chip through UV light photocatalytic purification. The experimental result shows that the microfluidic SERS chip featured high reproducibility and could be used as an efficient SERS detector for many biochemical molecules.

To mitigate biofouling and maintain the properties of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrodialysis (ED) processes, conferring specialized functional coatings onto surfaces has proven effective in reducing susceptibility to biofouling. In this research, AEM substrates were synthesized using the conventional chemical assembly method, involving the reaction of 1-butylimidazole (BIm) with commercially available bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO). Subsequently, a synergistic anti-biofouling system comprising graphene oxide (GO) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) co-mingled casting-solution was formulated into a 2-μm coating through spraying onto the AEM surface. Exceptional static antibacterial activity of this system towards prevalent Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria due to contact killing mechanisms. The dynamic anti-biofilm capability of post-electrodialysis AEM was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing consistent efficacy. Notably, the enhancement of anti-biofouling properties was achieved without compromising separation efficiency, as the coating solution shares the same composition as the substrate membrane. Crucially, the co-sprayed coating technique on the AEM surface overcomes the conventional “trade-off phenomenon” between performance and stability. This approach to fabricating anti-biofouling AEMs is believed to provide valuable insights for further optimization and application, thereby facilitating their deployment in water treatment and related fields.

There are inevitable cracking defects in pressureless bonded joints with single nanoparticle system silver (Ag) pastes, which could potentially compromise the long-term service reliability of the bonded joints. To address this issue, a novel hybrid Ag paste suitable for pressureless sintering was developed by introducing micron Ag flakes into the modified Ag nanoparticles. The effects of process parameters, such as the mass ratio of Ag nanoparticles to micron-sized Ag flakes in the paste and the sintering time, on the electrical performance of the sintered films and the bonding performance of the joints were investigated. The mechanism of sintering reliability enhancement of micro-nano hybrid Ag paste was also investigated. After a long time of high-temperature aging, micro-nano hybrid Ag paste joints with optimized micro/nano ratio exhibit reduced surface defects (with porosity of 22.19 % for hybrid Ag paste joints while 28.67 % for nano-Ag paste joints), which contributes to the enhanced mechanical stability compared to nano-Ag paste bonded joints (with shear strength of 45.78 MPa for hybrid Ag paste joints while 33.38 MPa for nano-Ag paste joints). The obtained hybrid Ag paste with high mechanical service reliability and superior repeatability would find a broad application prospect in the field of power device packaging.

Green hydrogen is a crucial element in the hydrogen value chain, encompassing hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and application. The production of green hydrogen via NaBH 4 hydrolysis (SBH) entails a high cost. However, the fast kinetics of this process with a catalyst compensate for the substantial cost, especially in specific applications, such as local or intermittent use. Silver is known for its excellent catalytic properties. Its high catalytic activity is a key factor in achieving efficient hydrogen generation from (SBH). In this study, a nanocomposite catalyst composed of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), CoFe 2 O 4 , and carbon nanotubes (CNT) was investigated to demonstrate an effective catalyst design approach to achieve enhanced hydrogen generation performance. The H 2 production rate in the presence of Ag-based/CoFe 2 O 4 –CNT was 320 mL min −1 g −1 , and the apparent activation energy was 14.7 kJ mol −1 , superior to that of Ag-based catalysts reported in the literature. Analyses of the observed outcomes revealed that the CNT was decorated with well-dispersed AgNPs and CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles. The synergistic effects of AgNPs, CoFe 2 O 4 , and CNT were demonstrated by analyzing the kinetic behaviour of each component based on systematic comparisons. Furthermore, the paramagnetic property of CoFe 2 O 4 enables harvesting of the catalyst using an external magnetic field, and it was verified that the reactivity of the collected catalyst was maintained throughout seven successive cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance of Ag/CoFe 2 O 4 – CNT should be attributed to the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles on the CNT surface. Furthermore, our key approach for developing efficient Ag-based carbon advanced catalysts for SBH in the future is to ensure their suitability for industrial applications.
