Development of Eco-Friendly Chitosan Films Enhanced with Bioactive Citric Acid-Based Deep Eutectic Agents for Sustainable Food Packaging and Fish Preservation

Ping Shi,Xin Wang,Sajid Ali,Li-Yan Zeng,Xin-hui Xian,Jin-ling Huang,Sheng-yun Qin,Yuan-Sen Liu,Hafiz Umer Javed

This study explores the development of chitosan (CS) films enhanced with citric acid-based deep eutectic agents (CA-DEA) to address the dual challenges of sustainable food packaging and effective fish preservation. CA-DEA was synthesized using citric acid (CA) and choline chloride (ChCl) in molar ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1, with the synthesis confirmed through FTIR analysis. Among these, the 4:1 molar ratio, identified as the most effective formulation for its superior antibacterial properties against E. coli (17.3 ± 0.78 mm) and S. aureus (23.625 ± 0.09 mm), was further evaluated at varying concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%) to examine its effects on the structure and functional properties of CS films. Mechanical testing revealed that films with 0.5% CA-DEA achieved the highest tensile strength (TS; 47.98 ± 2.40 MPa), while higher concentrations led to decreased TS (13.59 ± 1.37 MPa), likely due to over-plasticization. The incorporation of CA-DEA enhanced the films' antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV-barrier properties, significantly improving their bioactivity. As a bioactive coating on tilapia fillets, the incorporation of CA-DEA formulation effectively reduced water loss, preserved protein, controlled TVB-N levels, and extended shelf life, showing the most effective preservation results. This study highlights CA-DEA’s multifunctionality as a bioactive plasticizer, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional packaging and advancing eco-friendly preservation technologies for perishable aquatic products.

Enhancement of oil-resistance and antibacterial property of cellulose paper by coated with natural compound for eco-friendly cake packaging

Fang Wang,Wenwen Liu,Yumeng Jin,Wenyu Zou,Shouyan Zhu,Hangyu Shen,Xiaoying Wang,Ziqiang Xu,Fangong Kong

The amphipathic property of paper inhibits its applications in cake packaging. Herein, sodium alginate, calcium chloride, and cinnamaldehyde were mixed, and the process was precisely controlled to maintain homogenously aqueous coating solution. Sodium alginate and Ca 2+ chelation is helpful to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which improves oil resistance of the coated papers. Kit number of the coated papers were 12 at 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 °C, and soybean oil resistance time was over 24 h. The coated papers exhibited good biocompatibility, and the bacterial inhibition zones reached 28 ( Escherichia coli ) and 34 mm ( Staphylococcus aureus ). Additionally, the mechanical property, air permeability, ultraviolet and high-energy blue light blocking, and antioxidative property were all improved. Cake preservation results showed that the coated paper inhibited oil penetration and bacterial proliferation. This biomass-based coated papers can be an alternative for grease food packaging.

Integrative flavoromics-GC-MS/IMS approach to study the formation mechanism of fishy flavor in skipjack tuna oil induced by oxidation and heat

Xianling Lan,Xiaoqin Pan,Jiawei Luo,Shan Xiao,Yanxue Cai,Jihui Wang

Skipjack tuna oil that is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, is prone to developing fishy odors under high-temperature or oxidative conditions. This study investigated the effects of four treatments—low-temperature thermal, low-concentration oxidation, high-concentration oxidation, and high-temperature thermal—on oxidation degree, volatile compounds, fatty acids, and sensory characteristics. GC–MS identified five key volatile compounds: hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester; octadecanoic acid, ethyl ester; ethyl oleate; ethyl 9-hexadecenoate; and ethyl 6,9,12,15-octadecatetraenoate. Oxidation induction significantly increased peroxide value and acid value, primarily by generating aldehydes (e.g., hexanal, heptanal), which intensified fishy odors. In contrast, by GC-IMS analysis, higher concentrations of fishy odor markers, 1-octen-3-ol (0.48 ± 0.05 %), 2-ethylfuran-D (0.75 ± 0.01 %), and (E)-2-heptenal-D (0.08 ± 0 %) were found in the high temperature thermal group, showing a more pronounced impact of thermal induction on flavor dynamics than oxidative pathways. These findings elucidate the dual roles of oxidation and thermal degradation in fishy odor formation.

Preparation of K-carrageenan /polylactic acid nanofiber membranes encapsulating Vitamin C/ Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes by electrostatic spinning for blueberry preservation

Lingling Bai,Yurui Wu,Huijin Xu,Jiyuan Yang,Yiting Lu,Wenge Yang,Yonghong Hu

In this study, K-carrageenan (KC)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite nanofiber membranes loaded with vitamin C (VC)/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) inclusion complexes were prepared by electrostatic spinning for blueberry preservation. A scanning electron microscope, electronic universal testing machine, and other instruments were used to analyze the apparent and mechanical properties of the membrane as well as the physicochemical indexes of blueberries during the preservation process. The loading of the inclusion raised the average diameter of the nanofibers membrane, reduced the crystallinity, and hydrophobicity, and improved the thermal stability of the fibers membrane. The release curves showed that encapsulating the inclusion complex in KC/PLA significantly prolonged the release time of VC. The membranes exhibited better antimicrobial properties as well as higher antioxidant properties in vitro and in vivo . These results indicate that the developed antimicrobial membrane has good application prospects in food packaging.

Effect of different phospholipids on the co-encapsulation of curcumin and oligomeric proanthocyanidins in nanoliposomes: Characteristics, physical stability, and in vitro release

Chaoting Wen,Liyan Cao,Xin Xu,Li Liang,Xiaofang Liu,Jixian Zhang,Youdong Li,Guoyan Liu

In the present study, the differences among NLs prepared with soybean phospholipids (SPL), soybean phosphatidylcholine (PC), and sunflower seed phospholipids (SSPL) were investigated. The structural characteristics, physical stability, in vitro release, and bio-accessibility of NLs co-encapsulating curcumin (Cur) and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) were evaluated. Compared with PC and SSPL, SPL co-encapsulated Cur and OPC NLs (SPL-co-loaded-NLs) had a smaller particle size (147 nm), a more uniform shape (spherical bilayer structure), and better size homogeneity. In addition, SPL-co-loaded-NLs also possessed the highest stability, antioxidant capacity (DPPH· scavenging rate: 38.79 %, FRAP value: 0.17 mmol Fe 2+ /mL), and bio-accessibility (Cur: 93 %, OPC: 96 %). Furthermore, FT-IR and XRD confirmed that the higher stability of SPL-co-loaded-NLs compared with other NLs was due to their tighter lipid structure, tighter lipid aggregation, and stronger hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions between active substances and phospholipids. This study was expected to provide a theoretical reference for developing functional foods with co-encapsulated active substances of different polarities.

Ultrahigh biologically adhesive ZnTiCe- layered double hydroxide@polydopamine for multispectral military protection

Chenyu Liu,Lulu Meng,Xinmeng Wang,Bingyin Chen,Weihong Qiao

Modern protective materials demand multifunctional integration to address extreme environmental challenges, particularly in desert and high-altitude terrains requiring concurrent defense against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, visible-light detection, and infrared (IR) surveillance. However, conventional UV- protective systems often fail to integrate IR stealth and visual camouflage capabilities, significantly limiting their military utility. Herein, we develop a bioadhesive ZnTiCe-layered double hydroxide@polydopamine (ZnTiCe-LDH@PDA) composite via urea hydrothermal synthesis and interfacial modification. XRD and XPS analyses confirm that strategic Ce doping induces lattice distortion in the ZnTi-LDH matrix, effectively narrowing the optical bandgap from 3.86 eV to 3.69–3.74 eV and enhancing UV shielding performance (11.7 % transmittance at 350 nm vs. 32.4 % for pristine LDH). The meticulously designed multilayer architecture, combined with functional anion groups in LDH, achieves IR concealment through synergistic absorption and multiwavelength reflection-attenuation mechanisms (8.77 ± 0.25 °C thermal gradient reduction in murine models). The surface-engineered PDA coating enables range from white to black for visual camouflage, while demonstrating robust dermal adhesion and potent antioxidant activity (45.27 ± 0.51 % DPPH radical scavenging). Biosafety evaluations reveal negligible cytotoxicity, minimal hemolysis, and non-irritation, underscoring its practical potential. This work establishes a “molecular doping–structural optimization–interface engineering” triadic synergy mechanism, providing a groundbreaking paradigm for next-generation adaptive multispectral protective materials.

Effect of Glow Discharge Cold Plasma Treatment on the Physicochemical Properties and Antioxidant Capacity of Maize

Miao Li,Chengcheng Ren,Caihong Li,Zengxuan Fan,Jiayin Zhu,Chenling Qu

This study evaluated the effect of cold plasma (CP) on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacity of maize. CP treatments were performed using a glow discharge, applying argon and/or nitrogen at 50 W, with different working pressures (75, 100, and 125 Pa) and exposure times (1, 5, and 10 min). The maize samples were analyzed before and after treatments for color, fatty acid value (FAV), malondialdehyde content, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, total phenol content (TPC), ascorbic acid content, reduced glutathione content, and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was further evaluated during storage (25 °C for 180 days). After treatments, color parameters (brightness, yellowness, and saturation) showed measurable enhancement, while FAV and malondialdehyde content were significantly reduced by 14.95–56.37% and 11.38–43.71%, respectively. The optimal treatment conditions (100 Pa working pressure and 5 min exposure) maximized antioxidant enzyme activities and bioactive compound levels, accompanied by substantial increases in TPC. Under these conditions, maize samples had the highest organic radical scavenging capacities (DPPH), reaching 1.31-fold (argon plasma) and 1.25-fold (nitrogen plasma) that of untreated sample. During storage, all samples subjected to the optimal combined treatment exhibited higher DPPH radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant potential, along with lower FAVs and malondialdehyde contents compared to the untreated sample. Additionally, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity exhibited statistically inverse correlations with both FAV (r2= −0.49) and malondialdehyde content (r2= −0.15), as quantified through Pearson correlation analysis. These findings indicated that glow discharge cold plasma is a potentially effective non-thermal processing technique to enhance bioactive compound accumulation and antioxidant enzyme activity for preserving maize’s physicochemical properties, with possible use in the food industry for sustainable grain preservation strategies, particularly in delaying oxidative deterioration.

pH and Glucose Dual-Responsive Hydrogels Promoted Diabetic Wound Healing by Remodeling the Wound Microenvironment

Yifan Zhou,Fanjia Dai,Sifang Zhao,Zelong Li,Hongze Liang,Xiao Wang,Lingling Zhao,Hui Tan

The microenvironment of diabetic wounds is complicated and characterized by hyperglycemia, hyperinflammation, persistent infection, hypoxia, and ischemia, making wound restoration and healing extremely challenging. Therefore, functional hydrogel dressings with the ability to regulate the microenvironment of diabetic wounds are a promising strategy for the treatment of diabetic wounds. In this study, a pH/glucose dual-responsive hydrogel based on phenylboric acid-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCSPBA), aldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEGCHO), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been developed for diabetic wound treatment via Schiff base and phenylboric ester interactions. Glucose oxidase (GOX), catalase (CAT), and deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) are incorporated into the hydrogel to endow it with multi-functionality. In the hyperglycemic environment of diabetic wounds, a benign feedback loop is formed through the synergistic action of each component of the hydrogel, which enables the reshaping of the microenvironment of diabetic wounds by adjusting the pH and glucose, alleviating oxidative stress and hypoxia, regulating the inflammatory response, inhibiting bacterial infection, and promoting angiogenesis, thus accelerating diabetic wound healing in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice.

Natural deep eutectic solvent-ultrasonic-enzyme combination assisted extraction: Establishment of an integrated method and application on Astragalus polysaccharides

Lulu Ye,Haofang Wan,Yihang Lu,Jiehong Yang,Yu He,Haitong Wan,Chang Li

Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) is among the main active components in Astragalus membranaceus (AM), which is an important industrial crop widely used both as medicine and food in East Asia. To improve the extraction yield and quality of APS, a novel, concise and efficient extraction method, namely NaDES-Ultrasound-Enzyme combination assisted extraction (NUECAE), was established for APS in present study. The extraction parameters were optimized, and purified homogeneous polysaccharides were obtained with column chromatography. The structure features and bioactivities of APS obtained both with traditional methods (tAPS) and novel methods (nAPS) were evaluated in comparison. The results revealed that under the optimal extraction parameters: ChCl-Lac content 10 %, solid-liquid ratio 1:30 (g/mL), cellulase (1 U/mg), extraction time 30 min, and extraction temperature 75 °C, the extraction yield of APS was 14.3 %, which was almost twice as high as that of traditional heated water extraction (HWE, 7.6 %). Three homogeneous polysaccharides were isolated from nAPS and tAPS, respectively. The average molecular weight of nAPS were relatively smaller, while monosaccharide analysis showed that the monosaccharide type of both APS are almost the same, but the relative contents were altered. In addition, nAPS exhibited slightly stronger antioxidant activity in vitro . In comparison with reported methods, NUECAE is an innovative, efficient, and environmentally-friendly method for the extraction of polysaccharides from herbal resources. Specifically, the integrated method requires lower time, temperature, and energy consumption, while it can exhibit sharply higher yield and provide higher quality polysaccharide extracts.

Background: Food spoilage, particularly in meat products, presents a significant economic and health concern, necessitating the development of reliable and user-friendly monitoring methods. Aim: This study presents the development and evaluation of novel colorimetric films for real-time monitoring of meat freshness. Methods: Films were formulated using anthocyanin (AHO) and betacyanin (BTA) from purple cabbage and red dragon fruit, respectively, embedded within polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose matrix. Two pigment ratios, AHO:BTA (1:3) and (3:1), were compared to evaluate mechanical properties, antioxidant activity, and ammonia sensitivity. Results: The AHO:BTA (1:3) film demonstrated higher tensile strength, whereas the (3:1) film exhibited greater antioxidant capacity and ammonia responsiveness. Colorimetric changes were assessed across the pH range, showing sensitivity to pH shifts. The films were then applied to beef, lamb, fish, and pork samples, and their color alterations during storage under ambient and refrigerated conditions were correlated with total volatile basic nitrogen and pH levels. Conclusion: The results show a strong correlation between film color changes and established meat spoilage indicators, demonstrating the potential of these natural pigment-based films for effective, nontoxic, and visual monitoring of meat freshness.

Hyaluronic acid composite hydrogel with enhanced lubrication and controllable drug release for the mitigation of osteoarthritis

Qianru Guo,Rui Nan,Yuxiao Du,Rui Wang,Meiming Xie,Xilin Li,Kezhou Li,Tao Xiang,Shaobing Zhou

Excessive inflammation, overexpressed reactive oxygen species (ROS), degradation of the extracellular matrix, and high friction aggravate osteoarthritis (OA). Intra-articular injection for local drug delivery in the joint cavity enhances drug retention duration for OA treatment. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge to attenuate OA by thoroughly modulating the joint microenvironment, achieving controlled drug release, and enhancing lubrication. This study develops hyaluronic acid (HA) composite hydrogels, infused with gelatin microspheres containing a drug, utilizing dynamic interactions between phenylboronic acid and catechol to modulate the microenvironment by scavenging ROS, facilitating controlled drug release, and improving lubrication to mitigate OA. The composite hydrogels can be injected by intra-articular injection due to the shear-thinning properties, demonstrating broad ROS scavenging capacity and matrix metalloproteinase-9 responsive drug release. Both the in vitro and in vivo experiments prove the protective efficacy of the composite hydrogels against the degradation of cartilage matrix. Additionally, the hydrogels can offer efficient lubrication and effectively attenuate OA. Thus, the injectable HA composite hydrogels demonstrated potential in the management of OA.

Zwitterionic-based cyclic brush polymer nanomicelles with improved lubrication and antioxidation properties

Huizhu Wang,Miao Zhang,Ying Chen,Shaopei Ding,Meng Qin,Tong Wu,Jianshu Li,Jing Xie

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative bone and joint disease characterized by cartilage degradation and an inflammatory environment. Consequently, strategies aimed at remodeling the damaged joint microenvironment by concurrently enhancing lubrication and alleviating inflammation are essential for improving therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we designed a multifunctional cyclic brush polymer nanomicelles (CP) composed of surface-grafted zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) brushes and a hydrophobic core of PHEMA. Benefiting from the unique cyclic brush topology and hydrated lubrication properties of PSBMA, CP exhibited effective lubrication. Tribological and wear tests showcased CP significantly reduced the coefficient of friction and surface wear under shear forces. Furthermore, CP served as a nanocarrier for encapsulating the anti-inflammatory drug resveratrol (RSV) through hydrophobic interactions, serve as drug- loaded nanomicelles CP@RSV. In vitro studies indicated that CP@RSV exhibited excellent cytocompatibility, effectively eliminated reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells and reversed mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby modulating the oxidative stress microenvironment. In conclusion, CP@RSV integrates enhanced lubrication with antioxidation properties, representing a promising strategy for the treatment of OA.
